  1. No I don't mean road rage or Anti-Government speech. I just changed out my Final drive (aka pumpkin) to a set of V-max gears from Sportmax. Its been raining since I finished so I haven't had a chance for a test ride. But one thing that I have noticed is that the new Pumpkin seems to have about twice the backlash as the factory gears. When I ordered the part I did ask John, the owner of Sportmax, about the backlash and he stated that it would be set to factory spec. I felt like my factory set had a little to much, wasn't sure thought. Now I know that there are several parts of the drive train that contribute to the total amout backlash, and too little backlash is a recipe for problems (heat, gearwear, gearwhine and owner whine). So here's my questions to those who know? 1 - Can you measure the total amount of lash at the tire? ie Mark the tire tread, in gear, measure the total free play. 2 - If so how much free play should there be? Mine measure about two inches with the V-max setup. 3 - Could my factory set of gears been too tight and causing some of the gear whine? I have had the clutch basket changed once with no real good results. I should add that John at Sportmax was very nice and went out of his way to get me the parts quickly. So far he gets an A+ for service.
  2. We have a 2005 Midnight Venture just purchased and am wondering how you folks lift the bike for routine service without a factory center stand? This is our first motorcycle in 19 years and all prior had factory center stands. I have a hydraulic lift table but would like to have a way to have both tires free of the ground. Thanks, Rob
  3. :rotfl: He's going to pick it up tonight, a 2009 red and raven demo bike with 700 miles. That makes 4 of us with 2nd gens at a factory with less than 100 people total! One of the others just joined here a couple weeks ago, I'll work on this guy next. Later, Scooter Bob
  4. I was reading a thread on hear about float's being set to high on venture's from the factory, making them run rich. So if I put on Bub's pipes it will still be ok. But it didn't say if you lower the floats to factory specks. if the Bubs are still still OK with out rejeting??? Or do you need to rejet? 2008 venture. Thank's for the info!
  5. I talked with them yesterday, it seems there was a delay in the order because the factory only runs these big ones so often. 25 should be ready next week.
  6. I can not for the life of me find any place including the factory manual what the Pilot Air Screw Factory Settings are,. I hear so many different story's that there different on each carb. so what were they originally before everybody set them to 2.5 turns out? So does anybody remember or have there note's on each carb number what there settings used to be? Thanks, Jeff
  7. I just drove a 2009 school bus and it had an AM/FM cassette deck installed from the factory. I didn't bring any casssetes to try it out!!!
  8. I thought I saw it on this site some where, but cannot find it. I am trying to find an LED light to replace the 6" x 1" red reflector located above the factory taillight. I have seen a few at JP and Kuryk. but can't seem to find the one I ran across the other day. Anyone? Thanks
  9. I noticed on some photos that the ant. with the little black dohicky half way up is on the left side.My 07 rsv has it on the right side.Every thing seems to work well.Do I need to just change it over, leave it alone or trace it out to radios to see if correct.Could they be on either side from factory and ok as long as they go to the right radio or are they all the same and mine are just wrong.Maybe I am too lazy to trace it out but its hotter than hell outside. thanks in advance Curtis

  11. I appologize up front as this may turn into a lengthy post, but I need advice from you all. Background; I bought my 07 RSTD late last year from a local dealer with a good rep. I was originally looking at a different Yamaha (1300 Tourer) and had fully researched it when I found my RSTD for the same sale price ($8,999). I figure it's late in 08 and they need to get the 07 off the floor so they are offering a great deal. I couldn't pass it up so I got the RSTD. When I was doing my financing, the 'finance guy' offered my an extened warranty that would cover the bike for 48 months after the 12 month factory warranty ran out. I had no clue that the Royal Star was supposed to have a 5 year factory warranty (which I learned later from this site and verified in my owners manual), so I bought the extended warranty. Left that day showing 0000.1 on the odometer none the wiser. Revelation; I figure I don't need the extended warranty so I go to the dealer and tell them the situation expecting them to either give me the money back or credit my account. So after the initial "oh, you only have a 12 month factory warranty... oops, that's a royal star." discussion with one of the finance folks, she admitted that I should not have been sold the extended warranty. :bang head:She also said they would cancel the extended one and credit my account. Great! Says she need to verify paperwork and she'll be back. Problem start; She comes back and tells me that the bike does have a 5 year warranty, but that it's mechanical only. Now there was no mention of this when I bought the bike and I signed no paperwork stating that I was accepting a bike with other than a factory warranty. I explain this to her and want to know why the bike isn't under a full Yamaha factory warranty. I am told that the dealer gets some bikes in from the manufacturer this way and that is why they can sell them at such a good price. She then tells me that she the dealer invoice stated mechanical warranty only. I ask her why I wasn't told this and made to sign something when I bought the bike. Deer in the headlights. I then explained that if I bought the bike assuming I had a full warranty, even if for only the 12 months I was told, and then found out that it was only a 'mechanical warranty' that was not disclosed that they pulled a 'bait and switch'. Deer in the headlights with a heavy oh crap undertone. Work in progress; She told me she would have to look into the file, corner the original finance worker, talk with her boss, blah blah blah. I told her I understood this wouldn't get fixed over night and that it might take a bit to clear up. I also told her that her dealership had a good rep and so did Yamaha and that I fully expect them to take care of me with a full warranty. "Well, I need to talk to Yamaha, blah blah..." but I will get back to you tomorrow or early next week. My thoughts; So I am leaning towards letting them have a chance to work this out. I am not sure if the dealer wants to call the mother ship and tell them they illegally sold a bike, basically putting themselves on report. I figure the 50lb heads need to get together and figure out a solution. Could be, they will warranty the bike for the 5 years for the parts that aren't covered by Yamaha, but I need to make sure I am covered no matter where I take the scooter. Advice; This is where I need your help. Do I give the dealer a couple of days to work this out? Do I call Yamaha customer service first thing tomorrow and intervene before they have a chance? This could mess up the dealer trying to fix it. Is Yamaha Customer service the right place to start if I have to call? Has anyone heard of a 'new' bike being sold with anything other than a factory warranty? And the piece de resistance, what is considered 'mechanical'? Throttle? Forks? Springs? Shocks? Brakes? Again, I appologize for the length, but I needed to get this out.
  12. So you don't have to read all my problems my thoughts on the bazooka amp and speakers and the 6" amplified sub. The speakers by themselves don't sound good at all without the amp and with the amp they need the sub to have some bass. And the system will run down your battery ,need to put on trickle charge if you aren't going to ride except on the weekends, (How do I know? I was going to ride a few min ago and my 3 week old 130.00 gel battery wouldn't crank my bike. so here I am typing while it charges instead of riding) It was fine the first 2 weeks since I rode the bike every few days but last week I didn't crank it Let me first say bazooka's customer service is very good, that being said here is the problems I had , for starters I was going to knock this out in 1 or 2 days and ride that weekend but,got everything took apart run the wiring harness ( dind't get the fuse size called the tech. told me it was a 7.5 amp fuse) installed the amp,and speakers (one of which the surround was glued out of round) per instructions started to hook up the speakers and the terminals on the wiring harness were wrong (for a goldwing) so I changed them to the correct size blade to hook into the factory connectors then turned on the switch only to hear my new speakers sound like they were under water, and not loud as factory , anyway found out one speaker wasn't working traced down that where bazooka spliced the extension on one of the wires was not making a connection thought good now lets hear the music . Then come to find out my amp was bad blowed the 7.5 amp fuse each time I put the fuse in, called bazooka and told them my problems with the amp, speaker, and wiring tried the tech's fixes and they didn't work so emailed them they said the would fed ex'd me new ones. In the meantime I thought I would just hook up the bazooka speakers to the factory system , the factory speakers were louder and sounded better, so after a week of waiting redone everything (and this time got a 30 amp fuse) sounded ok but still a little distorted so I put the bass tube in the trunk and connected it to the amp and it had no bass so back to the email machine was told by the tech that had a reverse polarity on a speaker come to figure out they reversed a wire making the splices ,well fixed that, got bass, closed the trunk and couldn't hear it drilled a hole in the bottom above the cb to let air in and out made it a little better but still not good so butchered up the trunk somemore now it sounds ok setting still and is a little better riding and it still distorts @ full volume still tinkering with that
  13. Guys - This year we want to go to the Grand Canyon in our Z71 and pull our Travel trailer. Problem is, I also want to take the Venture. The only way I see I can do it is by using this http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Motorcycle-Trailer-Lift-Hauler-Carrier-Mighty-Hauler_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZ72Q3a1171Q7c66Q3a2Q7c65Q3a12Q7c39Q3a1Q7c240Q3a1308Q7c301Q3a1Q7c293Q3a2Q7c294Q3a50QQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem3ef4148b42QQitemZ270382959426QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories#ht_1624wt_385 or one like it. I'm told by the mfg. that my hitch needs to be a class 4, I have a Chevy factory hitch and it's most likely a class 3. I don't mind buying a new hitch but was wondering if anybody here has had to deal with this situation. Thanks for any HELP
  14. I got the part # from Yamaha customer relations......My 2000 Venture that was totaled in 2005 had factory CD when bought at dealer new so he got me the # STR-CDCHG-11-00 COOL JerryK
  15. I notice that some have a hard time finding some maintenance items we need for our bikes... OR some are marked up so high that we don't WANT to get them from Yamaha. I've worked in auto parts for the last 30 years so I used that experience to find a few alternatives. They are parts that will fit and are easier to find or they are less expensive than factory but they are all available at either Nissan,Toyota or Honda car dealers. It's only a few numbers now but if I find more I'll add to them. Parts List
  16. I live in Greenwood and have just purchased a 2005 RSTD. It has the BUB slip ons. I have always had Honda bikes and are used to them. I disabled the AIS and it actually made the popping on decel worse. I dont know if I have a vacuum leak somewhere. I know this is a high revving bike, but this bike seems sluggish to me. I am mechanically inclined enough to get myself into trouble. I was just wondering if there was someone around my area that would be willing to look at my bike. If you had a carbtune that would be great also. I am not looking for a handout, I will pay you for your time, but anyone in the area knows there are not any good stealers. Thanks in advance. Zach... Also I was changing the plugs and there were the 7EA plugs in it as supposed to the 8EA. Is there a reason for running a hotter plug than what factory says to?
  17. :detective:I want to install the factory passing lamps but wish to get them off the ignition switch. Relays have been mentioned and I wanted to know why a relay. Couldn't you wire direct to the accessory post and switch them as intended beside the 12 volt plug? Could some one go over the wiring from the start.

    Tune Up Question.

I wanted to ask the sage and wise members of this web site what I should ask for in a tune up for my 2006 Venture? I will have the dealer perform this task for me. While in the shop since I have factory tires still on the bike what would be the suggested brand and size recommended? Thanks in advance for all the information you can provide. Sincerly, Mark:hurts:
  19. I'm considering K&N air filters for my 2008 RSV. Will they help the performance or is it a waste of money. My bike still has the factory exaust.
  20. I finally took the leap and ordered a Hannigan kit. I drop the bike off at the factory in Murray the week before Christmas and pick it up the day after Christmas.
  21. We may be the only VentureRider members there, but we are leaving early tomorrow morning to ride to Marysville, Ohio for the Last Honda Homecoming. As you know the Gold Wing Factory is moving back to Japan. Ron has wanted to go on a tour of the G.W. factory for a long time. There are all kinds of events going on including a light parade. We will be representing the VentureRider's with pride. I will bring back photos. Mama:7_6_3[1]:
