  1. 1.84 seconds, 4 ribs, 3 teeth and a nasty seatbelt bruise.
  2. My son-in-law has an 1980 Yamaha XS850G that he has let sit a couple of years. He enjoys the bike but is not mechanically inclined and funds are a concern. We are working to get the bike running again this year for his birthday. The starter quit, and he parked it at that point. My plans are: Remove and clean out the tank, fresh fuel Remove and clean the carbs Sync the carbs Track down the starter issue - I'm guessing the solenoid but need to test it. Install new battery Here's where I'm hoping for some input and ideas. The mufflers have lost the back end, making them straight pipes and too loud. I don't know much about muffler systems. Can the current pipes be repaired by putting in new baffles? Should I replace them? Many here have used mufflers off of Harleys, is this an option? Is it conditional on the pipe diameter? I'm not sure I know enough to ask all of the questions I need to ask. Please let me know any info I need. Dave:detective:
  3. It's a 1982 GS650, 4 cylinder motor. At 60 mph it is about 200 rpm's higher than my '86 Venture and keeps up really well. If it only had a bigger tank.
  4. I added a sissy bar to Jan's bike this last week. She's happy!! We've ordered a pack to go it as well.
  5. I purchased an automotive paint spray gun from Harbor Freight ($10.00) to use with the compressor I already owned. The auto paint supplier was able to line me up with the paint, clear coat, and prep materials I needed to do the job. One of my neighbors had done a lot of paint work over the years. I sat down with him and he explained how to go about painting it. Then I just went to work. I had to sand off a small area where the paint ran a little bit and the clear coat had some orange peel texture to it at first, but a little light sanding there and another shot of clear coat and it was ready to go. I was intimidated by the idea going in but quickly learned that it wasn't overly hard to do a straight up (two colors) paint job. I don't claim that it's as good as someone that does it every day but I was very please. Patience is the key!! My son help along the way and a couple of weeks later, we repainted everything on his bike except the fairing. Go for it. Dave
  6. I repainted my trunk last spring and the local automotive paint store was able to match the colors from my 86 very close. Because of the type paint used they couldn't get an exact match but nobody has been able to tell that there is a difference at all. I was very happy. A suggestion though. Once they get it matched, have them write the formula down in case you need more in the future. Dave
  7. Thanks for the ideas!! Where are you buyint Dielectric Grease? Is it under another name? I've looked at Autozone, Checker, Pep Boys, NAPA etc. Is the cleaner as hard to find?
  8. In the morning (or when it's cold out), the turn signals and the indicator light come on and stay on. While they are lit up, I can hear a buzz from something inside the fairing. Once the ambient temp warms up, the signals work fine. I looked through the service manual but it doesn't talk about this situation. I'm thinking that it's probably the flasher relay or the self cancelling unit. Please let me know what you think it would be and how difficult it is the correct and where it's located. Thanks all!! Dave
  9. I don't know enough about the RSTD but I looked up a 2005 RSTD and it shows the plugs to be NGK-DPR8EA-9, which are a resistor type plug. I hope this helps.
  10. The SWR can effect the amount of noise you pick up just as the rewiring helped eliminate some. Other things that can have a big impact is the spark plugs. Changing to resistor type plugs can eliminate most if not all of the interference. You can also ad a noise filter to dampen more. In the 70's, when running CB's in my cars, adding the resistor plugs usually did the trick. Dave
  11. Yes, that's on my '86!!
  12. There will be 5 nights lodging and 4 2/3 days worth of meals. I personally estimate the lodging at about $10.00 per person per day. This would have me paying for $100.00 worth of lodging that I don't need. That equates to 25% of the total cost. So, if I go at the full price, I'm spending $$ on lodging I don't need or I'm subsidizing the costs for the rest of the group.
  13. Gibvel- I have the Clearview windshield (wider and taller version) and it does move the air over and around better in my opinion. I also get the vent which helps with air backwash. I'm 5' 11" (and settling) and I look through the windshield while driving but can force myself to sit up tall and see over it if necessary. I have done this during rain etc. My wife a noticed less helmet buffeting too. Dave
  14. I would like your opinions on this. Our local riding group is having a 20th anniversary rally the first week in Aug. They have arranged for food and lodging at a Junior College and have set the registration at $199.00 per person ($398.00 for me and the wife). I asked what the cost would be without the lodging as we have a cabin nearby. The response I received was that the rally price is all inclusive and "the entire cost of the event is minimal, to the extreme, which permits just about anyone who can afford to ride a motorcycle, afford this event" Maybe I should sell the bike?
  15. Midrsv Curious as to if you are still planning a ride through the National Parks in Utah this year. Depending on work schedules, I would love to try to hook up with you. Dave:cool10:
  16. Our deepest sympathies go out to Meandog and his family. We pray that that they will feel God's comforting spirit during this time.
  17. I thought the only alternative to getting older is termination:rotf:
  18. Same problem here. The 100 yards of driveway is either still frozen or mud. I can't get the bike to the road to ride anywhere. I was able to fire it up over the weekend. It was exciting and painful at the same time. Summer is coming!!
  19. Patrick- With the route you're planning, you can get to Yellowstone for a 2- 2 1/2 hour add to your trip (plus playtime in the park). Mammoth Hot springs has a great place to get ice cream, I hear it's good for the soul. There are some good twisties in the park and beautiful scenery. They have places to spend the night whether you're camping or staying motels. Have a great trip!!
  20. Kurt, sorry to hear of your accident. Heal fast and then you can restore your friend. Dave
  21. Depending on the route you take, coming down I-15 you could look at riding Beartooth Pass and Yellowstone National Park and then across Nevada, over the Sierra Nevada Mountians into Califormia. If you come through Salt Lake City, look us up. Dave
  22. What about a golf shirt with pocket?
  23. I found the following bike on the local site the other day. Tell me if you think it's worth trying to get running. If not it might make someone a great parts bike!! http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=218&ad=2585824&cat=&lpid= It must be an '83 model. Dave
  24. Todd- I looked at the parts list on mrcycles.com and the cylinder kit listed there for the clutch is the same as the part your mechanic sold you. There may be a defective part in the kit or (unlikely) that they were installed in the wrong order. No great answers here but I wish you the best of luck. Dave
  25. I also have the Metzlers on my '86 and they ride great. Many don't care for them. My son runs Avons on his '82 Silverwing and we have IRCs on my wifes Suzuki 650. All three brands ride nicely, especially feel great when they are brand new. I'm planning on trying the Avons next go round but still have some riding to do first.
