  1. Haven't noticed rear shock problems yet.. and now its out of warranty but nice to know what to look for Squidley thanks for the invite, would be nice to see the new homestead there.. I'll look you up one day soon.. BTW I still have those RSTD bars w/ ur name on it..
  2. Well.... FINALLY got my bike back... yesterday.. Front forks ... they said there wasn't anything wrong with them warranty would cover ... the fork cover rattling was known problem and no remedy. I had them rebuilt anyhow and lowering kit installed since i wanted it lowered.. I can tell the difference immediately. $500 Cruise Control ... Surges up and down while driving (5-10 mph surges) wow.. that was a tough one for them.. They did immediately validate the problem existed and needed to be fixed under warranty - so that was better than the last dealer I took it too that charged me for adjusting something and did it wrong. But was challenging to fix and took a while.. But I had to leave it with them until done because the warranty expired while it was there. They checked all the obvious then Yamaha blamed it on the carbs being dirty and lean... dealer didn't think so since it ran fine.. but had to rebuild them.. but talked Yamaha into pitching in to clean the carbs since this is second time I tried to get fixed. I also paid some additional for re-jetting and adjusting for ethanol fuel and open pipes.. $200 But that didn't fix it...!! So then Yamaha started throwing parts at it.. control unit, throttle valve etc.. Finally the last part they had left to replace was the problem, the vacuum actuator pump. Even though it bench tested good it was failing in use. So I finally have a working cruise that wont get me sea sick! All in all, I am pleased with this dealer because they did stick with it until it was fixed.. it just took awhile because Yamaha was directing the troubleshooting after the basic things were eliminated. They said Yamaha no longer has a regional repair expert to send out to dealerships also due to budget cuts. On carbs and gasoline.. this guy says Ethanol gas is here to stay but a big pain espec down her where it is so hot and humid. When the alcohol evaporates out it pulls in moisture and can corrode carbs in a few weeks. He recommended seafoam for a cleaner if burning a tank a week, otherwise a stabilizer if ride less often, like a tank a month. And drain tank and use in the car if bike will sit up awhile. Keith
  3. Called the dealer and they said there are no recalls or bulletins on my bike. I see this old thread.. maybe mine doesn't fall in the serial number (or is it VIN number?) range http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=53981&highlight=2007+rstd+recall They will get to my bike next week..for the other stuff...
  4. So there was head bolt recall for the 07 RSTD? Any other recalls or bulletins out there? Thanks guys
  5. ok well I dropped it off.. (Houston Yamaha Motorsports) They already warned me if they look at it and its not covered by warranty then it will cost me.. I'm sure it will cost me. He said the loose rattling front fork was a common problem and nothing could be done with it. I hadn't heard that one.. Cruise Control - they will prob blame on the aftermarket pipes and carb needs synching or some excuse like the other place did.. but its been doing it ever since I got it. Even checking the rear shock would cost a service charge.. so I said never mind. I asked for a bid on lowering the front with progressive springs kit... He recommended lowering the rear, but I mentioned all the sperts on this forum say do the front first since the bike already has a high rake to start with.. he said he didn't trust forums.. ;-) Question1: If I lower only the front would I need to cut or change the kickstand? Question2: They are trying to sale me extended warranty before this one expires.. I hate buying warranties... is this a no way, not worth it? Question3: They wanted $80 for a oil change - I said no thanks I can handle... is that normal rate? Thanks for advice so far... Keith
  6. ha yea I just missed a maint day at Kregs.. was out of town dangit
  7. Thanks.. I have some slight backfiring on decel also.. not sure I want to get into all that though.. $$
  8. Hey guys.. My 07 RSTD is about to run out of warranty in couple of weeks. I have a front fork tube that is vibrating and making a clanging noise at times I want to get looked at.. And I don't think my cruise control has ever worked right - surges up and down as it tries to adjust the speed Anything else I should have checked out before it ends?.. I'm sure they will charge me to look it over.. It only has ~ 9k miles... yea I know .. bought it 2 years ago w/ no miles on it but also don't get to ride like I want to.. can't even commute to work on it since I work from home ;-) ALSO, anyone recommend or not recommend a dealer in North Houston, TX area? The one in Humble couldn't fix my cruise and charged me .. Thanks, Keith
  9. So sorry to hear that.. Wishing for a speedy recovery.
  10. I added small (Wallyworld) Optronics running lights. Added a switch in the back of the headlight housing towards left side. The relay is in the housing so the switch was real easy to wire. Its not necessarily convenient for easy access but I rarely if ever turn them off. I can reach it while driving but ... not advisable.
  11. Mark, Wishing you strength during these trying times. Sorry about your dad. And it is hard to watch them lose so much of their mobility and self reliance and a lot of work to support them through it. I see that future coming soon for my folks.. Take care, Keith
  12. Ah yes thats right Mike.. you have done the RSTD in similar method.. I may need to try that one day since I haven't 'forked' out the big bucks to lower the front with a progressive kit.
  13. Yea but this method only works on the Venture, not the RSTD due to the wide speedometer.. +1 on the RickButler seat mod !!!!
  14. Yep that's the link many of us followed .. very good instructions by USNMUSTANG The only thing to note is the Flanders model he listed is not what many of us bought.. the Flanders model I and others got for the RSTD is 650-08783 ..
  15. I cannot fathom the loss you and your family are going through but can only offer my condolences and prayers.
  16. wow I go MIA on the forum a few weeks and miss all the fun Congrats on the new place Brad and Lonna ! If you do another work day let me know.. hopefully I'll be available Keith
  17. Ha I just ran across this vid on wimp and thought about posting.. but decided to search first ;-) interesting use of motorcycle stunt riders to demo the principles
  18. My 07 RSTD manual says replace them every 4 years, not 2 .. 2 would seem excessive.. I have replaced the front ones .. mainly because I changed handlebars.. not done the rear yet. I have a 99 Honda w/ original lines and still functioning ok.. But I am sure it would still be wise to replace them..routinely Question.. If you replace them with the woven stainless lines.. should they not need to be replaced as often??
  19. Thanks for the very useful reminder.. its a tough lesson Glad your friend is ok - that had to be a shocker
  20. I never use mine because it lunges on my... up and down 5 or so miles an hour... kind of like it would need to do when climbing a hill, but it even does it on straightaways.. Haven't figured out why yet...
  21. Our prayers for the whole family as I know this has got to be hard. TIRR is a great facility so he is in great hands. I haven't been part of this Venture family that long but I have met Ponch and he showed me how to replace my tires (and did most of the work) so I know what a giver he is. If there is any help needed at all I would love to lend a hand as I know many others do also. Hoping for a steady recovery. Keith
  22. And note.. The level of annoyance of the Yamaha whine is directly proportional to the quality of your hearing in that frequency range I have a certain level of it but not sure just how bad it really is due to the unofficial law of physics stated above.
  23. Welcome Yea nice bike.. same one I have. Looks like you got aftermarket back rest (Utopian maybe) also and the front fender rail and ornament/light are add-ons as well Yes my feet get hot also.. in SE Texas.. Ride with boots anyhow or they will really burn and added Kuryaken Longhorn Foot pegs to get them out in the wind. I have the wind deflectors also, but as Mike said more noticeable in winter time than summer. One of the first mods you might want to do is change the stock horn on the right side to a Stebel or Wolo air horn. search the sight.. many threads about it. Enjoy -Keith
  24. Prayers are with him. I'm nearby also so let me know if we can help in anyway
  25. Congrats Mark and tell us about Sturgis when you return (what you can reveal anyhow)
