---------------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks gharbourjr! Last night I called Sentry Insurance at 1-888-324-7952 & the normal American speaking agent (very important to me) took the info: - 2008 Royal Star Venture - about $1000 of addons (chrome, grips, air horn) - no motorcycle accidents since 1967 - 2 driving tickets in 43 years - located in Richmond, VA Both of these insurance companies are quoting the exact same coverage: - Progressive Universal Insurance Company (with USAA Insurance discount) $429 - Sentry Insurance - Dairyland Insurance Company (Venture Rider Club discount) $279 WOW - Sentry is about 35% CHEAPER! gharbourjr, you saved me some money & I appreciate your info! The agent I contacted is 888-373-6879 ext. 3868 - Davie Thao I'm signing up 4/21 just before my Progressive expires... JohnB

First carb sync!
First_N_Last replied to Shipper's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Well I dug out my home made carb-balancer & adjusted my carbs... It just didn't seem right... light occasional pop in exhaust during idle & lots of pop when decelerating. It was so weird that I re-read my instructions 4 times for doing it. I rode the bike for a couple days & just dragged everything out to adjust it again. I didn't have a tach, so I dragged my oscilloscope out & hand made an inductive pickup & hooked it on spark plug cable #1... set the pulse period to 60ms (1000rpm) & started the adjustment again. Because the adjusting seemed wrong, I balanced 3&4, then switched the vacuum hookup lines between 3&4 & checked again. The adjustment was way off. So... I checked all my connections for the vacuum lines to my 4 foot tall oil/hose balancer & found a leak. Fixed the vac barrel leak & then everything adjusted great & now it is better than when i first started 4 days ago . The moral of the story is re-check, re-check & re-check. Har! Sharing my embarrassment to hopefully save someone else some time. johnb -
I wore mine out in the 70's... they work much better than a knife or screw driver!

My recommended RSV mods
First_N_Last replied to First_N_Last's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Sure those end flimsy little pieces of plastic will break. They are a poor design & really not needed. The center bolts & 6 fairing mount bolts make it solid yet allow flexing for the assembly of the upper fairing & windshield. I did the bracket mod & then took it off. IMHO it was not needed. johnb -
My recommended RSV mods
First_N_Last replied to First_N_Last's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
OOPS... I forgot the most important MUST. Join this Website... Read... Question...Study & make friends. -
I have finished the mods I felt are a MUST for a RSV. Mine is a 2008 Venture optioned as a S model. My "Must Do" modification/add list is as follows: clean & weatherproof the radio/CB cable connectors fabricate & install Engine Guard Braces buy & install Tony Dathan's Passing Lamps Light Bar Spacer Bracket buy & install Rick Butler's Bag Bolts buy & install Rick Butler's Seat Thumb Nuts buy & install a Stebel Air Horn (or equivalent) - I installed mine in the fairing & kept the other horns also working replace the six OEM windshield/fairing 5mm bolts with longer bolts (about 1/4 inch longer) & use bigger washers (almost like fender washers) to minimize chance for breaking the ABS fairing when tightening buy a small tool pouch... fill it with some tools, tie wraps, etc. - dump the OEM tool kit stuff in the pouch & place it in a side bag buy a Shock Air Pump/Gauge & stick that in your tool pouch buy Rain Gear & stick it in a side bag buy a GPS & RAM Mount for long rides buy a good pair of headsets for CB/radio/intercom gut the tape deck & modify it for Zune/IPod/Mp3 player storage & extend the AUX input with a cable buy & install a good set of handlebar grips - modify them to retain the factory handlebar chrome weight extensions That is it for what I believe to be the MUST things I had to do for my Venture. Remember, these items/changes are simply my opinions. I do not believe that it is worth fabricating & installing brackets for attaching the ends of the windshield mounting bar to the speaker nuts. The bar has plenty of holding power from the center two bolts & leaving the ends to float, makes installing the upper fairing & windshield back in place easier. JohnB

I thought I'd share my recent experience with the Famous Rick Butler Bag Bolts & Seat Thumb Nuts. I communicated with Rick to buy them on Saturday... Paid Rick with PayPal on Saturday... Rick shipped them on Saturday... I received them on Monday... Installed them today (Tuesday)... They stuff works great as described & Rick's performance for shipping is fantastic. I'd recommend this stuff to all. JohnB

Well I installed my 6235 ISO grips. Biggest difficulties were getting the bullet end cap weights off without scratching them & modifying the grip ends to enable use of the OEM end caps. For getting the end-caps off - wrapped the outside of the caps with 6 layers of duct tape then used a strap wrench to break them loose to unscrew found grunting & vulgarity quite helpful For opening the ISO grip end to fit the OEM end-cap - I started grinding out the hole with a Dremel tool... that was taking forever! went to Harbor Freight & bought $15 Step-Drill then drilled out the holes to 1 inch easily cut a brass pipe for the spacer on the throttle side Only remaining problem is that the throttle is a little sticky. I'll take it apart & fix that another day. The grips are great & look really nice with the OEM end-caps on. johnb

My 2008 also had the fairing screw holes for the windshield mount cracked. It was replaced under warranty. Dealer balked... but a call to Yamaha took care of it. I believe as others, that over tightening screws on ABS plastic can easily cause this. IMHO, this is a poor design. I plan on strengthening my mounts in the summer with possible metal strips, fiberglass, something... Maybe drilling out the hole to a larger size - then placing a sleeve over the bolt to allow tightening the windshield without crushing the ABS fairing. Thoughts? The end windshield bar mount fix will also be completed. johnb

I just spoke with my wife about this. She says a one word description of me is the one she made up. It is... FAH I argued with her that it is not a word but an acronym, but she was then even more determined. F. A. H. stands for Fxxking Ass Hoxx Fill in the x's with the most logical letters. I am so loved JohnB

My 2008 came with Bub mufflers. They were too loud for me. I jambed some universal baffles in them to quiet them a little. Loud is what I have now in place of the ROAR. The Bubs are straight through with scalloped side walls inside. johnb
