  1. I have a '99 RSTD with a 2 year old new factory rear shock. No matter how hard I try, I can't get it adjusted so it won't bottom out when I'm riding 2 up. This is the shock that sits horizontally so if the bike settles down or I'm riding and I go over a bump the piston comes out as opposed to a vertically mounted shock where the piston would go in. There are no markings on it to tell me which way to turn to adjust the preload or how much to turn it. Any suggestions? Thanks
  2. I have an 06 RSV that is still under warranty for a few months...The rear shock appears to be leaking now. Is this something that is covered under the warranty?
  3. Hi guys.. I just got back from a road trip (ahhh..) and ran into an issue with the new Works rear shock on the bike.. When I installed the bike this winter, in a heated garage, I set the preload (sag) as per directions (I don't have the instructions with me to quote what it is).. but I measured and adjusted and measured and adjusted with full gear on etc.. Later this cold spring I took the bike out for runs and jaunts and wow, nice stiff suspension... seems the preload was excellent and the rebound adjust set just right.. And rode that way for a little while before the long road trip.. And then it happened.. Traveling from up here in 40-50'F weather, the bike started to ride squirrely when we got into the warmer temps down in the USA, in the 70-80's the bike was now acting like it had a dead Yamaha shock (I should know, I had two dead ones hence why replaced the last warranty shock with a Works). I had hit a divot on the I95 that literally threw my assets out of the seat to such a height my buddy who was following me said he could see the seat of my trousers as I came up out of the seat.. This might have oomph'd the hell out of the system. With my buddy's 08 RSV next to mine to compare, I could push down on the right side passenger hold bar and the bike would rock down a lot compared to his.. At home, my bike's suspension was stiffer than his and wouldn't rock.. When I sat on the bike, he noticed the sag was more than a few inches.. I also noticed that perhaps the rear of the bike was much lower as I could sit with both feet flat on the ground where before I was heel up on one foot.. ergh.. At no time, while the bike was sitting in the garage or in parking lots did I notice any amount of oil on the floor nor any drips from the bottom of the shock.. When I sit on the bike and press down with my weight, I hear a sound from the rear suspension.. my buddy says it sounds like a groan, I hear it more as fluid rushing under compression through a valve or chamber, almost like a swish sound. Needless to say, barreling down the I95 with a dodgy rear shock wasn't any fun at all.. ouch. I made contact with the people who makes the shock and they suggested I should adjust the rebound at the bottom of the shock.. and this helped a lot! Almost as new.. but I had no means or tools to re-adjust the pre-load at the top collar. As we headed back north into NJ and NH, the shock felt fine.. but when we got to Nova Scotia.. wow, there it was, the same shock I remembered having before, except it being a little droopy in the rear.. (somewhat like me I guess).. When I adjusted the rebound with an allen key, I did not feel any 'clicks'.. just free turning but it did do something.. I was under the impression it should "click" into various positions as you rotate it. Do you have a Work shock? Do you notice a difference in the shock from cold to hot? For us, we get this temp difference with one or two days or riding south, so it was rapidly noticeable.. really not fun.. I can't believe that 20-30'F ambient air temp could affect the spring or system that much.. The shock is covered under warranty so I'm not concerned about that.. But is it possible I actually didn't set it up properly in the first place and that one large bump in the heat proved it? Just curious if anyone else with the same shock can shed some light on (A) does the rebound adjuster 'click' or just turns... (B) do you notice changes in your shock from cold to hot etc? and © do you hear a fluid swish noise when you put your weight on the seat? thanks in advance..
  4. Picked up a new OEM rear shock for 400.00 and installed the leveling links someone very graciously gave to me today. I will never make the same mistakes again. Did you know if you don't put a jack in FRONT of the leveling links linkage you can't get that shock out for nothing? Nope, ain't gonna happen. Tried for 3 hours and my mind was becoming mush then I put jack where it needed to be and the shock just dropped out. Called it quits after getting shock in for the day putting everything back together but man that was a PITA. Going on Iron Butt ride this Sunday from Iowa to Hattiesburg Miss, then to New Orleans for a day. Then off to Panama City FL. From there were not sure if were going to North Carolina or Tenn. From there I want to try and make it to the Kentucky gathering on the 27th or 28th. Should be around a 3500-4000 mile ride all and all. Gonna have to get a little time in with the new shock and leveling links to get reacquainted to what a bike should feel like.
  5. Does anyone have a rear shock off of a 2nd Gen. they would like to send me? I do some work for Gabriel North America Ride Control. They make many shocks for cars, trucks, quads, snowmobiles, you name it. I deal with the head Engineer. I would like to take a shock into him for some research on our problem we have. My shock is still good or I would take it. They have so many different designs that I am thinking they may have one close to the kind we need and maybe able to change the mounting hardware so that we could use it. I would let him know of all the problems that we have with the original and see what he comes up with. I am sure this shock would be cut away for them to see the internal workings. It would be of no use to anyone anymore. Just a thought. Any takers?
  6. Is the shock on a 99 Venture the same as a shock on a 2005 RSTD?
  7. Hey all, its been awhile since I last posted, probably since the last Meet and Eat in Rome with Eck and Blackjack. Lifes beens nuts here, but anyways, I am pretty sure I have blown my rear shock. I have noticed oil under it and it seems my ride has deteriated to the point that I bottom out on most any bump and sometimes the bike feels a little squirrley in a curve, kinda like a cocker spaniel wagging its tail! lol anyways, I found an OEM for about 550 but I really wanna make sure that I ain't replacing it for nuthin! I have heard that I should not bottom out the shock and I know we've been packing a few more pounds, but it does bottom out a lot,and it seems to float a bit? I plan on a rear tire as well if I can find a venom on sale, hoping to hit the Keys in a few weeks so I have my hands full! Hope all is well with all and we'll meet up again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  8. My husband was installing a replacement 'shock linkage"? (to raise the rear a little) today. When he removed the bottom bolt and the back tire was lowered (its on a stand), some fluid drained out of the shock absorber. He said it was half a shot glass full. Does that mean we have to replace this $ 400 shock??..RSV 02 midnight - than:shock3:x...JanJan
  9. Just brought home a new to me 2005 rtsd with 21000 miles on it.My warranty has expired and it seems the rear shock has shot craps. My question is there another shock besides the stock yamaha shock to replace the worn out one with.Thanks.
  10. I can't take it anymore. My 2001 RSV needs a new rear shock badly. I see a Works shock on ebay for $689. Is there any place cheaper? I am really not interested in an OEM replacement due to their very short lives, but if one could be had for half of a Works shock, I would be tempted. Any other alternative air shocks?
  11. reference: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?threadid=57395 The "new to me" GL1800 is a 2007. The black is the metallc, this thing really sparkles in direct sunlight. The short time that I have spent riding so far has been very revealing. I suppose many of you already know some of this, but here goes. Comparing to my 2007 Venture. Even though it's heavier it feels and handles lighter, lower center of gravity. Smooth strong power all the way through the revs, I like to describe it as almost like a powerful electric motor feeling. Of course electronic fuel injection instead of hand choke and four carburetors. Seat is a little lower, and being inseam challenged, it's much more reassuring when stopped. Lots of other little goodies, like electronically controlled two memory preloads for the rear shock (solo/passenger). Speaking of the rear shock, I don't think you have to be in constant fear of a catastrophic rear shock failure at any moment. I loved both my Ventures, rode a '84 until 2004, had my '07 for over a year, but struggling with it being top heavy and wanting to not put my passenger in jeopardy of crashing to the ground when stopped, I was considering some kind of trike kit. Wth the Wing, I may feel enough in control to actually enjoy riding more than I have recently. This thing has crash bars that supposedly holds it up at about a 45 degree angle if it tips over, keeps it off of anyone on it as well as not crashing into the saddle bags, etc. There's a lot more that could be discussed about all the little gadgets, doo-dads, bells&whistles, etc. but that's just "stuff". The main thing for me is feeling more comfortable, at ease, and hopefully I'll get at least a couple more years of fun, enjoyable riding. (I'll be 74 years young next month). Oh, yeh! Just remembered to add this, no chirp, no whine. Everyone feel free to comment.
  12. when my 04 rsv is setting in garage and i set on the seat, rear shock makes a moaning sound when i bounce up and down.is there something that needs to be greased ?
  13. Just wanted to let everyone know that Harley Davidson makes a hand pump for airing up the suspension system on the Venture. It allows removal of the air fitting without loosing the selected air pressure within:cool10: the shock. It also has a flexible hose which helps in connecting the pump to the air valve on the shock. Item: Touring Suspension Air pump Part#: 54630-03A Cost: 49.95 air adjust: 0 through 60lbs.
  14. Just before I take out the rear wheel on my 2000 RSV (18,000 miles) does anyone have any last minute tips for re-greasing etc anywhere important while the back is broken down like this, and is there any way of checking if the rear shock has gone once its off the bike. There dos not appear to be any oil leak etc. Oh and next time I need to take off the reare wheel I'm going to use Dons method of front whell off, drop the nose and then off with the rear (if it works for RSV 2nd gens). Its taken two days on and off to get the rear wheel clear. Thanks for all your tips... oh the reason for this strip is to thry and stop the bad sqweek from the rear shock everytime I take it off the centre stand.
  15. I'm just wondering if anyone here has any experience with this company's rear shock. I was searching around on the Internet and found that this company builds a shock that fits the Royal Star Venture. I wrote there U.S. dealer, Dave Quinn motorcycles in Conn. and promptly received this reply. Happy to help. Hagon makes shocks for 98 and up 1300 Venture Star with VIN prefix XVZ13TF or 4XY. Currently out of stock, can easily get, 2-4 weeks. Cost is $394 plus UPS at cost to you which will vary depending on your zip code. 'Off-the-shelf' shocks are assembled for an average rider- there is enough adjustability in the stock shock to cover a wide range of loading. It would be useful to know your weight, and whether you carry passengers (% of time? Passenger weight?) or luggage (saddlebags? tank bag? top box? loading in each?) and what your maximum loading (passenger/luggage) is likely to be. If Hagons determine that your loading exceeds the design parameters of the shock, they can supply to special order a shock with an uprated spring. Conversely if you are very light, Hagons can for some shocks supply a lighter spring. Softer and harder springs are available as custom built units only for $464 and will take between 4 and 6 weeks to get here. Shocks are also available to special order with a remote hydraulic spring preload adjuster- $554 for a stock spec shock and $624 for an upgraded spring model. Hagon monoshocks are fully rebuildable and feature straight weight spring with adjustable spring preload (threaded manual or hydraulic remote adjuster), adjustable 15 position LINKED compression and rebound damping (one adjuster for both) and a two year unlimited mileage warranty against failure due to manufacturing defect. Bent shocks due to accident, impact, dropped bike, improper installation or owner malfunction will not be warranteed. Shocks are not returnable once they have been fitted. All adjusting tools are included with the shock. You can see representative Hagon monoshocks online at http://www.davequinnmotorcycles.com/cgi-bin/webc.cgi/HAGON_MONOSHOCKS.html Shipping and insurance will be charged at cost and will vary depending on what you order, your zip code and any fuel surcharges in effect on the day your order ships. We ship by UPS in the continental USA, by Priority Mail to AK and HI and by US Mail Express International outside of the USA. For special orders we ask for a 50% good faith deposit when Hagons accept the order, with the balance due when we ship. Please note- Special orders are not returnable unless found to be defective. If you're interested in ordering, we accept VISA & Mastercard; we need: -name as it appears on your credit card -daytime phone number -billing address for the card -ship-to address if different -card number -expiration date. Call or Fax if you are uneasy about emailing credit card details. Let me know if I can offer you any other information. 16. Any suggestions on where to look to buy a Zero to 30 PSI hand pump for the front fork air suspension. Most places seem to be high $ for the Progressive pump. I do the rear shock by starting up my compressor, running it up to 45 PSI and shutting it off. Then I fill the rear shock until the pressure is balanced between the shock and the compressor.
  17. I bought my own xmas gift today. Had to replace that rear shock because it was getting a bit sloppie going into the corners. After doing my research within most of you are staying away from the yamaha product and going with the company "Shock". I called 1-818-701-1010 and talked with Tom. He provided me the VentureRider 10% discount and said it should be about 2-3 weeks at a cost of $ 620.00. Thanks for the info.
  18. Yea!! Got my new Works Shock yesterday, mailed them my Bank Money Order on Dec.3 and received the shock on the 16th. pretty good turn around I think!! Now I just need to pick a week end to install it, looking like next week though, just have to much going on to do it this week end..but can`t wait to see how it rides.
  19. Any one know if Works offers a club discount to Venture Riders Org.? Gonna order a new shock tomorrow and trying to get over sticker shock....
  20. I was looking for another rear shock for the bike and have found that Hagon Shocks make on for our bikes. They had some inventory and numbering issues so I did not end up with one but will order one next time I need to replace mine. They appear to be similar to the Works shock (coilover) and their price is $399. and I believe that is delivered. They were very nice to work with even with the part mix up. Here is his response after receiving my old shock. As I said, I do not have it on my bike so I can not report on it ride quality but these are also rebuildable. "I have measured your shock and confirmed we have an application for your Royal Star Venture.Part # is M62097.The length is 256mm/12mm x30mm top mount/12mmx37mm lower fork fitting. We have ordered one for our stock now." 21. I got to say this is the best change I have made on my bike to date. I always found that the forks on this bike are never right. If you have no air in them they are too mushy and if you even have a little air in them you get a very hard unforgiving ride. Hit a pot hole and you blow your kidneys out you butt and on a on ramp it almost chattered and went sideways if you hit bumps in the lean. After seeing a post by Rick Butler I decided to try something Rick had done. I installed Sonic Springs in a heavier rate (120) and added the Racetech Gold fork emulators. Basically you are eliminating the air assist and adding spring. Also you are making the shock a variable dampening unit instead of an unadapting hard on the bumps shock. Now the bike is surefooted in turns and on rough roads a much more comfortable ride. Now to do the rear shock. I planed to wait but I found the infamous pool of oil under the shock and its not warrantied. Second one in a 16000 mi range. I ordered the Works.
  22. Has anyone found a decent alternative to replace the stock rear shock on the RS Venture? This is the third one to go on me.
  23. Good Afternoon All, How much play should the top rear shock bolt have in it? I decided to inspect the swing-arm assembly before I start to put her back together, and discovered play when I raise the swing-arm up and down. Is there a bushing in there that can be worn out already, or is this normal. I would guess it is probably somewhere between 1/32nd and 1/16th of an inch, and appears to be concentrated on the top rear shock connection. Have any of you experienced this?
  24. I have a 08 venture and I am starting to feel a wobble in the front and more so at lower speeds. I am going to have to replace the tire by the end of the season since it has 15000 miles on it now and starting to look like it. I'm taking it in to the dealer and have them look at it but I like to be prepared for them to look at things. I also would like to know how you know if the rear shock is bad? The rear end is feeling funny and it feels like the rear tire slips and has a few time and it's a E3 with only 8000 miles on it. The queen says she thinks it rides different but can't put her finger on it. Thanks for any info:95:
  25. egads.. I had my rear shock replaced under warranty last summer and after this long run discovered the dang thing has crapped out.. Comparing it to a couple of other RSV, I stand on the right side of the bike and press down on the rear seat, mine will spring down and up smoothly while the other two have a heck of a lot more resistance to the downward push than mine does.. This is how the tech showed me my shock was dead when he suggested a warranty replacement (a quick test he says).. So though my shock holds air pressure, there is no resistance to it.. and I do not recall ever finding a puddle of oil under the bike nor can I notice any oil dirt on the bottom of the shock.. I ride a lot in the rain, so wonder if that washed a lot of it off? The bike handles the bumps well enough but I noticed lately that the bile wallows in bumpy long curving turns at high speeds.. I can anticipate it and not find it scary though someone not expecting this on their bike might well panic. Anyway, now that the bike is officially out of warranty as of last month (shyte timing huh?) I need to figure out what best to do.. I doubt I'll want to order another whimpy $900 Yamaha shock which will most likely go bunky in a year.. what choices do I have? I'm having my front forks serviced later this month and was contemplating on having a set of progressive springs installed. I have them in my VStar and love the stiffness and lack of nose dive when attack sharp corners or abrupt stopping. It has a nice spring rate.. Has anyone tried these on their RSV yet? Anyhoo... lemme know what you think.. Cheers
