  1. I filled up with gas and jumped on the freeway. 15 miles later exited to a major street and just cruised along in the 88 degree sunshine. then my 07 RSV (55k miles) began to sputter. checked the petcock, it's in the down position. coasted to the side and began diagnosis.... pulled the seat, tank side covers. located the fuel lines.pulled the line off the carbs and turned the key. hmmm fuel pump non functional until i tapped on it several times... YES- i tapped! replace tank, connect fuel lines and fire it up. let it idle while putting everything back together. cruised the remaining 40 miles w/o incident..... anyone else had fuel pump problems?????
  2. Say you were running low of fuel so you switch to reserve. You then top off with gas but you forget to switch back to the main tank. Will you have any gas left in the tank if you run out of gas?
  3. Hello all. I hope I can make this question understandable. Here goes... The 2006 RSTD does not have a low fuel light. The final segment of the gase guage blinks and the Fuel trip meter comes on and begins to count up.. When I fill up it generally takes about 3.8-4 gallons when this led segment starts flashing, which would imply that I have 1.3-1.5 gallons of gas left in the tank (the RSTD is 5.3 gallon tank). All of the above is with the fuel petcock in the on position. Now here is the question... Could I keep riding until the engine ran out of gas and then turn the fuel petcock to Reserve and still have fuel left? Or is the Reserve setting just there and the guage is letting me know that I am pulling from the reserve? The manual is not very clear on this.I am going around 150-160 miles before the last segment begins to flash which would imply a cruising range of about 180-190 miles with about .5 gallons remaining if I can still switch to the Reserve setting on the tank. Sorry for the long post but not knowing is just nagging me.
  4. Howdy. I just bought an 06 RSV, 5000 miles. Got in December so I was unable to test ride. Took it on it's first ride this season and it started and idled just fine, cruised around town 30mph fine. But when we went down the highway, and got about 45 or so, she wasn't feeling well. The bike sputtered, lost power, and could barley move itself under power. I tried pulling the choke in/out,had no effect. While going down the road and letting off throttle, it would stall again. I drained old gas, added sea-foam/new gas to tank. Tried again, same result. The other question I had was with the fuel pump. I noticed a few weeks ago while I was playin with the bike in the garage as soon as I turned the key on, I heard something running under the cover below the battery, that sounded like a little air compressor. Since I've tried to ride today, I haven't heard that at all. Should I hear the pump run each time you turn the key on? I plan on changing fuel filter anyway, but wasn't sure if my pump is junk. It always starts and idles great, so I was thinking either the filter or pump was the issue, or the mains on a carb or two is gummed. Thanks in advance for any ideas.... Chad
  5. A couple of weeks ago I sent my seats off to Rick Butlerto do his "Butt Butler" modification to them. Mariner Fan had asked me to let him know how I like them now. We were on the St. Judes ride this weekend. Rode a total of about 1310 miles. 170 on Thursday, 491 on Friday, 220 on Saturday and 430 on Sunday. I can tell you there was a big difference from when we rode Labor Day weekend and put on 900 miles. Neither of us had any pain from tailbone pressure whatsoever. In fact, before we would be ready to stop and rest our butts well before we needed fuel. Now, we rode from fuel stop to fuel stop with no problem and weren't sore after the long days. I would highly recommend this seat mod to anyone looking for more comfort for longer trips. It's well worth the money. My 06 Black Cherry has Midnight seats not pillowtops and we were quite comfortable for all day long. Rick is a pleasure to deal with, turns the seats around very quickly and his price is very reasonable. He has an ad in the classifieds if you're interested. Until having this done we were considering buying a set of pillowtop seats but we both feel we don't need to look into that any longer. Besides, the studs on these seats look cool with the other chrome this bike has on it.
  6. I been having problems with what I think is sticky floats. Tried the seafoam, didn't work. tried running the heck out of it - didn't work. Replaced the set in carb #3 - that one stopped burbing fuel thru the overflow. NOW the others are burbing fuel. I can't believe all four would/could go bad, but I am open for suggestions. Thanks, Bob
  7. If I am not mistaken, and I may be, my 08 RSV is suppose to hold 5.9 gallons of fuel. I think I read in my manual that when the fuel light comes on, I have about 1 gallon of fuel remaining and I will have to switch to reserve pretty soon after the light somes on. It is true that I have to switch to reserve pretty soon after the light comes on. However, when I fill up, it only holds about 4 gallons. If my tank does hold 5.9 gallons, I should have almost 2 gallons of fuel remaining. My question is do you think my fuel light is coming on a little soon or does the tank hold 5.9 gallons and only 5 gallons is usable fuel? Or do I have 1.9 gallons of reserve fuel? I'm a little confused because I was thinking I only have 1 gallon of reserve fuel.
  8. Well the weather was beautiful here in NC today so after doing a bunch of yard work I thought I deserved to take a ride. After about 2 miles I started smelling this very strong gas smell so I pulled over and cut the engins off to see what the problem was. Lo and behold I crawled off and there under the bike was a puddle of gas. No being in the mmod to burn my great little first gen up I let it set for a bit to cool off and headed back home. Again I smelled the gas even stronger now and the bike wasn't running up to it's usual great self. When I got hom I left it outside to let any gas that might still be comeing from where ever it was coming from and for it to cool off before I pulled it into the garage. I was hoping this would eb a really simple find for me like a pin hole in the gas line from the fuel pump up but can life ever be that simple? Well not for me anyway. I pushed it in the garage and put the better halfs cager out side and put it up on the jack so i could get a better look at the situation. I turned the key on and the fuel pump strated pumping but just like always only 2 or 3 clicks and it quit...Shucks foiled again. So I took all the side covers off, the seat off, and the 2 little plastic pieces cover pieces so I could hopefully see where the gas was coming from. I started the ole girl up and here comes the gas but I can't see where it is coming from exactly. It is leaking on top of the rear shock and running down from there but I can't see where it is coming from. Can anyoone give ma any help on what I can to to fix this or if you even know what I am talking about? I haven't had a lick of trouble with this bike since I got it 5 years ago so I guees it's about my time but not being familiar with the mechanics of the bike I am at a loss. I searched the site before I posted this problem in hope of not having to bother any of the tech guru's but didn't find any related threads...they're probably out there I just couldn't find one...So to sum it up in one word....HELP!!!!!! I am going to try and attach pictures of where I am talking about so that it may help you to tell me what I need to do to fix it or what my problem might be.Thanks in advance for any help anyone might be able to give me.
  9. After searching and reading over the searched items on this forum, I didn't find a quick homemade fix of a fuel petcock knob replacement for an '84 Venture. Understanding that most just leave it on reserve and forget about it because: -too awkward to reach while riding anyway -who needs prime when you have a fuel pump -$36 to replace with an OEM plastic one I still would like to make it functional and am thinking of things to thread in the existing petcock, such as a bolt with some kind of flat headed bolt to have enough leverage to be able to turn on occasion. Mine is missing the knob altogether. Metal would hold up better anyway, right? Any thoughts?
  10. After looking at bikes for 8 months and with the warm weather threatening to come, it was time to replace Jan's bike. We looked at Kawasaki Vulcans, Yamaha V-Stars, Suzuki Boulevards, Honda Shadows. Even Bob Myer was helping us in the search. We looked for both new and used but Jan never found the bike she liked until.... On January 28th, we took our son to the MTC to start his mission. After we had said our good-bye's, Jan wasn't in the mood to just go home so I suggested that we stop in at the Lindon Harley-Davidson dealership. The dealership was built using much of it materials from the old Geneva Steel plant that was demolished across the street from their new facility. It is ready pretty neat looking to see all of the old wood, trusses and sheet metal and how it was incorporated in to the new building. While we were there we also looked at a number of the bikes and soon she came to the Sportster. Lance, whom we were chatting with as we looked, suggested that she sit on one (not what you normally want to do in a skirt). That was it! She loved the weight, height and especially and narrow profile of the engine and fuel tank. So, last Saturday, we went back to Timpanogos Harley and purchased a gently used 2008 Harley Sportster Custom. Can you see the smile in the pics? http://i470.photobucket.com/albums/rr70/utadventure/IMG_0024.jpg The bike is 1200 cc, V-Twin, fuel injected, belt driven. It also has a custom paint color that changes depending on the light, windscreen and sissy bar (on order). We plan on adding a JMCB-2300 CB radio so that we can communicate on trips. She says that she doubts she be on the back of my bike much any more. When we left the dealership, we got on the freeway to go home, Jan on the bike and me in the car. After we got on the on ramp, I looked up to see tail lights at the top of the ramp and me at the bottom. I don't think she'll have any problems keeping up. http://i470.photobucket.com/albums/rr70/utadventure/IMG_0022-1.jpg
  11. I usually just lurk, but all of a sudden my 01 RSV decided it wanted to leak fuel through the left airbox. BTW, I changed the plugs, test road it and it was okay. Two days later I ride it and smell gas. Today I start it, turn it off, and fuel comes out of the airbox. Any suggestions? tx, Bob
  12. Well, I'm finally back from Iraq and took the bike out today. Ran fine except for a little overheating... The coolant reservoir showed fine, but when I opened the radiator it was very low. Added some coolant and the bike ran cool. I think there may be a small leak as I noticed a few drops of coolant on my right toe. While returning home, I had a fall off of power, kind of a bogging down when I got off the freeway. had to run it in 2nd to get home and keep the rpms around 4k. When I got home I noticed some fuel leaking in front of the rear wheel. I had that problem when I first got the bike, but can't recall how I fixed it. I also noticed the right rear spark plug wire had come loose and reinstalled it. After restarting the bike, It would try to stall unless I very slowly applied throttle... too fast, it bogged down and died. I pulled off the air cleaner and noticed that the two carb slides on the left side of the bike were stuck open. and I mean stuck. pushing the slide on #1 wouldn't open it at all. #2 would push open but not close back. Noticed some "backfiring" from the right side carbs also I've been searching the forums for about 2 hours now, and I think I'm at the point where I'm imagining everything I read could be the problem. I definitely need to check the diaphragms, and I need to search a bit more about how to drain and clean the bowls. I need to check the tank for rust and water. I'm not really wanting to do a full carb rebuild/cleaning, but worst case I'll mentally prepare for it. Does anyone here have any other Ideas or Input? perhaps a pointer to some good writeups? I do have the service manual and have found a good how-to for the diaphrams so far. Thanks, Mark
  13. I just bought a 83 VR a few weeks ago and have been running through the little problems a 25yr old bike has. Main one was the starter (Wooo Hoo that was fun, twice, rubics starter from hades, lol ) Just finishing off some wiring issues on the accessories that wern't up too par for my liking. Now... Ive looked as best I can but can't seem to find the sending unit for the fuel lv. My guage is up and down with the wind. I count my km's but that flashing red light is making me crazy. All I hear is "fix me...fix me", lol I'm sure it's just a bad ground but Waldo seems to have taken it and gone underground, lol. So.. if anyone has seem Waldo and the ground plz let me know..Thanks Knees In The Breeze
  14. I posted yesterday about a fuel drip from my carbs. Today I went out to run the bike and possibly check out the fuel leak. The bike was running for a couple of minutes when all of a sudden I am getting antifreeze coming from everywhere. It is dripping from the upper and lower hoses as well as the petcock and from behind some of the covers as well as the breather assembly under the carbs. Any ideas or help would be appreciated.
  15. So, a week or so ago I rode the naked venture into town and fueled it up. I hadn't had it on the road before and needed to make sure it was capable of motorating under its own powerization. It works ok, now its time to start painting,,, Anyhoot. In the mean time, the whole house smells of gasoline, and I go out to check on it, and it has lost all the fuel. The tank is bone dry. The concrete isn't wet and it didn't leak out while running, so I am pretty sure it isn't the carbs. Are there any typical leak points on these scoots, or should I figure on removing the tank to repair rust?
  16. This doesn't have anything to do with a bike, other than the fact that I traded my Old wing for a boat this weekend. The boat has got an early '80s model 25 horse johnson on it, and the guy I got it from had just gotten it himself. Therefore other than my test drive, he had never had it in the water. Question is he had no idea what the proper fuel mix should be. He had more than enough oil in the fuel. Does anybody know what the proper fuel to oil ratio should be? Thanks, Joe.
  17. I searched and couldn't find much info on a rebuild kit. I'm still having problems with fuel coming out of the carb vent tube. I looked and it is #3 carb that is "overflowing". Any help would be appreciated. BTW, I have run a little seafoam thru, but didn't want to ride if fuel is dripping out.
  18. Hi all. I just synched my carbs today(first time!!) thanks to the article in the tech section!! And I was wondering if theres any way to check/adjust the Fuel mixture... The reason I ask is it "smells" rich to me at idle, maybe thats normal...I don't know.... Thanks in advance.
  19. take a look at this - http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Yamaha-VENTURE-ROYALE-1300cc-Beautiful_W0QQitemZ140298791821QQihZ004QQcategoryZ6718QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Looks like this bike has an extra tank mounted on a trailer hitch? Anybody ever seen anything like this? Would the fuel pump be able to draw from that tank?
  20. I found that the fuel line that goes from the fuel pump to the carbs. was crushed by the clip that holds the line back by the fuel pump when I was changing out the fuel filter. I tried to trace where this line goes, and followed it up the frame and then it disappeared under the battery box (which I have removed) and could not find the end of it. I would like to replace this line but can't figure where the other end is. Has anyone replaced this line? What's the trick to getting to it short of removing the engine? Why do they make this so hard?!?! I would be greatful for Any help or thoughts on this subject! Earl
  21. I really dont want to remove the tank to do it, but I am sure that the lower part of the tank is full of junk from the last 25 years of it's life. I only had the bike for a year now but I have never opened the reserve valve and dont want to if there is junk in there. And good tips on how to clean all that out and drain it to a bucket? also where is the fuel filter? I cant find it.
  22. I notice my bike is difficult to start after sitting for an extended length of time. If my bike sits for anytime say over 3-4 weeks to several months it seems to be very difficult to start. I let the fuel pump prime the fuel system...usually cycling key 2-3 times. It cranks strong and fast but won't fire. When I persist it will finally go after excess cranking and various throttle and enrichener positioning. I have tried different enrichener and throttle positions but it doesn't seem to make a difference. I have new plugs in. Under normal conditions and in the riding season when using the bike on a regular basis...but not daily....it starts excellent without issues...usually on the first crank when hot and after 3-4 cranks when cold.....and then runs excellent. And then it seems to start best with enrichener full on and a small amount of throttle when cold and just a small amount or no throttle when hot. It seems to me that it's a fuel problem??? Any suggestions?? I have just done the battery cable upgrade and starter internal ground wire modification...but this didn't make any difference to the above issue but am hoping it will help on hot cranking ( i also am noticing the hot cranking problem...but it always starts well when hot despite this). Thanks
  23. same problem, different thread, and different location. if ANYONE has a "fuel petcock assembly" for sale,PLEASE p m me a price and an address. mine has started to "weep" around the gasket, and i have tried everything i can think of to "fix" it. nothing works. just jt
  24. Do the carb bowl gaskets go bad often? Are they o-rings? If so, can they be replaced with bearing-and-seal-store o-rings? Is Buna rubber OK for this use - will it stand up to fuel exposure? Or do I need to get factory ones from Yammy? Suggestions please! Thanks, Jeremy
  25. New to this bike. Just acquired. Been setting for 6 months. Bike won't start normally. Will start and run briefly with starting fluid in carb intakes. Doesn't have 12v. to fuel pump with key in "on" position. Don't have owner's manual, shop manual, etc....nothing to work with. Any troubleshooting tips appreciated. Any leads on wiring diagrams. Location of fuel pump fuze, etc. would be very helpful. tks
