  1. Ok, I got a fairing to use temporary(midnight fairing on a gray bike, HMMMMM?), so I can fix and paint the boo-boos on my gray RSV fairing (Why do my bikes always seem to take on the Johnny Cash's one piece at a time Cadillac look? ). Some of the scratches are kinda deep, so I'm wondering what sand paper to use and will conventional body filler (aka Bondo) stick to ABS? Will "rattle can" primer work, or is there something special needed for ABS? Guess I gotta be real careful of the pin-stripes, 'cause I bet Yammie is REAL proud of those!!! Once I get the scratches out, I guess there is no hope a Stealership will give up the paint codes, Huh?
  2. factory paint on the ventures or is it better to start all over and paint the whole bike after doing crack repairs on the fairing?
  3. Well, got the Fork seals replaced last week. Not too hard to do, no surprises there. Manual says you need to remove the fairing... I say, No you don't. Just need a couple of special tools, and tada, no fairing removal or handlebars either. did the whole job in about two hours. including cleanup It looked like the oil had never been changed, ever. yuck. So I did Guide, and Slide bushings too. Some new sae 10 Yamalube, and it's all set for another 20 years, hehe, well maybe 5. Anyway, next up, Ride the damn thing. If any one is interested, I'll share my tips for non fairing removal. Oh ya, Found the key code, and had new keys made too. No cheap copies. Key code was easier to find than one might think, but that's for another Thread Later, Kerry
  4. Hey guys- This may have been done. Did a search and didn't see it... so here goes: I wanted an extra 12v outlet on the right of the fairing, because sometimes I want to charge my phone as well as have the GPS (who has a grumpy battery) running.(new GPS has a special cord, so I can't use my USB double charger anymore.) I also removed the casette deck, and made a little storage area. I had a wire coming out of there, and then out from under the fairing... but when I didn't have something plugged in, I didn't like the cable hanging out. So I tried adding a new, easy to change aux plug in case this one fails over time. Started with a black rubber coupling from radioshack, but it didn't work. Use the gold one you see in the pics. it's worth the extra 3 bucks. This was just an experiment, but seems to have worked perfectly and gave me just what I wanted. First, drilled a hole in my beautiful fairing. I drilled too small, and slowly filed the hole more until it had a nice snug fit. However, the final solution would probably work with a hole slightly larger because I came up with a good solution for holding the plug in and waterproofing the opening. I drilled right behind the speaker, so that the plug is facing down when installed. This should eliminate almost all chances of water getting in there: http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg249/screamstone/CA2008/bike%20mods/th_IMG_7390.jpg Then, I put an e-clip around the coupler with a neoprene washer, and put it in the hole from the bottom. If you look close in this pic, you can see both parts. http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg249/screamstone/CA2008/bike%20mods/th_IMG_7403.jpg Next, in the inside, I used another washer, and then a bushing to help me get the e-clip on nice and tight. I was using the grooves in the knurled texture of the coupling as a groove for the clips. I think these were 1/2 inch e-clips... but I brought the coupler in and just figured it out in the hardware store. They have to fit tight. The bushing helped make it easier to put the inside e-clip on with pliers because I had space between the fairing wall and the clip's groove. http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg249/screamstone/CA2008/bike%20mods/th_IMG_7399.jpg Next, I just used a small patch cord to plug in to the aux input of the bike to the coupler. DONE!!!! http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg249/screamstone/CA2008/bike%20mods/th_IMG_7404.jpg Here's how it looks from the bottom of the bike. I really like it because you can't see it unless you kind of squat down and look up. Very inconspicuous. http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg249/screamstone/CA2008/bike%20mods/th_IMG_7400.jpg Since I was there, I looked at this 12v outlet I got from a marine supply warehouse in town. (So I'm assuming it's "weather friendly"). I wanted to add it to the lower right fairing and just tap in to the other 12v outlet. I used a 1" Flat wood bit (the flat kind with a point, if you know what I mean) to drill a hole- but that's slightly too large since I didn't have any washers. Not a problem- it still fits, but I want to add washers to "clean up" the look and keep water from seeping in around the edges. Didn't take many pics at this point, because I just kind of did it on a whim. Here's the outlet installed on the inside: http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg249/screamstone/CA2008/bike%20mods/th_IMG_7406.jpg And here's the front side, with the plug for aux audio supplying all the necessary "Music to mod your bike to" tunes: http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg249/screamstone/CA2008/bike%20mods/th_IMG_7409.jpg I'm really happy with how it turned out. I didn't have a perfect size bit for the lighter outlet, but it's close enough, I can't see light around the lighter with the front of the fairing off. But I plan on installing a washer on both sides (those neoprene big washers) to seal it up and reduce jiggle. It looks great as it is, though!!! Here's a more distant shot so you can see better where the mounts fall in the fairing. http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg249/screamstone/CA2008/bike%20mods/th_IMG_7410.jpg Oh- and here she is with an f4 windshield with vent installed: http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg249/screamstone/CA2008/bike%20mods/th_IMG_7418.jpg This was my first pictoral little tutorial... hope I did it right!! I don't know how to lightbox the images... sorry about the new windows opening!
  5. For those with auxilliary driving/fog lamps......where and how do you have them mounted? I've read several articles on wiring them and I'm ok in that department. What I'm mulling over is where did you mount them? Do you have them mounted to the fairing?, clamped to the engine guards? Did you have to drill holes in the fairing or is there a specific mounting bracket? Any advise is welcome......and as I've so often read here "pics would be better."
  6. next week I get my carbs rebuilt and back tire put on.... then do regular fluid maintenance, rerun a few wires for brakes and turn signals, then at least I can ride a little... then next month I will get my new progress fork springs. I will also get new brake pads next week. This bike sat up for 7 years in a barn before I got it so I didnt really expect the carbs to come clean but was sure hoping so... at least this way I know they will be all they can be. In the mean time my honda v65 sabre will be getting a new fairing. I found an orignal hondaline fairing that orignally came on a sabre my same color. Cant wait for all of it to come together.
  7. Today I removed the old R/R and replaced it with the newer Shindengen Mosfet R/R (www.roadstercycle.com) . The only modification I made is to put it on the left upper side of the fairing, rather than the original location below the left footrest. I removed the old tuner and cassette tape from the left fairing, and will form a lockable storage box from ABS black textured plastic in its place and use the original lockable Yamaha lid and form a piece of ABS plastic to cover the old holes. (Thanks to SaltyDog in AR for the detailed help and description on his modification.) I have attached a couple of photos showing the old/new Regulator Rectifier, and also a picture of the location of the new R/R. The original connector plugs to the stator were pretty nasty, so I cut it off, soldered the wires from the new R/R (yellow wires in photo) to the white stator wires, then put heat shrink tubing on them for good measure. Couple that with an Odyssey PC680MJ gel battery, along with an Argus "Battery Bug" and I am livin' life in "high cotton."
  8. Im new so I guess they are called fairing grills. Im thinking these intake spaces would be a good place for driving/marker lights. After removing the screws, I found something else is holding them. Can somebody tell me how they come out? Thanks ! 1988 VR
  9. Anyone going to Americade next week. I will be there late Wed pm until Fri noon. Hearthstone point campground site 88. Or look for a blue and black RSTD with a blue fairing.
  10. Hi guys, I have removed my carbs off my -'87 VR a few times. Every time I remove the upper left fairing to get to the cables at the Venture Cruise "junction box" and disconnect the "shorties" going to the carbs per the manual. This is a long process. Have I been doing it the hard way? Can the carbs be removed and safely disconnect the cables right at the carbs then yank them up and out the top without swearing? Bottom line , have I been disassmbling the fairing for nothing?
  11. I ordered risers and just now noticed there are some rubber mounts on the handles bars supporting the and cushioning the Fairing? How do the risers install considering those mounts?
  12. Have not posted in a while, but again I am looking for another ride. Needless to say I went and looked at the new 2010 Voyager 1700 and let me tell you it does not even come close to what the RSV is. Sorry to say but that bike was built cheap. The one I looked at the fairing was not even mounted straight. I dont know how many other people have the same thought's but that is my 2 Cents. YOUR THOUGHT'S? Joe, star4772
  13. Looking at adding a fairing to my 05 RSTD. Can get a fairing for a Road King pretty reasonable, but wondering how much modifications its going to take to get it to fit? Any other economical ways to add a fairing? Will probably look to re-use the hardware on the stock windshield to keep it as a quick disconnect fairing.
  14. OK...I printed off Freebird's excellent instructions for splitting the fairing...and then as I was reading over them, I noticed these were published in 2006. I have a 2009 Venture WITH THE LIGHT BAR BRACKET, so I know I won't have to remove my lights...but are there ANY other changes on splitting the fairing from the 2006 models up to the 2009 models? Any MORE tips or things to look out for. I am splitting my fairing so I can install (actually replace), the wiring harness for my Garmin 665 GPS. Anything, TIPS, TOOLS, or WARNINGS would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Wally
  15. Went for a short ride last night and all of a sudden realized my Sirius radio wasn't working, yet it was fine on Saturday when we were out. Anyone have one of these....are they prone to crapping out all of a sudden? It's only a year old. I haven't delved into it yet so not sure if it's the radio or the power source or what. I run the power off the aux power supply in the fairing and that is working so it might be the power convertor itself ... drats!! now I'll have to split the fairing (again) to check it.
  16. Thanks to Freebird for an EXCELLENT pictoral and instructions regarding moving the fairing. I am about to do this myself so I can upgrade my Zumo 660 to the Zumo 665. Again, I appreciate the detailed instructions and I only have a couple of minor questions since the original instructions were written by Freebird in 2006. My first question is the 2 allen bolts size. I think they are 5mm, but I'm not for sure until I get some "ball end" allen wrenches. So are these bolts 5mm? My second question or request is for any additional tips for splitting the fairing or things that I should look for while the fairing is off. Thanks again for the great information. Wally
  17. I have an 84 Venture and it has to go. New bike comming Friday Engine missing starter was a runner. Email me It's in Calgary. lots of parts fairing box of parts to vast to go through .It came with my Venture as a parts source. Don't call It's conditionally Gone Thanks Paul..
  18. I have tried to read every thread related to this. Several members have said that it is possible to repack these bearings without removing the fairing. Any description or tips on how to do this would be very much appreciated. Thanks
  19. Hey Guys! Oh and ladies! The guy could not get the money for ole Blu so I get to keep it! I've been riding and getting used to the bike but one thing still drives me nuts. Every bump I hit causes rattles from the front fairing. I have tried to tighten and secure everything but it is still there. Any insight from the pros? I found that it is much more fun to change the plugs on my gen 1 then it is on a royal touring. Whew!
  20. I hope someone will help looking up a part number. I have an 05 Venture. Sitting on the bike if you look to the left inside of the fairing there are 4 bolts. The top bolt holds goes through the fairing and holds the chrome trim piece on. The next three bolts go in the fairing and I lost all three of them riding this weekend. I went to the parts catalog on the yamaha web site and the fairing is listed under cowling 1 but I can't determine which number is listed for these three bolts. Any help would be appreciated.
  21. I think I finally figured out how to share pic's! Maybe... This is my brother's tour deluxe with fairing. In my opinion it's better looking than my RSV front end. Please work!
  22. just adding this here, i'm looking for a 1st gen mk2 inner right fairing and pocket.. anyone got one laying around ?
  23. Took my bike to Tallahassee Powersports for the 48,000 mile service. Before taking bike to dealer I read the post about cracked tabs in the fairing that hold the windshield on. I have two cracked tabs. I printed the post on here about the cracked tabs and took it with me to the dealer. Dealer just called and said yamaha is going to replace my fairing under warranty but don't know how long it will take to get fairing as it is on back order. Even though it is backordered I am happy. I just knew they were going to call and tell me yamaha wouldn't replace the fairing. I have read many times where dealers and yamaha wouldn't replace items under warranty but I have to say, yamaha has always been good to me. My warranty expires in september so I better get everything I need before then.
  24. After installing risers, I've now rerouted the throttle cables 3 times, and they're still sticking when turned to the right. I also lubed them and it didn't seem to make any difference. For those of you who have been successful in getting the throttle not to stick at all via rerouting, exactly what route do your cables take? They originally went (starting from the left) around the steering neck, inside the front brake line, outside the right vertical bar of the inner fairing frame, and around the outside of the right side of the fork. That's the route shown in the service manual. I tried bringing them inside the inner fairing frame, no luck. I then tried outside the front brake line, still inside the inner fairing frame, and up, coming out by the top right of the triple tree, by the pinch bolts, no luck. So what route works? And for those of you who have purchased longer cables, where did you get them and how much did they cost?
  25. I installed my risers today...pretty nice so far, although I am unable to go out for a spin (due to weather - ice storm). Anyway...regarding the rubber dampers. I got them out...they had them glued (double sided tape) to triple tree and butted up against the fairing...just like everyone said. Once I installed the risers and reinserted the dampers they are no longer touching the triple tree platform...about an inch off of the triple tree. So I was gonna build that section, but to me it looks like the actual pressure point of the dampers is between the handle bars and the fairing itself...the bottom of the damper not contacting the triple tree doesn't matter or am I missing something. Right now the damper is being held VERY FIRMLY between the handlebars and the fairing...isn't that what it is supposed to do? Wally
