  1. I would like to be added to the list. Thanks
  2. I have checked ground connectons, regulator connections and all wiring harness connections and all info you guys have given. I havent had a battery drain in the last 5 days. The charging has been intermitent with the old regulator. I drove it 70 miles yesterday (I put a volt meter on to verify charging status) and the charging system was putting out over 13v. I go to drive it to work this morning and it started charging at 13v and 2 min later would not charge (below 12v) so I didn't drive it. I ordered a new regulator and it came in today. I put it on and the bike is charging. The problem is at an idle it is at 13.9 without the passing lights or radio on. With the passing lights on, it drops to 13v at idle. No change with radio on and with turn signals on the voltage gauge needle bounces between 12.8 and 13v. On the road with radio, passing lights on, 13.0v unless I chank up the rpms nearing the rev limiter the gauge drops back to 12.2 and is bouncing until the rpms drop. At steady 80mph on the freeway, gauge reads 12.8 at 70mph it reads 13.0. There is no increase in charging voltage by reving the engine and holding the rpms up. Is this normal? If not, does anyone have any ideas.
  3. I put everything back together and started it. 13.8v at idle. I go for a ride of about 60 miles. 45 miles in my radio starts acting up then my headlight goes dim and my speedo starts acting funny. I turn all acc off and head for home. Bike dies 4 miles from home. No juice in the battery. All bad things have happy endings. My son in law is coming home from work and passes by me and stops. I jump battery and let charge 10 min and drive home with dimming lights. Put meter on and not charging. I charge batt and get online to see what advice you experts can give. I clean ground cable conn and pull regulator and look at connections. all look good. start bike with meter running and get 13.12v at idle. rev to about 2k and 14.1v. let it run for a while (reg on floor and is hot) and stops charging. battery starts to drain. Is it heat or bad regulator??
  4. all fuses out of both fuse boxes. if i disconnect the rectifier/regulator my test light goes out slowly. If I plug the regulator back in the test light is bright. Is it posible the regulator is bad. The connections are clean and the charging system is putting out 13.5v at an idle. Could this be the drain and is there a way to benc test the regulator??
  5. Just upgraded from a 97 tour classic to a 99 venture. The bike runs great. I drove it home and filled it up so it would be ready for work in the morn. Go to start it and battery is drained so low it wouldn't start. This is a good battery as i pulled it from my tc. The charging system is working putting out 13.5v at idle. I disconneted the pos cable from bat and put a test light between the pos term and the positive cable and it lights up. I pulled all fuses, disconnected all connections under both side covers, under the tank and it is still on. I pulled the front fairing and disconneted every electrical connector there and still on. I pulled the lower right fairing and disconnected all connections there :crying:and the the test light is still on, Any ideas? Thanks
  6. Did you have to make a connection to Both coil #1 and #2 to get the correct RPM reading
  7. Got the royal star out Saturday and went to the harley shops open house to get a free hot dog. Figured I would go to the local Costco to get a tomato so I could make my wife a nice salad for dinner that night. Tried all the samples at Costco and forgot the tomato. The temp was about 40 degrees so I decided to stop at the local grocery store in town on my way home. It felt so good to be out, I decided to go to a store in Novi (about 15 miles). Got to Novi and it was so nice to be out riding, I decided to go out to a grocery store in Howell (about 25 miles). Bought the tomato in howell and took the back way home. About a 100 miles in all. Best tomato we ever had.
  8. Also, how does the timing advance work. I see posts of vacuum lines. Could this be something with the timing?
  9. I have a 97 royal star classic with 35000 miles on it. I have had it for 2 weeks and have put over 1000 miles on it. I upgraded from a v-star 650. I love the ride and have learned so much from the site. It appears to be missing or vibrating on a moderate throttle (I have been at 50mph in 3rd, 70 in 4th and still notice it). It is noticible when giving throttle from an idle while in neutral also) I have put two sets of plugs in, synced the carbs (to the best of my abilities), checked the resistance on the plug caps(all about 10k and have just ordered new ones based on info from this site as I am getting some ignition noise when listening to the radio on the head set). When I increase the throttle through mid range, it appears to be missing. I have ran a can of seafoam through it. I have adjusted the idle mixture screws. I removed the air cleaner cover and moved the slides back and let them go. The slides for cyl 1&2 return slowly, the slides for 3&4 come back much quicker. I have not pulled the the diaphagms to check for holes. At cruising speeds (high rpms) it seems to run fine. At an Idle. all cycinders are fireing and all plugs appear to be burning clean. Would the shimming of the slides help this? I was reading several posts that were discouraging. Comment about not doing anything to this model year and instead selling it to get a 2002 or newer. Is this the case for this bike? I am not looking for a dragster, just a comfortable dependable ride. I know I am rambeling. any helpful hints would be appreciated.
