  1. Below is a brief description of a circuit modification to the CLASS system wiring to allow the system to be adjusted while the bike is running. This can be done with only removing the faux tank cover. I mentioned doing it in the thread below and a couple of members requested some details on it so I started a new thread detailing it. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=51557 I would like to preface this by saying that caution should be used if you choose to do this. Use care if you adjust air pressure in system while riding. I do not feel it will adversely affect the handling of the bike, but it will distract you. Not anymore than adjusting the CB or radio, but be careful. Yamaha states in the manual to put the bike on the center stand to adjust the air levels. A lot of people do not do this. I prefer to adjust it when sitting on bike so I can adjust ride height so I can see over the windshield. This adjustment varies depending on bike load. On 1st gen bikes with the Class system, there is an extra contact in the ignition switch that is energized only when the key is in the ACCY position. This circuit then goes to the CLASS fuse that is in a separate holder, located on the right side of the fuse panel above the battery. This fuse holder is shown in the first picture. All that is required to energize the CLASS system is to wire in a switch and fuse holder to provide positive 12 volt battery to one side of the CLASS fuse holder. I strongly recommend that you do use a switch on here so as to not power up the CLASS system all the time. I measured the current draw on the CLASS system, it pulls a little under 1/2 amp at rest and 5 amps when the compressor is running. The additional current draw full time on the system is avoidable by using a switch. The 1st gen's are known for having little extra capacity in the charging system as is. The second picture shows a switch with a fuse on the positive side. The blue wire is spliced into the existing CLASS fuse holder on the wire opposite the locking tab on the connector. This is the bottom wire in the first picture. The fused side wire is spliced into an accessible wire that is switched on when the key is in the on position. I used the wire that feeds the Accy block on the fuse panel. I attached this wire before the fuse to the Accy terminals. I did this so as to not overload the Accy fuse. The Accy terminals are energized when the key is in the ON or ACCY position. I mounted the small toggle switch in the fairing side cover. The use of a lighted switch would be helpful to show the system is energized. A lighted switch would also require a wire being run to ground to operate the switch. 16 gauge wire and a 10 amp fuse is sufficient to for this. Also attached is a partial wiring schematic showing this mod. The additional wiring is in the red 'cloud'. This is only a partial schematic, I deleted a lot of the wiring to make it easier to pick out. Complete schematics for 1st gen Ventures are at the thread below. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=42358 Gary
  2. I have a 1989 Venture Royale. My trunk light and emergency flashers don't work. There was some questionable wiring in the trunk by the PO and probably blew the fuse. The schematic shows a fuse in line but I can't find any fuses blown. Is the emergency flasher fuse located somewhere other than the fuse panel?
  3. Was starting bike for the first time and it roared right up. Was going to put it on a couple blocks so I could get a jack underneath to change tire and it flat out died. Nothing. I had taken the saddlebags off and had the wires hanging from the amp and figured I had shorted out a fuse when it died. I mean dead, nothing turns on at all. Checked the fuses and their fine. Any suggestions for my 05RSTD? God Bless. Mike
  4. Several years ago I went to Walmart and picked up a couple of fog/running lights for about $16. I mounted them in the front vents which are useless to me with the lower fairings removed and I really like how well they work. They give a good pattern out to about 100 feet and also give good light down around my feet. Since I have them wired to the battery thru a fuse and switch, if for some reason I blew the main 40 amp fuse, which I did once, I still have lights and I think that is a great safety feature. I also upgraded my MKI headlight to a MKII light assemble and with a PIAA headlight bulb, I actually have pretty good lights for an 83 model. RandyA
  5. For those that are interested I am selling my 83 on Ebay. It has the fuse box upgrade and comes with the headlight upgrade (not installed). I had it painted last year and based on comments I think it looks pretty slick. Has good Metzler 880s on it. Not perfect by any stretch, but should be a good value for someone. Lots of chrome and lights added. If you know someone it should make a great tour bike for a great value for someone. Tried to put it on this site in the classifieds and submitted it twice but it has not shown up. Thanks, Bob

    back up fuse

I blew a fuse for my passing lights, so I had the cover off the fuse box. there is a fuse in there marked "back up fuse" Since I don't have any back up lights, I am wondering what that fuse is connected to. I have the fuse pulled right now and everything still seems to be working Bob
  7. I have a '99 RSTD. The other morning I lost power to the headlight, speedo, and brake light. I found the fuse panel with the 20 amp fuse for the headlight and it looks like it had a big meltdown. I pulled the fuse out with a pair of needle nose pliers ( it was melted and came out in about three pieces). I cleaned up the fuse panel, put another fuse in and all is OK now with the headlight and speedo light but I have no brake light. I changed the bulb and still no luck. Is there a separate fuse block with a fuse for the brake light? The previous owner put a modulator in for the brake light but I don't think that has anything to do with it. Thanks for any help.
  8. Im adding another light to the trailer and as I was hooking it up my running lights on the trailer went out. All lights work on the bike and trailer- except trailer running lights. Just figured I blew a fuse but when checked they all are good. So I got my tester out and there is no power coming out of pigtail for the running lights. I have the trailer light assembly (wiring box) with the extra fuse box. I checked all fuses except main- i know its not that one cuz everything else works. Is it possible I fried something in that trailer wiring block? Anyone have any other ideas? Thanx for the help in advance
  9. I am installing a pair of Powerlets to my bike. The Powerlet comes with a very nice connector to go to the battery, along with an inline fuse. However, I have an auxiliary fuse box under my seat. To hook up the Powerlet, I'd have to cut off the nice professional ends, then add connectors to let it attach to the fuse box. I think I would also cut away the bulky inline fuse. What would you do? Go to the battery or go to the fuse box? Keep the inline fuse, or dump it? 10. I want to add an Accessory fuse block. I have searched the subject but can't find much info. I'm looking for what type of fuse box and relay I'll need and how to wire the relay. Thanks
  11. Any one have any knowledge or documentation on a '93 era Shadow 1100. I have one in the garage that I am working on for a friend. He has a Climbers for it but It does not even give fuse locations. Thanks
  12. I installed a cigarette lighter on my 93 Royale. I inserted an inline fuse between it and the battery connection and used a 30amp mini fuse. Every once in a while it pops the fuse, some times two fuses in a row and then maybe 4 or 5 trips before it blows another fuse. ANy Ideas on how to keep from blowin fuses? Thanks BIG HACK
  13. The passing lamps on my '06 Midnight Venture went out. The fuse is a 10amp/32v glass fuse. Can I use any 10amp glass fuse, i.e. 10a/125v, or does it HAVE to be a 10a/32v?? Thanks,
  14. Is there a fuse that is on only when the bike is running? Would like to add a relay for new HID headlight and wire the relay to come on only after the bike has started.
  15. I have what I believe is the Yamaha lightbar on my '06 Venture. The lights, both of them went out today. Is there a separate fuse for the lightbar?? Thanks,
  16. What would make a rad Fan fuse blow? It wasnt a nice site, Was sync the carbs and I look down and fluid all over the place Went to check the fuse and its blown
  17. 2006 Midnight RSV gave me a bit of a "hello" wake up call waaaay back in the boonies ealier today.. wow.. I was riding with a new rider and he decided to pull over for gas (smaller bike) and I had a quick glance down to see how my levels were holding, a good half tank.. When I turned around to rejoin him at the gas station (it was a surprise stop).. I looked down and huh.. no indications on the instrument panel.. Oh oh.. No turns signals.. wow.. As he was fueling, I did a quick check of what was and wasn't working or showing up on the panel.. Turn signals not working or indication, front - rear brake pedals not working the brake light. High beam light and indicator working, Cruise Control lights working.. But no Neutral light indicator, no clock, odo or speedo info showing up there at all.. it's a blank .. wow.. If you recall I had a miserable time with this bike last summer with the steering locks scissoring my wires to heck.. I wonder if that happened again when I did my u-turn just then.. Huh.. but nothing is down there or near there.. Fuses.. Ok, pull off left panel, and yup. 10A Signal Fuse is blown.. wow.. One fuse, and all of those things won't work on your bike.. I thought that wow.. what a silly way to set things up.. But think about it.. You'd NEVER know your brake lights weren't working.. you 'might' notice your signal lights not indicating on your dash... but you WILL notice if your fuel, speed and odo were missing from the panel.. Mayhaps some brainiac at Yamaha thought this one up as a "hey dopey, your fuse is out" method, or someone accidentally wired it this way and hey look, it made sense.. Now, because of all those problems I had last year, blowing fuses all the time, I had a good stash of fuses with me... but no 10A.. lol... Go figure.. of all the fuses, not the one I needed.. Happily the gas station gave me a couple to make sure I got home OK.. Quick steering stop to steering stop tests and no probs.. NO idea why that fuse blew.. Apart from wiring in a 4W LED driving lights in a week ago.. nothing's changed.. So far the system is working well but man.. what a "oh oh" cold feeling for a second out in the middle of nowhere... time to get some more 10A fuses... just in case.. And how was YOUR day?

    CB woes

Is there a fuse for the CB? The reason I ask is because my CB light will not come on. I have had this bike for 3 yrs. and the CB has never worked. In the past the light has always come on but I never could get past the the "CB-err". It never bothered me because I never used it. Now it does bother me. I just did the Marshall Mod and the dang thing will not even come on. I found in the manual there is an "audio" fuse but the radio works so it can't be that fuse. Any ideas?
  19. I removed the fuse to replace it.(blown) I lost it, does anybody know what size it is? Did I see 5 amp someplace?
  20. Well here goes,This is my first attempt at this. I,ve got a 99RSV 27,000 miles my c/c will come on and give you all three lights but after that the on light stays on but will not even attempt to come on or set. Is there another fuse or could one of my brake or clutch or rear brake switch be bad how could i check it? Any help or info would be super appreciated Thanks
  21. Has anyone else tried these lights on a RSTD? Considering getting the stop lights and LED turn signals. I still had a fuse blow and lost the headlights. I have now disconnected the passing lights and haven't blown a fuse since. Looks like I'll be pulling these and looking for a bare/bad/burnt wire. May replace the passing lights with LEDs also. http://www.customdynamics.com/Yamaha_tail_retro.htm silverdeer
  22. On the 27th of Feb I was honored to participate in a PGR mission for a corrections officer from Monroe Washington who was killed on his motorcycle by a 16 year old who was on her cell phone and not paying attention to her driving. After the memorial I started up by 05 RSTD and....No lights!! I knew it was a blown fuse but I didn't want to pull the cover on the fuse box, replace the fuse, and have it blow again as I tried to head home at night, only 80 miles but it was getting dark. Our ride Captain called Adventure Motorsports in Monroe. They were getting ready to close but would wait until I got there. As soon as I arrived the mechanic (Luke) took the bike into the shop. He diagnosed the problem as a bad connection from the passing lights...corrected it with a quick rewiring, replaced the fuse, threw in a couple of spares because I didn't have ANY spare fuses. I was charged a total of $12.00! This dealership stayed open for me, fixed the problem and got me back on the road in 1/2 hour! My hat is off to Adventure Motorsports. Here is their address and phone number if you ever need help in my part of Washington state. Adventure Motorsports 17321 Tye St SE #A Monroe, WA 98272 Phone: (360) 805-5550 silverdeer
  23. I'm about to install my new passing lamps on my 06 R.S. Venture. Is it ok to pick up the power for the lamps off the power wire to the power outlet (cig lighter) the only thing I use the power outlet for is the GPS. The power outlet will already be fused and I'm wondering if I could eliminate the in line fuse to the lamps... then it would be much easier to get at if the fuse blows.... Terry
  24. Howdy all! I was just going out to start the bike. I turned the key on, and the CMS BIT check went through its normal process. After all checks cleared, I hit the start button everything went off and no start! I checked the fuses on both fuse panels and they're alright. The main fuse is good too. I also checked the other little fuse on the negative side of the battery. The radio works fine, but that seems to be the only thing that works (when ignition switch is on accessory). I have no headlights, turn/hazard lights, tail light or start. The battery is good, I just put it on the battery tender and it already had a full charge. My thoughts are it could be a relay (which one, I don't know) or a CMS. Any ideas?? Thanks.
