  1. I have been reading a lot of the threads on leveling links some like them some don't and I can make my own. The problem I'm having at slow speeds an coming to a stop is if I let the front end much past center more like halfway between center and the stop it tries to pull itself all the way over to the stop. This is when i really notice the weight of the bike and what I think nearly caused me to drop it the other day. Took the bike to the dealer right after i bought it an had the front yoke bearings packed an adjusted and asked to have them a little tighter service manger told me he could only tighten them to specs. and explained how over tightening would cause irregular wear on the bearings and it made sense to me. All of this said is this the problem that leveling links will correct or something I have to get use to. In reading some of the other threads V7 Goose had replied that he had a thread on the subject of leveling links but cant find it or figure out the advanced search works to find it.
  2. met about 30 PGR in monahans going to alpine for 911 memorial. they got a beam from the world trade center and going to dedicate it at 2 sunday. three had ventures but hadnt heard of ventureriders
  3. 2 PM this afternoon saw two Ventures, Black Midnight and Silver, at the shopping center at intersection of state road 442 and US-1, later saw them heading north on US-1.
  4. Today I put the bike on the lift and did as Ponch said and put a small piece of rubber on the passenger side of the center stand to stop the stand just about 1/8 inch from hitting my pipes. I then did as some recommended at Freebirds MD and used a grinder to very slowly and precisely grind the tip of my side stand off just a very little. This is to let it pass the center stand. I used a wet rag to keep it cool while doing this, and so not to cause the chrome to come off later. I got it to 1/8" of the center stand to pass. I then sprayed some black gloss paint into the lid of the can and used a twisted piece of paper towel to carefully paint the grind end of the side stand. Once fixed I then put my hydraulic floor jack under the bike while on the lift and raised the bike enough so that I could put the center stand down. Worked great, solid on the lift. I also cut myself a 9 1/4" 2x4 and put it my saddle bag. Very satisfied customer Ponch. Thank you and thanks to all for advise. 5. How do you store mc tires? Do you store them on their side or on the tread? I got a heck of a deal on two Dunlop D-404WWW, so I bought them. They were made in early Dec. 2010 and I won't install them until next fall. They are covered with a tire plastic with elastic in the center to keep it fairly tight. I will not put them in the garage attic due to heat, but will leave them on ground level.
  6. I am about to mount one of Ponch's built center stands and I see a 6" long 3" diameter black tube with a rubber cap on it with a rubber hose running out the end mounted to the angle bracket where I need to mount the stand. First, what is this part and what does it do? Second Is there a relocation mod for this or is this part not necessary? Before I start taking stuff off I would like to know what I am doing before I mess something up. Thanks for any insight I can get... Mongo
  7. There's a lot of threads/posts regarding levelling links including a "how-to" to make them yourself. Rather than adding to any of those, thought I'd just start a new thread due to a specific question. In the how-to, it says to drill the holes at 6 & 5/8 inch center ( 1/4 inch less than stock ). According to that, it should give about a 1" lift which changes the rake & trail of the bike resulting in better handling. I'm wondering (since I haven't read anything related to it) .... what effect a person would get if they set the holes at other positions such as, for example, 6.5 inch center or maybe even 6 & 3/8 inch center? Just curiosity here but I haven't seen any comments that address it.
  8. I'm putting my 89 back together and I've had a slight case of brain fade. I'm not sure how the "special washer" underneath the center cover of the left side cover goes. I'm pretty sure just from looking at it that it goes in the way I show in the attached picture. Is this correct or do I have it backwards?? I've got it in so that the raised lip on the center opening is 'out'. Frank
  9. I changed the antifreeze in my bike. I noticed the bolt in the center of of the painted black piece in between the side covers was missing. It is bolt number 14 on pages SIDE COVER - D11 & D12 of the schematics in the Tech library. If anyone has one lying around I would appreciate your help. I suppose the bolt has been missing since new, or mechanic may have left this bolt out when they changed the clutch basket or new head casket. The bolt really has no affect other than it would stiffen the center mount up some for the side covers. I am funny about stuff like this, the bolt should be there even so. Thanks, Fuzzy ........
  10. I read the old threads and have looked at Rivco's product, just can't part with the $300+. Anyone out there have a center stand they can part with or know of someone that is looking to get rid of one? Thanks Also Semper FI to all other military veterans out there. Happy Armed Forces Day. Mongo
  11. Just Done some research and can not find anything besides Freebirds center stand mod. But he does not make it anymore. I have searched quite some time through the site here and found nothing pertaining to the second gen bike center stand. There is what looks like where a center stand should be on the bike. I suspect that Yamaha or no one else makes this. Does anyone here have a center stand that works for the second gen 2007 ? If so would like to have some info please ? I have one of the center stands that I purchased from someone here. The kind that you put under one side and then jack the bike up from the other and put pin in. Works on my bike stand, but would like a center stand permanent on the bike. Thanks in advance for any and all help. Would a center stand off of a V-Max work ?
  12. Hey gang, The guy I bought the bike off of had the center stand tied up to the frame with a hose clamp. Turned out the spring and triangular shaped bracket were missing. I got the spring, but Yamaha doesn't make the plate anymore. Does someone know where I can get one, or would be kind enough to give me enough specs to make one myself. The center stand is much nicer when you want to work on the bike. Thanks, Phil
  13. I don't know where to post this so this will do. I hope I don't upset anyone. I need an extra set of the rubber/plastic pieces that go on the rear passenger trunk mount. Two of the pieces are the black rubber/plastic passenger arm rest. The left and right piece. The other is the center black rubber/plastic piece in the center of the trunk support. I hope I explained this well enough. I would like to paint them another color for a project I am doing on my bike. Thanks, Harry
  14. It was entertainment night at the Senior Center. Claude the hypnotist exclaimed: "I'm here to put you into a trance; I intend to hypnotize each and every member of the audience." The excitement was almost electric as Claude withdrew a beautiful antique pocket watch from his coat. "I want you each to keep your eye on this antique watch. It's a very special watch. It's been in my family for six generations." He began to swing the watch gently back and forth while quietly chanting, "Watch the watch, watch the watch, watch the watch. .. .." The crowd became mesmerized as the watch swayed back and forth, light gleaming off its polished surface. Hundreds of pairs of eyes followed the swaying watch, until, suddenly, it slipped from the hypnotist's fingers and fell to the floor, breaking into a hundred pieces. "S#&T!" said the Hypnotist. It took three days to clean up the Senior Center. Claude was never invited back to entertain.
  15. I had the bike up on the center stand while working on installing the trailer hitch. The bike is in a little 8x10 storage shed. It has to stay on the side stand in order to fit in the shed. I just backed it up a foot or so an put it on the center stand to work on it. At this point the back end of the bike is sticking out the door. So when I was done working for the night and went to put it back in the shed, I rocked it forward to drop off the center stand, ready to grab the front brake to not continue forward thru the wall, it cam down off of the center stand hard like it always does but this time I had not raised the side stand first..... I bet you see where this is going...... Yup as it plopped down the anti dive did not work cuz the ignition was off, there was still no air in either the front or rear suspension from winter storrage, and it tried to drop really low, but instead it landed on the side stand and caused the bike to lean hard and fast to the right. Did I mention that the right side of the bike is the side up against the wall????? Well it is. It took everything that I had to hold the bike up and not let it tip over and land against the wall, if it had leaned another millimeter, I don't think I could have stopped it. So the moral is, from now on make sure the side stand is up when dropping off the center stand.

    Trade-off?

Well, I've looked and looked, apparently a GL 1800 does not have a cassette player. Dang! Oh, look--- it does have a center stand. Wow. All in good fun folks.
  17. Ok I had been told that if a dealership had repaired second gear problems on an 83 to 85 that they put a center punch mark on the frame by the sticker under the rear brake pedal. Well mine has that punch mark. I called a friend at a yamaha dealership and he did some research and found that yamaha had indeed instructed there dealers to mark the frame in this manner. I will try to get a picture up. Mine is on the top portion of the sticker and the sticker is peeling somewhat away from the punch mark now. Shaun
  18. Hi Quick question for all...I got my 83 VR last year and just love it.. Best Riding bike I've ever had in 30 years of riding. No 2nd gear problems yet with 28,000 However I for the life of me cannot get it up on it's center stand.. I'm 6:4 230 and fairly strong. I've also had a buddy of mine who has ridden for years and is an instructor for the MSF try as well... the 2 of us could hardly get it up. He said he has never had difficulty like that either. Is there some trick I'm missing on this particular bike or is that a problem others have had as well? Just curious? Thanks, Clay
  19. I was so depressed last night thinking about the economy, wars, jobs, my savings, Social Security, retirement funds, and our bleak future, that I called the Suicide Lifeline and was connected to a call center in Pakistan . When I told them I was suicidal, they got all excited, and asked if I could drive a truck.
  20. I have placed a set of Shogun turn out exhaust slip ons and chrome center stand in the classifieds. these are for a second gen. there are pic's. Both items have been sold.
  21. Hi all, I have a 2000 venture with a couple small dents in the tank. How they got there is beyond me? The first dent is about 1" away from the center black strip edge running down the middle of the tank. The second small dent is about 2" away from the center strip edge. The dents are located on the right hand side of the tank maybe 10" up from the seat. My questions are, is there a bib available? or would a tank bib from a tour deluxe work? Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks
  22. With all the talk of building trailers it got my giddyup goin so a question for ya'll. I plan to build a trailer similar to the aluma, the construction of it is going to be pretty straigt forward. My question is about rubber torsion axels. When I calculate where the axle will go I know the 60/40 rule applys but do I center the wheel hub or the rubber flexi part on that line or split the difference? Retarded mind want to know, lol
  23. I recently purchased a Rivco Center Stand for my Venture. The install was pretty simple and all was well until one morning last week I had a hell of a time getting the bike off the stand, it just kept sliding on the garage floor. Never, ever had a problem putting it on the stand or taking it off before. Now the only way I can get the bike off the stand is to jack it up and take stand off. Any suggestions:icon_smile_question
  24. Ok I know there is some kind of trick to getting the bike up on the center stand...so what is it? I feel like such an idiot for not being able to figure out how to get the bike on the center stand. Does the side stand have to be up?
  25. I'm going to be needing a center stand for my bike when I get my 2nd Gen. Is anyone here still offering one, or have one for sale?
