  1. i am looking at replacing the front tire and want to know what tire you guys run on the front to match this dunlop k627 rear that i already have. thanks, Scott
  2. MY OLD 93 HAS OVER A 100,000 MILES ON IT NOW AND I REPLACED THE FRONT FORK SPRINGS LAST SPRING,SO THIS WINTER I THOUGHT I WOULD WORK ON THE REAR SUSPENSION,SO I GOT A REAR LINKAGE ARM FROM EBAY AND IM GOING TO REPLACE THE BUSHINGS, AND IM THINKING ABOUT REPLACING THE REAR SHOCK WITH A NEW Progressive Suspension 420 Series Shocks, Aluminum. HAS ANYONE ON HERE TRYED ONE OF THESE SHOCKS BEFORE. THEY ARE KINDA HIGH PRICE AND WOULD LIKE SOME INPUT BEFORE I GET ONE,THANKS
  3. Well, yesterday I decided to take my new battery back to the store. It was pulling down to 7 volts during the initial starter inrush. It tested well on a load until the store turned it up to about 175 amp load. Then it fell flat on its face. Got another battery and gave it a 6-8 hour charge. Stuffed it in Mocha and hit the starter. WOW- starter has so much speed and torque I thought it was a different bike! BAD NEW BATTERY. Now I have a new fuse panel, new wiring, new master fuses, new 4GA battery cables, new grounds and a happy grin. I even put in an extra circuit from the battery to a relay for driving lights. The system holds 14.4 at idle, 14.6 at 2K and above. When I step on the rear brake it goes to 14.8 for a moment. Must be the anti-dive and the rear brake lights. Thanks to all who gave suggestions and told their tales of electrical woe. It all helped. I will take pictures of the problem areas I found and my cables and fusebox for our archives. Happy New Year JB and the now well charged Mocha
  4. Has anyone purchased one of the bike haulers that mounts in the receiver of a car or truck trailer hitch and secures the front wheel allowing the rear wheel to ride on the road? If so, what has been your experience?
  5. Ok, this is where I am. I have rebuilt all 3 brake calipers and the rear master cylinder. After plenty of bleeding, both the bike and me, I finally got the blasted thing to hold pressure. Went for a quick test run and everything was going fine and then the darn brakes locked and would not let go. I pulled out the ol` wrench and bleed of the rear and wamo`, I was off again. Did a few laps around the pond and then they where dragging again. This time I bleed of the left front, and then I was off again. OK, I check the rear master cylinder, made sure the little hole was clear, and tried it again. After several goes, sure enough they started dragging again….. So what do I do now? You guys have been a wealth of info and anymore would be great!!!!! Oh Yea, if it helps I have a 1985 VR. and the right brake (front) is working just fine.
  6. Well I guess I really am joining the club. After my ride from Brisbane on arriving home in Perth I noticed a small leak coming from the rear shock. Not knowing what I now know (thanks to all here) my mechanic sent it off to Sydney to be rebuilt. After a long silence I called him up - wots the go bro? Can't be rebuilt! Damn. Anyway I saved my mechanic a long time searching for a replacement after reading "Spears" troubles in Australia replacing his and immediately ordered one from FlatoutMotorcycles. Hopefully it will arrive here next week and my bike will be back on the road in time for Xmas. Summer holidays here.
  7. Hey fellows, I am a first time poster with a problem. I have an 87 Venture that keeps fouling out the rear plugs. I beleive they are cylinders 1 & 3. I recently purchased this as a project and boy is it one. I need direction. I have checked the diaphragms and slides, no issues. I put new plugs in the rear and it ran like a scalded dog for about 20-30 miles but has slowly degraded back to a backfiring, two rear cylinders only, beast. When I first got the bike the two rear exhaust gaskets were worn completely out, pipes slid back and fourth inside the exhaust manifold. Any help would be appreciated and if this has been covered before I apologize. I have searched for old post's regarding this issue and could not find any. Thanks,
  8. Has anyone tried adjusting the rear pedal height? Could the angle applying the brake have any effect on pressure causing the rear brake lockup? Is there any better control if the front brakes are used first and than add in the rear brakes?
  9. hey guys, need a few parts for a '93 VR. 1. left side louvers 2. left side turn signal lens 3. left side chrome piece with the red lights in it (part of the rear accesory lighting package) that is under the saddle bag and curves around and ties into the center piece of the rear bumper. 4. the CB remote for the rider that mounts on the left handlebar. If anyone has any of these and wants to let them go please let me know, or if you know any one who has any of these let me know. Dropped bike in Aug. and didn't know if I wanted to get back on and ride, but have decided to fix it and ride some more. Thanks Don H.
  10. Why do I not see VMAX rears for an '85? I though the VMAX came out in '85? Was the Venture and VMAX rear that different in '85?
  11. Some one mentioned awhile back to use Amsoil Syn. Hypoid 75/140 in the rear end.... question is, has any one used Super Tech full syn. 75/140 ?? and would it be ok to use??

    tci woes no

ok i used all the info you guys helped me with and did the deed removing the fairing (which has several biggy cracks in it i discovered - anyone have one for sale?) and got it all apart but first switched the left front and rear coil wires and the spark plug wires to the cylinders. when i could easily reach them.. put the battery in and.... drum rollzzz!!! it worked fine.... before i decided to do this the spark faded within 5 seconds on the rear left cylinder.... fully expecting that to happen but this time with the front one because of switching the wires around it ran fine... still removed the tci and remounted it to the air box.. i'm taking her for a test run tomorrow if it doesnt snow too much... idled smooth ran great but still had to be put all back together.... so i fixed it by touching it i guess but had you guys not freely offered advice and helped me i would have gotten frusterated and used some elbow grease and a match thank you all again now i know someones gonna say that it was a wire but i know it was my touch
  13. Hadn't seen this one before. It doesn't use a hitch. Connects to the rear axle. http://www.motogoodies.com/
  14. After a long dry spell, Dunlop has just produced a limited run on the MU90HB16 RWL rear tire. Ken
  15. Just wondering if anyone has ever replaced the rear air shock on a RSV? I must have damaged mine putting air in today as it now leaks out. It's amazing how fast it will fill up from 20 to 100 lbs of air. Also, any ideas where to get one at a reasonable cost? Thanks
  16. I have put my bike up on the jack stand for the winter and was wondering if I need to support the rear tire/shock? With it sitting unsupported for long periods of time cause any problems?
  17. Hey all, I believe several of you guys have exchanged the rear end for the v-max style setup. Can't seem to locate any posts regarding performance, power etc. So my question to those that have done it, is basically how do you like it, are you happy you did it, how does it affect overall performance of the bike, etc. My rear is noisy, and was thinking about going that route, but looking for some genuine feedback first. Thanks, Art
  18. With all of the posts about final drive problems and noises, I thought this post might help. I saw it on a Gold Wing forum, but it certainly applies to the Venture/RSTD rear drive unit as well. They are nearly identical to the GW drive. http://www.calsci.com/motorcycleinfo/Shaft.html
  19. It as a nice warn, sunny afternoon on Novervember 1st when I started down a long, winding hill running about 25 mph. Suddenly, I realize some big dude is standing over me asking me what day it is. I finally gather enough strength to tell him to go ask sombody that cares. I just wanted to sleep for a bit longer. It seems that as I was going down the hill using my rear brake to slow me, I hit a bump in the road that made me mash my rear brake pedal more than gently. This started a slide that I did not recover from. The bike "highsided" and threw me over the guard rail to land on a steep bank on my back. The bike went over on it's right side, slid backwards for about 20 ft the came to a rest next to the guard rail. It felt strange to wake up, look at the bike, and realize it was going the wrong direction and was on the wrong side to have been making the turn I was making. Fortunately. the damage to me was minor. I can thank My Lord and the riding gear and helmet for protecting me. Other than a mild concussion and a very sore and bruised back I am OK. The bike on the other hand did not fare well. I was surprised at the small amount of damage that turned into a $7,800 (US) estimate. Because this is over 75% of the listed value of the bike, the insurance company is going to total it. I was offered what I thought was a very fair settlement and I could keep the bike. So this is what I plan on doing. The majority of the parts I will clean up and continue to use since they are only minor scratches on them. But there are a couple of major parts that i would like to replace with new ones. I will list these in another thread to see you anyone has some stock parts that they would like to get rid of. I know everyone in here shares a bit of the pain when a Venture Rider goes down so I want to thank each of you in advance for your prayers and "Get Well Wishes". From the deepest reaches of my heart, THANK YOU to each and every one of you.
  20. Just got a call from the yamaha tech rep. They are going to rebuild the rear end of my bike starting at the rear swing arm and going back. Maybe this will be the end of my problems.
  21. I know from real world experiance that the 2nd Gens have a much too touchy rear brake. Or at least in the two that I have owned. I plan to install the TCB Lifesaver Valve and I'm not sure which level of slip I need. I thinking either the 30-40 green or the 40-50 red. Anyone have one already mounted and can post results?
  22. This is unbelievable. As a quick recap, I took my Venture in to have a wider windshield and passing lamps installed by a dealership (Hahm Motorsports in Anaheim) and they basically jacked up my bike while in their possession (i.e. fairing, lowers, and highway peg). I went to pick the bike up after all the replacement of the aforementioned damaged parts and low and behold, they managed to back the bike up into something and caved in one of the saddle bag guards in the rear. I just took the bike with me and had them order me a new set of guards (on them) that I will install myself. This is incompetence to the "n" th degree. It would almost be comical, if it weren't happening to me.
  23. Last Tuesday I left my bike at the dealer because I don't have a whine, it is a scream. The service manager called me this morning and said he finally got to test drive my bike and it "screams like a banshee." He doesn't think it is the clutch basket but thinks it may be the rear end. As most of you know from my previous post I am on my fourth rear diff now. The service manager has asked someone from yamaha to come in and see what they can do. The rep will be there tomorrow. If they can't get my bike back to normal I am starting the battle with yamaha to get a new different bike. The service manager did tell me that he is seeing more and more ventures with the chirp and whine problem. I like my bike but can't take the screaming anymore.
  24. This summer I replaced the tires on the '06 Venture, deciding to use the same Dunlop D-404's that came on it. I ordered front and rear from SW Moto Tire and I ordered the same sizes that came on the bike (150/90-HB-15 rear and 150/80-HB-16 front). The new rear tire is not the same size as the one that came on the bike...although all markings indicate they should be. Once installed, the new rear tire has about .5" more clearance between tire and swing arm...and the guy who mounted the rear tire commented on the difference in sizes. Yes, the wheel is properly mounted and aligned. I wrote to SW Moto Tire describing the situation and asking why two tires supposed to be identical were not. Blaine responded, "Sorry I do not know the answer to that question." This was not particularly helpful and Blaine apparently was not particularly curious to learn more about his business. I wrote to Dunlop with the same description and question. After a long time, A. Wittmeyer wrote, "Thank you for taking the time to contact us. We apologize for the delay in response time. We have been attending various motorcycle rallies around the country and have gotten a little behind in e-mails. It is very difficult to compare the dimensions of a new tire versus a used tire. A used tire will change dimensions due to growth and load. In all likelihood, the tires were very similar in dimension when both were new." This response I found to be amazing. The Venture is the 37th motorcycle I've owned over 40 years of riding. The bikes have been all types and sizes, but they have all had one thing in common...they have all had tires on them. So, I have seen a few tires in my days and not a single one of them has demonstrated any capacity whatever to grow. Nor do I recall ever reading a technical article discussing the growth of tires. My question to this august group is, have any of you experienced this tire growth phenomenon? My tendency here is to call BS on Dunlop and chide SW Moto Tire for a lack of professionalism. Have I missed something and are my expectations for vendors and manufacturers out of line? Thanks, JPH
  25. As I mentioned awhile back, I recently had my carbs synched, rear drive serviced, head bearings serviced and adjusted and new Metz Commanders installed. I love how the Metz track and the twisties are a WHOLE lot more fun. The bike leans itself into the turns (or so it seems) and all of the wobble is gone. Low rpm power is much improved and the bike is very pleassurable at all speeds. A problem though. Reat tire has a slow leak. About 5lbs per week. When we pulled the tire off the rear, it was full of green Slime. What a mess. I have inspected the rear tire and found no nails etc. Ran soapy water all around tire and rim, and checked the valve stem. No apparent leaks. Because the PO had installed Slime, I am suspicious of a leaking rim. Anybody with experience with this sort of problem and any easy fixes short of wheel replacement? Will Ride-On work for this type of problem? DJ
