  1. I leave work at 1:00 am every night. The traffic lights do not change to green untill aproached by a cage and ignores motorcycles. When driving my truck I have notice that the light changes in 16 seconds. So, when I approach the light with my motorcycle I count off 20 seconds then go through if the way is clear. Last night I was pulled over for crossing on a red light. I explained the above situation to the officer and after verifying my license he let me off. Who is too say the next time I will get let off though and as I explained to him I can't sit there all night waiting for a cage to approach the light. I know this is not an uncommon occurance, so how do the rest of you deal with these situations
  2. Does anyone have a right side throttle grip they want to get rid of. The '99's is just plain ugly. Too many twists on it. The left side looks great, and would like to find something in about the same condition. The right looks like it's shrunk and pulled out of the chrome ring and the ends are curled up. Attached are a couple of picks. Anyway hoping someone may have a grip laying around after putting on some Kuryakyns.
  3. The bad part: I ended up taking Friday off as a vacation day after getting to work because I had several things I needed to do or wanted to do, and work was not one of them. I ended up making about a 30 mile round trip run to look at a Miata for a friend and after stopping to get a bite to eat, the bike started running real bad, alternating from 3 to 4 cylinders. Then I started having a rear end wobble and pulled over. When I got off and saw the rear tire was going down, I also noticed gas making a puddle under the bike. I jumped back on it as there was a convience store about a mile away and it did have an air hose available. After getting there and airing up my rear tire twice, I finally got it on the center stand. I then laid down and rotated the tire, which was a new E-3 that I had just put on, I found a hole where it had been punchered. I pulled out my plug kit, plugged it while laying on very hot pavement at about 95º in the sun, and then took off 20 miles for home, with gas leaking out a lot. I barely made it home, going from a full tank when I started out to a blinking light. but I made it. I pulled off the air box and sure enough, I had the right rear carb with fuel running out the over flow tube. Before I took anything apart, I pulled off the inlet hose for that carb and using an air nozzle with a tube on, I blew air into it. Yes, gas did spray out a jet or two, but it ended up working fine. I then took off the wheel and removed the tire and buffed down the area where I had put the plug and put on a heavy duty patch. I then put the tire back on, checked balance, and put everything back together. The good part: Got up Saturday morning and picked up a friend and before the weekend was over, I put 570 miles on the bike, which ran great and got from 43 to 45mpg. Of these miles, only about 40 were interstate and most were two lane with one run being from Cherokee, NC on the Blue Ridge Parkway up to just past Little Switzerland. This was at temperatures in mid 70's to mid 80's. knowing that down in the valleys it was mid 90's at least. If I was going to encounter this type of a problem, I was really glad it happened when it did because that two day ride had a lot of time in remote areas with no phone service. It ended up being a great weekend. RandyA
  4. I am really starting to get frustrated...perhaps I should have just bought a new bike instead of thinking it would be fun to wrench on this one! About ready to call off the motorcycle trip with the wife this weekend and take the car instead. Anyways, enough of my whining. My speedo was working fine but during the past week when I had both wheels off to replace the driveshaft oil seal and lube all the splines I decided to grease the speedo cable. No problem right? So I thought. I was just taking a test drive and, wham...speedo started flickering and then dropped to zero. Odometer no longer incrementing and blinkers not cancelling. I pulled over and pulled the cable out, looked just like it did the first time I pulled it out...long coil cable thing with a square head on the end. I'm assuming that means it isn't broken. Did I perhaps not get it seated all the way before, did I break something else? The speedo gear is in the slot of the front fork so I assume that is OK. I am wondering if I didn't route the cable properly around the forks as there is some rub on the rubber of the outer cable. I can post any pictures needed...just looking for some help...AGAIN!
  5. Guys! I removed my rear wheel. I cleaned all the old grease off. I applied the Honda 60 Moly. I pulled the pumpkin, and the driveshaft. The driveshaft was bone DRY on the engine end, but not damaged. Some wear, but looked ok. A little wet on the pumpkin end- guess my seal is rotten. I liberally applied the moly on both ends. I pulled the cir-clip off the rear wheel and the dampner pins were BONE DRY, some surface rust, but not pitting. I lubed all of them. I reassembled the whole kabudle and tested it at 85mph. NO Roar! All I could hear when I pulled in the clutch was WIND! There is a tiny bit of whine (barely audible at 55 and about 35 mph). All I hear is the slight muffle of exhaust coming through my worn out sleeves on the mufflers where they meet the pipes. I even love hearing the chirping! I can't believe how this worked out, You People are AMAZING.... Great Balls of Fire- THANKS!!!!!
  6. Took wife down to river to fish on bike. First off the road leading down to parking area had deep ruts and washout area that would've love to have grabbed my tires, anybody who has lived near a state park knows what I mean. We finagal (sp) our way down to the lot and it looks pretty good for having been flooded a week or so ago so I start to position bike with trailer (had to carry poles, tackle box, cooler etc...) in a position that would be easy to pull right out. lo and behold rear tire drops down 3 inches. Now I mean like right now. Heck, wife stands all of 5'3" and she was flat footed while I appraised the problem and she held up the bike. Appears the sand on top was dry but underneath was like quicksand. It buried my 800 lb plus bike in a second. Detached the trailer to reduce weight on the rear axel and it was'nt gonna move. Luckily 2 guys showed up looking for a beer I think and pulled me backwards out of the mess. If they hadn't came along I wouldve been there till the sand dried or son-in-law came to get us. I've riden dirt bikes many times and pulled them out but none were as bad as this oversized paper weight. And that was my day. Oh yea, then the wife beat me catching fish. I think I need more beer. God Bless. mike
  7. RJD

    back up fuse

I blew a fuse for my passing lights, so I had the cover off the fuse box. there is a fuse in there marked "back up fuse" Since I don't have any back up lights, I am wondering what that fuse is connected to. I have the fuse pulled right now and everything still seems to be working Bob
  8. I need some help on the front forks. I am trying to relace the seal and put progressive springs in them with air suspension. I have both forks off the bike, I took the springs out. Pulled the dust cover off and then the clip under. Finally I pulled the gold colord washer out. What I need to know is how do I get the tubes out of the lower forks with out damaging them. :confused24: I read the post on here about doing this and the only post I can find is Freebirds and his are still on the bike. Everything else is just replacing springs on the bike. I took the forks off because I want to make sure that they are strait.
  9. Below are a couple of pictures of a plug I pulled from bike. Any comments on its appearance and related engine tweaks would be appreciated. Plug was pulled after low speed ride & pulling into garage. Iridium plug. About 1300 miles on it. 1300 engine Vmax heads Mains 150 jet PAJ2 160 jet Four 7/16" dia holes in air box lid K&N air filter Gary http://i1007.photobucket.com/albums/af193/gdingy101/PICT0288.jpg http://i1007.photobucket.com/albums/af193/gdingy101/PICT0289.jpg
  10. Well I pulled up to the gas pump today and pulled the ignition key opened gas cap and filled tank. Put key back in ignition and key will not turn????? Handlebars are not locked and key works every where else (gas cap and bag locks) any ideas??? Had to load bike on trailer to get it home. Any help would be appreciated
  11. Went for a ride this evening seeing how it was/is going to be the few left this year before I depart somewhere southward. I noticed my leg getting warm and smelled something funny. low and behold anti freeze! temp gauge went sky high so I pulled over under some lights waited for it to cool down I pulled the radiator cap off and found white goop inside in the 25 years + or driving I never saw one like this. Is there special anti-freeze in this or what????? So I put in some 50/50 about half a gallon and rode home now to tear apart and flush. Can I run prestone super flush thru this bike???
  12. Rode my bike to work (as most days) and either mon or tues a couple on a black rsv pulled into my parking lot at olsens plaza in petoskey, they pulled right up and looked at my bike for a minute so I head out to say hello as they pulled off. They headed south on US-31 just wondering if it was anyone from here?
  13. Sorry to repost this one folks.. My radio bit the dust the other week and still no dice trying to get it to work. I put my buddy's radio in it and that works.. so i know my unit it dead or something is amiss with that box. Does anyone know what the YELLOW banded cable does? When I pulled the connectors apart to take the radio out, the protective outter cap came off, so I'm wondering if perhaps I broke something in there etc etc..
  14. So I got my new speedo cable installed and started re-installing the panel , 'xcept one of the rubber bushing is gone:confused07:, it was there when I pulled it out though. Pulled the whole dash, removed the headlight, dug around through the wiring, looked on the floor, tried shaking the bike (yeah right!). Used a flashlight to see better. I have no clue:think::think: guess i'll see if i can get anew one at the parts store, bummer!
  15. As I was coming to work at about 7am, I came upon a city cop in front of me that quickly moved into the right lane on a 40mph 4 lane city street. After I passed, he moved back in behind me and paced me for close to a mile. He then blue lighted me and I stopped, blocking the right lane. I knew I was not speeding, so I was curious as to why he stopped me. When he came up beside me, he advised me that running a strobe in my headlight was against the law. I told him that it was interesting that I have had a strobe in my bike for 13 years and was within about 30 miles of putting 100,000 miles on it and he was the first that had ever taken issue with it. I also told him that I had the flash frequency set slower so that it would not be confused as an emergency vehicle. When he told me that for sure I had better not be caught by a Tennessee State Trooper. I told him I had been pulled over by a TST for a strobe, but it was in my taillight lens, activated by the brake. The TST told me that he pulled me over because I had it behind a red lens and a colored strobe was not legal. I also told the city cop that I showed the TST my headlight strobe and he did not take issue with it. I told him I did it to be seen for safety"s sake and he admitted there had been 5 cyclist's death in our area so far this year. He then told me that he also rode a motorcycle. When I asked him what he rode, he would only say that he had two "sport bikes". He told me that he was not going to give me a ticket, but he sure did have an arrogent attitude. I wonder if I can go another 13 years and 100,000 miles without getting pulled over for a strobe? RandyA
  16. Last night, on my way home from work, a young lady on a cell phone pulled out beside me and sideswiped my 89 Royale. Fortunately the gear all worked flawlessly and I got away with some aches and pains. Here is the part I want to share with you all: I was on a boulevard (center divider) with 2 lanes both directions. I was in the left lane and the young lady was coming from the left on a merge across the boulevard. She was at a stop sign, lost, on the cell phone trying to get directions and decided to go just as I came beside her. We were the only cars in the vicinity. Now, why would I be in the left lane with a car merging from the left with the right lane wide open? Because I was distracted. My head was elsewhere. Now, she shouldn't have pulled out into me like that but if I'd been in the right lane (where a smart biker would have been in that situation) this wreck would not have happened. I wouldn't have the bruises, the Venture wouldn't be significantly damaged and the young lady's prom night would not have been spoiled. I hope I never forget the lesson and I wanted to post it to remind all my friends here to stay sharp!
  17. Another newbie question. There is a handle by the passenger seat, if I follow the cable it goes to the passenger backrest. What is this supposed to do? I pulled up on the lever and I think it is supposed to allow access to the rear compartment? Thanks in advance, Don
  18. I pulled the drive shaft out of my shaft unit. Lots of moly grease on it and everything looked great. The seal I bought is the correct part number ( 93108-43013-00), but when I slide it onto the drive shaft it slides over the area that the snap ring and washer go but it 'appears' that it's inner diameter is too small to go over the flat spot that the old seal was on. Does it stretch that much?? It seemed like the old seal was glued to the driveshaft. What glue are we supposed to use?? Frank D.
  19. Well, as it seems to happen, 16 year old's get bored in the winter, and we need things to do. My project this weekend is mounting an old snowblower motor on a bicicle. The snowblower has a seperate disingage, so where the front brakes would normally be, I'm going to mount the engage to it. It will only go with the "clutch" pulled in. It has a pretty high idle, which is no big deal, and the throttle will really open it up. If i have to, i can do some cutting and welding and get the belt drive into more of a chain sproket. It will be cool to see how fast it will go with the 15 gears, so we'll see.
  20. Skydoc1 (Earl Harrel) gave me a hint that there was this Venture 2nd.Gen carb for sale on eBay. Please have a look at the pictures if they show up - or the eBay auction site (item number:130270132573) and advice me if this is the whole unit or if it looks like there is something vital missing. Have not pulled the carb from my bike yet so I am not sure how this should look like. Have been having trouble locating a 32mm second Gen. carb for sale and would hate to see this one slide if it is the whole unit. Note that I am not looking for the breather box or anything - just the carb. Just don´t know what the whole unit would look like when been pulled. Thanks in advance and friendly regards from Iceland (Norway at the moment). Jonas
  21. Hi All Well on new years eve we had a nice party at the fire station. Christy had to work at 911 and would join me after she got out at 2300hrs. At about 2320 hrs I got a phone call Christy had went off the road to avoid a car that had pulled out into the road. She went over a bank and hit a stump. Christy is fine just some pain from the seat belt. The car is totaled but what makes me mad is the person that pulled out in front off her just left her and didnt call 911 or check to see if she was ok. Ive been in the fire service for 35 years. I could never just drive away. Bull463:soapbox:
  22. Just upgraded from a 97 tour classic to a 99 venture. The bike runs great. I drove it home and filled it up so it would be ready for work in the morn. Go to start it and battery is drained so low it wouldn't start. This is a good battery as i pulled it from my tc. The charging system is working putting out 13.5v at idle. I disconneted the pos cable from bat and put a test light between the pos term and the positive cable and it lights up. I pulled all fuses, disconnected all connections under both side covers, under the tank and it is still on. I pulled the front fairing and disconneted every electrical connector there and still on. I pulled the lower right fairing and disconnected all connections there :crying:and the the test light is still on, Any ideas? Thanks
  23. My apologies up front if this is an incorrect post....My First. I have a 1983 Venture Royale 1200 that just now started this prob. the neutral light comes on whenever you even slightly pull in the lever - in every gear. It stays on when the lever is pulled and during shifting. the only thing I have noticed is that finding neutral seems to be harder (more touchy) than before. Any ideas? Thanks in advance Roger
  24. Well we pulled into the driveway about 5:30 this evening. Got up this morning around 8:00 and had to put on the rain gear to get the bike loaded up. Rained all the way home. Even had to stop a couple of times due to heavy rain. So in the morning when I left Arkansas it was 80 degrees and climbing. Was starting to get use to mid 90s and sun. Was 61 in Coldwater last night when we pulled into the motel. Yesterday stopped in Indianapolis to pick up a shield for my helmet. Really glad I did. Anyhow we had an AWSOME time with all you folks that made it. Those of you that didn't make it... that really sucks bad. Looking forward to the next one. Brad, Lonna, Hal and Gayle... it was great sharing a room with you guys. You are all so easy to get along with.. Loved getting to know you all better. Wrongway. (Allan and Dee).. Thanks again for letting us stay at your place on the way down. Looking forward to hanging out with you again sometime soon. When we started unpacking we found our room key.... Guess I'll have to mail it back Dan and Rose... Love you guys.. Had a great time with you.. I hear you are home safe and sound BUT I thought you were making a detour to Deals Gap on the way home??? I want to thank Squid for installing the rebuilt clutch master cylinder and thank Bob for supplying it. Seems to be working fine now. Thanks to Hal and Gayle for arranging the room for us.. Almost didn't make the trip. Ok I guess that's enough rambling for now.. Wayne
  25. My wife and I decided to go for a ride downtown in Toronto last Friday night. It was a warm and muggy night. My bike had been sitting in the garage all day. I pulled out the choke and pushed the start button. It didn't want to start right away but fired up after a second push on the button. I reduced the choke as soon as it started and pushed it off entirely within a minute and a half. Off we rode. Me on my 06 RSTD and my wife on her Suzuki C50. Everything seemed fine until we got downtown near the lake and my bike started missing on one cylinder at idle (a popping sound on the right side that my wife said she could hear as she sat ten feet behind me on her bike) and baby backfires on deceleration. I was also noticing the smell of gas. We turned around and headed for home. I wound it up in first and second a couple of times as I pulled away from traffic lights and it purred like a kitten each time. After that the problem was gone. No missing, no backfiring, and no gas smell. The next morning I noticed fuel spots down the length of my driveway and a larger spot where I had stopped briefly before we headed out onto the street. I hopped in my truck and headed to NAPA to pick up a can of Sea Foam. I poured about half a can of Sea Foam into the nearly full fuel tank and have put a couple of hundred more kilometers under the wheels during the last two days with no further signs of trouble. I pulled the right rear spark plug and it appeared to be clean and dry. Didn't feel like pulling the fuel tank to check the front one! Has anybody else experienced this problem? I don't want to find myself in this position during our upcoming bike holiday.
