  1. I have posted about this problem but I'd like your opinion. I have a gas leak. It appears to originate on the right rear carb area. The gas runs down the rear cylinder wall onto the crankcase breather. It leaks less than a teaspoon. A full tank of gas makes the leak worse and the leak disappears when the gas tank is at about 20%. Recently I changed the plugs, all were very good except for the right front cylinder which was gas fouled. Don't know if that's related to the leak. I took it in earlier to a mechanic for this issue and got it back with new jets, one was definitely corroded green, so it wasn't a complete waste. I took it to the same mechanic who says it is the needle valve/pin stuck. I looked around and found one reference to the needle valve sensitivity to alcohol and having the valve switched to stainless. Do you think he's right? I don't have much confidence in this guy because he didn't fix it the first time. The nearest certified Yamaha mechanic is 70 miles away. I should just bite the bullet and take it apart my self, but having never done it before I am not 100% confident.
  2. I have purchased a 1983 venture from an acquaintance and need some assistance. when i bought it it started and ran. I was told that it needed some work to get it running better. so I took it to a recommended shop. after months of waiting, the mechanic told me that the left bank wasn't getting signal to the coil to fire. ( something about a coil near the camshaft) . I brought the bike home frustrated with the time frame, and now the bike won't run at all. I am not a great mechanic, but am capable if necessary. I would like to find a manual for the bike , and some ideas for what to do. none of the local bike shops want to work on it because of the age of the bike, so it looks like I have to do the job myself. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  3. Yeah, I know a little late, but Mechanic has been down the a cold or something, same thing I had last week, finally got around to loading the pics. 4. I bought my 2nd Venture a 2004 Midnight 9000 miles low low price repo. It sat, my guess 6-9 months. The day of purchase I drove it from D.C. to Kansas City on a wing and a prayer. I notice its gas mileage is below average ... about 33 mpg not 38-40 like my old 99. Runs fairly good but the carbs on the left leaked when stopped. Get it home and start seafoam, no good. I know the floats are sticking. I sync the carbs which were way off, smoother but not by much, still krappy MPG. I aint up to a carb rebuild, so I take it to the shop, and shop rejets, the jets were green with corrosion, but he puts in the next larger pilot jet....which I didn't want. He said the floats were not sticking. The bike now backfires like popcorn. He readjusts the settings and the bike runs great, not as fast as the 99, but very good. Backfire constantly. I tighten all the exhaust bolts I can, the bottom front bolts are impossible with removing a pack of stuff. Backfire much better now. Gas milege sucks!!! 28 MPG. Back again to mechanic he says he changed the pilot back to stock. The next day the carb is leaking on the left side ahhggggg!!!! Back again to the mechanic, each visit of course costs more, up to 3 bills now. So now he is replacing the float needles, I wish I worked on this higher level stuff and had more knowledge. The mechanic's a great guy but these repeat trips are the norm not the exception in my experience. The worst part is I may get it back less than right again. The guy is an independent, the local Yamaha dealer's service is so horribly bad it makes this guy look highly competent in comparison. The Honda dealer has teenagers for mechanics, so you can guess how they do. If I had a Harley I would have many good service options available around here, but they shun metric. Opinions please http://www.latenightwithjimmyfallon.com/wtf-pics-tiger-man.jpg Yamaha certified mechanic on break in St Joseph Mo 4300
  5. I already have cabin fever. If I organize another Gettysburg Spring Meet & Eat, who's in? Had a great time last year. Would love to see everyone again! If you weren't there, Sleeperhawk's Mechanic took some great pics: http://s7.photobucket.com/albums/y262/venturerider/Sleeperhawks%20Mechanic%20Gettysburg%2020090418/?start=480 It's real early but I need to start thinking about it if I'm going to do it.
  6. Here is the link to the pics. Awesome M&E, Thanks to BlackJack and Eck for getting this put together. http://s7.photobucket.com/albums/y262/venturerider/Sleeperhawks%20Mechanic%2020090912%20Rome%20GA/
  7. Well, I did it. I had my '08 RSV triked out. It's been in the shop for a week and I finally got it back this afternoon and took it for a short spin. I had the Hannigan Trike kit put on it. I think my mechanic did an amazing job on it. I'm now looking for some different rear wheels and some other chrome to add to it. Trying to attach a picture, not sure if it will work or not. 8. Hey Ladies and Gents, The title is a little misleading, but it sums up what's gonna happen. Today I got the axe from work, as well as about 20 others. Kinda surreal right now, but I'm not wasting any time. This is an opportunity to get out of the huge suck hole called Michigan and move somewhere else. If I can impose on you members, and ask for your help in networking myself, this would put Lonna's mind at ease. I am a powerhouse mechanic and a certified arc welder. We are looking to head either to the Houston Texas area or the Knoxville/Chattanooga Tennessee area. If anyone knows or hears of work in these areas, please shoot me a PM. As always in life, another hurtle and I believe that God is smacking me upside the head for a reason.....and I believe that reason is to get out of Michigan. All the best and hang on for this trip, it should be a good one to listen to
  9. Here are some pics of the Mini-Asheville meet. Now remember, just a few pics is all. http://s7.photobucket.com/albums/y262/venturerider/Sleeperhawks%20Mechanic%20MiniAsheville%2020090711/
  10. Hi everyone! I just aquired a beautiful 1986 Venture Royale 1300. The bike was my brothers and he stopped riding it a couple of years back. I'm in Georgia and the bike is currently still with him in Michigan. He just shipped me the carbs and I'm going to start going through them tomorrow. He replaced the diaphrams in it just recently and I guess didn't get the results he was looking for so he gave up. I'm wondering if a rebuild kit is available or necessary? Also, I'm wondering the do's and donts here. I'm not a mechanic but am pretty good with things like this. A good buddy of mine is a master mechanic and I will be at his house with these carbs tomorrow to start going through them. I'm wondering however, what will NEED to be rerplaced and what can be foregone? My mechanic friend forgets I'm broke and will have me buying EVERYTHING new. I need to only replace what needs to be replaced. I'm on a tight budget. Should all gaskets and o rings be replaced? Needles? Jets? etc? Once I get them all done I'll be flying to Michigan to put them back on, sync them and "hopefully" have a great ride back home. Any help or advice before I get started would be much appreciated. OH!!! I almost forgot. How do I know the diff between 1st gen and 2nd gen?? I'm sure I'll be reading and posting regular. I'm particular about this stuff and will want my new baby to be perfect!!! Thanks again in advance!!
  11. A friend of mine just bought a hypercharger for his 1100 V-star. He hasn't found a mechanic to install it yet, but has some questions about perormance improvements. Does anyone know how much of a seat of the pants improvement this will make? If rejetting is necessary? How much this affects milage?(milage! you don't put a hypercharger on for milage?!) Also does anyone know of a good mechanic that he can trust this fix to, near Holly,Mi. Thanks in advance, Big Mike
  12. When I took my 86 VR to the shop for some work I told the mechanic that the battery light would be on because I installed a new battery and that I would fix it when I got it back home. When I picked up the bike the mechanic had wired the battery sensor to the positive battery post. Needless to say the battery light was off. I told him that could damage the electronics and he disconnected the sensor from the battery. Everything seems to work correctly. How can I tell if the chip has been damaged. Will the light stay on or will other things quit working?
  13. Ok, here is the thread for the Georgia M&E. Sorry, but we do not have a pic of the "Bee in the Bonnett" with Dragonrider. Mechanic does not take pics of other people's misery. :rotf: just mine. http://s7.photobucket.com/albums/y262/venturerider/Sleeperhawks%20Mechanic%20GA%20ME%2020090509/
  14. I am in the process of trying to figure out how I will modify my 2004 RSV before taking off on my 30 day ride this August. I am not a good mechanic, hell I'm not even a good backyard mechanic. I'm looking for "Plug and play", if this is the right term, for front and rear lights. I'm looking at either adding passing lamps in the front or changing to a HID light for increased visibility. I don't ride at night so visibility to cagers is my biggest concern. I'm looking for some type of new lights for the rear-I guess a LED brake light and turn signals if they exist. I'm also looking to replace the stock horn if there is one that can be added without a lot of modifications needed. Also, (sorry) also looking to order brakes on line for the bike. I have someone who will help me put these on. I'd also appreciate suggestions on replacement tires and where the best place to order them. To summarize: Front lights: Passing lamps or new HID light? Rear lights: Horn: Tires: Front and rear brakes: Thanks all
  15. Here are the pics for Gettysburg and the Natural Bridge stop Sledgehammer, Mechanic and I made on the way. http://s7.photobucket.com/albums/y262/venturerider/Sleeperhawks%20Mechanic%20Gettysburg%2020090418/
  16. New member here. I'm needing to find a mech. around Logan Ohio that can get my carbs right. I've owned the bike since last May. When I first got it it was low on power so I took it to a mechanic but it was worse. Took it to another shop and the bike still wasn't right. Took it to an old school shop and it ran much better but still seemed low on power and would shake under load, but after 3 shops I drove it like it was and the bike served me well. 20,000 mile later it had less power and the fuel mileage dropped. I called around but noone seemed to be interested in working on it so I made a manometer and tried to sync them myself but made it worse. Can someone suggest a good mechanic or fellow venture owner that has a carbtune and knows how to adjust in my area. It's an 1983
  17. Well, for the bad or good news, depends on your perspective. MECHANIC left me :crying: Since she has left me, she is now available No more apple, blueberry, cherry or coconut cream pies for me. ONLY FOR the WEEKEND:rasberry::rasberry:
  18. One of my forks started to leak last summer. Pulled them both off the bike over the weekend and brought them into a reputable mechanic to get new seals and progressive springs. Was informed that one of the forks was worn and pitted beyond safe usage. The other had a worn but usable lower bushing. The mechanic gave me 2 choices... 1. New Fork from Yamaha @$325.00. 2. A pair of Aftermarket forks for @$265.00. My third option would be a set of forks from ebay off of a bike with 39,000 mile that do not leak. The bike has 75,000 miles on it and is a sound runner. I'm leaning towards the ebay set (I like cheap) but the set of aftermarket forks are tempting too. Any advice or other options I haven't thought of would be appreciated! Thanks
  19. What can I expect to pay for the 16K mile scheduled maintanence? Thanks for any insight. BTW..I am useless as a mechanic, so don't even bother with DIY.
  20. Well as you know my bike wouldn't start and now it is starting (see spark problem). Well I spent 2 days putting the bike and all the equipment back together. So I was so happy I started it right up and all I could hear was back firing and it was noisy. So I said to myself it's been sitting a month so it might need running down the road. Well that didn't work when I tried to give it gas and go the rpms would go down and the bike won't go so I pushed it back home. I looked down in the carbs as saw one of them was not moving so I took off the cover and pused it a little so it would work. I also put carb cleaner down in it. Well all the carbs were moving again but man was it popping alot and loud. It would idle great at 3rpm but when you went to 4 rpms the bike wanted to cut off and drop down to 1 rpm. The 2 carbs on the left side when you are sitting down on the bike we popping bad and fire would come out of them when you reved it. At 4 rpm the front carb would spudder and fire would come out of it and the compression would drop. When I tried to give it more gas the back carb would also do it and if you gave it more gas the bike would stall out. I called my mechanic and he said it sounded like the plug wires might be bad and I might to replace them well I did that and there was no change. So I gave up it's mechanic fault but I spent 650.00 to get the bike so it would start and now it doesn't run. The bike sounds great at 3 rpms but when you go to 4rpms the carb sliders start moving and it starts to back firing and the bike won't move. Am getting tired of this so if anyone wants to but 2 86 ventures loaded with chrome and all the extras will sell both of them for 3,500.00 I am tired of spending money since most of the mechanics know nothing on how to fix ventures. I will just ride my vw trike it easier to fix and I am not that motorcycle savy mechanic. Meatloaf:sick:
  21. Here are Mechanic's pics. not many, I would not let her take her gloves off to take pictures. http://s7.photobucket.com/albums/y262/venturerider/Sleeperhawks%20Mechanic%20VA%20ME%2020081206/

  23. OK, I have a 2006 RS Midnight Venture which I bought new. I love the bike and want to keep it in tip-top shape. I have been changing the oil every 2500 miles or so, but recently switched to synthetic and plan on changing it every 5000 from now on. Let me be totally honest and confess that I am NOT mechanically minded and have some questions about which I am totally confused. So folks, I need your expertise on the following as owners, riders and mechanics on the Ventures. 1) If I put the K&N air filters in, do I have to have the carbs re-jetted? I have the RoadKing mufflers, and the mechanic at the dealer said I would probably have to let them re-jet the carbs because the increased air flow will lean out the bike and could cause problems. Another mechanic said re-jetting is not necessary when installing the K&N filters. CONFUSING!!! :doh:Who is right?? 2) Spark plugs - I have been told that the NGK Iridium plugs are THE best. At $12 each, they should be! Regular NGK plugs are $3 each. If the Iridium plugs are beneficial and improve start up, performance, gas mileage , or last longer, or something, I don't mind spending the $$. Problem is, I have been told "Yes, they are much better" by one dealer's mechanic, and "No, they just cost more and don't improve anything" by another dealer's mechanic. Also, one said change the plugs every 8000 miles and the other said just run the plugs until they give me a problem, like hard start up or engine missing. Sheeshhh!! :doh:Who is right? 3) Gasoline - I have used the 87 octane for the last few months and haven't seen any problems as of yet, but sure don't want to mess up my ride. One dealer mechanic said I should use ONLY 91 octane or higher in my bike. The other said 87 or 89 is fine to use. Oh brother!! Who the heck is right?? HELP!!!!! Thanks in advance!
  24. Sleeperhawk or Mechanic lately?
  25. Are any of you going out to St. Judes? Mechanic and I are kind of open as to when we leave Friday afternoon/evening going through Ashville, NC or going to Atlanta. Need to get a count going to let Dragonrider know. Oh Yeah, Mechanic is sweating it out big time now. :crying::rotf:
