  1. Hey all, I've been in the market for a bit for either a Venture or Goldwing. Someone in my hometown has an 1983 Venture Royale with 19,000 miles on it and is asking 1,800 bucks. He says it starts and runs fine and is at his auto dealership so he is going to drive it back to his house tomorrow to sell (about 40 miles). Sounds like an honest guy overall and he said he has owned it for only two months and intended on keeping it (just got the plates for it last week) but he is hard up for cash and has to come up with 10 grand for something to do with his business partner. He said he's had at least 25 emails on the thing. He said he just bought it 2 months ago for 2,500. Could someone tell me if this is a good deal and also could it be a bad idea to buy this? Any recommendations? I'm 5'7 and currently own a vstar 650...just looking for something me and the wife could go on longer trips and be more comfortable. Thank you
  2. Something I've always wondered about. First a little about my riding habits. I have a 99 RSV that I have owned since 2000. I ride on average 13-15K miles per year. Around 90% hiway miles and about 50% 2up. I don't race my bike, but I don't baby her either, I don't mind bumping the rev limiter once in a while, but don't do it every day. Now for my question. Why is it that my spark plugs only last around 10K miles at the most? The bike will run fine at lower to midrange RPMs, but at higher RPMs it feels like a miss or fuel starvation. Change plugs and all is good again. I run the recomended NGK DPRE8-9. I've tried equivalent Bosch but there's no difference. When I change the plugs, they are a nice grey/tan color with no signs of eroding, still gaped to spec (hurts my soul to throw them away). Look as good as new. Why can I get 90-100K on my plugs in the car, and less than 10K on the bike?
  3. After 1500 miles on my new to me 99 Interstate, I have to say I love this bike. I thought the foot position would be a problem, but it has been surprising comfortable. It does have a mustang seat, great padding, but very little wiggle room, so I will be looking for a ultimate soon. The power on the bike is great, gas mileage was about 32, 29 when flying, but the power of the engine is awesome, great torque, no vibes, and stable at any speed! Not that I would have sped by any means... This bike is just short of perfect for me. New seat, highway pegs, and electric cruise control will just about finish it off. It has all the chrome save for the trunk rack, so that will be next along with a trailer hitch and trailer. It does need a carb sync, tires are new, and the bike had 8500 miles when I picked her up. She will also need new speakers in the near future. All in all, I would rate it a 8.5 out of 10. Thanks again Squid for the assistance in getting it.
  4. Hello Everyone: We are back home safe as of 9:00 last night. It was so nice meeting many of you in person. Personally we logged a little of 1500 total miles. A new record for us. We took a 300 mile detour to the Saratoga WY. to see out Daughter and Son in law. We found a ladies zippered wallet along the highway about 50 miles south of our home. (Likely would not have seen it in a car) It looked like a chuck of black rubber. I turned around to take a second look. I made a few calls and aquired a cell phone number for the owner before they even noticed it missing. They were on their way to Yellowstone and were passing threw Scottsbluff. They were very thankful for a couple of "Bikers"!!! I am sure we will now plan our vacations around VR.org events in the future. Thanks Everyone!!!!!
  5. I just replaced the front E3 on my RSV after 21,600 miles. This is not near as many miles as I get from a Venom front tire, which seems a bit odd when you consider that I get about 3,000 miles MORE from an E3 rear tire than I do from a Venom rear. I have never been as satisfied with the Dunlop E3s as I am with Avon Venoms; I think the E3s are better than most other tires out there, but not quite up to the performance of the Venoms. I have a relatively new E3 on the rear (just 7,000 miles on it), and I put an Avon Venom on the front to see how that combination works. While changing the tires, I noticed that the Avon in stock size is considerably shorter than the E3 (smaller diameter), even when comparing a new Venom to a worn out E3. In addition, the Venom has a more rounded profile while the actual width of the tire from tread edge to edge is identical. I suspect the profile and smaller diameter contribute a lot to why the Venoms handle better for me. This new combo of the Venom front and E3 rear felt great today when I put about 50 miles on it to check out the new tire, but that is pretty early to tell. Gotta head back out to Phoenix this week, so after that 3,000 mile round trip I'll be able to give you a much better report on them. Goose

    I'm baaaack

I have been out of circulation for some time now. bike is running fine, but since I am on the road every week with this new job when I get home I am just plum tired and I doubt the bike has run 100 miles this year yet. It runs - I can't! so at least I can get back on the forum and catch up with all the craziness running around. Stay cool and ride safe.
  7. Hi folks, we just got back from another road trip and on the second day out, found ourselves in one of those cliff hanger rides on the back roads, where your GPS says there is a gas station, but it's no longer there and the 'next' one is erhm beyond your range.. Tempting fate we continued on with few options on this long stretch of back roads.. By the time we got to a gas station, we were on fumes.. The F counter showed 23.7 Miles, and we pumped in 4.8 Gallons of fuel into the empty tanks.. that means we had what, .2 gallons left sloshing around? I had always been curious to know just how far I could go on reserve, and I just found out.. At least now I know.. To be honest, it actually gave me more confidence to ride the tank lower than I normally would... What if we had run out of fuel? Well the emergency plan was that since my bike burns slightly more fuel than my buddy, we would have pulled the hose off at the petcock and drained what ever I had left into an empty drink container and put that fuel into my buddy's bike and see how far he could go on it.. prolly a few more miles further and closer to a gas station etc.. and he would come back with some fuel to get me there as well.. (contingency plans abound....) What's the lowest you got your tank down to? T
  8. I have a friend "Chuck" that just started a charity ride to raise money for a few charities. They are going to hit 22 states in 23 day's covering about 9000 miles. If you go to the facebook page and click the like button they will get $2.00 for each like they get. If you care to, please take a look and maybe like their page. Thanks
  9. Just got back from a cross-country trip of just under 5000 miles. Salt Lake City to Kansas City, to Columbus,OH, then down to Raleigh area. Met up with my nephew and went over and did about 1000 miles in and around the Dragon including Tennessee, northern Georgia and North Carolina. The Dragon was awesome, ran it 4 times. Ended up having to replace my back tire while there after only 10,000 miles, unfortunately the only tire they had was a Pirelli. Longest day was 906 miles with 105 degree temps across Wyoming & Kansas. Can't say enough about how beautiful the Appalachian Mountains were, totally different than the Rockies were I live.
  10. Well after 4 major surgeries and 5 years since Charlene has been on the back of a motorcycle to take a ride, she finally did it today. She decided to take a short ride to see how well she could tolerate the ride and she did well, we did about 30 miles on the V Star and she got a little numbbutt, but wasnt to bad, so she may do some riding at Vogel.
  11. my son and i are trying to come up with a covered bridge ride something between 2 and 3 hundred miles , we are in central ohio, any sugestions thanks Lee
  12. well, i have had my stratoliner a week and just turned over 700 miles. i changed oil in it saturday. a minor 3 hour job. it is a ***** to change oil on these big twins. i will make some special tools and cut the time in half. so far this bike has passed the ultimate bike test. the power is awesome. the handling is the best. i think it will out run and out handle my wing. it weighs 100 lbs. less. low speed handling on parking lots is far better than any bike i have ever owned or rode. it feels 1/3 as heavy as it is. it has a very low center of gravity. i had a vibration around 65 mph, but that is disappearing with the break in miles. the engine is so massive it will pull smoothly down to 1700 rpm. i just found out parick racing has a big bore kit for the strat along with a few other go fast goodies. think i will pass on that. ive got to stay in my limits and leave that stuff to the kids.
  13. Ok guys and gals thanks for the information on the intercom system, the problem was the headsets were not wired for Venture. While out riding today found a 1986 Venture Royale with everything but the kitchen sink. The bike has only 26000 miles on it has been sitting for about two years. Owner is asking $1100 is this a deal or what, I have a 1983 that I have to use for parts:mytruck1:
  14. just curious how many miles some of you have gone with no valve adjust... my 2005 with 35,000 miles is running better than ever and really hate to tear into it if i don't need to. i had an 2006 suzuki c50T and had valves adjusted twice and never really ran the same but cost $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ I'm a believer in don't fix it if it aint broke.
  15. 74k on my ’06 RSV and running great, but time was long past due for the valve adjustment. I have done all maintenance work in the past but the valve adjustment with shims and special tools seemed a little much for me, and wow, did I guess that right. After reading a post a week or so ago and seeing Muffinman’s comments I decided to give him a call and make an appointment to take my RSV to his place in NC. He was great, ordered new plugs, gasket set, fuel filter and he had the shims we were likely to need. He said something about color tuning and I said ‘what’s that” I balance the carbs my self. He said we should do it. What a difference. Here is the story, my RSV for the first 50K or so always went to reserve tank at 200 miles, like clock work, almost never varied more than a mile or two, last 10K or so it was looking for the reserve tank around 175 miles. Fuel mileage, was always 42-44mpg for the first 50K the started dropping to 38-42 lately. Well we did the valves, one intake tight by .001 and two exhaust open by .004, not bad enough to cause any damage yet, nor would I think any effect on mileage. The carb balance was off a little but not too bad, but the color tuning really made a change. Here is what we have now, noticeably more power in 2nd,3rd &4th and get this, mileage very, very carefully checked and getting 46.8 mpg, ½ of the mileage check was with two up and the other ½ solo. Now the bike was looking to go to reserve an 214 miles instead of 200 miles as when new, 175 miles lately. We spent a solid 6 hours, and we both worked, I don’t believe any one could do the job in less than 8 hr, Muffinman did a fabulous job and although a lot work I had a good time working with him, and I would say that unless your really good it’s not a job to mess with by your self, there are some parts that I doubt one would ever figure out with help. Great job, thanks Jeff
  16. About a month ago I was on my way home from work. With about 25 miles to go my fuel light came on. The gage still showed 3 bars. Well 10 mile later she runs out. I have to stop, lean the bike over, turn on the key till the pump stops. Drive for a few miles and do it again. I stopped 3 time before I made it to a gas station. I filled her up as far as I could and it only took 4.6 gallons. The same thing happend last night and when I made it to the gas station I could only get 4.5 gallons in and that gage still had two bars. Has anyone else had this problem. Where is the other 1.5 gallons?
  17. Just got back from a bike trip to Branson Mo and Illinois with my lovely wife. We were pulling a trailer with luggage and “essentials.” Trip spanned two weeks. Got lots of “thumbs up” from people in cars…guess there is something about a cycle on the open road! We had to opportunity to attend an informal reunion with some old Air Force friends we were stationed with in Germany, see some of the sights, and do some riding…then on to Illinois to visit my family and some of my high school friends. On the way back we stopped in West Memphis, Arkansas to visit an old AF buddy I hadn’t seen since 1973. Then another stop in Fort Worth to see one more AF friend I hadn’t seen in about five years. All in all it was a great trip! The trip up through Dallas was 104 degrees…with the traffic, it was really nasty! We ran into rain for about 100 miles from Springfield Mo to the east…then it cleared up. Other than that, the weather was not bad. I had busted my butt to get an American flag the day before we left (mine had started to tatter from the previous day’s ride)…borrowed one from one of our members (thanks, Tom)…somewhere in Arkansas it went airborne! Bummer!!! Got sick three days before getting home…made for a couple of extremely long days! Observations: · If you can physically only do about 400 miles a day (we are senior citizens), a motorcycle is not really that economical o What you save in gas, you more than make up for in motels · Sheepskin cover for the seat was TRULY worth the price! · Will likely take the cage on trips of a 1000 miles or more in the future…when you are the only driver…you are the only driver! It’s like the Cubs pitching staff…there ain’t no relief! · That being said…the ride was great! Stats for the trip are as follows: Total miles 2597.8 Gas averaged $3.449gal Avg mpg 36.3 Total gas cost $245.71
  18. just wondering what the most miles you've ever seen on a V4. I know they've been around for a while. i've seen several wings over 250k. I purchased My 01 rsv back in march with 40K on it and I plan on keeping this bike for years to come.
  19. Hello everyone, I come in need of some help. I recently purchased (3 months ago) a 99 RSV with 2k miles. She was mostly stored, when i brought her home i did a complete oils, plugs, and fluid flush. She runs great, but now at almost 5k miles its now making an interesting noise / rattle when you let off the throttle. Listen to the file title rattle.mp3. It makes the noise when the engine is warm, not so much when it's cold. Could it need a valve adjustment? The other audio file is what she sounds like when cold. Not sure if its the right noise or not, but that's the way she sounds. Any help would be appreciated.
  20. Why should we pay $$ for Iron Butt , We can give recognition on this site, we should have our own ..
  21. Hey All, went on a couple rides last weekend, put on about 550 miles on the Heritage. On a Group Ride yesturday of 300 miles we stopped at a DQ. One of riders asked Charlene and I how we liked the Heritage: Charlene said, No Room to move around, so tight I won't go anywhere. I said, "To be Honest, it is no Yamaha Venture". I could ride all day on the RSV, but after a 100 miles I am sore on the Heritage. Even put a signature series seat on the Heritage, but no help. With my back problems the weight of the Heritage is all I can handle, especially two up. Now don't get me wrong the Heritage has a lot of nice features, and the 105 year edition is a beautiful bike. But, I have always said the RSV is the best bike I have ever owned! Guess it is, what it is, but Sadly miss my "Sweet Thing" RSV. Later-
  22. I know that it has been discussed a lot and I have been searching reading through past post to see what I can find as well. My bike(97 Royal Star Tour Classic with 35K miles) has the Barons Big Air Kit installed: http://www.baronscustom.com/catalog/display/254/ ,....along with Barons Nasty Boys Exhaust. It runs Strong, Sounds great, but I only get about 32-34 MPG with it,..No matter how I drive it. This seems very low compared to what I have been reading in past post's. I have new plugs, run synthetic oil, have had the carbs synced at an idle (they needed it), but still have no improvements. Would the bigger jets in the Barons Kit make for the poor fuel economy? I would consider different jets if it would bring me closer to the 40 MPG mark. I called Barons today and they were no help at all,.. Any input would be appreciated,. Its just a bummer to have to fuel up every 125 miles when the others that we ride with can go 200 miles on a tank with their v-twins.
  23. I took off on my RSTD to the Smoky Mountains for a week of riding. This was the first extended (multi day) trip for the RSTD. I quickly discovered a few things I need to upgrade/change on the bike, such as: Seat - my seat is too small (or my butt is too big). My seat is not long enough front to back. It became VERY uncomfortable after 250+ miles but after 600+ miles in a single day. I began to wonder if I would ever be able to sit again. At 600+ miles even the seat beads were non-effective. Thus far my search for a larger (longer) seat has been unproductive. I can find wider seats but not longer ones. Any suggestion would be appreciated. Lighting - I need more lighting on the rear of the bike!! In the mountains with early morning fog (thick as pea soup), on a couple of occasions the folks behind me could not see me until they were just feet away. I'm thinking a set of Hyperlites may adequately address this issue. Rider awareness - When riding the "Dragon" double yellow lines and curvers don't matter to some, so be prepared to be passed on the left and RIGHT by other bikers. Obviously the group I was with were not sport bike riders but we were not poking along either. Some guy blows by us passing on the left and right. Glad he was fast because if I could have got my hands on him, well I'd be in the pokey writing this. Preparation - In six days of riding we encounted heavy rains on three of the days. It goes without saying good rain gear is a must! We found chartreuse colored gear was noticably more visible than any other color.
  24. Picked up my 2008 Goldwing with 865 miles on it from outside White Plains, NY this past weekend. Flew out from Detroit Saturday afternoon and took possession that evening. Stayed in a hotel that night, started off Sunday morning about 7AM. Didn't start off so good. 2 1/2 hours of 1 mile visibility fog and 57deg not fun on a new bike. Pushed out 360 miles, not bad considering the start I had that morning, the new to me bike and an ongoing intestinal trac malfunction. Monday started out very good west bound on I80, left about 8AM 68deg and semi sunny. about an hour into the ride I thought it looked like it might rain. Pulled off to dhon my rain gear and as I was zipping up the jacket the drops started and continued for the next 2 hrs. Stopped for fuel and the rain was replaced with a 20 MPH or so crosswind for the next 2 hours. Finally made it to I280 north just south of Toledo, OH. Ah, wind at my back what a nice ride. Made it home about 1:30PM a total of 686 miles later. I have to say that I really like my RSV but my first impression of the Wing is I love it. I have to add some bling, comfort items, safety items and other stuff but I'm sure I'll continue to love it. It has the audio / comfort, NAV and ABS on it. I used the NAV and although it is somewhat cumbersome (touch screen would be nice) it functioned flawlessly. I had no idea where I was in White Plains. The person I bought it from punched in the hotel address and I followed the instructions. When I left the hotel I punched in Toledo, OH and followed that. Fortunately I didn't "have to test" the ABS and didn't want to. Now that I have some miles on it I'll test them the next time I'm out (if it stops raining). The slow speed handling & balance is much better IMHO than the RSV, the power is remarkable and smooth. Fit and finish excellent. Electronics / audio are awesome. Little things like the horizontal valve stems just add to the quality of this bike. Thanks for listening, Jim
  25. Spotted a blue venture heading towards Rustburg on 501 south just a couple miles south of Lynchburg, VA. Was it you????
