  1. The shifter lost the lock down screw and slid off the splines on my 84 Venture. I pushed it back on and got another nut. I put it in neutral and adjusted the shift rod until the light came on. When I tried riding it, I would have to stomp it hard to go into first. When I parked, the neutral light would not come on again. I would see it blink as I passed through to second. I tried the adjust twice more and each time, it would lose the light after shifting through the gears and first was still tricky. The Yamaha Service manual is no help. Any ideas OH GURUS of the TRIPPLE TUNNG FORKS?
  2. I have a couple of questions: #1: in the middle of the battery there is a wire coming out that has a resistor or something - I removed it when I took the battery out to charge. What might it be? Second: I need to bleed the clutch but I can't get the bleeder broke loose - any help here? Third: When I bought the bike - we jumped the bike and got it started. I charged it up for a few hours - and when I tried to start it I had a warning light and it just hummed. I had the kickstand down and in neutral. Perhaps the battery needs replaced - I put my volt meter on it and it was reading less then 7 volts - so I'm charging it overnight to see if I can salvage it. Thanks
  3. i have checked what has been suggested and what i can see all is where it is supposed to be and doing what it should. the fluid is a medium colored carmel color and is full. not having worked on a bike in awhile, i could be missing something. on a stand, if i go from neutral through the gears (engine running) the tranny makes quite a bit of noise as i progress up to 4th. it made enough noise, i went back to neutral and turned it off. i changed the engine oil about 60 miles ago just after a rear tire change, which is good. I have been having shifting problems since. on a side note while changeing the engine oil and i don't remember why i was going to do this, but i loosened a cover to see what was behind it. the cover is on the left side, back one. i got the bolts loose, but the cover did not want to come off. i got distracted and wound up finishing the oil change. then i cranked the bike. while idling in neutral, i remembered that cover. it was barely oozing oil. i tightened up the bolts and cleaned the 2 drops of oil. I don't know what is behind that cover, but that may be my souce of trouble. any suggestions on adjustments? after i post this, i am gonna go to the stealer for clutch fluid in case changing the fluid is suggested. the previous owner used yama fluid for everything, so i know what to get. I will check this thread afterwhile.
  4. Is there away to by pass the neutarl switch. Drove the bike today only went 1 mile. I shut it off then it would not start. The neutral light stays on no matter what gear. After trying to shift it to find neutral the light went dim when pulling the clutch in. Then after a few trys it started. Also when i put up the kick stand up the n. light went off. Im guessing its the switch. The bike started everyday this winter with no problem.
  5. double whammy here! First, my '83 is not tracking straight when I let go of the handlebars. I recall from my commuting days that I used to sit on the back seat of the Virago with the thumb lock on and my hands in my pockets and ride for miles going down I20. My VR ('83) won't do that, she falls away to the left. What would cause this? Warped frame, tire out of balance, left side of my rear too big??? And after that of course, how do you fix it and is it worth the effort? Second and the main reason I bring this up, now that I have a sidecar attached, I am trying to attain neutral steering by adjusting the toe in. In theory I should be able to adjust sidecar toe-in to achieve the rig to be steering neutral, but that might come at the price of increased tire wear. Any suggestions or opinions? Thanks!
  6. Attached are redrawn schematics of the starting circuits for the 1st Gen's. I thought these might help people that have cranking & starting issues. There is a narrative above each circuit detailing operation. This text assumes a charged battery and intact fuses. There are three views of each circuit. Left side shows circuit in normal condition, key off, side stand down, transmission in neutral. Center view shows circuit with key on, transmission in neutral. clutch and side stand switches not shown as they are irrelevant in this configuration. All switches and relays shown in position to energize starting motor. RIght view shows key on, transmission in gear, side stand up and cluth pulled in. Neutral switch not shown as it is irrelevant in this configuration. All switches and relays shown in position to energize starting motor. Also, the side stand relay and Emergency stop sensor are shown. Neither of these affect the cranking circuit but will shut down the Ignitor unit. Actually, the bike will start and run with either of these pulled out. 84-85 one is almost identical to 86-93 version. Only difference is positive wire at starting solenoid coil. 37977.pdf Gary
  7. Hi Guys, I'm the new owner of an 85 venture. There is a weird thing going on with the neutral light. When you first start the bike it works as advertised. After you ride for a while and the bike gets hot the light will no longer work. Not only that but the bike no longer knows when it's in neutral. What I mean is even if the bike is in neutral and you put side stand down the bike will shut down as if it was in gear. If you let the bike cool down for a couple of hours and start it up the light works fine again and side stand will not shut off the bike if put down when in neutral. Any ideas??
  8. I have an '08 with about 6800 miles on it. My neutral light stays illuminated all the time...when in "neutral" it is at it's brightest, as I shift up it gets less bright but still keeps some illumination. As I shift down it gets brighter and hits it's max again when I actually put it in neutral. Has anyone else had this problem or can tell me what the problem is?? Thanks...
  9. My apologies up front if this is an incorrect post....My First. I have a 1983 Venture Royale 1200 that just now started this prob. the neutral light comes on whenever you even slightly pull in the lever - in every gear. It stays on when the lever is pulled and during shifting. the only thing I have noticed is that finding neutral seems to be harder (more touchy) than before. Any ideas? Thanks in advance Roger
  10. Gear position Indicator upgradefor standard Ventures (Non-Royales) I have installed a gear position indicating system on my 1983 Venture. This is the stock model without the dash readout from the factory. This is the second Venture I have owned. The first one was a 1984 Royale. Two of the things I really miss from that bike were the gear indicator and the cruise control. The cruise control is coming later. I have all of the stock parts now needed to install it. I obtained a Neutral Switch Assembly from a 1984 Venture Royal through an Ebay auction for under $10.00. This assembly will exchange with the stock neutral switch assembly from a standard Venture. The neutral switch assembly is located between the back end of the stator cover and the front of the middle drive. It sets back in about four inches and is difficult to see, but is accessible. Removal of the middle drive cover is needed to access. To indicate what gear the bike is in I mounted three LED lights in the gauge cluster above the volt gauge. The left light is lit it indicates 1st gear. The left light and the center lights lit indicate 2nd gear. The center light lit indicates 3rd gear. The center light and right lights lit indicate 4th gear. The left light lit indicates 5th gear. The neutral light works as normal. In neutral none of the LED’s are lit. I could also use five LED’s, using one for each gear, but I like the 3 light system as it is easy to see and once familiar with the pattern, it is very easy to determine what gear I am in with a quick glance down at the gauges. I initially used a red, green and amber LED’s but the green and amber had poor visibility in the daytime. I replaced with all red ones. I also painted the part of the LED’s that are inside of the cluster with black paint to keep the light from the instrument cluster from bleeding through the LED’s translucent housing. I used four diodes and three LED’s from radio shack for the light logic circuit. Four IN4004 rectifier diodes. Price $.99 for two Three Red LED assemblies. Price $1.99 each The new Neutral Switch Assembly has a six pin plug on the end that sets in the same area that the stator and rectifier plugs are near the fuel pump. I had two spare diode assemblies that I have obtained in the past and used the plug from one of these to mate up with the plug on the Neutral Switch cable. I had to take one extra wire connector from the second diode assy. As the diode assembly plug only used five wires. You do not need to use this connector if you do not want to though. I retained this plug as I will be replacing the wiring harness when I install the cruise control. I put the diodes in the circuit near the plug connections on the end of the neutral switch assy. I then ran three 18 gauge wires up to the instrument cluster. I used a trailer four conductor plug I had to make a connection at the instrument panel. I have attached a PDF file with pictures and a wiring schematic to install this.
  11. Ok, I think there may be something wrong with my shifter. It does not want to change gears when at a stop. It will only shift when moving and that is only sometimes. I do not believe it is the cluch, it appears to be working fine. When I am in neutral and try to shift to 1st, the shifter goes all of the way down but does engage anything:puzzled:. If I shift up to second, sometimes it will go, but not always. It almost feels like the shifter is not connected to something. It will let you push and pull it as far as you want. Sometimes it will not let you back into Neutral once you got into second or above. Does anybody know where I should start to look? I was unable to find anything in the book, though I was able to find a parts break down of it. Please help, this is the last thing keeping me off of the road.... Thank you, Clay P.S. rocking the bike does not help.
  12. Help?! Maybe some of you technical folks could offer some suggestions?? A friend of mine has a brand new (2008) VSTAR 1100 Classic - only 5,100 miles - purchased 3 months ago. She has been experiencing several mechanical problems - all of which (in my opinion) the dealer may be blowing incorrect information to her - and/or just not knowledgeable on this type of motorcycle. Thought I would ask if any of these mechanical issues sounded familiar - or may have thoughts on what to specifically say to try and get these issues resolved (other than blowing off the dealer). I did a copy and paste of her e-mail: These things don’t happen all of the time which makes it hard to diagnose and then fix, but they happen often enough to be frustrating, irritating and annoying. The gear(s) issue is what worries her the most because we like to ride twisty mountain roads. popping sound from exhaust – this happens on acceleration and/or deceleration - level and hilly (high elevation) areas. The dealer told her it was the “air injection system”. It wasn’t “blocked off” before which allowed too much air to come through the exhaust causing the back-firing and popping noises. it’s not shifting into neutral on a “regular” basis. First gear and neutral having problems. The bike originally had issues with getting into neutral. The service tech lowered the shifting lever; it work(s)(ed) a lot better. BUT, it’s still not 100% all of the time. I can’t always get the bike into first gear; it wants to stay in neutral or like Sunday, going around a corner, went into neutral. I am being told that this problem is common with this bike – and tends to go away on / after 7,000-8,000 miles on the bike. Hard to start: when they blocked the air injection [section or whatever it’s called], this may “fix” that problem. Didn’t matter whether it was cooler temps or warmer, I was having problems. Again, it doesn’t happen all the time. Thanks, anyone - for any ideas and/or suggestions which I may pass on to her.
  13. I mostly start engine in neutral but when I start it in first gear with clutch in the bike will creep forward while starter is engaged and stop when it starts.Do I need to fix something or just make sure all starting is done in neutral. thanks Curtis
  14. Auxiliary plug under the seat has a cap that removes and it's only purpose I can see is to waterproof the plug. Where can you get the other end to put the two (hot and neutral) wires from my GPS? The plug is already switched to "On or Acc" which is what I want. Thanks!
  15. Figured I'd fess up. Pullled into a gas station on the way home from Don's yesterday. I'm in the habit of leaving the bike on the sidestand while Sam gets on and off the bike. Gassed up, went to start it before she got on, couldn't get it into neutral so I picked it off and put the stand up to start it and get it into neutral, brain farted and forgot to put the stand down, started leaning it and over she went. Fought like heck with it but couldnt stop it, she eventually stopped up against the pump. Only damage I see is the headlight visors are shot and my stupid ego. Does the 'Dropped it' club pay dues??
  16. I went for the first ride this year this afternoon. The bike started fine and ran great. When I got home I shut off the bike to open the garage door, when I tried to restart the bike, I could not get it to turn over. The battery is fully charged and all of the lights worked but I did not hear the fuel pump run. I also could not get the neutral indicator light to illuminate. I shifted into first and back into neutral (no light) tried second back into neutral (no light). I pulled the clutch in with the side stand down - no luck. I put up the side stand - no luck. Side stand up, clutch in - no luck. The bike was in neutral, the green light was not on. I don't use the kill switch but checked it by flipping it off then on several times - no luck. I pushed the bike into the garage and kept tinkering with it. I checked all fuses and they were fine. After breaking out the manual, the bike had cooled down. When I turned the key back on to try to figure out what the problem is, low and behold the neutral light was on and the bike fired right up. Last season the neutral indicator light was acting up when the bike was hot and did not always come on but it always started. This has me stumped! :confused07: Could the gear switch cause this starting problem? Can it be adjusted so the neutral light comes on when I am in neutral?
  17. This was addressed in the 1st gen folder, but decided to put it here since it is happening with my 07. Tonight after I got home from work, I noticed a slight "rumble" noise when I pulled in the garage when I put it in neutral and let the clutch lever out. Did not sound like throwout bearings. Only hear it when in neutral without the clutch engaged. No slipping, shifts normally, but it is just loud enought that the wife even heard it. If I take it to the stealer, are they going to tell me to pay because clutch is a wear item and not covered? Bike is only 2 years old with 21,000 miles.
  18. I did a search for noise with transmission in neutral and found a couple of concepts about the noise source but just not sure what I'm looking at labor wise. Wondering what the most likely source of noise is. Working on a 1987 XVZ13DTC with 60000 miles. The bike is running great right now but I can hear a rumble that goes away in neutral with the clutch pulled in. When the clutch is let out in neutral the rumble comes back . It' not loud but it is there. Using a stethoscope I can hear the rumbling loudest near the oil fill plug. When the clutch is pulled in the noise is gone completely and everything is smooth. It sounds like a bearing rumble. Clutch works great no binding, grabbing slipping or other nonsense. Shifts great and clutch lever engages at the bottom almost as if the clutch is a newer one. (The bike is new to me) I am wondering what the most likely culprit is and how critical you guys think this might be and how soon it should be fixed. Biggest concern is that it is the ball bearing behind the clutch on the output of the transmission.(Part #8 in the transmission picture.) I saw the pictorial tech post here of a member who removed his engine to split the cases and replace the 30.00 bearing because the cage folded on the bearing behind the clutch basket and disintegrated leaving all the balls bunched up inside the two races. Or could it more likely be the clutch bearing itself? (#17 in the picture of the clutch assembly)
  19. I got my trike back 2-28, late afternoon. On the way home I noticed that the neutral light does not come on when in neutral. Also the OD light does not come on when in 5th gear. The curise control does not stay on. I went back to the dealer on 3-3 at 0900, the time that they open, and their first day to open after the weekend. They told me that they were too busy to do anything now and to call and make an apt. (After I paid just short of $2K to get it fixed) I made a call to a friend of mine and was told that the switch, or connection for the neutral light and maybe the OD light is behind the cover on the left side of the bike at the foot shifter. Before I get started on this task I wanted to ask you guys who might have had some type of problem like this for your help. Any ideas? or pictures? so I'll have some idea of what I'm doing. I'm all done with this dealer and begining to compose a letter to Yamaha. Ken:fingers-crossed-emo
  20. Just bought an 84, not the Royale version (standard?) It needs lots of work. Been sitting for a couple years, every body piece on it is cracked some how, and the carb slides are stuck, just from my first looking over it. Good news is that I can jump the solenoid and it cranks over. I am sure I will have many questions, but my first one is this: When in neutral, the computerized display, the LCD part only, goes blank. In gear it displays properly. While I suspect t has something to do with the neutral start switch, is there a common place that I might check first as to avoid completely tearing apart the wiring harness? Also, is there a good place to find parts for this bike? Parts N more doesn't list it, and most other places I have found charge near dealer prices, or don't list it. Thanks
  21. Ok guys got tank cleaned out of my 84 with seafoam and i was able to get the 2 left bowls to drain added fresh gas and got no fire. I checked sparkplugs to see if i had fire and nope not there either. Starter turns over fine no dragging. I want to note that i have no display in neutral all the bells and whistles work in 1st and 2nd but nothing in neutral I am wondering if this may be my problem. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Guys, David:Avatars_Gee_George:
  22. What should I check if the gear indicator on my 84 isn't working properly? Neutral light works when in neutral, Says 5th. when in 5ith., Says 4th. when in 1st., neutral, 2nd., 3rd., and 4th. I popped out the sending unit and it appeared to look alright. I can live with it not working properly. It just annoys me. If it's gonna be there it should work properly I figure.
  23. Today When I Went To Start My Scoot, Turn Key On And Heard A Buzzing Sound Coming Down Around The Battery. After Searching For The Sound Found It To Be From The Starter Circuit Cut-off Relay. Locate Under The Right Hand Side Panel (little Blue Relay With Four Wires Into It). Went To My Dealer And He Pulled One Off Of A 08 Model (same Number On Part). When I Replaced The Relay The Buzzing Was Still There. This Relay Is Wired To The Kickstand Switch , Clutch Switch And Neutral Switch. Does Anyone Have A Idea On Where To Look Now. Cannot Find The Other Connectors To Disconnect The Three Switches One At A Time To See If I Can Isolate The Problem Causing The Buzzing Sound. Thanx For Your Info Horse
  24. Hey everyone I have a question. I pulled the bike out yesterday (87 Venture) as I hadnt had it out in 2 weeks. I washed it and then went for a little scoot. When I rolled it out of the garage I had a little trouble hitting neutral to fire it up. It was stiff and hard and and just kept going from first to second without hitting neutral. Finally found neutral and down the road I go. The gears were stiff and hard to shift, almost like the clutch wasnt in all the way. Had a problem shifting from 2nd to 3rd and then to 4th, almost had to do it a few times to get into the other gears. Downshifting was the same thing had to shift pretty hard and a few times to get it to want to downshift. The bike ran fine other than that and when it was out last 2 weeks ago it was perfect, and I did nothing to it other than wash it before I went for a ride yesterday. It was dark when I got home so I didnt even look at it I just pulled it in the garage and and parked it (the penguin game was on). I figured I would look at it today. Has anyone had this problem or does anyone know where I should look first? Thanks, Paul
  25. Hi. Newbie here. I have a '91 Venture with approx 140k on it. Runs great and shifts solid and smooth with one problem....it doesn't want to go into neutral. Often I have to put it in first and then slip the clutch to get it in neutral. It generally goes in if I can get it in before stopping. Anyone had this problem before and is there anything I can do without a tranny rebuild? thx indy
