I traded my 99 Venture back in 2003 for a Kaw Nomad. I also grew tired of the full fairing. I'm happy with the Kaw but may go for an RSTD when replacement time comes. Or I may get another Nomad. The Venture was great for long haul riding, even more so than the Nomad. I've thought about gettting another Venture but now that hot weather is here I don't even like the windshield on my Vulcan. I don't think I'll ever go back to a faired bike unless I also have another for hot weather.

New RSTD Ownerr

Is that price amazingly low ($5300) or can they be found at that price? -
Anyone ride the 2009 1st gen venture Yama Sells?
keithert replied to timgray's topic in Watering Hole
Any of the sport tourers aren't going to be comfortable like a 1st gen Venture because the seating position is much more forward inclined than a Venture is. More weight on your wrists and not as comfortable of back posture. -
Sinking in asphalt

On my Venture I had the Utopia backrest. The pocket on the back of it was great for storing my kickstand puck. I had it on a string that I would look around the mirror. That way I could get it picked up when I forgot to when getting on the bike. -

I knew about it but never thought about doing it. But when the new RSTD came out it seemed like it would have been a good option since the RSTD is the exact same bike as the Venture. Didn't the older bikes have a different frame? I could be wrong about that though.

$1800 for the warranty is a crime. The Kaw warranty is readily available for around $450. Back in 2005 I paid $300 for it.

I had a 99 Venture from 99 to 03. I put 48,000 miles on it. It was a very comfortable bike but more than I wanted for in-state riding. I traded it for an 02 Nomad 1500 FI. The Nomad was more what I was after in terms of the size of the bike and I liked the ability to remove the stock windshield and substitue a smaller one. It's seating position and seat comfort was not nearly as good as the Venture's was. I tried a custom seat, a Mustang seat and finally a Corbin seat. With the Corbin seat it was comfortable enough for the distances I rode it but still not nearly as good as the Ventures seat. I temporarily gave up riding in 07 and traded the Nomad for a sports car. In 08 I bought another 1500 Vulcan. I have also put a Corbin seat on it. Again it is good but not a Venture in terms of comfort. I am strongly considering getting an RSTD in the future. I still don't really want the fixed fairing of the Venture but think the RSTD might be just the bike for me in terms of comfort, performance and reliability. I just wish they had come out with the damn thing in 2003! Converting my Venture to a RSTD front end would have been much less costly than buying different bikes!

How is the 05+ RSTD windshield in terms of wind protection and buffeting? I had a Kaw Nomad that had good protection but buffeted terribly unless oversized lowers were installed.

Give the Sportster a chance. I rented a Sportster 1200 C a few years ago and took it down to the Florida Keys. It was a VERY enjoyable bike. I'd take one any day.

Today I passed a school and saw a Venture Royale 1300 in a school's drop off lane. At first I thought it was a teacher but then I realized it was a Dad dropping his son off to school. I look forward to taking my son to school on a bike, but he's only 5 now so that's a few years off. Looked like a fun way to go to school!

While 100,000 may not be a lot on the motor. It's a huge amount on the steering head bearing, swingarm bearings, wheel bearings, fork seals, etc. Unless the price is half of what a 30-50k mile bike would cost I'd pass.

How are the old Royal Stars
keithert replied to keithert's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
It's been about 6 years since I rode the Royal Star so my memory may be faded. My current ride is an 01 1500 Kaw Vulcan. That bike is not known for stellar performance either, but I'm happy with it. The 0-60 and 1/4 mile numbers on a 99 Royal Star are slightly better than on a 99 Nomad. My main reason for thinking of a switch is that the Royal Star's size would fit me a bit better than the Vulcan and the Yamaha V-4 is reputed to be a more reliable motor than the Vulcan's. -
I contemplated trading my 99 Venture for a 96 Royal Star many years ago. I rode the 96 for about 20 minutes and it seemed to ride much better than the reports led me to believe. The reports said the bike was underpowered and that forth and fifth gears were way too high. In that short ride I didn't find those to be an issue. I know the 05+ RSTD would be very much like my Venture was in terms of performance. But a older one would fit the budget better. What are the shortfalls of the older Royal Stars from those that have owned them?

I completely disagree. I'd much rather take 30 seconds to send a text than 5 minutes to call someone and go through the 'hi, how are you routine' when all I want is one piece of information. My phone does have a full keyboard though.

I'd bring a bike on the truck. In Illinois we used TW's for class. I was trained as an instructor in 2002. I taught the minimum of a class a year for the next 4 seasons to keep my certification. I let it go last year because I didn't have the time. I found that after working a whole week of work that I had no desire to work the weekend teaching too. I'd have stayed on if there was a way to teach shorter periods.

What's the riding like near St. Charles? A few years ago I went to a BMW rally about 40 miles west of Cape Girardeau. The roads around there were incredible for the midwest. Anything similar around your place? It was a bit challenging following 2 guys on BMW's on my RSV through the twisties. but I kept up pretty well.

The Jeep Toy's for Tots last weekend was relatively gorgeous. It got up to 50 degrees! The bike guys would have killed for that weather!

I was looking for a nice one last spring. I did find one that looked nice in pics on ebay at a Harley dealer. It went for $2700. I was afraid to buy sight unseen though. Locally the ones I looked at were not good. A guy claimed his 98 was in great shape, but it had a head gasket oil leak and was not pristine. In 2002 I bought my wife a like new 95 for $3000. I couldn't find one that nice this time around.

Here is my old Nomad, my current Vulcan 1500 Classic looks mostly the same except for color. You can see me if you look close. http://www.keithert.com/pics/nomad/reflect_nomad.JPG

Did any of you end up going on the ride? If so, how was it? How many bikes there this year?

A warmer option is the Great Lakes Jeep Thing Toys for Tots Parade on December 14. You don't have to be in a Jeep to participate. Usuaully there are a hundred or so 4x4's in the event. http://www.gljt.org/

I put a center stand on my 99 back in 2000. I can't remember who made it, maybe Don can. I won it out from under him on e-bay. It worked well and was as easy to lift as most any other big bike with a stand. I liked it for storage in the garage and cleaning. Didn't use it much on the road. I had a Concours sink into the pavement a long time ago and tip over and cause $3000 of damage to the fairing, so I don't trust center stands a lot on asphalt.

Dang, that's a good price. Wish I was i the market for one now.
