  1. Has anyone had a drive train lockup while in motion on a 1st. generation? Or a brake lock up that caused loss of control. Mine is ok but getting age on it. Bike runs great and I am starting to venture on longer trips and may end up on a several week trip next year. The scoot is a 87 venture with 35000 miles on her. Every thing works great. Ideas??? Thanks!!
  2. As a not-so-glamorous part of my job, I occasionally have to visit suppliers when they are giving us grief. I shouldn't have to do it, I don't really like to do it, and they really don't like me to do it. Sigh.. Anyways, I have to make a trip to Brampton, Ont, which is about 150 km (90 miles) from my house. Today was supposed to be the first nice day in ages (no thunderstorms) and I haven't been on the bike in over a week. So, I decide "What the heck.., I am taking the bike." The trip there was fantastic - the 401 (major highway) rolled right along with none of the typical backups and delays that seem to be an indication of summer in Ontario. I get there, I listen and nod politely to the excuses/misdirection.. cut through it all as best I can, have them draft up some action plans, arrange with my business to give them a break on tomorrow's delivery so they could actually do what I requested, and then I head back out. It's warm & humid, but not unbearable like it has been the last few days. I jump onto the bike, head back to the 401 (highway) to go home - I had been on surface streets for about 10 mins, the temp gauge was reading normal, everything going just fine, when the bike starts to lug a bit. Then much more dramatically... "hmmm.." I am on the on-ramp to the highway already trying to merge onto 4 full lanes of traffic doing 70 mph (compared to my 50) and the bike is straining like it is giving birth. I am running out of ramp, but there is a nice paved shoulder. Hit the 4-way flashers, navigate as best I can to the shoulder, and as soon as I pull in the clutch, both wheels lock. "Whoah !".... keep things upright, but there were some tense moments. Shut the bike off, try to push it: no go - full lock. That nice super-heated-brake-pad odour fills my helmet. My mind flashes back to a previous post that recalled the brake fluid on a hot humid day expanding to the point where the linked front & back brakes locked. The suggestioon was to keep a 8mm wrench handy. I had taken it to heart, had the wrench, plus a 16inch length of hose to slip over the bleeder. Aside from some very choice expletives about how close the passing vehicles were as I was madly bleeding off the excess brake fluid, I had no issues whatsoever and was back mobile within 10 minutes. So, to whomever posted that suggestion, I (and my family) heartily thank you:thumbsup2:. Postscript : I have ridden in some hot weather, and had no issues. All the fluid was near last year when I picked up the bike in August. Any ideas why all of a sudden things decided to lock up ? PPS: And, for information's sake, I got off the 401 at the next exit, found a quiet parking lot and gave the bike a good once over. Then proceeded to thoroughly test the brakes, and found no issues. Regardless, I completely changed the brake fluid (front and rear) once I got home. Thanks again - this group is fantastic.
  3. First, decide what parts are needed for the job. Such as the electronic climate controle module for an Expedition. Next, check the dealer pricing. List is $713.00 and discount on-line is about $553.00. Local junkyards want about $110-150. All of this is way too expensive. So, wait until about 2AM and go to Lonestarmedics house. Pop out the door lock on his Expedition and tear his controller out and just chop the wires and vaccum tubes. Yep, believe it or not my truck was broken into for that purpose alone!!! I had to go get a used unit and have them chop the harness out of the wrecked vehicle. Then spice the wiring, run a new set of vaccum tubes and replace fuse. Ordered a lock cylinder and need to get it keyed. I alway thought this neighborhood was decent. I guess too decent since we have the right vehicles. I have anti-theft but no screaming siren. Going to fix that. We have wanted to move and have been waiting for a short sale. Now we just want to get out of town. Thanks for reading, just needed to vent. We need property with about 150 yards clear around the edges. Should be able to lead a robber on foot with a .308 with that!!!!! Yes, comprehensive deductible $500.00 and the repair was under $$200.00 New dash harness, controller, and labor almost $3000.00. JB

    2nd Gen Key?

Hello everyone ! I bought my bike used afew years back a RSV 2006 and it came with only one key with no key tag number. How do I go about getting a spare key either from my local dealer or a lock smith? Do I need VIN number or just my only key to get a second one made? Thanks for your input................ Mark
  5. What causes the throttle to return to the closed position once the grip is released. The new '88 I have doesn't return by itself. It's like having a throttle lock on the control. Any suggestions? Dave
  6. I had a unique opportunity yesterday morning. I took my 06 RSTD to work and upon my arrival I removed my riding boots and mesh jacket and stuffed them into the left (port) side saddlebag. I also had a sweatshirt in there which I laid on top of my jacket. I closed the lid then realized I left my pager in my jacket pocket so I pushed the lock / button to open the lid again. No luck. The button would not allow me to depress it. I checked the lock with my key to make sure the lock was okay and the key turned freely but there was no way it was going to allow me to depress it and release the lid latches inside. One of my employees was nearby so the two of us pushed and pulled on the lid and the lock / release button to try and get it aligned better in case something was jammed. Still no luck and the button still wouldn't budge. I pryed off the plastic trim plate that surrounds the lock cylinder but that didn't give me access to anything. I had visions of getting the sawzall out of my employees truck and cutting the lid off. As one last attempt before resorting to such drastic measures, I got my assistant to pull up on the rear corner of the lid as hard as he could without breaking it to allow me to get a couple of fingers inside. I managed to grasp the edge of my sweatshirt and pull it out through the crack. The button then worked and the lid was open. We took everything out and tried shutting the lid again and all worked fine, but when I tried locking the lock I had a dickens of a time to get the lock to unlock. Last night I dismantled the whole works and found that when we pushed the lock button down so hard we managed to bend the actuating arm that acts to lock the bag as well as actuating a paddle plate, which in turn pulls on a long rod that then actuates the latches. What a complex assembly for such a simple task! All is straight and true and working properly now, but I would advise all RSTD and second gen riders to be very careful about what they put in those bags and make sure that nothing gets too close to those lid release levers. I also wonder if any of you have run into this problem on your bike before?
  7. I was sitting on the bike for a minute after getting to work this morning when I discovered that you can use the ignition lock to lock the forks when turned to the right. Why? They sit at such an upright angle when locked to the left that I couldn't imagine locking to the right and walking away from it. I just can't reason why Yammi would go to the effort of drilling an extra hole.
  8. I was in a meeting and had rode my bike to the location. Being security conscience I tried to use the handlebar lock on my ignition switch. When I came out of the meeting, i noticed that all the lights were on, on my bike and when i tried to start it the battery was dead. Now anytime I lock the handle bars, all of the lights come on. Any ideas? This is for a 87 Venture Royale.
  9. The cruise control on my bike works fine, but my daily commute has many curves, hills, and places that i prefer to handle the engine power myself. As such I still would like to lock the throttle occaisionally while I relax my hand. Anyone have a plastic thumb locker on their 2nd gen? I don't even know if it will fit.
  10. I've got a complete matching lock set off a MK1 1983 to 1985 Venture and Venture Royale that is up for grabs. The set includes: Keyed ignition switch trunk mounting lock trunk lid lock 2 saddlebag mounting locks 2 saddlebag lid locks 2 helmet locks dashboard lock One original yamaha key that fits all locks Anyone interested PM me.
  11. Hi all tomorrow i will be putting my rotors back on the wheels of my 99 rsv frt & rear dose anyone know the touque spec. And what is the best lock tight to use if any. Thank you kevin wisor 1999 rsv jax fl
  12. That the word processor on this site seems to be becoming more and more unstable. I keep having lock up problems message deletion and weird things happening when trying to used the enhanced features. The attachment and smilie functions take forever to load up if they do at all and quite often lock the computer up when they are used. Today for some odd reason the program kept deleteing the last paragraph of a post on a private message every time I retyped it about a dozen times. Just the last paragraph. What's up with that?
  13. Make sure to latch and lock BOTH saddlebag cover latches. I left one latched but unlocked out of pure forgetfulness and guess what happened? On a very rough road close to home the lid flew off at 20-25 mph and slid down the road on its top of course. Now I have to get it repaired knowing if I had taken the extra minute or two to lock the latches, it wouldn't have happened. I always seem to learn from stupid mistakes
  14. I have a problem with my right hand, and sometimes my left, going dead after riding a while. I know...Carpol Tunnel... On the '83 I have a throttle lock that I can set in order to relax the hand and get the blood flow back into it. Some rides are worse than others, but on Saturday's VWIV ride from Ft Hunter-Ligette, 25 miles over to Hwy1 on the coast, we were in some fairly twisty road conditions, and I couldn't set the lock to relieve the numbness in my right hand. So for just about all of that portion of the ride... 1.5 hrs.. I had to twist the throttle with a numb hand. After a while it hurt like 'H'. Long story short, I think I screwed up my hand big time. It's been two weeks and the tips of the fingers on the right hands are numb 24/7 and they ain't getting any better. Went to the Doc's and she was non-comittal as to the cause. I have an appointment with... I guess.. a neurologist for tests on the 12th. I wondering if anybody else has had this happen to them, and did you finally get the feeling back?? Talk about a PITA trying to zip up the fly when I can't feel the tang!!!

    Xena disc lock

Would anyone know what Xena disc lock would fit on the Venture S 2008? I should be getting my Venture within 2 weeks and I need an alarm but I rather have a disc lock too. (double security) Cheers
  16. I just bought my RSTD last wednesday and I really enjoy it. Had an 1100 Vstar for 9 years had to upgrade. Anyway was wondering if anyone knows if they make a chrome cover for the black plastic section around the lock on the saddlebags. Also if any of you know someone that has an 1100 Vstar Custom, I removed all my accessories before trading in and am looking to sale. It was a '99 model.
  17. I made a list of issues to be looked at on the 5 year warranty. Some of the things were common issues like a. front mounting brackets for the lower faring broken b. right bag hard to close and lock almost impossible to work c. whine in the rear end and a couple of other things d. front brakes pulsate e. cb antenna broken at ceramic spacer. The dealership told me these are all non-warranty issues. I called Yamaha and they said they would cover the lock but nothing else. I asked to talk to a sales manager and they said it would take 24 hours for them to return my call. All of these items are on record my warranty expires july 26 or there abouts. Can anyone offer further advise. I am the one that lost 5th gear a couple of years ago. Thanks mike
  18. I want to get a disc lock. What brand and model are you using?
  19. Hey guys & gals, I was taking off my saddlebags today, got the right side off, opened the lid, took off the 4 bolts, no problem. However, left side, I couldn't get the lid open. Somehow, the locking mechanism has broken. Any of you know how to open the lid with the lock broken? I tried just about everything I could without taking a sledge hammer to it. Any suggestions?
  20. well, after my bike accident in september one, of the broken parts was the plastic locking mechanism on the radio tray. one of our great members (thanks Bongobob) had a good spare lock assembly with no key. i sat and anylized how i would get the tumbler out and install my tumbler out of the broken assembly. i figured it out and by drilling a small hole in the plastic of the good assembly, inserting a small screwdriver i was able to remove the tumbler and install my bikes original tumbler into the good plastic lock assembly. if anyone needs to know where to drill the one hole, p/m me and i will give you instuctions. cheers, Scott
  21. :detective:I am following up on the thread I started a week ago and here are the results I promised to report. 13 rear brake lock ups were reported, 12 of those were due to emergency stops, and 4 of those 12 reulted in an accident and the bike going down. That is a 33% probability of crashing when using the rear brake in an emergency. That to me is pretty alarming. Almost all of the riders that locked up their rear brake felt that it was way too easy to lock up. One person brought up the point that the harder you stop, your right foot will press more on the rear brake due to the G forces generated in severe braking and weight transfer that takes place from rear to front. You have two forces working against you. 1. you moving forward on the bike, pressing on the rear pedal more and 2. weight coming off of the rear wheel. My opinion is that it is a freaking miracle more of us don't crash when making an emergency stop, even when using the front and rear brakes properly. I suspect that this problem is not unique to just the Royal Star series of bikes. I suspect that with HD making ABS avaiable as an option more manufacturers will be under more pressure to improve the brakes on our motorcycles. I certainly hope this will be the case.
  22. Check out the website for information on the lifesaver tcb for rear and front lock ups. http://www.lifesavertcb.com Regards Zach
  23. This new product is hydraulic brake control valve. This little valve replaces your existing banjo bolt. You can use this part in the master cylinder or caliper. If you have 2 calipers in the front, but it it the master cylinder to run both calipers. The reason for that is, we are relieving the initial grab in the brake system, or a pressure spike. There are four different levels of this part depending how you like to ride or how you like the feel of the breaks. This part also gets your shocks involved. The shocks absorb majority of the wieght instead of the ground or tire. This part also saves 3 times the wear and tear on your pads. The easiest way to discribe how it feels is, like the brakes in a car without the ABS reaction. The hard you apply the faster you slow down. The TCB valve will not completely prevent lock up. The lock up is later in the braking prosses.Just lock up happens when you want it to. Please ask as many questions you might have. Again thanks for the support. Regards Zach
  24. Reading the headlight modulator discussion has got me to thinkin. A lot of wrecks happen as a result of improper use of the rear brake. Highsides and such, so I'm thinking about removing my rear brake. That way it can't lock up causing me to go sidways and then high side when I stupidly release the brake during the slide. Well what do yall think? Yeah I know, I'm a smarta$$.:rotf::rotf:
  25. I have a 1988 Venture Royale with MAC exhaust. Should the centre stand fold and lock in place properly with this exhaust? I notice the original factory exhaust is notched to allow for the stand to clear.....the MAC exhaust isn't. It appears my centre stand foot actuator bar/pedal has been reworked to allow clearance around the exhaust.....but it lacks proper spring tension and there is nothing to lock it tight. With poor spring tension it seems to bounce up and down easily. I have presently tie wrapped it to hold it secure. Please comment or give me direction on this. Thanks. rez
