  1. This last Friday 7-2 we were on are way home from a wonderful trip to the Black Hill. Pulled into a Flying J truck stop in Sioux Falls SD for gas. Go to turn in and down we go slid about 15 feet on its side, bike and trailer do a 180 and I laid in the middle of intersection wife step off the bike as it went down and didn't get hurt. My left knee hurt pretty bad . Come to find out a truck driver that had filled up forgot to put there cap back on and as he turned the corner to leave spilled out fuel on to the pavement and it splashed into the turning lane. No one seen who spilled the fuel. I didn't see it and when I braked and turned it was just like ice and down we went. After about an hour of talking to the manager, police and EMTs we get on bike and finish our last 250 miles. Go to hospital that night to have knee checked out find out I have a deep tear in my calf muscle and little road rash. The lesson is WATCH THE INTERSECTION AT TRUCK STOPS . Everyone be careful and have a safe summer I know I am going to pay more attention to the my turns in to fuel stops from now on.
  2. We have to get up extra early tomorrow, we have to be at the hospital at 5:30 in the morning. Charlene is going back in for a total hip replacement. Hopefully this will be the last surgery she will have, they say there is a fair chance her knee pain may lessen after this surgery, if so it will be the end to all of her problems, I dont know how she has put up with all the pain from her back, hip and knee. along with me the royal pain. She should be out of the hospital by Saturday if all goes well. Recovery will be much faster than her back surgery. She will be up and walking the afternoon of the surgery. Please keep her in your prayers.
  3. I have a few small odds & ends laying around from my MKI rebuild that I don't feel like putting on ebay. I just put a lot of 1st gen stuff on ebay, including a set of side covers & knee fairings that are in good shape. Do an advanced search on seller ID dingy101 if interested. 1st freebie is a louver from a knee fairing. Only one of the louvers is there but it could be moved to another unit. I also have a complete set of brake lines. I really don't advocate using old parts like these, but I understand someone may need them that can't afford new ones. MKI headlights. Plastic engine heat fairings. Couple of sets of MKI cams. Valve covers California air unit. Thermostat housing Horn set MKI clutch - missing one full friction plate. All this stuff is in need of cleaning. All I ask for it is actual shipping costs. Gary
  4. Just got back from Charlene's second follow up for her spine surgery, which went very well, she is healing up fine, back pain is gone, at the same office we had an appointment with another surgeon to look at her hip and knee, she will be having her right hip replaced sometime in May, which is just around the corner, she is releived that we are moving on a lot quicker than we expected. I think if it were me I would have contacted Dr. "K" by now....but she has put up with more than I ever could, then if she still needs it the knee will be replaced next. Charlene spoke to the Dr. office today and the date is set for May 19, so in a little over 2 1/2 weeks back to the hospital. Like I have said before, this is her rebuilding year...........
  5. I know its been brought up before, but I couldn't find anything worth pursuing on the search function here. I'm looking to find a suitable (stock) factory replacement for the right knee vent (the one located on the side cover) or two "fabricated" vents. If I can't find a stock one, then I'll try the "custom" method. I had seen someone had once made chrome blanking plates and they seemed to work well. I was wondering if anyone had made the blanking plates and then had a metal shop stamp louvers into the metal? It would look similar to the ones for this aircraft. http://www.vincesrocket.com/silver%20louvers.jpg
  6. hello everyone. just a little update on my knee problems. well the apointment was to be at 2:00 i arived at 1:45. the receptionist said he,s running late. i thought oh ok there is only 5 of us sitting in the waiting room. well time goes by. it is now 3:00 im thinking this aint good if the other 4 are before me?? finaly at 3:45 i go in. the doctor says james hows that knee doing? i said you mean kimberly?? he looked at me like i lost my mind. and said whos kimberly and why you calling your knee kimberly? i said doc its like this this knee has been injured for over a year now. about that time i found a new girlfriend. well after the operation. neither one would support me. and being as i couldnt afford 2 bad things i thought i would have to at least keep the one that im firmly attached to. he said james my day has been going bad and you made me smile shots are on me. then that sucker stuck me with a big needle. so on the way out there where 2 gentlemen sitting there. they said how much longer do you think it will be for us to see him. i said hey he got a new nice looking nurse. the one old gentlmen said . hell wont be till friday. might as well go home.
  7. My wife decided she wanted to ride so she went to the ABATE safety course. She was top of her class. A couple weeks later she bought a 2000 Honda Shadow ACE 750 from some people she knows from work. She was doing good until she jumped a curb, didn't lay it down, she rode it out. Tore her ACL in her right knee. She rode it again this last weekend before we put it away for the winter. Having surgery on her knee in two weeks to repair the ACL. She'll be ready to ride by Spring. She's planning on riding it to Maintenance Day at Don's....... The above paragraph was posted on another thread awhile back. Sue had surgery yesterday on her knee to repair/replace the ACL she tore in her mishap. Everything went well and she is recuperating. She can't do a whole lot for awhile but she should be ready to ride again by Spring. Yes, I'm being the good husband and taking good care of her.
  8. Sorry if this is using the wrong thread category, but I know I read on here somewhere that one of our members made wind reflectors for the knee area. I can't find it and if you know who it is, please let me know so I can contact them. I am really interested in a set. thanks Don
  9. Things didnt go well at work today, I had an accident, I tripped over a low metal cart, the kind that are made a steel and not very forgiving, I was carrying a rather long piece of alum., and didnt see the cart sitting where is was not supposed to be, I hit it with my left shin, fell over the top of it, after jettisoning the metal away from me, I landed with my right knee on top of the steel corner therefore messing that leg up, and balancing out the pain from the left side, on my way down I must have thrust my right hand out to break my fall and that it did, of course I landed on it badly causing me more pain to equal the pain in the right shin & left knee. A co-worker saw me land badly and came to my aid, by the time he got to me, I was sitting up, I dont remember how I landed, but I do remember him squatting down next to me asking me if I was ok, I sort of stared at him dumbly, and he asks me again if I was ok, and my reply was yeah I'm fine with the exception of the pain in my right shin:starz:, pain in the left knee :starz:and a throbbing right wrist:starz:...........I sure would like to get hold of the Idiot that left that cart where it was not supposed to be, I would shove it up his you know what, then ask him...........Are you OK? To add insult to injury, I had to go get my wrist x-rayed, and they had the HR manager take me, and she does nothing but talk about the most boring things the whole time. I was so glad when they called me in for the exam, first thing out of their mouth, pee in this bottle for a drug screen.................Dang, if I would have known that, I wouldnt have taken a leak before I left the plant. Had to hang around after the Xray till I had to pee.........Then they test it and I test positive for opiates, I take Hydrocodone daily for pain, just once in the morning, but it was enough to show positive, now they have to send it off for further tests to make sure I am not abusing it................at least they didnt release those results to my employer, they will only do that if it shows I was impaired or abusing it.........which I am not.......might need to take some now for all the aches I am having....................... And how was your day??????
  10. Well I'd like to thank Tom and all the boys that signed my new Texas Passport ....it was a lot of trouble to go though but so very kind also ...Thanks so much ...oh and the summer's been busy and I haven't been on the site much ....actually haven't rode much at all this summer ...got a bum knee I don't trust right now .... Just wanted to thank everyone of the boys from Texas ...won't be making your get together this fall ...U'll take care and hope we see each others again in the future!
  11. I decided to change the garage door opener today. I had an ancient opener on the second door and recently put a new opener on my first door. The one I took down I inspected and found that all it needed was a new drive gear. $8.50 on ebay - I took the old gear out and replaced it, check and all was good to go. Here comes the stupid part 4 months ago I had a total right knee replacement and things were going OK. I wasn't totally happy with the results but life goes on right ? I could ride my Venture 2 up safely so what more does a guy want ? While on the ladder I removed the blots from the old drive unit and started down the ladder. I obviously forgot how to count because as I stepped down with my good leg to the floor level I realized that my bad knee was still on the SECOND step of the ladder. Normally that would not be a problem BUT the bad knee was the one that was just replaced. When I could open my eyes thru the pain I saw that I had bent my replacement knee more than the Dr. said I would ever be able to. So there I stand with a 20 or 25 lb. drive unit in both hands, my leg bent were it shouldn't be and nobody home. I managed to get into the house and lay down on the floor long enough to quit sweating and regain a regular breathing rate. With the help of left-over pain medicine (I dislike the word DRUGS) and some ice most of the swelling has gone down. So perhaps one good thing did come of the incident after all. I still have a small job to complete for tomorrow ? or whenever I gather enough courage to get on a ladder again. AND -- it looks like I may have gotten a LOT more range of motion in my replacement knee. Life is good and God is GREAT !!
  12. Howdy folks! Don't know if it's been my usual "every 6 months" or not but here goes. I'll keep it short this time. Still truckin' but haven't gone back to work yet. They have a couple jobs running in Bismarck and in Poplar, MT but it's flippin back & forth between the two. They bid on a job in April for Max, ND that will run the rest of the season. They've started the pipe work and when they're pretty much done with that they'll bring the side-dumps up so off to work I go when that happens. For those of you that know me you've seen me limping around here & there for about 5yrs now. I fell on my right knee in the winter of 2003 and just never did anything about it, couldn't afford to take time off of work. So I've babied it, relying on my left knee to carry the load (and yes, the load could use a lil work but that's another story!) and as of last Friday, an MRI revealed that the cartilage is about gone. Since this WAS my good knee I'm sure the right knee has gone to s^*t as well. Again, not being able to afford missing work I won't be doing anything about it really until I get laid off this winter. So I'll keep on limping my way around. At PiP, just give ol' gimpy some room and don't be in a hurry if you're waitin on me, it'll take me awhile! Crow & I are doin' pretty good. He's still working at the greenhouse in town here. He does most of the physical work there and it's starting to show on him too. Damn aging, it sucks! Kids are doing fine as well as the grandkids. My son never made it to Afghanistan. They want him to spend some time as the reservist he signed up to be before they'll let him go active. I'll leave it at that.................lol. So other than the knee thing, everything is going pretty well. Haven't ridden the scoot yet this year, just too painful. She started right up this Spring so that's a good thing. Can't wait til Sept to see some of you folks. Gary/Annie......... here chicky chicky! Red....... bring some plugs, you'll be okay! Steve........... did we decide on fried chicken or grilled hon? (LMAO) Ya'll take care & be safe! Brandi
  13. I'm not planning anything anymore, something always happens. Planed on meeting other Michigan riders this morning to go to Feebirds MD. So yesterday I'm at the car wash getting the bike all ready to go. I go to get on the scoot and feel a pain in my right knee. 3 hours later the knee won't bend, support any weight and is twice the normal size. Go home take some pills, ice it down and go to bed. Get up at 5:00am to get ready to go, knee feels somewhat OK, swelling down, think ALRIGHT time to hit the road. 20 minutes into getting ready and it's all swelled up again and not working. Tried again at 8:30am and same thing. Beautiful day for riding and can't even walk. So if everything goes as it ussally does by Monday knee will be fine like nothing happened and just wanted to ruin the weekend. So no more planning, just last minute moves, seems to work better. Ok I'm done whining. Hope everyone having a good time at MD.
  14. Well after three years of troubles with both knees, I finally got to see the doctor I saw when all the problems started. He had an MRI done on the right knee and found a torn meniscus. He did surgery shortly after that. It felt good till things went south after a few weeks. It never got better. In the mean time my left knee started killing me again too. Another doctor, (thanks to workman's comp), had an MRI done on that one and said there was a degenerating meniscus, and there was nothing he could do about it. Now after all this time I was ale to see the original doctor. He looked at the MRI done by the other doctor and said it looks there was a tear in the meniscus all along. He ordered a rescan on both knees. In a way, I'll be pi$$ed if I find out that the left knee was torn all along, but then I'll be glad if it can be fixed. After the last three years, and this summer, I'll have about enough of the doctors! I had a mammogram, (or is that a maogram), a few weeks ago. Luckily no cancer. Just a very tender, large, lump in my right breast. Tomorrow I get another MRI. This time on both knees. Who knows what that will lead to. More arguing with workman's comp I'm sure. Then on the 22nd I get to have surgery on my sinuses. Maybe after 38 years, I can finally breath through my nose and smell like a normal person.
  15. Well I'll be missing the Meet again this year but this time its my right knee. Doing a MRI on June 3 . I messed it up when I was changing out a water pump on a cat motor in a dump truck, move a way my knee was not intended to move and something popped bummer...... I was going to ride up with Snarley Bill & Roadkill and maybe some of the other family members next week, but there's always next year....I hope. Everyone have fun and eat plenty food for me and send some photos of the pond monster too..... Buddy
  16. OK, so the title is a little misleading.........Had my knee surgery on Wed the 25th. They found a slightly torn meniscus, loads of arthritis and two nice bone fragments floating around in there, occasionally sliding up under my knee cap and causing all sorts of mischief. Well, theyre out, the tear is repaired and I took my first big move today by making it up the stairs to my bedroom all by myself. Im finally getting mobility back in the knee again. Guess those bone fragments locked things up pretty well when they wanted to. One fragment was the size of a fingernail. Only had to take Oxycodone for 3 days. Still have about 85 left..........Should be a heck of a lot more comfy on the bike now. Love my new walker too...........
  17. I had total knee replacement 12-23-08.So Ive been laid up but doing well.Just wanted to thank this group.Even though I dont post much its a lot of enjoyment to read.I learn alot about my bike on here. You guys are alot of fun.Havent rode much this summer because of knee but thats heeling now.I feel like I know alot of you and hope to get to meet some of you someday.
  18. I had knee sugery today to repair torn cartilage in my right knee and remove a bone chip on the kneecap. Everything went real good. They gave me a shot of morphine and I was tripping out all day till tonight and now it does hurt. Maybe the pain will ease up tomorrow. I am glad to have it over with and in a few weeks will be back to normial, for me that is. tew47
  19. Charlene is finally getting something done about her problems, knee, back, and hip. The dr. did another mri on her hip and her knee and after her last visit, she is now scheduled for orthoscopic surgery on her knee. She has a torn miniscus, damage to joint and needs to repair a tendon on her left knee. Recovery should be a little over 2 weeks if all goes well. Dont know if she will be able to ride in comfort after that or wait until she has her hip surgery, so keep her in your prayers for an easy go of it. It would be great to have her back on the bike again. The surgery is going to be on the 9/11/2008.
  20. Wow, been riding a good while and this is the first time I ever had a bee in my pants. Riding along minding my own business and pow!! One got me on the right leg about the knee on the outside. Grabbed that bugger and rolled him good in my blue jeans. Thought I got him but about 3 minutes later he got me again on the inside of my knee right in the bend. After I stopped and shook out a big ole red wasp I didn't feel to good about getting my feet up on the highway pegs. But I did anyway. What if someone came up with a little filter to put over your pants leg to let in the wind and keep out them critters? Wind sure feels good running up them britches!!
  21. Janet has been in the Hospital sense last Monday, they finally did surgery on her Friday, they cut a 3in long x 1/2 wide gash across her knee, cut out the bad tissue and stuffed it full of foam, ( Wound Vac ) well yesterday, she finds out she is alergic to the foam and the tape that they use, so all of that had to come out. now they are using 4x4 gauze soaked in saleen and then a dry compost on the top, this has to be changed every day, the wound needs to heal from the inside out, so it will be open for awhile, and I get to learne how to change all of that out. She will probably be in the hospital all this next week to make sure that it does not get infected again. I know she is ready to come home. Please keep her in your prayers!! Thanks , Kreg
  22. I just bought and received my Tour Master Caliber Pants. My first impressions are they're great. There are several pluses here. 1. Even though I have alarge waist they had a pair that fit and had legs short enough. I bought the 42-44 waist with 33 inch inseam. This means They don't drag on the ground like other brands I tried on at that waist size. 2. They have adjustable position knee armor. I was able to adjust the knee armor up a few inches and they are now positioned perfectly on my knees. Other brands that I tried the knee armor was around my ankles. 3. The zipper in the back for attaching the pants to your jacket matches up to my Mossi jacket. 4. With the thermal liners in there is no way I will be cold. 5. They are waterproof. I bought them from http://www.newenough.com for a steal plus free shipping! http://www.newenough.com/tour_master_caliber_pants_page.htm I'll report back after I actually get to ride with them. Next weekend we are doing a 900 mile trip and it may get real cold.
