VR Assistance

  1. I regret to say that I have removed myself from offering VR assistance. In order to provide assistance I have to post my phone numbers(s) for contact purpose. It's too bad that someone chooses to use the phone number information for something other than to request assistance. One rotten apple CAN spoil the whole bushel.
  2. I was not sure where to post this, but I thought I should report on my new gps. I took a couple of cross country trips with my TomTom. I could barely see it, and could never hear it. It quit working last fall, so for Christmas I got myself a Garmin Nuvi 295w. Its big advantage is a head phone jack. Which allows me to run it through the stereo system. Price about $90. I also got a mini sd cart ($12) and a handle bar mount from ebay ($14) head phone adaptor ($3). I loaded about 2000 songs. I went for a test drive and it worked as expected. Set the music playing and when it comes time for a turn it cuts out the music and blares the instructions out of the speakers. (instructions louder than the music, you will hear them). It has an orientation sensor, so you can set it vert or horz. ( hope to attach pics). It was there smart phone, and still has some of the smart phone features. It has a camera, (picture of what waits anyone foolish enough to enter my yard) web browser. after test drive: Pros. Can hear instructions. I could see it well, it mounts on a ball and socket joint, so if the sun blocks it out, just tilt it a little bit. Winter sun is not as bright a summer sun, but I could always see it well enough. Cons. Like any thing that does it all, it does not do anything as well. The biggest thing is, when it is playing music, it is VERY slow. Soon learned if you want to change address, first stop the music. It is not a great web interface, but I was able to check my email over the wi fy at my house. The music player is a little tough to get used to, but it did work. Several times it has locked up and I had to remove the battery to restart, since it does work I am assuming this is a software problem, hoping for an update. Camera see attached photo For the money spent, so far I am very satisfied. I hope this helps George
  3. When Tom bought his Blackberry, he thought about the 30-year business he ran with 1800 employees, all without a cell phone that plays music, takes videos, pictures and communicates with Facebook and Twitter. He signed up under duress for Twitter and Facebook, so his seven kids, their spouses, 13 grandkids and 2 great grand kids could communicate with him in the modern way. He figured he could handle something as simple as Twitter with only 140 characters of space. That was before one of his grandkids hooked him up for Tweeter, Tweetree, Twhirl, Twitterfon, Tweetie and Twittererific Tweetdeck, Twitpix and something that sends every message to his cell phone and every other program within the texting world. His phone was beeping every three minutes with the details of everything except the bowel movements of the entire next generation. He was not ready to live like this. He now keeps his cell phone in the garage in his golf bag. The kids bought him a GPS for his last birthday because they say he gets lost every now and then going over to the grocery store or library. He keeps that in a box under his tool bench with the Blue tooth [it's red] phone he is supposed to use when he drives. He wore it once and was standing in line at Barnes and Noble talking to his wife and everyone in the nearest 50 yards glaring at him. He had to take his hearing aid out to use it, and then got a little loud. The GPS looked pretty smart on his dash board, but the lady inside that gadget was the most annoying, rudest person he'd had run into in a long time. Every 10 minutes, she would sarcastically say, "Re-calc-u-lating." You would think that she could be nicer. It was like she could barely tolerate him. She would let go with a deep sigh and then tell him to make a U-turn at the next light. Then if he made a right turn instead......Well, it was not a good relationship. When he gets really lost now, he calls his wife and tell her the name of the cross streets and while she is starting to develop the same tone as Gypsy, the GPS lady, at least she loves him. To be perfectly frank, he is still trying to learn how to use the cordless phones in their house. They have had them for 4 years, but he still hasn't figured out how he can lose three phones all at once and have to run around digging under chair cushions and checking bathrooms and the dirty laundry baskets when the phone rings. The world is just getting too complex for him. They even mess him up every time he goes to the grocery store. You would think they could settle on something themselves but this sudden "Paper or Plastic?" every time he checks out just knocks him for a loop. He bought some of those cloth reusable bags to avoid looking confused, but can never remember to take them in with him. Now he tosses it back to them. When they ask him, "Paper or Plastic?" he just says, "Doesn't matter to me. I am bi-sacksual." Then it's their turn to stare at him with a blank look. He was recently asked if he tweets. He answered, No, but I do toot a lot." P.S. I know a few of you are not over 50. I sent it to you to allow you to forward it to those who are.
  4. I was getting ready to buy a SPOT II, and went to their homepage to check the annual subscription. That's when I saw the notice of the upcoming SPOT Connect. The SPOT Connect pairs with your [Android] smart phone to enable you to send SMS and short emails over SPOT's satellite system. On close inspection, it doesn't look that different than the SPOT II functionality. The difference is that the interface comes from your phone. It connects using Bluetooth; not sure how having this paired with my phone will work when my phone is paired to my helmet. It is available only for Android 2.0 or later; unfortunately for you Apple and Blackberry fanboys, they are targeting smart consumers. The SPOT Connect is available at the end of January. Pricing [at REI] seems to be the same as on the SPOT II. Not sure about data plans. Anyone hear any buzz on this? Dave http://findmespot.com/images/spot_connect/connect_prod.png

    cell phone from 1928?

    I'm betting its an iphone...but who knows... http://www.cnn.com/2010/TECH/web/10/28/charlie.chaplin.circus.time.travel/index.html [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8I3O_qa82RA]YouTube - 1928 Cell Phone?[/ame]
  6. I recently got a Casio Exilim. The Zumo 550 doesn't like it. It constantly gives the message "Cel Phone Disconnected" followed by "You can make calls now (or something like that)". My G'Zone never did that so I bet it's in the phone.
  7. I have a HTC sprint EVO phone , it has gps , radio , mp3 and a bunch more toys , my ? is anybody know if somebody makes a adapter to hook it up to our j&m headsets ? will a j&m mic work on a cell phone ? it would be cool to make a 5 pin to a cell phone jack , i know edsets makes one for the zumo and one for a cb . Thom
  8. I have a 1993 VR. I just installed a cigarette lighter for charging my cell phone. I tested the cigarette lighter with the lighter, no issues, in 20 seconds it was hot and popped out (as expected). I plugged in my cell phone car charger adapter and in a couple of seconds I heard a loud pop and smoke coming from my adapter. I hooked red (center wire) to positive terminal and black wire to negative terminal. What did I do wrong? Thank you.

  10. 1 week ago I got rid of ATT and Dish network and went to comcast (finally high speed). I wanted a new home phone number and had it listed with only my initials and not to give out my new number when the old one was called. The next day the tele-markerters started calling. Phone was ringing off the hook. I went on line to the National No Call list and signed up. Still getting calls. I know that tele-marketers are just tring to make a living so I try to be nice. Usally just say not interested and please add me to your no call list. Got to admit the last call a few minutes ago caught me at a bad time. Phone rang and when I answered the guy asked for Mrs. Sabin, I answered. "No more Mrs. Sabin, I shot her and burried her in the basement". Long pause and the guy laughs and says " I was calling about cemertary plots but I see you have it already taken care of". We had a good laugh and I asked him to put me on his no call list and we hung up. True story, just happened about 20 minutes ago while I was reading posts on VentureRider.org. But how long does the no-call thing take?
  11. I preordered the new Iphone 4 early on the 15th and Fed Ex delivered it today. I like it. It's much improved over the Iphone 3G that I had. It was a snap to switch over from my old phone. The new phone is much faster. The apps are much snappier and the 3G data transfer now approaches broadband speed. It seems that the old Iphone wasn't capable of processing the data at 3G speeds. The new phone seems to correct that. There are many new features and the phone seems easier to hold. Not as slippery as the original. I just love new toys... Dennis
  12. Just got a call about them finding a cell phone in the area of D-21 which is where we camped. If you lost one, call 828-686-3121 and it may be yours. RandyA
  13. Last week I discovered my Avon Venom rear tire was coming apart, so on the 5th I ordered a Elite 3 from South West Moto. So today I was talking on the phone with a friend that I'm waiting for my new tire to get here, when my phone started beeping with an incoming call. It was South West Moto. They told me my tire was supposed to be shipped to me from one of their warehouses close to me but somehow got shipped to their Tucson location by mistake. Was told how sorry they were for the mistake and would overnight the tire to me at their expense so I could ride by the weekend. Within 15 minutes I got an e-mail with a tracking number and told tire was on it way. Members have posted before how fast they shipped and now I can say how good their customer service is. Plus was the best price I could find. Thanks to the members who have posted about this fine company.
  14. We stopped in Sheridan Wy to do a little shopping and pick up some groceries and gas for the space shuttle. I was just coming up to the intersection to get back on the I-90 and a guy pulls out of gas station with a boat on a trailer and lucky for him it was me he cut off. Just as he pulled out I put my foot on the brakes and I see something fall from his vehicle. It was his wallet, full of cash, credit cards and ID. I stopped right on top of it and Mary went out and gathered up as much as she could without getting run over. She is sure she didn't get all the cash. By now the guy is booting it up the on ramp and way out ahead. No chance to catch him with the shuttle, even with the Ultra Power upgrade. So what should I do? By the time I got on the hwy. he was out of sight. I pulled over at the first opportunity and went thought the wallet looking for a phone number and all I found was a personal check with a phone number but the last two digits couldn't be read. There was a business card for a county parole officer (don't jump to conclusions) so I called the number but the women didn't work there any more. The guy I talked to did some digging and came up with a cell number. I tried it, no answer, but the recorded message was by the guy so I left a message with my cell number. Haven't heard anything yet but we're at Devils Tower tonight and there's no cell reception. If I don't hear anything tomorrow I guess I'll just pack it all in an envelope and ship it back to him. My dilemma is that I have no idea how much money might have blown away and I don't want him thinking I stoled it. We found one, hundred dollar bill but who knows how many there were? I was in the middle of the road holding up traffic and wasn't too worried about a few that got away.
  15. Any 1st Gens have a Voyager kit on their bike? I would like to talk to you about them. Pros and cons, used vs new, and what would be a good price for a used one? Yep, I have my eyes on a used one. It is just the standard model, so we will see. Thanks ( I can send pics with my phone if you would like.
  16. I have an HTC HERO sprint cell phone I am looking for a cable to hook to my laptop so I can get the internet on my laptop from my cell phone. Someone mentioned a patch cable where do I find this and do I need any software with it. Joe
  17. Which cell phone and service has the best GPS and gives the best/easiest system when requesting info directions ? Cb
  18. Since my sweetie is my full-time navigator (along with my GPS device), I often will give her the assignment to also be my on-board photographer when we are riding. In addition to either our video camera or still cameras, she will also sometimes have to look-up information on my GPS or cell phone while we are riding. This involves her handling some rather expensive devices which I would be pretty upset if she happened to accidentally drop one of them. Now, my cameras have wrist straps on them, so they are pretty safe. But, neither my Garmin GPS or my Motorola Droid have wrist straps. Has anyone here figured-out a way to attach some sort of simple, safety tether to a small portable, electronic device? I wouldn't be surprised if someone actually manufacturers them. I'm thinking of something similar to one of these: http://www.kabletek-flexweave.com/flexweave.htm I'm just not sure how I would attach something like this to a cell phone, GPS or an iPod. Any suggestions? I'm sure this isn't an original idea. Thanks guys! Be Safe! Pete.
  19. After the funeral Friday my Daughter went up to spend the Holiday with her nephew in the thumb of Michigan. I road the bike up to bring her back and for the 2 hour ride back she didn't shut up once. Did not hook up the intercom and she just rattled on and on and on. If I didn't answer her she just answered herself. When we hit rain I figured she would close her visor and couldn't talk, but no, left it open and just kept talking away. Man did I get a ear full of her future hopes and dreams. Even when we stopped to get gas she talked while I was pumping, followed me in to pay for it and never missed a beat. At times I just couldn't keep from laughing. I better have a good cell phone plan when I let her have her own phone.
  20. Sometimes only a picture can get our attention! Her last call was from a new cell phone... Do you see the motorcycle? http://us.mg201.mail.yahoo.com/ya/download?mid=1%5f127876%5fAJPHjkQAAIu1S%2bGY%2fwYk5xK8Kw4&pid=2&fid=Inbox&inline=1 Now do you see it? http://us.mg201.mail.yahoo.com/ya/download?mid=1%5f127876%5fAJPHjkQAAIu1S%2bGY%2fwYk5xK8Kw4&pid=3&fid=Inbox&inline=1 http://us.mg201.mail.yahoo.com/ya/download?mid=1%5f127876%5fAJPHjkQAAIu1S%2bGY%2fwYk5xK8Kw4&pid=4&fid=Inbox&inline=1 http://us.mg201.mail.yahoo.com/ya/download?mid=1%5f127876%5fAJPHjkQAAIu1S%2bGY%2fwYk5xK8Kw4&pid=5&fid=Inbox&inline=1 The Honda crotch rocket rider was traveling at approximately 85 mph. The VW driver was talking on a cell phone when she pulled out from a side street, apparently not seeing the motorcycle. The riders reaction time was not sufficient enough to avoid this accident. The car had two passengers and the bike rider was found INSIDE the car with them. The Volkswagen actually flipped over from the force of impact and landed 20 feet from where the collision took place. All three involved (two in the car and the bike rider) were killed instantly. This graphic demonstration was placed at the Motorcycle Fair by the Police and Road Safety Department.. Pass this on to car drivers or soon to be new drivers, or new motorcycle owners AND ESPECIALLY EVERYONE YOU KNOW WHO HAS A CELL PHONE!!!!! A picture is worth a thousand words. Save a life… Stop talking on Cell phones and Texting while trying to drive. The life you save may be your own..... or mine...
  21. I'm as dumb as a brick when it comes to anything bluetooth. Here's what I'm thinking about doing, and wanted to ask for input on whether it's even possible. I just picked up a Garmin Streetpilot c550 with bluetooth capabilities. It also has the MP3 player. What I wonder is... can I get the Garmin, and a helmet bluetooth head set, and my bluetooth cell phone to interphase with each other? The Garmin addresses the ability to link to the cell phone, but can the helmet set send and receive audio and be the primary controll???????? Anyone ever done this type of set up? I like the Garmin as it has the same sunlight screen as the Zumo550. It is smaller but easier to find a place on a crowded 1stGen dash. Any thoughts would be appreciated....
  22. My wife had to take a neighbor to see her Dr. today and she left me home alone with the credit card. MISTAKE !! I've been contemplating for several weeks and today I finally did it while she was gone. I bought the Garmin 1490T with the life time update card and a second lifetime card for my Zumo 550 on the bike. Lotta money - (about $500 ) but it's worth it just for the blue tooth. Last week I had to make a near 2000 mile trip alone and the phone never stopped. It always makes me nervous to answer the phone while driving but it's even worse when you have to call someone that's NOT in your phone book. Maybe I'm just getting too old for that OR maybe I'm finally getting a LITTLE smarter Now if I can stay outta site for a while - - - -
  23. Of all the members who call me.... You're the only one that calls at the wrong time When I eating , when I have guest at the house So I'll try and get ahold of you instead By the way how come you are not answering the phone
  24. I have just installed the Buddy Rich cable and before I put the faring back together I have a question. The MP3 player works and sounds just great through my helmet headphones with the volune on the bike audio system set fairly low arounf 6 or so but when I answer a phone call I had to turn the volume up all the way to 30 in order to hear the call. I have the volume set to 100% on the Garmin and the volume on my Motorolla razor phone up al the way. Any one have any ideas why I cant hear the phone call without turning the volume up all the way on the bike?
  25. I just purchased a Zumo660 and a Samsung U450 cell phone. I know of a person from the Zumo forums that has the same phone and has no problems using it with the Zumo. I am able to pair them and they talk to each other and both list each other but I am getting a message on the phone "connected as data mode M" and then the Zumo disconnects. I've tried phone to the Zumo and the Zumo to the phone and get the same result! I contacted Garmin and they tell me because the phone is not on their list they can't offer me any help. Any Ideas ????? Thanks Keith
