  1. Below is a link to a site were I put a copy of the 1983-1985 Service manual. This copy of the manual has the pages in it that are missing from many of the other online 83 service manuals. I rearranged PDF to put supplementary chapters to rear of manual, Layout of manual now makes more sense. 1/25/2010 I also put in the back a copy of the wiring diagrams I did for the 83-85's. About 45 meg in size. User ID and password below. username=venturerider, password=venturerider Click on blue heading at top of window below to download. 2. This is probabply a dumb question but here goes: I just purchased a new battery yesterday and the parts guys say to charge it before I put in service. My question is can I use a 10 amp charger or do I need a 2 amp slower charge?
  3. I had posted on the welcome forum, but it was suggested I move my questions here. I just purchased a 1997 XVZ13AT Royal Star Tour Classic. I was always tinkering and playing with my old ride (97 Honda Shadow VLX), and plan to do so with the new one. My initial problem is that the guy I bought it from had nothing more than a single key for it, no manuals, tool kit, or anything. I don’t even know what grade oil or an oil filter number for the first change. So two initial questions to get me started: 1) I’ve seen at least 2 versions of printed service manuals and 3 versions of electronic service manuals and am looking for recommendations - both good and ones to steer clear of. Also, any good sources – used is fine. 2) The only project that is a priority is changing the pipes. The bike has performance pipes on it that, well, are too loud for me. Maybe I’m getting to old, but I’ve got to change them. I haven’t looked closely at the pipes to tell you the brand, but my initial feeling is to replace them with a complete set of used original pipes. Anyone know of any good sources? I haven’t really seen anything on E-Bay, this forum, or anywhere else I’ve looked. Anyone upgrade and looking to sell their originals? Thanks for any recommendations on either!
  4. I overshot my 16k mile service on my 07 Venture by 4k. So, I took it in Tues. I got it back Wed, $800 poorer. I was disappointed to hear that the carbs were 'barely out of balance'. I had them save the old plugs so I could see them - they looked great! Hardly any wear at all, and the color looked right. I ended up keeping them as a spare, just in case a new one goes bad. I was hoping that the bike would run like a crotch rocket, since I haven't had it tuned in 10k - nope, she runs about the same. I could tell they had the fairing off and my handlebars had to be re-adjusted for me. Oh well, at least they said that she looks great and everything is in 'ship shape'. craigr
  5. Now heres a real bright bulb........ Robber Loses Wallet, Asks Victim To Return It Man Asked Victim To Meet At Service Station POSTED: Wednesday, October 14, 2009 UPDATED: 3:44 pm EDT October 14, 2009 LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Police said a would-be robber was in jail after losing his wallet during the attempted robbery then phoning the victim and asking for it to be returned. Little Rock police said the 23-year-old man was arrested on robbery charges Tuesday. Police said the man tried to rob a man at gunpoint at his home but fled and dropped his wallet then later called and told the man to return the wallet at a service station in North Little Rock. 6. Files Updated on 10/28/2009>> All Audio circuits now on main page, so that all schematics are now just one page. Other minor corrections done to all schematics. Text realigned for easier reading Some Line types changed for easier reading. Gary I have completed the 1st Generation schematics. My goal in doing this is to make them easier to read and reduce the number of pages needed to display the information. I have used color and line types to make the wiring easier to follow. In some cases I could not use the exact color that is being represented due to visibility and printing issues. For example yellow is hard to see on the screen and does not print well. The previous posting for the 1983-1985 models have been replaced by what is included with this post. The 1983 differs significantly from the 1984-1985 models in the areas of Flasher, Hazard, Starting Circuit Cut-Out Relays, the Hazard Switch, Canceling Unit & Diode Pack. The files for the 86-89 models that were previously posted have been revised slightly and are now at Revision B. Major corrections done included coils were numbered incorrectly in Simplified Circuit & the Flasher Relay Assembly has been updated to include flasher information. The 1990 major changes from the 1986-1989 models were the TCI, coil pick-up & fuel pump control. This post supersedes all previous posts I have done in regards to the 1st gen wiring diagrams. All 1st gen's are included in this post. The files will look best when plotted at 11" x 17" size or larger. Office Max and Staples as well as others can do this for you for a minimal charge if you want a printout. I paid $1.00 for an 11" x 17" color print at Staples. 83 Yamaha Venture TK Wiring Diagram Rev C.pdf 1983 Venture XVZ12TK From 1983 Yamaha Venture Owners Manual. 83 Yamaha Venture Royale TDK Wiring Diagram Rev C.pdf 1983 Venture RoyaleXVZ12TDK From 1983-1985 Yamaha Venture Service Manual 83 Yamaha Venture TK Simplified Circuit Diagram Rev C.pdf 1983 Venture XVZ12TK From 1983-1985 Yamaha Venture Service Manual, page 7-1 83 Yamaha Venture Royale TDK Simplified Circuit Diagram Rev C.pdf 1983 Venture Royale XVZ12TDK From 1983-1985 Yamaha Venture Service Manual, page 7-1 83 Yamaha Venture electrical info.pdf This file is a compilation of various sheets from the 1983 Yamaha Venture Service Manual that would be helpful when working with electrical system. 8. I guess another big question I have before I purcahse a RSV is service after the sale at the dealership. I have narrowed it down to two dealers in my area out of three. All took me on a tour of their maintenance shops; two were well organized and clean and one was anything but. How have they treated your bike while in for a service? For example: Is it usually a good experience because the job was done right and returned in decent shape? Or is your Bike covered with oil and handprints? Scratched or dented? Left out in the rain? Used your bike as a demo? (not funny--heard of this happening) Fixed right the first time? Maybe I am too picky because I like to keep it clean and in good running order.
  9. Never fails I got the title in the mail my 04 Silverado is paid in full. I started the truck up last night and the service engine light came on but it runs fine. No time to have it checked and I'm leaving for New York this week. There used to be a paper clip shorting method on the under dash service plug that would spit out the error codes. I think those had the 12 pin diagnostic plugs. Mine has a 16 pin plug under the drivers side dash Is there a way I can put it in test mode to get the stored error code. It is probably something mnor but I need to know before leaving.
  10. Anyone know the factory setting for idle and how to adjust it if needed? Had my 64k service done today and don't believe it was done correctly. I could take it back and say fix it, but if they potentially didn't do it right the 1st time... At a stop light, clutch pulled in, idles around 1100 rpm. Put it in neutral to be curious and it shot up to about 2-2100 rpm. I am pretty sure before I brought it in for service, the idle rpm speed was about the same regardless of in gear w/ clutch lever pulled all the way in or in neutral. Really not sure why it would make a difference. It practically accomplishes the same thing. Going in the highway at 65 mph, was around 2500-3k. Kinda weird that neutral and 65 mph are just about the same rpm. Also while going 65 mph, pull in the clutch lever and you can still hear the engine rev the same rmp for a few seconds instead of an instant drop. It more or less goes at the 2500-3k rpm for a few seconds and then gradually drops. I am used to an instant drop and not a delay. When shifting gears you hear the engine rev between the shifts. It runs pretty close to like it used to when going from 4th-5th. To quote the paperwork "Unit idles irratic and hangs us sometimes. Unit will need a carb. clean in the near future" Well I put in a full can of seafoam this year. Granted it could have loosened up some debris, plugged the jets, etc...but before I brought it in I wasn't complaining. It seemed to handle the same way (until after it was serviced today) since I bought the bike back in June '08 and this is the 2nd service done by this dealer. Just a guess, but I doubt the previous owner did anything for carb cleaning additives. So not sure if a carb cleaning is in order. On the 64k service they did change the plugs, synch the carbs, & adjust idle (amongs other things, they went by the 4k service). Can the comment about unit idles irratic and hangs up sometimes be related to the carbs being synched incorrectly? One of my questions (got a list made up already) to the tech on Tuesday when the shop reopens, is did he notice the irratic idle before or after the carbs were synched. I am pretty sure I know the answer, but I want to hear it from him. It was litterally at the end of the day and shop had about 10 minutes until it closed. The techs were gone except for the service manager. Asked her about the carb cleaning cost. She said and I quote "It has 2 carbs so $160" What!!!!! 2 carbs.....and you are a yamaha service manager. Just a wild guess, but I believe there are 4. I have read stories like this on this board but never happened to me until now. And also, I'll pass on the carb cleaning. The jets might need pulled to make sure there aren't any debris in them, but I ain't gonna pay to have it done for that much and based on my past 2 experiences w/ them, I ain't gonna let them touch the carbs. Too much knowledge on this board and also people that can help out if need be. I also mentioned to her that it's weird that it needs the carbs cleaned since I put in a can of seafoam earlier in the year. She said yeah, that stuff works ok, but sometimes you just have to pull the carbs all apart to get them really clean. Quick poll of '99 owners that have taken their carbs all apart to clean them or felt it was necessary. Thanks
  11. Just hit the 4000 mile mark and really can not afford to go see the stealer for this service so I pulled up the service chart and was surprised to see that they recommend 8000 miles on an oil change. So is there any thing critical on the 4000 mile check or do I hang my key for the year and hope I get back to working a 40 Hr week by next season.
  12. Can anyone recommend a good dealer in the North Atlanta area to do warranty service work? I know of Lawrenceville Honda Yamaha, Cycle Nation of Canton, and Motions (in Marietta). I've visited them all in the past, and they all seemed nice, but I've never done service business with any, and the Lawrenceville store has a number of negative reviews online. We just bought an '06 Venture that has a problem with the radio (no lights or display whatsoever) and I'd like to get it looked at and fixed as a warranty item. The previous owner said his dealer told him the radio isn't covered under warranty, even though the owner's manual explicitly states that it is. I'm looking for a dealer with a good service department that won't give me grief about the warranty.
  13. Is it just me or is there something wrong with this pic. And I don't mean my fingers being inside the service box. I'm just wondering where they grounded everything at.
  14. After careful consideration and waiting for the 2010 venture I have bought a new to me toy. 2007 wing with EFI. It sure dose have a lot of buttons though! On the way home while trying to find the auto wave button I may have accidently launched the space shuttle. I still intend to hang out here cause I still have the 84 and I think it will still make a good service truck. ( That would be a shift cover from a 5 ton truck this spring ). Besides you guys make me laugh, and after looking at my bank balance, I need a good laugh!
  15. I'm looking for a good service manual. I've found clymer and the factory one. What one would be more practical for home use. I'm not going to tear my venture down and rebuild it, just do the basic stuff. I'm also adding some LED lights to it and maybe a louder horn. Maybe a running light kit also..
  16. I received an email from my oldest son today about this. I agree totally with the guy that originated the call for an "Online Memorial Service"! You'll understand when you read further! I urge you to copy it and send it to all you think may care (and maybe some that don't but should). Give a true hero his due! Godspeed Shifty! Godspeed! and thank you and all the "Band of Brothers" from that war. I salute you, sir! __________________________________________________________________________ Memorial Service: you're invited. I want a nationwide memorial service for Darrell "Shifty" Powers. Shifty volunteered for the airborne in WWII and served with Easy Company of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, part of the 101st Airborne Infantry. If you've seen "Band of Brothers" on HBO or the History Channel, you know Shifty. His character appears in all 10 episodes, and Shifty himself is interviewed in several of them. I met Shifty in the Philadelphia airport several years ago. I didn't know who he was at the time. I just saw an elderly gentleman having trouble reading his ticket. I offered to help, assured him that he was at the right gate, and noticed the "Screaming Eagle", the symbol of the 101st Airborne, on his hat. Making conversation, I asked him if he'd been in the 101st Airborne or if his son was serving. He said qu ietly that he had been in the 101st. I thanked him for his service, then asked him when he served, and how many jumps he made. Quietly and humbly, he said, "Well, I guess I signed up in 1941 or so, and was in until sometime in 1945.....", at which point my heart skipped. Then, again very humbly, he said, "I made the 5 training jumps at Toccoa, and then jumped into Normandy . . . . do you know where Normandy is?" At this point my heart stopped. I told him yes, I knew exactly where Normandy was, and I knew what D-Day was. At that point he said, "I also made a second jump into Holland , into Arnhem ." I was standing with a genuine war hero . . . . and then I realized that it was June, just after the anniversary of D-Day. I asked Shifty if he was on his way back from France , and he said, "Yes. And it's real sad because these days so few of the guys are left, and those that are, lots of them can't make the trip." My heart was in my throat and I didn't know what to say. I helped Shifty get onto the plane and then realized he was back in Coach, while I was in First Class. I sent the flight attendant back to get him and said that I wanted to switch seats. When Shifty came forward, I got up out of the seat and told him I wanted him to have it, that I'd take his in Coach. He said "No, son, you enjoy that seat. Just knowing that there are still some who remember what we did and still care is enough to make an old man very happy." His eyes were filling up as he said it. And mine are brimming up now as I write this. Shifty died on June 17 after fighting cancer. There was no parade. No big event in Staples Center . No wall to wall, back to back, 24/7 news coverage. No weeping fans on television. And that's not right. Let's give Shifty his own Memorial Service, online, in our own quiet way. Please forward this email to everyone you know. Especially to the veterans. Rest in peace, Shifty. ----------------------------- "A nation without heroes is nothing." - Roberto Clemente
  17. In early July my 08 RSV developed a problem with the starter electronics. When you turn the key on, the bike will start and the starter will stay ingaged without touching the starter switch. Since it is under warrantee I took it to the shop. They have had the bike for over a month now. They have replaced the starter selenoid, a relay, and the handle bar switch. The bike still does the same thing. I told them I thought it was a short in the wiring. Their response was there are miles on wire on the bike and they do not know where to start looking. The have contacted the Yamaha service tech for adivse. But at this time they do not know when they will get the the bike fixed and back to me. The weather is perfect for riding and I have no bike to ride.

  21. I've found that SPOT is offering a rebate which is good for a free unit when you sign up for 2 years of service. I've had a modest interest in one of these units for some time and this rebate is about to push me over the edge. However, the reviews I've been reading online tonight about the SPOT service don't look too favorable but it is hard to tell if people are using the unit properly. Does anyone here have personal experience with the SPOT system and if so, what are your thoughts? Thanks, Dennis
  22. I am looking for recommendations for two top RSV dealers in Western Washington. Or to put it another way; Who have you been most satisfied with, both from a service and sales standpoint? I am familiar with Tacoma Motorsports, Eastside Motosport in Bellvue, and I-90 Motorsports in Issaquah. None of these seem to be interested in RSVs and one place I couldn't even get someone to get off the A$$ to find out what I wanted (hello Tacoma). I have been happy with service at I-90 Moto in Issaquah (for my VStar) but their sales group do not seem interested in RSVs. I am willing to spend the bucks at any place between the Oregon border to the Canadian one if I can be satisfied with BOTH the initial experience and (more imortantly) the follow-up service (as they will be my wrench turners). Here is the opportunity to recognize the truely deserving guys (and if you want to warn of the dark side that is OK too). John
  23. Well at MD , I noticed that my pillow top seat was ripping at the seams . Within the pleats where the naugahyde was vulcanized . Scoot is just over 3 years old now with almost 52K miles on it . It's not a tear , rip , or normal wear and tear , just coming apart . I went to my dealer today to show them the seat . Service manager said that Yamaha would more than likely not cover it . Well I said to him , just call the rep and tell them to just call me direct to tell me that if they are not going to cover the seat . I told him also to tell the rep to be prepared to receive numerous e-mails from VR.Org if the seat will not be replaced also . 2 hours later , I got the call from the service manager that I will have a new seat with 2-7 days . So thanks to all of you VR.Org members in advance for standing behind me . Man , can I BS !! :rotf: BEER30
  24. To make a long story short; Yesterday I received an e-mail from Garmin telling me map updates were available....When I went on their site it offered an update disk for $69. or a lifetime update download service for $119. Sounded like a good deal so I took it... The download took over 6 hours on a high speed DSL Then I tried to open the downloaded file which proceeded to grind in the background for 45 minutes totally blocking all attempts to stop it - I thought I had just gotten a virus !!!! I ended up doing a cold boot by turning off the power !!!! After another round of the same I put the download in the trash and deleted it. I then sent 2 e-mails to Garmin explaining the problem and asking for an immediate refund - both as a reply to the purchase confirmation and on the "my garmin" site as a customer service complaint. Today, having received no reply, I called them -the call took well over an hour!!! In the end, the best they would do is promise a refund in "two or three billing cycles" !!!!!!! Needless to say, I unloaded on them the problem of constant freeze-ups and resets by battery removal !!! NO SOLUTION !!!! I asked how they could expect someone to dedicate 6 hour dowloads two or three times a year - NO ANSWER, but the person confirmed that just to open that file on Windows Vista it would take over 1/2 hour!!!! Wow!!!! on mine , it went past 45 minutes and was still going, and I have a fast machine !!!!! So folks, I don't know about you- but I am through throwing money at Garmin and tollerating the bad service and nonexistant response. I don't do business with companies that don't care for their customers.... Next time it's another brand.......
