  1. A few of us are planning a trip to the Badlands, Rushmore and some Wyoming riding (or anything else around there). But we are wondering about the timing of our trip. We plan on leaving July 22-31 and the Sturgis Rally is going to be from August 8-14. Will we have any difficulty getting rooms from July 24, 25 and 26? Opinions? Also...we had planned to stay in Rapid City, SD and use that as a "staging" place for all of our day trips. But after looking at the map, I am thinking that Custer, SD would be a better staging place...they have motels and it makes the southern part (badlands, Wyoming, rushmore) more accessible since our only trip north will be a quick (very quick) trip through Sturgis. Are there any other OFF THE WALL things to see in the area that most people don't know about? How about any recommendations on Motels in the Custer, SD area?
  2. My first wife insisted that I accompany her on her trips to WallyWorld. Unfortunately, like most men, I found shopping boring and preferred to get in and get out. Equally unfortunate she, like most women, loves to browse. Near the end of this first marriage, my dear wife received the following letter from the local WallyWorld . . . Dear Mrs. Jones, Over the past six months, Gary has caused quite a commotion in our store. We cannot tolerate this behavior and have been forced to ban both of you from the store. Our complaints against your husband are listed below and are documented by our video surveillance cameras: 1.. June 15: He took 24 boxes of condoms and randomly put them in other people's carts when they weren't looking. 2.. July 2: Set all the alarm clocks in Housewares to go off at 5-minute intervals. 3.. July 7: He made a trail from a jar of brown gravy on the floor leading to the both the lady’s and men’s restrooms. 4.. July 19: Walked up to an employee and told her in an official voice, 'Code 3 in Housewares. Get on it right away’. This caused the employee to leave her assigned station and receive a reprimand from her Supervisor that in turn resulted with a union grievance, causing management to lose time and costing the company money. 5.. August 4: Went to the Service Desk and tried to put a bag of M&Ms on layaway. 6.. August 14: Moved a 'CAUTION - WET FLOOR' sign to a carpeted area. 7.. August 15: Set up a tent in the camping department and told the children shoppers he'd invite them in if they would bring pillows and blankets from the bedding department to which twenty children obliged. 8.. August 23: When a clerk asked if they could help him he began crying and screamed, 'Why can't you people just leave me alone?' EMTs were called. 9... September 4: Looked right into the security camera and used it as a mirror while he picked his nose. 10. September 10: While handling guns in the hunting department, he asked the clerk where the antidepressants were. 11. October 3: Darted around the store suspiciously while loudly humming the ' Mission Impossible' theme. 12. October 6: In the auto department, he practiced his 'Madonna look' by using different sizes of funnels. 13. October 18: Hid in a clothing rack and when people browsed through, yelled 'PICK ME! PICK ME!' 14. October 21: When an announcement came over the loudspeaker, he assumed a fetal position and screamed 'OH NO! IT'S THOSE VOICES AGAIN!' And last, but not least: 15. October 23: Went into a fitting room, shut the door, waited awhile, then yelled very loudly, 'Hey! There's no toilet paper in here.' One of the clerks passed out.
  3. Hey folks- an odd thing I think I noticed; perhaps somebody can clear it up for me. I'm fairly new to the Venture (just upsized out of a 750 Vulcan last summer) but not to motorbiking. Can somebody tell me; were there optional colors for the wheel rims somewhere along the MKI-MKII line? In the owner manual and in several of the photos I've seen on the site here, it looks like the circumferential rim (except the outer lip and machined spoke faces) is black. A few owners seem to have had theirs powder coated or otherwise painted to match custom paintjobs on their fairings, etc. And then there's mine- the whole wheel (again, excluding the actual machined surfaces) is more of a matte silver finish that looks like what you'd have from beadblasting aluminum. When I took delivery of my 93 in July last year it was quite dirty so I spent a fair amount of time with a 3M wheel on the die grinder trying to clean it up good, but it didn't look like the wheels had ever been black before. Any idears? Just curious- I didn't do any real research on it because I know the fine folks here will answer in short order anyway.
  4. I had a previous thread about this ride, but neither Beth or I knew when we could get vacation. Well, we have a choice to make now: A) Last two weeks of July B) First two weeks of September What do you recommend, and why? Thanks again for everyone's help. gunk:confused24:
  5. well not with motorcycles. but moving up with my PT and moving a little better. i now moved up from snail to turtle. i made it half way around the gym. today with the use of the walker. orthopedic doc said the left knee is in real bad shape and the last operation. back in november 2009 prety much did it in there is verry little cushion. cartlage. left the bone on bone. is makeing the knee cap grind. he agreed to let me keep it untill july. then we talk total replacement. he said he would like it done before next winter. because i need to move that new knee around and in the winter there is verry little room around here to walk and exersize. im just happy i can now stand and move even if its not verry far and i need the use of a walker. where trying to get me back to the use of a cane. i have 2 weddings to attend my daughter in may. and a old friend in july. one i give the daughter away. the other im the best man. he,s a old neighbor from MN just cant figure out why a 72 year old would get married again. and ask me to be his best man/ i think he out lived all of his other neigbors LOL. or could be all the scrap we use to collect and find out we spent more time cleaning that crap. just to make a few$$. but the memories of him and how tough that old bugger is. makes it all worth the while.

My route down is planned but of course open to different sights as the days progress. My route home I will be winging it thru Texas to the ocean then to New Orleans. From there I have no idea yet. Stay safe everyone and I hope to keep checking in.
  9. Hi Guys! I'm headed out to San Antonio, TX this coming weekend for business. Unfortunately, I can't make it a ride this time, but I will be there a couple of days early during the Forth of July weekend. Does anyone have any suggestions regarding things to see or do in the area? Good, clean fun type stuff. I hate to go someplace new, and miss out on opportunities to see cool sites, events, etc. I figure that for the Forth of July, there must be some special celebrations, fireworks, etc. going on. So far, The River Walk is in the plans, but I need some more ideas for Saturday & Sunday. Pete.
  10. Just want to wish all going to Freebird's MD a safe trip. Wish I could be there, but off to California this morning to see my Sister who is battling lung cancer. The bike is all loaded should be out the door in about 10 mins. So all have fun. If everything goes alright I will see some of you at the Hub end of July. John
  11. It was in the lacal paper that a contract has been released for 2 million dollars to cleanup the rock slide on 129, The Dragon. There is also a stipulation of a $6,500 bonus per day for each day finished earlier than July 31, or a penality of $6,500 for each day going over July, 31. RandyA

  13. Hello all, I am soon to be planning my first long ride of this sort. I'll be leaving Toronto, Canada on Sat. July 3rd. and checking into a condo in Las Vegas on Sun July 11th for a week then returning to Toronto for Sun July 25th (Yes this is the time frame as the International Rally, so I will be missing it) I will be riding down on my own, and my wife will be flying down to Las Vegas for the week and I will be on my own for the ride home. I have just purchased a leesurlite tent trailer that I will be towing down for my nightly sleeping while on the road. ( I do not have possession of the trailer yet for any pictures) One of my many questions would be; roads, or sights that would be regretable for me to miss out on. Just looking at the maps it would look like the following States would be the most straight forward route: Michigan Ohio Indiana Illinois Missouri Kansas Colorado New Mexico Arizona Nevada The route home I was hoping to take a different way which may include different States. Any thoughts, suggestions or ideas, would be greatly appreciated as I soon want to start planning my route. Thanks Dave Dogman
  14. The Blue Ridge Park Way July 2009. About eight of us had the opportunity to make the trip. We started at Front Royal Skyline Drive Shenandoah National Park Virginia. Ended up at Cherokee, North Carolina. We stayed at all the Lodges. It's truly one adventure that we will never forget. Two nights at each lodge would be about right. There is so much to do up there. We went with about eight friends and they were great and a lot of fun. If you do get that chance to go, get the Blue Ridge Park Way Book. I know the trip is a little pricey, but it's worth it. *********************************************************************** Sorry for removing the video, Due to an e-mail from youtube saying I could be in trouble with Sony. It's a copyright Issue. (the music) so I removed it for now. I must be interupting their billion dollar industry. It was a cool video. 15. Well, I guess I gotta go to the big city (New York, New York) for 4th of July. Mochalady needs to show up for a wedding on July the 2nd. We plan on flying out of Texas on the 29th-30th of June and fly back home about the 6th-7th of July. If anyone is familiar with the Islip/Babylon area we will need to find a car rental and the best way to get around. The cheapest way in and out is via JFK. I looked at MacArthur and the price just about doubles!! I hope to visit the WTC memorial on the 5th and pretty much stay around Babylon or suburbs the rest of the time. If it was just me I would iron-butt my 1st Gen and have a blast doing it. Thanks in advance folks JB

  17. OK all you Cheeseheads and northern Flatlanders. I have clearance from the tower to have a Maintenance Day at the Estate on July 18th/19th. Wife and daughter will be heading to northern Illinois for a basketball tourny, and that leaves me to my own devices. I know it is kind of short leadtime, but we can pull this together. The VR calendar has been checked and there appears to be no conflicts. What do you say? Anybody up for beer, brats, and wrenches? Fond du Lac, WI - kind of in the middle of everything. Plenty of ground for camping, beer fridge is full (as of now), workshop is fairly clean, garage is ... well, I will need to work on that. Let me know if there is still interest and we will get it set up. RR
  18. Patricia and I are very pleased to announce the birth of our 1st Grandson. His name is Kellon Myrl Mabrey, 8 lbs 7 oz, 21" long, born at 5:57 July 10th. He is a "KEEPER". By the way, he is our first Grandbaby so that make us brand new grandparents. Yeah!!

  20. Hi Looks like we may FINALLY get at least a short break in the weather so I'm planning a solo three day trip that will take me from New Brunswick, through Maine and New Hampshire, into Vermont (July 09). I expect to stay overnight in the Barre/Montpelier/Burlington area, take a ferry across Lake Champlain, circle through the Adirondacks and stay the second night (July 10) in the North Conway area. Return to NB via Hwy 1. This is my tentative route: Trip I don't know much about that part of Vermont so I was wondering if someone can recommend a reasonably economical place to stay between Barre and Burlington? I'll be rolling in fairly late so I want to make arrangements before I go. Also looking for restaurant recommendations and alternate routes that might be worthwhile. I can't really extend the total distance because of time limitations. Thanks Ross
  21. OK - 'fess up! Who was at Big Meadows around noon on July 4? A PA license plate, nice 2nd gen, with a white Goldwing and matching trailer? I left you a little note - Ken

    Rafflebike

The total donations that the Disabled American Veterans collected for rafflebike tickets is $2900!!! The winning ticket was supposed to be drawn on July 4th, but the ticket has a disconnected phone # and no address. You can't even read the name!! Don't know why the guy would make it illegible but he did. So for those of you that bought tickets, the DAV officers have decided that if they can't contact the guy or if he doesn't step forward by the monthly meeting at the post on tuesday July 7th, that they will draw another ticket. So, thank you for the support, and keep your fingers crossed.

  24. I bought a new battery for the 89 today. How do you charge yours when new? I'm going to pour in the acid and let it set for a few hours then charge at 2 amps for a day. My charger should kick back when it's full charged. I was hoping to ride this weekend but the licensee expired on the scoot July 1 and the DMV was closed today.I got to wait till Monday now and I'm going out of town next week.
