  1. Jennie and I finally got home today from MD after taking a little side trip through Penn. and Maryland. Our thanks to Don and Eileen for another great time and putting up with this crazy bunch yet again. You two are the greatest!!! Even though Don has the shirt for it, he's really not an ASS!! On the contrary, he is one of the best people I've ever met. Jennie said she had the time of her life visiting and meeting this group of people that I've come to know as "Family". We took a good many pics which I'll try to get posted as soon as I can. Right now I just want to go to bed. Tomorrow's a work day!!!
  2. Just some pic's hope they turned out OK. Special thanks to Freebird for opening his home to all of us, Great host.... Thanks Don & Family
  3. --- from far and wide. Here are just a few states represented. If you would like, add your state or province if it is not included. For example, I will add the province of Ontario, which was well represented. Thanks again to Don and Eileen!
  4. For anyone going to MD and wanting a Crusin' for St. Jude t-shirt, I have shipped some up to Don for him to distribute as he see's fit.
  5. Thanks for the hug, Eck. Missing you! Say hi to Konnie. Missed you guys at our meet this weekend. It turned out great...except you and Konnie weren't there. AND Don says thanks for the kick. He loves you too! LOL
  6. Hi Don, I recall you mentioning that there is going to be someone at your MD doing pinstripping, is there a list I should get on to get some stripping touch-up work done?
  7. has Mini been exceptionally good lately? ...Maybe she has turned over a new leaf 0R she is evilly plotting her next move against Don at MD?
  8. As many of you are aware Don (Gunboat) has the early stages of Prostate Cancer. Today is the day that he goes in for his surgery. If you would please keep him in your prayers. I dont often come on and ask for things like this, but Don is one of my very best friends and I love him dearly. Here's hoping for a successful surgery and full recovery.
  9. crockettrider hope you are ok from the storms that hit your town last night. reguards don c.
  10. Ok...so it all started innocently enough. I got a message on Facebook from a lady that said "Hi, you left your name and telephone number with my next door neighbor and asked that she give it to me. You can call me at XXX-XXXX and we can talk. Me: I'm sorry but you obviously have me mistaken with somebody else. I have not given my telephone number out to any ladies. Her: Well, it was Don Nelson and had your number on it. I looked on Facebook and see that you and I have a mutual friend so it must be you. Me: No, I know that it wasn't me because I haven't given my number out and you live in a state a long way from me and I haven't even been to that state in probably 6 years or more. Her: Well, if it wasn't you then how did you know that your number was left with my neighbor? Me: Please go back to your first message to me, the one where you TOLD me that somebody named Don Nelson had left a telephone number with a message to call you. Her: Well it just seems like quite a coincidence that somebody named Don Nelson left his number with my neighbor and then I see that you and I have a mutual friend on Facebook. Me: I have a lot of friends on Facebook from all over the country due to a Motorcycle Group that I am involved with. Some of whom I have met personally and others are just friends from online discussion. Here's an idea. Have you thought about CALLING the number that this person left with your neighbor? Her: Well, you have to admit that it was all a great coincidence. I just called the number and found that it was not you but somebody who lives close by. The funny part is that I am not the Cheryl that he was looking for. So, there was a Don Nelson looking for a different Cheryl and then I got on Facebook and found a different and wrong Don Nelson that I didn't know but was not the same Don Nelson looking for the wrong Cheryl. Me: You are making me dizzy. Sweet dreams. Her: and I'm not even a blonde.
  11. Howie over at the MTA site is digitizing the various publications that the Old Venture Touring Society and later the Motorcycle Touring Association produced. I was browsing recently and encountered this funny story by our own Don Nelson (Freebird). http://www.mtariders.com/magazine/Nov_Dec%2002.pdf (page 14).
  12. Happy St Patty's Day my Friend! Here's to ya Don...
  13. Here is a pic of the fuse panel. What do you think? Bike runs, but no turn signals. Thanks in advance, Don
  14. Don and I want to wish you a very happy birthday today. Hope you have a great day! And many more birthdays! Don and Patti
  15. I just purchased a 4 hour DVD all about rebuilding the 1200/1300 engine. It is based on the VMAX engine but as you know it is the same basic motor. Should anyone want to borrow it I will make it available for shipping costs. Don, maybe you could make this a sticky...
  16. Well I got home from work today and found two Venture rider mugs in the mailbox.. They look great. Thanks Don you done good!
  17. It has been an interesting week for me. Last Friday I flew out to Houston and picked up my new to me 89 VR (Sorry I couldn't hang around for your birthday Don). Today I watched one of my great-nieces join the family business.

  20. Today was the first day of our 10 day vacation...up at 4 am, promising Don I would be ready and out the door by 5...well I was! Unfortunately, the bike decided it didn't want to leave that early... Don had started the bike, pulled it out of the garage with trailer attached and was letting it warm up in the driveway when all of a sudden smoke started billowing out. He starts bending down to see what is causing the smoke when we see oil pouring out the bottom of the bike. Couldn't see exactly where it was coming from because of the running boards on the trike. I begin hollering to turn the bike off cause it's smoking and blowing oil....Don has a flashlight trying to see where the oil is coming from...CHAOS! We end up unloading the gear out of the bike and put it on the trailer to haul to our mechanic / dealer when he opens at 8. Playing the "waiting game" really bites. Don calls our mechanic (his number is on his speed dial) and tells him the problem. Woody promptly thinks it's a joke because Don is being so calm about it!! We are there before they open and Woody finds the problem right off...the oil line to the new gauges has busted open. I think this is the second time. To get us on the road, Woody puts a plug in it and we don't have an oil gauge now. End of story? NOT!! Now we have to go back home (about 30 mile trip) to get the trailer and hook it up again and reload the bike...head back the way we just come...and now his MP3 player quits. Stop at Radio Shack and they trade us for a new one...AGAIN...(this is #3). On the road again...trying to get to Gatlinburg, TN for 2 nights. Stop for lunch and guess how much it comes to? $13.13! LOL! Lucky number right? We finally make it to our hotel...hot and tired. We hit two traffic jams and that is the nice thing about a trike...you don't have to balance it waiting on traffic to move. It was at least 95 out there today, actual temp. but you know what? We MADE IT!! That is twice now that the bike has "quit" working...the morning of a trip...right at home. The last time, just a few weeks ago, it was the fuel pump. Beats having something wrong AFTER you leave home and are on the road, right? Hope y'all have a great day tomorrow. We are!
  21. Well showed up for my first ever Maintenance Day. Pulled into Don's place with my big, heavy trailer wondering what type of reception I would receive. First thing I noticed was a ton of Ventures parked everywhere and people standing everywhere! My girlfriend pointed out the place she wanted us to camp and hopped off to secure it leaving me to negotiate a turnaround! I drove down to the house expecting a turn around and ran right into a dead end with everyone looking. Great, just what I wanted a crowd to critique my turning capabilities with that heavy trailer! Fortunately several Venture riders jumped to my aide and with a lot of encouraging, but conflicting directions, and some pushing and pulling we got her turned around! I did not get a chance to get anyone's name and would have promptly forgot them anyhow but I do want to say a mighty THANK YOU!! The standard reverse that comes with these bikes just sucks and I would have been totally embarrassed without the aide. After camp set up we toured the bikes snapping pictures and got in line for the brake fluid change. Bobby, "Naked Rider" was kind enough to do the maintenance while letting me hold things, get in the way, and ask a lot of redundant questions! Not only was he tolerant but he also supplied me with some DOT4 since I had brought DOT3. Big Thanks, Bobby!! The I was ready for Ken, V7Goose, who was adjusting carb's. For those who have not meet Ken, you will find he is a very personable guy. This "guy" drives 1200 miles to this MD works tirelessly all through the day, puts up with ignorant people, asking all kind of questions, such as myself, and then is rewarded with a 1200 mile trip home! He sync my carbs adjusted my pilot screws, and taught me a little more about my bike. Freebird and I tried to quiz him about getting my AIS system off but he just wasn't biting!! By the way for all of us out there that owe Ken for working on our bikes he does like cigars! I plan on having some for him next MD! Besides the maintenance I finally got to meet some of the people from this website such as Earl "Skydoc". Earl has supplied a lot of us with an upgrade kit for our clutches and he had my correct size spring there. What a great guy he is. Learned a lot about brakes and clutches while talking with him. Then there was "Gunboat" or Don! After reading Don's comments about being a darksider I took the plunge and have not looked back. Enjoyed talking with him immensely! Like him I am fortunate enough to have a daughter, now 18, who still loves to go riding with me! Now that is a blessing!! During our conversation I told Don that a center stand for my bike was on my wish list. He is giving me his! Will not take payment for it just wants me to donate to this site! That is why I am a member here, people with hearts like Don's. Speaking of Don, there is the other Don, "Freebird" our host,! What a classy guy, very humble, feels honored to support us with this fantastic website! I so enjoyed listening to him and Rick Butler tell stories before we left the next day. Big, big Thanks to him and his wife for this shindig!!! I did not get to meet all! There was Carbon One who I had purchased some braces from. I was told he was there but did not catch up to him. (to busy running my mouth!) Did not see "Wanderer" either! I also am sure I have not thanked everyone who helped me out or took the time to say hi. What a great bunch!! For those who have not made the pilgrimage I highly recommend this annual MD. You will learn so much and meet the very best!!
  22. Don finally let me drive the bike, on the way home, pulling the trailer. Woo Hoo!! I actually got it out of 3rd gear. Actually, I got it in 4th AND 5th gear and got it up to 66 mph. Wow! It felt great (after a few minutes of stomach churning and nerves going over the edge). Then there was Don riding behind me and telling me how uncomfortable the passenger seat was. I also didn't realize how much heat comes off the engine on my legs. Will definitely wear long pants and shoes next time I drive. I drove it the last 30 miles to our house and it was quite an experience. I can't wait to drive it to work now...but Don says I have to have more experience before he will let me take it on the highway, which is how I go to work. Will post update when that happens. Anyway..I am in awe of all you female drivers out there. This is great! I was thinking I would just drive it "in case" something happened...but maybe I will look at some bikes. Hmmmmm....
  23. Just got home from our first MD. Had a great time, met a lot of people. Had our bike pinstriped, looks GREAT!! Appreciate the hospitality of Don and Eileen. Hope to make it next year.
  24. What a great time....thank you Don and Eileen...YOU ARE SUCH PERFECT HOSTS.. So many people to talk to and so little time...Taters and I had so many laughs, my side still hurts today....thank you all for making this event so memorable and THANK YOU ALL FOR donating toward Dons gift and Eileen's roses...We covered the cost of both and I handed Don a little extra to take Eileen out for dinner on us ....THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU.
