1. So... after a crappy day of "stuff" Ironhorse Ike and his son-in-law show up at my house late afternoon. They want to ride up the the top of the Catalina Mountains and back...about an 80 mile round trip to around 11,000 foot elevation. Nice and cool for around here. I'm busy and ticked off at some idiot at a Sprint store 2250 miles away..( long story) and too "busy" to go. The wife decides I need to go and basically kicks my butt out the door with them. Fast forward... we are at the top of the mountain getting a drink when a car drives up behind our bikes. The driver and Ike start to talk and the next thing I hear the driver ask is.. One of you guys KIC ? I'm thinking " dang.. that America's Most Wanted " thing works... Of course Ike immediate points to me in his fastest "Not me It's him" manner. Turns out it was DarkLeftArm and his obviously better half. It was nice to meet another Venture rider ( even if he does ride a 2nd Gen ) I'm sure we will be getting together for more rides soon.
2. Well so glad the past week is behind me- its been a very lonngg one. Settling into our new place in Hillsborough, North Carolina. Rented a 26 foot truck and had that packed full. And a car carrier pulling behind that with a car loaded too, made a very long ride. I drove that and wife followed me with my truck. Everything went really well, we just took our time and was close to a uneventfull ride down. Bike made it packed away in the truck and not a single box or anything fell on it thru our 931 mile drive. Wife pulled our motorcycle trailer behind the chevy and had a couple harley guys try to buy it somewhere along the way. I did have one incident, yesterday while moving stuff and getting things set up , I somehow (blaming this on just being very tired and sore) hit my foot with a very heavy appliance and ripped my big toe nail almost off. And boy did it hurt, it put me to my knees for a few minutes. Didnt go to doc today, I had so much to do and the internet/cable guy was here most of the day, but going in the morn as it looks like Ill have to have it removed. And Im not looking forward to that. So gonna take a couple asperin and hit the sack. I need some serious sleep lol ps HeLLo N.C.!! So excited to be here!
3. when we've got a long, fun ride coming up. Two years ago, when our local riding group was heading to Boise for a rally, she took the opportunity to demand a little extra attention. She started spitting fuel from the overflow. After a few attempts to fix the issue on the bike, I came time to install the spare set. I enjoyed the ride the put the original (rebuilt) set back on. All good! Time for another rally, this time in St. George where we can ride Zions Natl Park, North Rim of the Grand Canyon, etc. She's starting to insist on some extra attention..... new tires, front and rear, brake pads all around. Got the new tires on yesterday....nice ride improvement. Today I put in the new rear pads and then moved to the front (right) brakes. All was going well until one of the four pistons wouldn't press back in. I tried everything I could, clamps, water pump pliers.... lucky to have a spare caliper, so, I switched them out. Installed the new pads and bled the line. All is good. Time to go spend a week riding in just a couple of weeks.
4. I did a 750 mile ride this weekend to see what issues might come up in preparation for my 2300 trip to Baton Rouge. Once again, i am reminded how comfortable these bikes are. The ride was Flawless although my mileage isnt where i expect it to be. With 1 remaining bar on the fuel gauge i have only gone about 110 miles. But other than everything is great with the bike. After an oil change and air filter change i will be ready for my 2300 trip to Baton Rouge. I havnt finalized my route but on my return ride, i am considering riding up to Memphis before coming home. One of my stops is going to be Arches monument in Utah. Any ideas on must see sights along that route (Memphis to Utah)?
5. How about getting a few together and go for a ride Sat or Sun anyone interested. Just fire up and go no where special just a ride and????? Joe. GREAT WEEKEND FOR IT JUST SAYING.
6. Anyone in Pa. going out for a ride this weekend? I'll be out and about in the somerset Pa. area. I'll be stoping at the Flight 93 Memorial and then down to Ohiopyle Pa. From there, who knows. If you would like to join me, let me know. The weather couldn't be better! Mark (mag1101)
7. Hello, i'm looking at a 98 Royal Star Tour Classic tomorrow. it has 30K on it, and every accessory i'm looking for already on it(driving lights, driver & passanger floorboards, saddle bags, lindby crash bar with additional highway pegs, and aftermarket exhaust) i'm looking for some input on what you think of Royal Star (obviously it's going to be slightly biased if you're a member of this forum) but what are the pros and cons in your opinion? right now i have a Hyosung GV250. it's miniscule compared to the RS, but i need something bigger because i con't ride for more than 30 minutes witout severe a bachache. i feel in love with this bike as soon as i asaw it (and i looked at a LOT of bikes)the only thing i'm uneasy about is the fact that's it a 98. any advice would be greatly appreciated!

FINALLY: First Ride!

Having bought the bike on December 27th, I've been waiting a while to get out on the open road. Got the call from the shop yesterday that the bike was ready and safety certificate was in hand. Took off for a one hour ride, mixed country road and highway, with my first stop at Tim Horton's - gotta be Canadian, eh. Later I ran down to a friends house in the country - nice windy roads - to fix a fridge. Today, my wife and I will be heading out to my mom's cottage to open up for the season. That will be about a 4-5 hour ride as we will be taking the back roads and ENJOYING our first "two-up" on this bike. Have a GREAT WEEKEND everyone. Ride safe and may the angels ride with you. My dad used to warn me that my guardian angel left when I went over the speed limit or got stupid somehow... Let's all be SAFE and SMART out there this weekend. Cheers and Blessings,
9. just wondering if anyone is riding the U.P. cruise this weekend? looks like a nice ride. heres a link:http://www.upcruising.com/?redcross.
10. There is a chance that I could be riding to the Las Vegas Area around 19 June to 2nd of July. I would like to ride to the Grand Canyon area and into maybe a bit south, kind of want to experience the Arizona landscape. Question 1) How do you ride in the heat, yet still have adiquate protective riding gear. My riding gear consist of Tour Master Transition 2 Jacket with the matchinig Tour Master Venture Pants. Obviously I'll remove the thermal and waterproof lining and have all the jacket and pants air vents open. I also have the Clearview shield with the air vent. Will being lots of bottled water. Question 2) Leaving Las Vegas I would like to ride thru Death Valley going towards Sauramento. But leaving Las Vegas means that I would be going into Death Valley late morning. My 91 MKII gets the normal 40 mpg +or - 2 mpg depending on how I twist the throttle. Being that it looks pretty straight and flat I'm thinking that I should be getting the plus 1 or 2 mpg at about 65 mph. Where are the gas stops? Would I really need to bring an extra gallon of gas? Most of my life I've been able to handle heat better than the average, and not normally a complainier of uncomfortable environments. Except I do complain of high humidity. I just want to ride safe and would appreciate your heat riding experience advise. Also if there are any members that would like to take me on some local rides, I'd be open to that.

13. My wife and I are taking a long weekend memorial day and are looking at the Johnson City area. Any suggestions about places to ride and see there?
14. A few pics we shot today on our ride to Whistler/return ... Nina's "Mother's day therapy"
15. Got out for a ride with my wife and daughter today. I asked Jeannie what she wanted to do, she said a ride to DQ was all We enjoyed an ice cream then across the street to take in the local car cruise an hour there then a nice ride around the GM proving grounds, ending up at our son's home for pizza with the family. A great day
16. Hey, Had the local shop pull the front fork to replace the leaky seals and they came back to me with news that the lower guide bushing needs to be replaced and they're not sure they can find it. I've looked around (online) and have found a "metal, slide 1" available from a number of places but no one lists the guide bushing. This is the one at the bottom end of the inner tube... it's pressed on to the tube. Anyone know where I might get one??? Help... I can't ride till I get one cuz they won't safety certify the bike like it is. And I REALLY want to ride. I'm almost in tear every time I see a rider go by... help, please... Mark
17. Well, I'm the proud owner of a brand new Harley Electra Glide Ultra Classic but it was tough to part with the RSTD. It was a nice bike and very mechanically sound. It had everything I wanted at the time of purchase but as the years went by I found I wanted more. Alas, I just can't bring myselft to upgrade to the Venture knowing Yamaha hasn't done anything to really update or improve it in years. I'm not bashing - please don't think I am. They are really great bikes. I just decided they aren't my cup of tea. So, I intend to hang around this forum so I can continue to learn from a very knowledgable group of riders. I know there are a few out there that ride HD's. So, I'll become one of the few. Below is a pic of my new ride. It's Ember Red Sunglo in color. In the sunlight it sparkles with gold flecks. It's really nice paint. This picture doesn't do it much justice but you get the idea. Keep it between the ditches everyone. Les
18. We have all had times when we were afraid of our bike for one reason or another. Close call on a ride, a project we have never taken on before, or just being out there in a difficult situation far from home. But the tables have turned for me ...... I think the bike is a bit nervous if not down right frightened of what I might do to it next. I think taking it's nuts off the handlebars last week may have been more than it could deal with. Since last season I've been fighting a glitch in the CLASS controller. Not just one ... but three of them. Been through the solder fixes and cleaning up the connections all the way back to the compressor, chasing power and on every one of them I'd get an error code, or a couple different ones everytime. Sometimes it would run for a few second then error out or sometime get nothing at all. I'd change one out for another controller and start with different codes or failures. Never really bothered me as I had good pressure on the shock when it all started but every time I would try to run the controller I would lose a pound or two. Over time, it was getting lower and with my big ham bone parked on it I was feeling the effect when it got down to 35 lbs pressure. It was time...... I had bought the fittings to do the schrader valve mod to be done and stop fretting over it. Time to get my smooth ride back. Not something I wanted to do but ya know.... sometimes ya got to do it. So I had the bike on the lift, I got the work bench folded down from the wall and laid out the needed tools and parts. I laid out the teflon tape and fittings for the schrader fix. The cutters I needed and all the sharp tools handy. I plugged in the soldering pencil for the one last shot and final attempt at saving the CLASS. I felt I was being watched. I looked around and it was just me and the bike. Just us and the cutting tools and that smoking soldering pencil. I stuck the key in the switch to check one more time for a reading. It just shot me one more defiant look and flashed "35". Popped the release for the housing and lifted it out. As I pulled it up I brushed my finger against the button and the bike started to vibrate. I waited for it to code out but it kept going. The display showed 40, then 50 then 60 and stopped at 71. I stood there waiting for something, anything else to happen. I pressed the lower button and the pressure smoothly dropped to the bottom. I ground my teeth and closed Imy eyes and pressed the button to raise the pressure again. I could feel the bike vibrate and it stopped again. When I looked it was back at 71 lbs again. I could almost feel the submission. I had scared the bike to my will. I was the Alpha! So I celebrated with a ride. Been riding for two day now and made pressure adjustments at every stop I'd make. It's working flawlessly just like the old days. Enjoying the ride again on these danged Nebraska roads. So for now I'm going to keep the soldering pen in the saddlegbag and those nuts I took off.... On a chain around the handlebars. Just a reminder of who is in charge. How else can I explain it? The Gremlins did it? NAH.... nobody would belive that! Mike
19. In a small group ride, I rode behind a set of Twin Harleys, His and Hers. They were exact duplicates right down to the last rivit....beautiful bikes. The colors were the only difference. Every accessory added they had to pay twice. They even sound the same. That was all I hear for the next 8 hours of riding. The Thundering of the Famous Harley. I could not even enjoy the throaty sound of my 91 VR, when hitting my throttle for the Harley Thunder drowned my 91VR out to liken an electric bike. Next time, I'll lead and show them what progressive springs are all about...
20. My wife and I are 50ish, and she was always terrified of bikes. Well, 2 yrs ago I talked her into riding with me on the Vulcan 900, and although a little scared at first, she thought it was ok. Problem was the small seat for her, and feeling of being maxed out on load for me. I bought the '85 a month or so ago, and was instructed to "practice" a lot before we went 2 up. Good advise, actually. I put about 500mi and new tires on it and she decided she felt safe enough. Let me tell you, after pulling almost 400lbs of us around on a 900cc cruiser, that VR is like a jet airplane for 2 in comparison. She said she was real comfortable, loved the stereo and smoother ride. Only thing that made her paranoid was being able to see the mirrors and cars in them, lol. Power wise, I couldn't really tell she was there. I think she'll be ready for more regular riding in the future. Another happy 1st gen owner here.
21. This ? is for MKII riders with Progressive Springs weighing in at around 170 lbs plus or minus 5 lbs. I've installed my Progressive about 500 miles ago and I really like the ride in the corners and on really smooth roads. The slight bumps are getting to the point of being annoying.
22. I am new to the forum and have already learned a great deal. Thanks for all the great suggestions and ideas. I look forward to meeting new friends thanks to a good friend of mine who introduced me to this forum. Thanks KIC I bought my "83" Venture back in October 2011 with only 5,400 miles and it now has 7,400. It's a great ride. I understand she's known on the forum as a 1st gen. Sorry 2nd gen'ers...lol Haha, had to say that... Just kidding... Thanks again and great riding...
23. The picture is of my new (used) trailer. Gettin' ready to ride!
24. I completed part of my ride of the Tour of Honor to visit 7 memorial sites around Texas. I signed up for this ride back in Dec. The sites became available April 1st. Dave Zipcode and I attempted back on April 6th when he had his rear tire go flat on the way to the first site in Fredericksburg. Then he went down with his wife a week ago. Sure missed having him ride along, but glad he and Jamie are ok. I was planning to complete the ride of visiting all 7 sites in an Iron Butt Saddlesore 2000 in under 48hrs. The ride was good, turned Hot in North Texas, great weather, finished the required 4 sites in 1000 miles under the 24hr. Grabbed one more site north of Dallas at 12:30am. Headed for home, stopped for some rest along the way. Amazing you can fall alseep on the bike lying on the tank bag. By then I was up for over 24hrs. Got home after 27hrs on the road. Decided on not going to south Texas to grab the remaining 2 memorials. Needed to get some good rest. Was about 25 miles short of being able to submit the ride as a Bunburner 1500 in 36hrs. So I went for a short ride to get me over the #. Here are some pics of the memorial sites I visited.
25. Just a couple of pics from our ride, Maria is the pretty one, and still looks good after puttin up with me for 29 years!
