This is a relatively blatant plug for a sunglass company I had some dealings with. The company is Panoptx/7Eye. The story: Bought a pair of sunglasses from a HD dealer ( was with a couple HD buddies, tax free day in MA and they were having a sale), about 1 1/2 yrs ago. Nice shades, photo grey type lense, very comfortable, eye cups for the wind and they didn't have any HD logos. Expensive ($150 on sale) but I like to buy nice stuff, it makes me take better care of it. Anyways a few months ago, they weren't changing stayed kind of a bronze color, not good in direct sunlight. Emailed the company, told them the problem, was informed that the lenses can be replaced ($60), because they do have a shelf life, an 18 month shelf life I ask? That's not right, send them in, we'll fix them, no charge. They even replaced the removeable eye cup thingy. Turn around time about 1 week, cost me $5 to ship them out to them, that's it. Good company, wouldn't hesitate to buy from them again. They even do prescription glasses, too. So if you're looking for some good quality sunglasses ( they aren't cheap, by any stretch of the imagination), I would definitely look at these.

If you decide it is the fuel pump, it's a pretty easy switch out. Obviously if it's under warranty, you'll want them to do it. But if you need to wait a couple of weeks, maybe you can get them to give you the part and just do it yourself. According to the manual I have, the test to check it, requires removal from the bike. I'm sure it can be done in place, I'm guessing the removal for the test is more of a safety issue. While you've got it apart, might as well change the filter, cause it's right there behind it.

Headlight lamp replacement.....
rek58 replied to Semi-retired's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Hope the hint was helpful. They definitely didn't make it an easy change out item, when it really should be. But maybe it was the last thing they worked on when designing. -
Headlight lamp replacement.....
rek58 replied to Semi-retired's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
When I changed my bulb, went through the same thing with the adjustment knob. Guess what? It slides off very easily, just like the knob on a stove. Pull it off and you'll pick up a little more room. I've got large hands and I was able to get in there and do the change a lot easier, without having to split the fairing. -
Well it started out with a plug fouling (right front). I had been messing with the carbs and after the fouling happened, re-synched them( of course they were off). Figured that was the problem. Put in a new plug and off I went. Happened again. Being on the highway helped keep it clean, but definitely not running great. I figure it's one of two things, a carb problem or a firing problem. The coil and plug wire are easier to check. Plug cap came back within tolerances, primary coil readings were ok but definitely on the high side. Didn't get a needle quiver for the secondary (not looking at the manual, not sure if that's the correct name) test. So I am going to assume that it is the coil or possibly the wire. Anyone else have any thought on this?

Thanks for the reply, I thought I had seen a similar answer to this question out here before. That's all I did, it seemed to go back in nice and snug. I'll just keep an eye on it.

I know I had seen something out here a while ago about this, but couldn't find it. Anyways, the brass outlet tube was weeping a bit and it popped out when I pulled the fuel line off. I understand that it is a pressure fit, ok to tap it back in as is? Use a little sealant? Or replace the whole thing? Thoughts or experiences, thanks.

You could use NADA or Kelly Blue Book to get an idea as to what the average selling price might be and then add some money for the options. I would think that might give you an idea as to where you should be money wise.

Definitely agree about the RSV and Roadstar being two different types of bikes. I guess the first thing you need to ask yourself is how much touring are you planning on doing? If you're not going to be doing a lot of long range riding (multiple 400 + miles days in a row), you might want to consider just hanging onto what you have. I can put 400 miles on my Roadstar in a day and feel pretty good at the end of the day. I've got some saddlebags with the Ghostbrackets, so for short trips, this bike is fine. Use an Ipod for my tunes. The Roadstar also handles a lot better (IMO) and sits a lot lower to the ground, so if you're challenged in the leg length dept., you may want to consider that, too. All in all, I love my Roadstar and that's why I still have it. Now onto the RSV. A bunch more built in storage capacity, handles pretty good for a big bike, built in tunes, lots of power (love kicking my friends Electra Glides butts), very easy to put a few 400 + miles a day on. And most important of all, the wife LOVES her seat. Either way you can't lose, both are great bikes. You'll just have to sit down and figure out what you really want to do, as far as you're riding goes.

My Venture is an '01, found the spot to change the heading in my profile area. Also, after I looked at the title the second time, I thought, gee, where else would the headlight be?

Got a wierd little thing going on with my front headlight. Sometimes it's nice and bright, other times it's dim. My first thought is possibly a bad ground somewhere. It seems to be just confined to the headlight, because I haven't noticed the dash lights dimming. Has anyone else had a situation like this? I'm going to test the regulator and stator first, just to make sure they are ok. The bulb is new, just replaced it, but the old one was doing the same thing.

Could also be some dirt or a hard spot on the pads.

Personally I think it should be left up to the person who's riding. I first started riding, many years ago out in Oklahoma. No helmet law out there(at least that's the way it was when I lived there). Moved back to Mass and had to wear one. I don't really mind it too much and considering the way a lot of people drive around here, it's probably not a bad idea. Although I readily admit, as soon as I cross the border into NH, off it comes. I look at it like a little helmet vacation. There are plenty of people that wear those rather thin little skid plates and that meets the helmet laws, but I'll bet it doesn't do a lot in keeping things inside it safe. I do agree with the education aspect. Some people just don't seem to care. I've gotten off my bike at stop signs and redlights and had a word or two with people who were riding a little too close. I always try to be polite (at first) and ask them to leave a little more room in between. But anyways, education is key and if you can start it early enough, hopefully it might help.

My low beam went out on me last night, but the high beam still worked. Had two things in my favor, 1) I was only 15 minutes or so from home and 2) have the driving lights, so I had a low beam for oncoming traffic. Looked up in the manual for some info on changing the bulb and it's an easy procedure, as long as the fairing isn't in the way. I don't have real big hands but it was a challenge to get at it from behind. Anyways got the bulb out. Came out here to see if there were any little secrets to the install, seems like everything I found online, was what I was experiencing first hand (no pun intended). I have an '01 RSV, so I'm going to assume that all the 2nd gens are the same. The adjusting knob for the the headlight slides off easily, you'll pick up some extra room to slide your hand in, install the new bulb and hook everything back up. Then just push the adjusting knob back on, it's just like a knob on a stove, has a flat side so just make sure you put it back on correctly.

How involved are MC inspections in your State?
rek58 replied to Tartan Terror's topic in Watering Hole
We've got an inspection here in MA. Due every May, regardless of when you bought the bike. Depends on the place you go for your sticker, as to how thorough they are. But they pretty much check the basics, lights, horn, directionals, brakes, etc. No test drive, hand over $15 and you're on the way. They use to just hand you a sticker and you just had to have it readily available to show, if asked. Now it's a smaller sticker that goes on the license plate. I also agree with some of the sentiments written about NY, I hate it, too, but it has nothing to do with motorcycles, it's just the way we're raised here in MA. -
carb sync, can it be this easy?
rek58 replied to Everette's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Reshired, it's been stated in the forum before, but I'll throw my $.02 in. I've done both the K&N filters and added slip on mufflers (Bub), bike is running fine. Both manufacturers state that re-jetting is not needed. Also, I asked a bike mechanic I trust and he said the same thing. He did say, however, if you change the whole exhaust system, to something then you may have to re-jet the carbs.- 14 replies

According to the carbtune website, this tool can be used on fuel injected bikes too. Just wondering if any of you has done this? A couple of buddies of mine have HD Electra Glides (it's sad I know, but I still let them ride with me) and I was going to experiment on them. Any info would be appreciated.- 14 replies

I have a friend who swears by the Amsoil too. I suppose in the long run, as long as you're changing it and the filter on a regular basis, you're probably good to go, regardless of what you use. I've heard the bad rap on Fram also, but I supoose if they're still on the market, they gotta be doing something right.

I have one of those handle bar holders, never had any problems with it not working properly. Here in Mass., you can register more than one vehicle on one ez-pass, just as long as it's not a commercial vehicle of any type.

I know it's still about a month away, but was just wondering who makes the trip? Not being that far away, myself and a few friends will make a couple of day trips. I've been up there the last few years, hanging around the Funspot. Good parking and that's where all the vendors usually set up for the demo's.

Ordered mine on the 5/1, got it 5/9, used it 5/11, what a difference it makes. My carbs were off quite a bit. They are all in tune now and you can definitely notice a difference in the throttle response. Haven't received my tach yet so I'll re-check after that comes in, but I'm going to assume (and I do know what that usually means, from previous personal experience) that the idle was pretty close to where it's suppose to be. But just from this initial adjustment, idle is smoother and as I said before, throttle response is A LOT sharper. I'll put a few miles on the bike in the next few days and find out about the gas mileage. Easy to do, took me about 15 minutes, what a great investment. Got to figure it will pay for itself after a couple of tune ups.

I have a pair of Panoptx. Love them. They have a transition type lens, so I don't have to worry about changing anything at night. Has a removeable eyecup, which while it's in, keeps everything off the eyeballs. Just all around nice glasses. A little on the pricey side, although I got them on sale for about $150. I've had them for about two years and they are still on the job doing well. I don't mind spending the money on a good product, it usually makes me take care of them.

I'm not sure how I even found the page (didn't save it either, duh), but someone had done their own filter study, had pictures, comments, etc. But anyways, he was very high on the K & N filter, said it was his new filter. Besides the fact that it was a nice filter, I think he liked the nut on the end, for easy removal. The Amsoil, Emgo were also very high in his ratings too. I use the Emgo, mainly because that's what is stocked at my supplier. Although I won't be buying from them anymore, found them online for about $4-$5 less. Maybe it's over kill, but I change my oil right around the 3k range, just habit from my car maintenance.
