  1. Go to Youtube - type in 1986 venture carbs. It's the video by jamkitful 1986 VR carburation problem REDUX Ok. Here's a link to the video of the problem with my bike... Dont know if anyone can glean anything from it but ??? I did all the previous tasks that everyone mentioned - tightened the airbox down, made sure there are no leaks, etc. etc. Still the bike runs extremely bad (almost like three cylinders). It wont take throttle (barely). It runs a little better on choke than off choke but still bogs down and eventually dies. I'm starting to think the guy that cleaned the carbs just missed or messed something up?? Either that or maybe it just needs synchronized (though I doubt that would make it runs this bad)? If anyone has any further ideas I can check before I sdend this thing to the scrap heap - I would be appreciative. Thanks again.
  2. Yet again I turn to the experts on this board for help. The problem I'm having is driving me NUTS!! Here goes - 86 Venture 1300. I had an overflow leak from the left front carbuerator the last time I rode my bike. It leaked steadily under power and with the choke on - not idling unchoked. I assumed a "gummed up bowl" on that carb . and because I've never had them cleaned - I decided to pull them and have them done... I took them to a local guy - he has a "ultrasonic" cleaning tank he uses and is a very busy mechanic so I'm hoping his work is not the problem?? I get them back - put them on - hook up the overflow tubes on top, tighten everything down, choke and throttle cables back on, etc - and checked to be sure I didn't miss anything.. It will not run! It will not take throttle at all, it bogs out immediately if trying to give throttle. On choke - it will idle at maybe 1800 RPM's or so but as without choke - as soon as throttle is applied - it bogs out and backfires a little.... and dies. I didn't put the airbox on and I can see the slides moving as it runs. I've taken the bowl drains out and each is full of gas. The carbs are tight to the rubber on the bottom. Everything seems okay! I know sometimes that these Venture's wont run right with the airbox off but I've had mine off numerous times throughout the years and it never made a difference. That's about the only thing I haven't tried to remedy this problem. I do know it ran well, except for the overflowing left front carb when I took them out to be cleaned. I took them apart myself as well hoping to find something obvious, put them back together and back on the bike - same problem! Any advice would be very appreciated. I've had these out three times now and getting pretty fast at it. Pretty tired at it too. Thanks. ahunt2412@yahoo.com
  3. First I would like to say that I have been reading the forums a bit, trying to figure out my problem.. See, my bike (83 XVZ12) was sitting in the shed for almost 2 years. I figured it would be a good time to clean the carbs (something I am not comfortable doing myself.) The man at the shop was very kind and insisted I try to Seafoam it first. So I added almost 16 oz to about 1.5 gallons of gas, ran it for a bit on idle (to clean out the idle circuit) and let it sit for about 2 days, then ran it again. Ran through the entire Seafoam/Gas mixture, added regular gas to the tank, and to me, it runs a little better. One problem It has is that it idle's funny. I start the bike cold with the choke on until it's idleing at 3000 or so RPM, then slide the choke off. If I slide the choke all the way off, it will stall every time. Not sure if that is a feature or a bug, but I adjust the choke to get it to about 1000 RPM idleing. It idle's reasonably smoothly now. Until I try to give it throttle.. When I give it slight throttle, the first thing it wants to do is stall. Often times it does. Giving it very little throttle will drop the RPM to about 5 or 600 before it kicks up.. 1000-2000RPM is sloppy, after that it sounds like a mean machine and the gas seems to work pretty good. I think it's a carb sync issue.. what do you all think? I spent the morning trying to make one of those "home made DIY carb sync" tools with 3/16"ID tubing and connectors, and when I hooked it up, the fluid rushed towards the carbs almost too fast for me to shut the bike off in time. Do you think I just need to get the carbs sync'd? Thanks, Steve
  4. I bought an '83 standard in about 40 pieces, Pretty much everything is there, trying to restore to normal. Choke cable; where does it attach at the carb end. Have and checked manuals but no mention of choke in carb sections or anywhere else, so where? Thanks in advance, Denny
  5. Well, I thought I had this #3 & 4 rich idle issue figured out. I found a bad float needle @ #3. Replaced #3 & 4 needles. Set all floats again...to be sure. This did not fix the issues w/#3 or #4 posted elsewhere. ALSO to be sure my "choke" plungers were absolutely sealing, I used double springs. They were checked under mag glass. ANd I made sure the choke body was good at the seat. No change. Could it be the coasting enricher? And how does is work? And if it's bad ...what are the possible signs? Could this be my cause? Carbs are not foreign to me. But this is a pain....Any further idea or answer are appreciated.

    RSV choke

I'd like to know how many of you have to choke their bike anytime it cools off? It can be in the 90's outside and I still have to pull the choke for a short period before riding. No problem cranking, it just won't idle without the choke until it's warmed up a little. Suggestions?????
  7. I worked on my bike these past few days, and got it ready last night to ride to work today. I started her up and let her idle as I put on helmet and gloves, and put down the garage door. I eased down the driveway, not wanting to wake the cul-de-sac by roaring off. As I approached the intersection, I let off the throttle to listen for popping. (One of the things I did was to re-install the pipes since a faulty joint was a suspect on my popping on decel issue) As I turned and accelerated, she began to hesitate as if out of gas. I know she has gas since I had taken the tank off and had to heft it back. I switched from reserve where I normally run to main, with no help. Finally, she stalled and wouldn't start. I pushed her home, and man am I sweaty! We had fog, so you know it was Houston Humid. I've found she'll start and rough idle with full choke. Try to blip the throttle and she dies. Take off the choke, and she dies. Over the weekend, I took off the tank and side panels. I installed Powerlets on the left side plastic panel where the passenger floorboards mount. Is there something I forgot to hook up? I think I hear a knock when the fuel pump is energized, but not the knock knock knock that happens if she is off for a while. Ideas? Dave

    choke

hello all i have a 1999 rsv when i pull the choke it will not stay on unless i hold it when i let go it gose in any help on where to adj the knob so it will stay out will help i looked but could not find it thanks for the help bumble bee kevin wisor 1999 rsv jax fl
  9. I've been reading about a couple other noises and it got me thinking about my 06 RSTD and the kind of honking noise it makes when its iding higher than normal cold with the choke half on. It has a kind of rythem and is not there once I shut the choke off and its at a normal rpm. Any ideas?
  10. So, got the new (to me) bike here yesterday. Put in new plugs and wires, completely drained the tank, and filled with fresh gas. Started and idled kinda ok. Sprayed carb cleaner on carbs, shafts, linkages, etc. Drained the float bowls, and restarted. Ran a little better. Pulled one of the diaphragms out, looked pretty new actually. Still will not develop power. What I have noticed is with the choke wide open it will idle up around 3,000, and will have some throttle response, but when you push the choke in, it drops to 1,000 and pretty much little throttle response. Some popping and spitting up through the carbs, but, not bad. And the chokes on the passenger side are pretty sticky. I am wondering if this is an indication of bad carbs, and how hard are the carbs to rebuild. I have a fair amount of mechanical expertise with motors, but, to me, rebuilding carbs has always been voodoo, or a black science. I would appreciate any real world experience from others.
  11. I did a valve adjustment and got it all back together and running but now my choke handle will only pull out about a 1/4 inch, not enough to really work. While the carb was off, all I really did to it was spray it with carb cleaner. I did move the pistons in and out with my finger while spraying it. Did I do something wrong? I can't see anything interferring with it on the outside. Any ideas?
  12. Ever since I bought my 99 venture the choke knob will not stay out keeps pulling back. I have to hold the choke knob, not sure if I need to tighten a screw but had the tank off and everything looks ok. Screaming Red:nanner:
  13. My choke cable broke or came loose at the handlebar. I got another cable and I'm about to dive in. Does anyone have any hints that the manual won't tell me? I also noticed a small coolant leak from somewhere near the top of the engine when it is parked. At least now it is warm enough to get in the shop and do it!
  14. I can crank the bike up with full choke and it will warm up fine but with a lot of popping. I push the choke in and it slows down, pops a lot and then cuts off. When I give it gas it will rev up but not hitting on all four cylinders. I have checked the plugs they were just replaced not even 8500 miles ago. The carbs were cleaned also at that same time. I also replaced the fuel pump because it went bad at that same time as well. I have ran sea foam through it also. I am thinking the carbs are out of adjustment real bad. Does anyone have any suggestions on what else might be wrong. My mechanice is 3.5 hours away and I really don't want to have to trailer it all the way down there if I can work on it here at my house in my garage. Thanks for all the help in advance. Robert 'TheKid'
  15. I've checked the post and have not been able to find a tread about this problem. I just bought a 2001 with 4,550 miles on it. When I arrived the previous owner was warming up the Venture. He said it was cold natured and took awhile to warm up. He said he usually would just ride with the choke on until it warmed up. My 2000 Venture if you do have to pull out the choke you just pull it out for a few seconds and then push the choke in and it is fine. This 2001 you have to leave the choke out for 5 minutes or more before you can push it in or the Venture will die. I test drove the Venture before I bought it and it flies on the highway. It runs very strong and smooth. Does anyone have any ideas on what might be the problem? The Venture still has the original tires on it so I'm going to assume it has the original plugs. I'm going to put new plugs in it but I would think that if the plugs had anything to do with it that it would not run so strong or smooth on the highway. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Harry:bang head:
  16. I am in need of a choke cable for my 96 RSTD. If any one has one layin around I will gladly buy it from you. Not having any luck finding one used.
  17. 1986 Venture started great in warmer weather on little to no choke. As time went on it got harder to start. Now it "might" start after turning over for a minute or two and ocassionally backfiring with various choke settings in the start process and eventually starts with no choke. It seems to bog down quit a bit, rpm wise, when choke or gas is used while engine cranks. No gas or choke it cranks quit a bit faster. Once it has finally started it will then re-start instantly, everytime, with maybe one or two turns, all day long, works great, lots of power and with excellent gas mileage. Sit for 12 hours overnight and back to hard start problems. New battery is in top condition and cranks un-choked motor over quickly. New plugs. Tried spraying starter fluid (ether) in carbs after removing air filter which had absolutely no effect. I am suspecting the CDI perhaps ????????? Gerry

    1200 wing

Friend of mine bought a 1200 wing, went through the carbs and had a shop do the same. He says it still has a slight hesitation and the shop says they can't get rid of it either. He says the bike runs great with a little choke?? Any of you have any ideas on what might be going on with his bike? Thanks!
  19. My 1989 Venture Royale seems to be using alot more gas than it should. It seems that I am only getting about 18-20 in town, and 23-25 on the interstate. I dont ride hard, or fast. I have also noticed that even after sitting over night, with cool air temps down in the low 50's to upper 40's I do not have to choke the bike to start it in the mornings. I do not mind not having to choke the bike, but I do want to improve the fuel milage. Any help with this issue would be great. Oh and there is a rattle in the exhaust chamber under the bike. I dont know if that would have any effect on the fuel consumption, but I figured I would include it. Thanks alot!
  20. OK Someone has had to have had this problem....... The Bike runs great if it starts --- That is the problem --- 2006 RSTD 40,000 miles Normal operation ---- I turn the key The Fuel Pump makes at tick about 3 seconds I pull the choke Bike starts I let it warm up while I get my gear on Off I go Problem ---- Let the Bike sit for a week or so I have the battery tender on Battery checks out fine I turn the key plenty of power The Fuel Pump is silent I pull the choke Bike starts --- Barely an idle -- put put put -- I can not give it any throttle or push the choke or it stalls It puts until it I assume it runs the carbs dry then stalls It can take an hour or so until I can get it to run last time this happened I left it alone I had the shop come and pick it up I got on it in the garage turned the key (Habit) Tic Tic Tic the bike started up as soon as he unloaded at the shop and he cant find anything wrong with it I told him keep it and call me in 2 weeks when it wont start What is it that determines if there is pressure in the carbs When I turn the key what happens next ?????? 5 times this has happened I can recreate the problem just let the Bike sit for a week or so. I have put close to 4,000 miles on it this summer as long as I don't let it sit no problem at all
  21. I own a Honda VTX1300 also. Using the choke (really a fuel enricher) fouls plugs rapidly and therefor needs to be used spairingly. I'm curiois about the proper use of the choke on the RSV. It seems to need the choke at first start up when cold but I dont want to foul plugs.
  22. I know I have been away for awhile, but I have a problem with my 2nd gen. I went to start it yesterday and it wouldn't start. It turns over, but will not stay started for more than about 15-20 seconds. I started it at full choke and it seemed fine and then just kind of fizzled out, it seems like a fuel problem. It cranks fine, and turns over fine the 1st couple of trys, but just won't keep the rpm's and when I cut the choke back it dies. I have not had any problems with starting until this and it had only been 1 week since I last rode with no problems. I have about 80 miles on this tank of gas and thinking that it may be the fuel filter or a batch of bad gas. Any ideas?
  23. Just picked up (about a month ago) an 05 Midnight RSV and am LOVING IT!. My first bike was a Yamaha Roadstar Silverado. I bought it about 4 years ago and put on about 35000KM. Took a RSV out on a test ride at Americade last year and got the bug. In the last two weeks or so it has started to back fire when down shifting and when starting cold the choke doesn't always "catch". I have to rev the throttle a little for the choke to catch. I am thinking I need to get the carbs synced but not sure. There is also a gasoline smell when I shut her down or go to start her up....
  24. I was having a problem with keeping the bike running so I took it to the shop. They said they took the carbs off and that they were gummed up. Bike is an 07 with 37K. I did a 6000 mile ride out to Sturgis and back and didn't have any problems until the last day coming home. That morning it didn't want to stay running. I got it running and rode it back home with no more problems. The bike sat for maybe 4 days and I went to go ride and could not get the darn bike to stay running. I pulled the choke out and it would run full choke for a min or two and then cut off. I let it sit for a few hours and then went back out and pulled the choke and got the bike to run high ideal then pushed the choke in and it was running fine. Now the bike has sat for maybe 2 or 3 days and it is doing the same things. I can not keep the bike running with full choke or without choke. Does anyone have any ideas of what might be causeing this. The bike does have K&N filters been on for over a year now, road king pipes been on since 700 miles, AIS has been plugged then unplugged. I have replaced the fuel filter right before the cards got cleaned. I checked the fuel pump it is still pulling a sucktion. All fuel lines are conected and in good condition. I replaced the spark pulgs right before the cards got cleaned. I personal don't know what else could be the issue other than the cards wont tuned correct and the jets are back and not shemmed correct. I am by no means a mechanice but I do know how to do many things by reading our tech forums and the manuals. If anyone can help please speak up. Thanks so much in Advance. Robert 'TheKid'
  25. Well my new to me 84 VR has a little carb trouble. It will start and run on the first click on the choke .Well last night I put berrymans carb cleaner and 2 new gallons of mid grade gas in it.Started the bike up let it run on choke to warm up ,took choke off ran the throttle by hand to get the idle to stay at 1000 on the tach. The bike purred great where or how can I adjust the idle to stay there.I am a good car mechanic but this bike thing is pretty new to me,so pics would be helpful. Thanks
