  1. Well I stopped by HD in burlington today looking at new boots. AS I looked around I noticed that they have chrome tips for fenders. I measured a couple and then my fender when I got home and they have a plain chrome fender tip that will fir first gen ventures. Just thought I would share. Shaun
  2. hope this works............jusat checking to see if this front fender guard from an 86 will fit on my 91. Thanks for any help http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&_trksid=p4712.m2000054&item=260646018515&viewitem= DAvid
  3. Looking for the chrome horseshoe shaped accessory on the bottom of the front fairing just above the front fender.
  4. I bought a set of saddlebag rails for my 2000 RSV. It didn't come with directions but are pretty easy to figure. Now what I need to know is this....How do I get the plug out of the holet where the bracket mounts to on the backside of the saddlebag by the fender? Thanks for the help Rick
  5. I need the chrome back fender rails from a RSTD....the ones that the quick release backrest snaps onto. If anyone knows of any please let me know. Thank you......
  6. Some of you may have read my thread about the hit and run Saturday. Now it appears I'm going to need a new fender. If I could save enough to cover the deductable I might try to make the repairs myself. Does anyone know how big of a job to replace the rear fender, right saddle bag support and trunk bucket? What all has to be disassembled? Here are photos of the parts that need to be replaced. www.traynorphoto.com/rockytop Thanks, Dennis

    StarGlide

I finished my StarGlide conversion today. I installed an RSTD rear fender to get rid of all the welded brackets on the RSV fender. I have a chrome fender rack ordered which should be here in the next few days.
  8. For those that have a HF trailer. Per the specs the bed is 40 x 49 inches. Am I correct to assume that it is 40" wide? Can someone that has one give me the total dimension from outside of fender to outside of fender? Has anyone flipped the axle to the top of the springs just to lower the CG? I can not find any car topper that fills all of my needs so I am planning to build one. I will incorporate the wheel wells into the box that I am building. Dang this will be a lot of work between now and MD. Yes I will post pics as soon as there is something to post pics of.
  9. For those of you that have trailer wiring harnes, where did you route all the wires? Did you drill a whole on the rear fender to run then inside the fender or run them some how along the outside of the to the hitch? I bought a plug and play set up that connects under the seat. Thanks

    RSTD ?

I am putting pillow top seats on my RSTD and would like to know for the passanger seat,I put the front bracket on and mounted the seat. Now what type of bracket holds the back part of the seat to secure it to the fender? star4772 :confused24:
  11. Last weekend I had to pull my gas tank off, the first time I had done that. In the process I lost the two gray tabs that hold the rear fender in place not knowing they were there. Well, I found the tabs and am in the process of putting them back in but I'm not sure exactly where they are placed since I didn't remove them myself, they just fell out. I thought they would go in the little metal tabs welded on the back of the gas tank, but then they are too wide to go through the slots in the fender, so now I'm not sure how they go ?
  12. It's time for an update on my Beast: Bodywork progress is slow. Between the 100 degree daytime temperatures :scorched:and the lack of success getting factory pin-striping off, not much forward movement has occurred in the past couple of weeks. Anyone have a sure-fire way to get these stinking decals/pinstripes off , please let me know. I have peeled off the top layer using a pro heat gun. The problem is the adhesive left behind. It gums up sandpaper, gasoline will not budge the stuff, and a grinder takes off too much material. I decided to make changes that will make the bike look more post 2000 and not look like 1985. I am removing or modifying a lot stuff. At this time my color choice is gun-metal gray. I had already removed the front fender bumper and mud-flap. I like a "smoother" look and next removed rear fender mud flap. Then I bobbed the rear fender. The picture below shows how the rear of the bike is developing. You can also see how I am painting the aluminum seals around the saddlebags. I have also removed the bumper and reflector off of the top box and filled 17 holes with fiberglass! Thanks for looking in on my Beast. More to come . . .
  13. Anyone know if all 1st gen front fenders are interchangeable? In particular need to know if an 85 will fit on an 86. Thanks.
  14. Anyone have a RSTD that they soloed out? Do you have pictures. Where did you get the rack for the back fender.
  15. You know the old saying "best to learn from other's mistakes than your own", especially when it comes to bikes. Heading off for a weekend bike trip later today so I had to switch to my normal windscreen instead of the shorty 4" screen.. And I use a magnetic parts dish to hold the screws. Nice rubber coated magnet under the dish, sits nice on the fender etc.. really nice. And strong.. Remember the old motto "The job ain't done till all the tools are away" lol It stayed there on the fender for about 30 minutes this morning as I was riding around before heading out.. Now THAT's what I call a good magnet..
  16. Wife backed into my bike the other day and now I'm looking for a new front fender for my '09 RSTD. Local body shop wants $1100 to fix so thinking I can surely find a used one in good shape. Checked the usual suspects (Pinwall, ebay) and gonna start calling junkyards next. Any other places I should be looking?
  17. Have a 2005 Tour deluxe and need the quick release sissy bar. fender mounts are intack need the rest
  18. Does anyone know what chrome (plastic/ABS?) fender tips would fit my '83 Venture front fender? What more current bike model fender would be comparable in size, curvature, etc.? I need to cover up some paint damage near the tip from a recent paint exchange with a girl's car (I wished she would have looked, & I was more careful that time). Thanks, Doug
  19. A friend and I just bought saddlebag rails for our 2nd Gen Ventures. After installing them they were raised up in the back outside corner as most are. We could fix them by drilling holes in the saddlebag rail just outside the whole that mounts to the rear fender as was done by the previous owner on my 2000MM or I could drill a hole in the fender mount as described in the tech article on this forum. However being an old sheet metal worker I figured all I needed to do was to rotate the flattened end that mounts to the fender. If you clamp the flattened end into a vise you gently pull the the outside back end (the end you want adjusted) in the direction that you want to go. Be careful a little goes a long way. If you adjust to much you run the risk of over bending and will have to bend it back a little or I guess it would be possible to crack the chrome plating although I think you have to twist it quit a bit. Ralph and I did his and my saddlebag rails this way and moved them from just about touching the rear turn signal lights to about 1 1/2"'s from the turn signals. The great part about this is you don't have to drill a hole in anything.
  20. Does anyone know if the RSTD rear fender will fit on an RSV? Thanks.....
  21. I've been busy on ebay looking at getting a few things for my RSTD, kind of to personalize it a bit although I must say the fellow that owned before me must have had similar tastes and hasn't left me much to do. But I love the Star Front Fender Ornament and think it would be a nice addition, the only thing is I will have to drill 2 holes in the front fender. I plan on using a new drill bit and tape the fender off where I will be drilling. Are there any other suggestions to prevent any paint chipping etc from occurring or anything else I need to concern myself with?

    Deer

Last Thursday night while riding home from work, I had the misfortune to try to occupy the same space on the road with a deer. Didn't get hurt too bad, just a sore leg for a couple of days. Bike, not so lucky. Maybe it's just a fender and wind deflector. Front tire might need to be replaced also, fender rubbed pretty hard. All this happened about a mile from home so I was able to ride on home. I wasn't going but about 55 mph when I saw the deer about 100 feet on the left running to my right. It had been raining earlier and the road was still wet. As I hit the brakes, I could feel the rear tire slide, so I knew I couldn't lock up the front or I would be going down. Good thing he wasn't jumping up in the air or it would have been a lot worse. The front tire caught him square in the mid-section and threw him like a ragdoll for about 25 feet. I don't think he even slowed down. I managed to control the stop and remained upright. As I was stopping I heard a swishing sound and thought he had punctured my radiator. Thinking that being the case, I told myself I'd better try to make it on home before "Big Gal" ran hot. As I eased on toward the house I began to smell rubber and realized it wasn't my radiator but the front fender rubbing the tire. Anyway to make a long story short, I asked Carl(MiCarl) to give some kinda figures to give to the insurance company. He did, and for that I am in his debt. Thanks again Carl. I'm suppose to meet with the adjuster tomorrow morning and hash this out. Wish me luck!! I've included a few of the pics. At first thought the left fork was bent, but now not so sure. Is there any way to be sure other than tearing it down? I pulled a string down the centerline of the fork and can't see any noticeable damage. Anyway, I pulled the cover off my Vmax and put it over "Big Gal" . Told "Max" "It just you and me again for awhile, old boy".
  23. Hey guys. Curious as to how I remove the front and rear fender. On the front it looks ok. Have to remove the bracket between the forks and then there are two bolts on each side that bolt into the forks. Is that all I need to remove to get the front fender off? As for the rear fender, I havent even taken a look yet. I'm painting the bike right now. I've already done the saddlebags, trunk, and the left side of the body. I had to buy a replacement piece for the right side so i'm waiting on it to get here. thanks guys!
  24. According to the Clymer's manual to replace the rear shock you have to remove the seat, rear tire and rear fender. Is all this necessary?
  25. Hello Everybody, Shadow here. Can anyone tell me how I can remove or rather drill out a broken tap? It is in the foward rear fender bolt hole. Long story, but the head on the bolt striped when trying very carefully to remove it. So that entailed drilling out the bolt but, my bit did not come out center on the inside of the fender. So I took a tap and slowly with oil proceeded to tap new threads. Almost to the end and the tap breaks. I guess it's case hardened cause drilling it even with new cobalt bits seems futile. I've been at this for most of the day. I can't take the chrome fender rail off because the other bolt holding the fender won't turn. They have the red loctite on them. Funny thing the other side bolt came right out. I know heat would help with the loctite but how do you heat inside the fender without removing the rear wheel or hurting the paint. I just need to know if anyone knows, do they make a better or harder drill bit than the cobalt? I still think drilling the tap out is the best way I just need a drill bit that will cut it. I'm sure I'm not the first one of us to break a tap or easyout that had to be drilled. I appreciate all ideas.
