  1. If you've taken the speedo/gauge assembly apart, when you put it back together you must ensure that the needles on both gauges are above the stops. I know I'm not the only one around here that has had this same thing happen to them. Just one of those "D'OH" moments we all cherish!!
  2. OK, all, I've got a question for everyone to ponder. I know what the service manual says about the vacuum actuator to the throttle wire joint cable. My question is this: if the cable is properly adjusted, how far does the actuator pull in before it starts moving the throttle cables at the carbs???? I had a broken throttle cable a few years ago, fixed by the dealer, and the cruise hasn't worked since. I'm wondering if the whole cable setup needs to be adjusted/fixed/whatever. Any ideas?? All of the parts of the cruise check good, I've tried it holding the clutch/brake levers, the lights all come on like it's working properly, only it doesn't.
  3. Let me know what you find out, Mike. I was looking at the little puddle of antifreeze on the floor today, and it's coming from the top right corner of the radiator, up by the cap. I'll have to pull the plastic cover off to see better, but it's definitely wet. Just something else to fix!!
  4. Been fixing all of the broken plastic with Plastex. I had a lot of missing/broken tabs, cracked holes, split joints, I don't know what was holding it on the bike! Seems to be working well, the hard parts were building new tabs. Haven't put it back together yet, waiting for my battery cables to arrive. Plastex is easy to work with. Just grind a groove in the crack, fill it with the powder, and wet it with the supplied liquid. Welds the plastic into one unit, so simple that even I can do it. Even works in the cold! I'll give a report on the effectiveness of the stuff later in the summer, once I put a few hundred miles on the repairs!
  5. Front fender is easy, remove the 4 bolts and the speedo cable, and take the fender off. The rear fender, well, I really don't know about that one. Never had a reason to take it off! How about it, guys and gals, how does the rear fender come off???
  6. Is there a rebuild kit for the valve body, or is it a trip to the hardware store for O-rings?? I have kind of the same problem. I pump up only the rear shock, don't need air in the forks. Most of the time the air bleeds off, sometimes it doesn't. Re-soldered all of the joints in the controller. Beats the heck out of me.
  7. Knoxville has Sat night races, also. Sounds like a fun day or so. Any excuse to ride!!!!
  8. Put me down for a set, also. Woohoo!! I was hoping you'd start making these again.
  9. Did you just cut off the end of the cable that went to the cassette player?
  10. Don't work as in "doesn't turn on", or "doesn't tune properly"? I believe there is a thread in the tech tips section that tells you how to fix the pushbutton switches on the radio. If it doesn't turn on, check your fuses, get a meter and check 12VDC into the radio. From there, well, help me out here, guys...
  11. Just another suggestion; replace only one switch at a time. Unsolder the 4 leads on the old switch, take note on how the switch is orientated on the board, then install the new one and solder it in. It's easy to put them in wrong. You have a 50/50 chance of getting it wrong, take a second to give it a look, and do it right the first time. Even for the "rookies", you'll be surprised how easy it really is!
  12. Just replaced all 10 switches on my radio circuit board. All 10 were bad!! Radio works great now! Memory locations program, it's all good. Got 'em from Mouser Electronics; http://www.mouser.com $.26 each Mouser p/n 688-SKHHAM, manufacturer p/n SKHHAMA010 6.0x6.0x5.0mm Fit like a glove, no mess, no fuss! Ordered on 21 Dec, showed up on the 23rd. If you need radio switches, go here!!

  14. Ugly as the day is long, but do you know, every time that guy gets on that thing, he's probably laughing his head off!! He could bolt a bench seat to the hood and carry 3 more people!
  15. I believe I've got the only brown 85 in the metro area. I've seen other Ventures out and about, couldn't tell you what year. Daryl, shoot me a PM before you head down, this weekend coming up is a bit busy!
  16. Here's some V-6 power for you... http://thereifixedit.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/leannag-frankenbike.jpg Ingenious, but at the same time, scary!!!
  17. I have a trunk from an 83 or 84(I think. It's smaller than my 85 trunk) that I'd like to get rid of. It's got a crack on the right side of the lid, and it has been outside on my picnic table for a while now. Missing the lock, and I don't know what else hardware for mounting it. Free to whoever wants it, just pay shipping. I don't need it, I got it when I was trying to find all the parts for my 85. Let me know!!
  18. The voltmeter needle will do the same thing...spent a couple of hours troubleshooting that one!!!!
  19. No matter which one you go with, make sure you pass on your handiwork of the install, any problems you had, etc., etc. Pics would be really good. I am considering the same thing, don't really know how to start.
  20. Does this mean Mr. Butler will re-do my 1st Gen seat??? Not 'til winter, of course!!
  21. Yes, more pics! More on the removable part for rear wheel stuff!
  22. Got four of the switches that are green/brown from corrosion. The others look OK, but who knows for sure!! Guess I'll clean, clean, clean and see what happens!
  23. I've got a couple of buttons on my radio not working. I pulled the radio apart, the switches look pretty crusty. I'd like to replace the switches, does anyone out there have a part number for new switches??? Or somewhere to get switches??? I promise to take pics of the operation!! Thanks!! Bill W.
