  1. Too bad the ride is Sept. 8th or I would ride out and go on it but it is our annual shutdown at work and can't be gone.Sorry to hear about the deer incedent. On my ride to work everyday I leave home at 5:00 A.M. and it is still pretty dark out and as someone else mentioned the unmowed ditches, tall corn and the darkness make it a bit scarry at times when one or a few deer run out or are just standing by the road cause you don't know what they will do.Part of the reason when I go to work I got the stereo on a good rock station and crank the volume up to at least 22.
  2. Loose gravel GRRRRRRR!!!!!! I live in good old Nebraska where maintaining the asphalt roads consists of oiling the heck out of them then spreading loose gravel or sand on the oil.Talk about fun to ride on.Meeting cars and getting pelted with gravel is bad enough but then meet a semi blasting down the road going 60 or faster and you are getting sandblasted and so is your bike.
  3. Many years ago I had borrowed my cousins 77 Honda CB360 and was riding in Missouri which had a helmet law when nebraska didn't.But anyway on the way home I felt something hit my face by the corner of my right eye.Little did I know that it glanced off and ended up between my temple and the helmet and it was stinging the hell out of me so I pull over quick and whatever it was it flew off.Lucky for me I was only about 20 or so miles from home.I took off for home I was only 16 at the time and I could feel that ny eye was swelling shut.By the time I got home my eye was completely swollen shut and I was beginning to have difficulty breathing and in a matter of minutes after walking in the house my airway had swollen so much that I dropped to the floor unconcious and had to be taken to the hospital.I had been stung many times before with no problems but that time I had a very bad reaction.
  4. I got Pirelli route 66 tires on my 01 RSV and absolutely Love them, they corner great ,tar snakes don't bother them a bit and I can ride on a milled surface and can barely tell it,they handle good in rain.Only thing is I only got maybe 3,000 on the back one and 1,000 on the front but both show hardly any wear yet.
  5. I am a member and have been for a few years and I consider it an honor to be invited to escort our fallen heros by their families. Some of the missions or should I say all of them have been very moving to say the least. The last one was for a young Marine killed by sniper fire.It was in York,Nebraska and it was over 100 degrees that day. Many neighbors of the church were handing out bottled water to us all.The publics actions were unbelievable.
  6. Glad to hear you made it out Ok.I know the feeling well.Had a few real close ones myself.Plus being older I think we seem to realize our mortality more than when we were younger and thought we were indestructible.
  7. Maybe after you get back we can plan to meet halfway somewhere and go for a ride andchat a while whatever.
  8. I agree with you completely.Got to keep those lines of communication open with your kids.We always told our son to be honest with us and don't be afraid to tell us anything or ask anything.Plus I have always told him I will Never tell you a lie.I told him some of my past mistakes and experiences I had and so far it has worked fine. His senior year in high school he admitted he wanted to go to a drinking party and together we came up with a mutual decision that he not go.He fessed up a few years later that he had tried smoking pot but did not like it.We have a special father son relationship. He and I are buddies and riding together has helped us.He would never end a conversation on the phone without saying I Love you Dad and I always reply with I Love you too buddy. The guys at work used to give me crap about it saying stuff like OHH isn't that sweet saying that to a 22 year old,and I just say yes it is isn't it.When was the last time your kid said I Love You.That shut them up.
  9. I always look behind me at a light and plan an escape route forward just in case. Many years ago I was in my car stopped at a red light in the left lane and a bike pulls up in the right lane beside me.I happened to look in my rear view mirror and saw a truck coming in his lane and was not slowing down, speed limit was 50 mph on this road.Everything seemed to be in slow motion and I honked my horn and yelled at the biker and motioned for him to go through the light but he did not understand why I was doing this and the truck hit him as he looked at me like I was nuts. The truck never hit his brakes till he hit the bike. The biker was killed instantly right beside me and I will never forget that as long as I live. The truck driver had dropped a cigarrette on the floor and was trying to pick it up.
  10. Hi everyone.I have had it with people tailgating me on my bike.I have actually had some so close all I could see was the hood of the car.But I finally found a way to get them to back off.May sound kinda gross to some of you but I have done it three times now and each time it has worked.I just kinda flip my head back and sideways a bit as I spit over my shoulder.Don't know if it is actually hitting the windshield or they see me and realize what I am doing ,but all three times I have done it they back off real quick and one even flipped me the bird as I pulled into the turn lane as they passed me.I may survive going down but I really don't want to be run over by a car following too close if I do go down.
  11. Come on everyone please don't make fun of my mistress!!! Ha Ha.
  12. Hi ,everyone.Got some bad news this week. One of my sons elementary school teachers who had retired was killed last Monday on I-80 near Grand Island,Nebraska by a total idiot making a U-turn on the interstate. Her and her husband were riding seperately she was on an 08 Harley and he was on a 2012 Harley. She was following him and they were in the left passing lane and car was in right driving lane. They were passing the car and the car driver decided to make a sudden u-turn from the right lane and it hit the husbands bike on the rear wheel but he was able to keep it up somehow, then his wife ended up hitting the car in the side and she was thrown off and killed.Person driving had 4 kids in the car and no one in seat belts and she had no proof of insurance and had warrants out for driving offenses. She is up for motor vehicle homicide. Please remember her in your prayers and her husband.

    WHEW!!!

It was 113 in McCook,Nebraska Wednesday.Actual temp. not heat index.
  14. Bought a throttle rocker for my son for our trip to Sturgis in 06.It caused him to run a stop sign and get hit buy a truck. He was reaching for the front brake and as he went to pull in on the brake lever it caused the bike to accelerate through the stop sign and in front of a truck.Luckily it was in town and he was not hurt and all it hurt on the bike was the front fender. So when he called and told me what happened I told him to take that thing off and throw it as far as he can.
  15. MY WIFE,SON,AND HIS GIRLFRIEND WENT IN 2006 DURING BIKE WEEK AND WON'T GO BACK DURING BIKE WEEK.tOO MANY PEOPLE AND TRAFFIC WAS TOO MUCH.PLUS A LOT OF BONEHEADS SHOWING OFF ON THE ROADS.PLUS THE PROBLEMS WITH RIVAL BIKE GANGS THERE.
  16. In hot weather I would not run ethanol gas in it ,plus it also happens more frequently after filling up tank because of the gas being cool from being underground in tanks.I heard a trick but never tried it and it was to put a wooden clothes pin on the fuel line.Don't know if it works or not.
  17. A lot would depend on how far you ride to work also such as I who has a 32 mile trip one way.The bike definitely saves me money in gas and tires oil changes etc. as I do all of the maintenance myself.Plus as others have mentioned here you have to take the fun factor into account.I choose to call riding my bike my therapy. When I am on my bike I am not an old man anymore and the problems of the day seem a lot less by the time I get home.Sure I could get a smaller more economical bike but the comfort on the trip to and from work sure is nice.I don't keep track of what it costs to keep the bike going especially after finally getting the wife convinced that a bike is a big money saver for us.Plus I wouldn't have met all you fine people on here if I didn't have the Royal Star Venture.
  18. To anyone who may be interested there is a rally the 8th,9th,10th.It is a benefit that is held every year for raising money for children with maxifacial deformities so they can recieve corrective surgeries,(a very good cause). It is in Upland,Nebraska, small town of about 300 people. They have free camping in a nice city park for tent campers and also spaces for pull behind campers. It is an annual event which is growing every year. There are vendors selling everything from boots to leathers, patches etc.,live bands, street dances, beer garden, pork barbeque, silent auction, raffle, and a great poker run, bike games, etc. It is a really good time and family friendly so don't be afraid to bring your kids.We have attended the last three years and had a great time.So anyone who would like come on over. Also have church service on sunday morning and a bikers breakfast.
  19. Sorry to hear this.Had a similar one about a year ago not far from where I live.Exept 3 riders where killed coming back from sturgis and were hit head on by a drunk driver who just got back on the highway from buying more beer at a liquor store at 9:00 A.M. and someone had already called the police and reported this guy drunk minutes before the accident.
  20. My son was 14 when I got his first bike for him,it was a 550 Honda Nighthawk.Perfect for him to learn on.He had a school permit so he rode it everyday to school 15 miles. Then after 6 months he got a 2001 883 sportster and he got my old 2002 Vulcan 1500 classic when he turned 15 and we rode together to Sturgis and back when he was 15.Now he has a 2003 Midnite Venture and I got an 2001 Royal Star Venture. He practically grew up on bikes and is a very good rider. He is my riding buddy we really enjoy riding together. His Mom was not too keen on the idea of him having a bike but she has seen the joy we get out of riding together and how it is just one more thing that he and I love to do together and something we do as a family. We go on poker runs and rallies as much as we can and he and I both ride 32 miles one way to work everyday. So I think he will probably be like me and never give up riding till he can't throw the leg over the bike or keep it balanced. Then you get a trike!!!
  21. Hi everyone, still got the light problem but have narrowed it to the switch.Anyone know of a good place to get one or anyone have one lying around that they would be willing to sell.I checked Bike bandit and you have to buy the whole left hand switch assembly for over 200.00!!!! OOuch!!!
  22. Pretty sure that is my problem too.
  23. Fairing is back together already so I hooked up the old bulb to a battery just to makes sure it wasn't the bulb and both low and high sides of the bulb lit up ,then tore apart the switch and checked for continuity and it checked OK,then turned power on for voltage check at the switch and the switch has power on both low and high beam side depending on switch position. So now I tear into fairing again and check the pigtail.
  24. Yep sure did and it is good.
  25. Riding my bike is therapy to me also. That is what is nice about having a 32 mile ride to work one way.I have time to chill out and relax.Plus when I get on my bike I do not feel like an old man anymore.
