  1. I watched one of our mechanic's doing a plastic repair today and thought I would share it ! I have never seen it done before.....he clipped the end off a hose clamp.....heated it red hot with a torch and then embedded it into the plastic piece that was broken......see pic below. Not a repair you would do that can be seen but I'm sure someone may be able to make use of it somewhere. The picture is of a bench grinder shield arm. Keith
  2. My riding season was cut short last Saturday in Woodstock, Illinois by a 71 yr old cager that didnt see me. The accident happened on Illinois 176 in Woodstock. How he didnt see me is a mystery even to the police. I was heading east and he was heading west. He went to turn left and caught the back end of my Venture which apparently caused me to wabble before launching me into the air and onto the pavement. I do not remember a thing from the night before through the following afternoon. Injuries to me were a broken collar bone, broken rib, bruised lung,7 staples to the right side of my head, severe concussion, bruised hip and a whole lotta road rash. Lucky to be alive as I was not wearing a helmet. Damage to bike is unknown right now. It was towed to a shop today for an estimate. I can only be thankful that I was alone on that ride. Hope to be healed and riding again by the fall. Stay safe and enjoy the summer everyone. I'll catch up with y'all down the road. Kevin
  3. On the way back from my SC last weekend, I stopped for gas, when I started to get back on the road, I had no power. Assuming that I had a blowed fuse, I started taking the bike apart to check fuses. After 1.5 hour in the 99 degree weather, I found the problem to be a broken ground battery cable. What broke was the flat metal at the bend next to where it connects to the battery. Wedged the broken piece under lugs and tighten down. Picked up a new end at the shop yesterday. Will anyone tell me the "best" way to get the cable off so I can put the new connector on. I would reckon it is ground to the engine block "SOMEWHERE?". Thanks, MIKE aka Uturn
  4. Anyone have a work-around for a broken torsion spring - it returns the brake pedal to position (if it isn't broken like mine!)? The spring is no longer available from Yamaha and I am growing weary of having to lift the pedal with my toe to stop the rear brake from activating. Any ideas?
  5. I have a working radio now but most of the buttons are gone. Maybe you have a broken radio with all of the buttons and I can make one good radio out of two.
  6. Someone on eBay was looking for an '83 parts bike per link at bottom of forum to ‘86 Venture. Can't contact that person through eBay site but it just so happens that I have one. Maybe someone knows the person. Bike is a 1983 plain Venture with 74,000 kilometers (about 46,000 miles). I was planning to restore it but have decided that I am parting this bike out or may sell as complete unit. Mechanical: This bike is complete and everything works. I haven't taken anything apart as prospective buyer may want to hear it run etc. The motor starts right up and runs strong but does need a tune up. Bike runs through all gears well. 2nd gear seems good even under acceleration (can't tell if repaired). Clutch is good. Battery is new this spring (but can't be shipped). Frame looks good. Suspension still held air. Wheels spin true. Rear-end final drive appears sound. Tires are worn. The wiring harness is intact and complete. Good radiator and cooling system looks OK. Instrument cluster is fully operative but lens cover is cracked. All chrome parts are dull and aluminum surfaces are weathered. Sorry, I need the exhaust crossover. Mufflers are rotted out. Brake controls are operating but need new pads. There is a brand new ignition switch with keys. Body: All three pieces of luggage are complete and have no cracks. One bag has small chip on backside. Upper fairing is complete but left side has a couple of broken tabs with a clean crack on underside that can be easily repaired. If requested, I can repair same to customer's satisfaction. Left lower fairing is cracked. Left inner fairing is broken. Both left and right consoles are badly broken containing Alpine car radio as replacement (assume as junk). As this bike is a plain Venture it lacks CLASS system and CB. All lights and lens are intact. The chrome center of left-side cover is marked from shifter. Chrome on both mirrors is marked on outside edge. Have both single and rocker type shifters. Frames for driver running-boards need re-chroming or painting. Passenger pegs. No engine guards. Gas cover has missing lock. The engine can only be sold as complete unit including tranny. A full set of photos are available for interested parties. Best offers decide.
  7. Went to work installing my mic cable that I built into the fairing today. I noticed the windshield is moving more than usual. Found the metal mounting strip is broken out of the yoke in the fairing. So it has 2700 miles and has already broken 2 different pieces. I also did the rear end pin lube the other day. It has warranty so I am hoping the dealer will fix the tab issue. I don't think I should be having this much trouble. The middle bolts were never installed... It had a zip tie there in place of one of the bolts. Do they have monkeys putting these things together? Wondering if I bought the wrong bike? Frank
  8. There seems to be an issue with the search function. Just tried to search for Skydoc and then myself to no avail.
  9. Does anyone have a louver from a broken Heater Vent Grill they could spare?
  10. Ok first the good...built my bracket and harness for the stebel airhorn. Works great and since I had it and the aluminum stock laying around it cost zero dollars. Now the BAD. I attacked the job of splitting the fairing yesterday to find the previous owner had glued the chrome windshield mole on because one of the end tabs was broken. I see no choice but to buy it and it looks like 140 bucks or so! crappy design! Also I see that my windshield retaining strip like some others on here was assembled and the 2 center bolts left out. It's under warranty but with the broken chrome I am sure this will somehow be my fault. The whole thing makes me sick... anyone ever have to have stuff like that handled under warranty? It also looks like there may be some seeping around the rear diff mounting flange. On the plus side... we did go for a 120 mile ride today... I was staring at the tape holding the chrome on the whole time :-( Frank
  11. Last fall I posted here that I was selling my bikes, but then came fall - winter and , well , you know how it goes... We park the Jeep in the driveway (because the garage is filled by 2 1st Gen bikes) and this week the Jeep was broken into and everything was rifled thru. It turns out that many of the cars on the block were broken into as well. Since I travel for my job and my wonderful wife is home alone - she is a bit upset (to say the least). Now the bikes really have to go. Make a serious reasonable offer and take them home with you. I'm in Winnipeg MB right now, but when I get home this weekend I'll post pics (after going to buy and install a motion sensor security light).

    good if true

I don't know if this is true but it is good none the less. Augusta, GA A heart-warming story. We need to hear of more similar stories Orville Smith, a store manager for Best Buys in Augusta, Georgia , told police he observed a male customer, later identified as Tyrone Jackson of Augusta , on surveillance cameras putting a laptop computer under his jacket. When confronted the man became irate, knocked down an employee, drew a knife and ran for the door. Outside on the sidewalk were four Marines collecting toys for the "Toys for Tots" program. Smith said the Marines stopped the man, but he stabbed one of the Marines, Cpl. Phillip Duggan, in the back, the injury did not appear to be severe. After Police and an ambulance arrived at the scene Cpl. Duggan was transported for treatment. The subject was also transported to the local hospital with two broken arms, a broken ankle, a broken leg, several missing teeth, possible broken ribs, multiple contusions, assorted lacerations, a broken nose and a broken jaw...injuries he sustained when he slipped and fell off of the curb after stabbing the Marine. 13. i had the day off today so i thought id put my new trailer togeather; things started out good i took out the shell top and bottom set them on the lawn and went back took the fenders out and set them aside; now i started to asemble the trailer this went very quick with out even looking in the book almost done and i see a small inch and a half pice of black plastic in the box now im thinking the worst as i pick up my fenders and look for the broken one and there both still good well back to tighting all the bolts i have in the trailer and i go in the house to get a soda. on my way back out the door i see some dirt on my cover to the box OH NO its not dirt its a HOLE broken so i call harbor freight and they are very nice and looking up part #s for me and getting me a new shell lid and when talking to them i look at the bottom and its not broken but the corner is crushed in well now the trailer is done and im waiting for the new shell for it SHHHEEEESSSSSSSS just cant win some days now the good news is in two weeks ill have TWO not ONE but 2 trailers for my lill scooter and you get pics when done Dray
  14. The Bad this week: Wife rear-ended in daughter's car (sore neck) Accidentally paid off credit card (-$3500) (clicked pay balance instead of make payment) Car broken in to (iPad stolen/window broken) The good this week: No damage to daughter's car Less debt No one hurt when wife's car was broken in to All in all, they were just possessions...we still have our health and faith, but are glad that the series of three's is done! Hopefully we are in for some good luck now!
  15. If you live near Augusta and this isn't true, keep it to yourself. This makes my day! Guys ought to be more careful when they're running with knives . . . Maybe if he'd not accidently stabbed that Cpl, the Marines might not have chased him and he wouldn't have fallen. Funny how things like that--unintended consequences--happen, isn't it? Also, I think we have a new definition for "loser." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ AUGUSTA, Ga. - A U.S. Marine reservist collecting toys for children was stabbed when he helped stop a suspected shoplifter in eastern Georgia. Best Buy sales manager Orvin Smith told The Augusta Chronicle that the man was seen on surveillance cameras Friday putting a laptop under his jacket at the Augusta store. When confronted, the man became irate, knocked down an employee, pulled a knife and ran toward the door. Outside were four Marines collecting toys for the service branch's "Toys For Tots" program. Smith said the Marines stopped the man, but he stabbed one of them, Cpl. Phillip Duggan, in the back. The cut did not appear to be severe. The suspect was transported to the local hospital with two broken arms, a broken leg, possible broken ribs, assorted lacerations and bruises he obtained when he fell trying to run after stabbing the Marine. The suspect, whose name was not released, was held until police arrived. The Richmond County Sheriff's office said it is investigating. And the investigators found out it happened just like the Marines said. Must have been a nasty fall! Semper Fi
  16. About time we start taking our lives back! The politicions sure don"t care!!!!! P.s.my feelings only!!! Subject: Marine Stabbed at Best Buy by suspected shoplifter! 17. Can someone direct me to a 'How To' guide on the removal/installation of a speedo cable? I've removed the windshield and headlight assy. and can touch the connection point with one finger but can't for the life of me figure out how to route the cable and then attach it. Do I need to do more dis-assembly? On a related topic, I noticed that all the rubber holders for the relays behind the headlight have dry rotted and broken. Anyone have a suggestion for making repairs. Might not hurt anything the way they are, but I sure don't want 'em bangin' around in there...
  18. Anyone ever have this issue? See pics. What's odd is that the DEALER (who remains nameless at this point) said he replaced the complete INNER FAIRING piece about 6 weeks ago (under warranty) to resolve the exact same issue. I cracked the fairing to replace a stereo cable...and low and behold...the windshield bracket-to-inner-fairing mounts are completely broken. Thoughts? Is this a COMMON issue that all RSVs have? Or am I just "lucky"?
  19. I split the fairing yesterday for the first time to install Mic Mutes. When I went to remove the windshield I found three of the six tabs on the outer fairing were broken. Does anyone have a fix for that?
  20. Yesterday I got my MC jack modified to fit under my RSV, so today I decided to start the process of lowering the front forks and adjusting the steering bearing. When I got the front shell of the fairing one of the six bolt appeares to have the end of an allen wrench broken off in it. So I thought I could just drill it out. Nope! The broken allen head is to hard to drill. I then thought I could use my dremel and grind a slot for a screw driver but the bolt is the lower right and recessed into the fairing so the cutting wheel will not fit. So here I am look for help:8: on how to get the bolt out. Oh ya the bike has a light bar. Whats the trick on getting to the bolts? They are too close to the fairing to get to.
  21. Today...I noticed that the windshield on my 08 RSV was a little "loose". So I pulled the top fairing screws and removed the chrome trim. Now I can see why the windshield was loose! Missing 2 screws COMPLETLY and 3 screws just about ready to fall out. The screw that mounts in the hole in thw windshield is one of the screws that is MIA. Closed inspection reveals that screw hole in the fairing is completely broken off. (insert swear word here). Since it looks like the screws may have fallen inside the fairing, I decide to crack the fairing to look for the screws. The GOOD...I found one of the screws. The BAD??? The crossmember that the windshield screws actually attach to is held in place by a frickin' TIE WRAP! The bolt holes that SHOULD be used for mounting the windshield crossmember are rusty...which means that the two flange bolts where never installed. Worse yet, where the windshield crossmembers connects to the inner fairing, those are completely broken off as well. AND...two of the tabs on the Chrome Trim are broken.... The dealer I bought the bike from went out of business several months ago, and the dealer I'm currently has already replaced the turnk lid and left lower fairing due to cracks and broken pieces. He's gonna have a stroke..cause now he will have to replace the entire fairing (both inner and outer). Has anyone else encountered these types of issues? I know that the bike is still under warranty, but I'm pretty sure the dealer is going to question how these things got broken. Do you think these "failures" are due to Yamaha "engineering" or the fault of the 16-year old mechanic making $8 bucks an hour to uncrate and assemble these bikes at the dealership?? Me...I'm on the fence!
  22. A friend Jim Long of Decorah was hit in Decorah on Monday. Jim has been riding for many years and is a skilled rider . Jim was turning on to a street and was hit by a van. The strange thing is the van had only a half block run at him and the damage and injury were great. I just found out today his injuries Fractured skull, broken neck, broken ribs, punctured lung, and a broken back. He has been put into a coma because of pain. We don't know the whole story as of today only one side of it the police are investigating it. This is the article in paper not much news. The Decorah Police Department is seeking information from anyone who witnessed an accident involving a motorcycle and van Monday at about 12:50 p.m. at the intersection of River Street and Day Spring Lane in Decorah. According to Police, James E. Long, 64, Decorah, was driving his motorcycle when it collided with a vehicle driven by Hyon Lee, 51, Decorah. Long was taken to Winneshiek Medical Center by ambulance, then transferred to St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn. Lee was not injured. Long was listed in serious condition Tuesday afternoon at St. Mary's. An investigation is continuing. Anyone with more information regarding the accident should call Assistant Police Chief Bill Nixon at 382-3667.
  23. When I was young :rotfl:I could remember my dad saying your engine is not broken in until you reach 60,000 miles and then you other bikers say geez you r scoot bearly broken with 55,000 miles. So you smart A**** out there, when is an engine broken in And What is broken in (the rings settling in I guess)
  24. yesterday while out on a ride with my dad brother in law and a friend a young lady felt the need to pass the car in front of her without checking for on coming traffic. with less than 30 yards between us she hit me dead center of my front tire launching me over her nissan maxima. i was going roughly 50 mph her closer to 60. i cant be sure but i would bet she was on her cell phone. i was takeenn by helicopter to the medical university of south carolina where i've had surgery on both my arms to fix breaks fractures an dislocations. other than my arms, there is not a scratch on me. the Lord was riding 2 up with me yesterday. my dad suffered a broken ankle and the loss of his treasured harley. my mom who was riding with him walked away with just a sprained knee. my brother in law has a broken wrist and minor internal bleeding. its not known yet if his honda cbr is totaled tho it more than likely is. my friend went down but was able to ride his bike for a check_up. my 2004 midnight rsv is a total loss. when i asked what it looked like my father in law said it looked like somebody had died on it. the only parts that i could get off it were the trailer hitch and gps. thank you very much for all the thoughts and prayers and hopefully ya'll will accept me in a cage at the meet in eats until i can get two wheels under me. the doctors are saying 6 weeks minimum until i have the use of my arms. God Bless everyone an stay safe out there. Ben (Gamecock)
