K&N is definitely the way to go. I got mine thru Phat Performance Parts http://www.phatperformanceparts.com/SearchResults.asp?Search=ya-1399 I buy most of my parts there because of their low prices and great customer service.

I by, no means, am an expert but I am a pessimist. I found the video interesting and would love to see a comparison that was not done by a company trying to promote their shields as superior. The one thing that stuck out every time for me, and again I'm a pessimist (hardly trust anyone unless I know them), are the mounts. In the video, on every test, the acrylic shield mount was rigid. It barely moved if at all. Where the poly shield mounts moved a great deal. This would give a far better absorption rate to a blow to the shield than a rigid mount with no give. Just my observation.

A question on Baron Bag Slash pipes and baffles
WIKD replied to WIKD's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I finally got around to wrapping the baffles and I think I found the perfect sound. Rumbles more than a set of drilled out RK's but got rid of that rasping, loudness upon accelerating. I also checked to see if I had an exhaust leak at the Y and sure enough I did. Will call the dealership to get it and the dash fixed. Any idea on how they fix the Y leak?- 10 replies

Anyone try a canyon dancer. When I went to pick mine up the trailer I borrowed would not allow me to get to the lower forks. used a canyon dancer and it didn't move a bit from central GA to Central FL. Just an idea.

Hipshot you did not ask the wrong question. I think it is a valid question because of the "reputation" many 1% clubs have, whether it is deserved or not, and you can not be held responsible for peoples answers or opinions.

Please don't believe that is the only thing that differentiates between a 1% club and any other motorcycle club. If that were all there was to it the Christian Motorcycle Club and Star Touring and riding would be considered 1%. If you want to know a little something check out this link. Very informative. http://home.earthlink.net/~rcvsmc-edu/index.html

That's true and all law enforcement officers are a-holes that just want to write tickets and eat doughnuts. If you're going to make inflammatory remarks like that don't whine when people make the same statements about LEO's. Making statements like that only enforces the idea that ALL bikers are trash. I personally wear my colors on my vest proudly and call many 1% club members friends. Does that mean your generalizations include me also? Any biker that is having trouble would get me to stop and render aid if I could.

I've had a mushroom style patch/plug in my front tire for about 800 miles. Done by a shop I trust and I chek the pressure regularly, as always, and have not had a problem. I know the theory of only having two tires but have run the mushroom style patch/plug in car tires for years without a problem. Hopefully this will last past the summer and then I'll probably swap tires front and rear.

Camera off. The text at the bottom even says he lost the camera but you can see his getaway. Then it shows him going back to retrieve the camera.

I'm sorry I didn't know you were there Don. You were in my back yard. The very least I could have done was by you a beer. If you ever come back to the area give me a shout.

First off let me say I have never put a car tire on a bike and never will. My reasons are different than many others though. I still ride mine like I rode my sportbike and as well as a car tire works you can not throw it into a curve like a bike tire with as much confidence. As for the safety aspect of it I ride with two guys that use car tires and love them. One on a VTX and one on a Warrior. The guy on the VTX has over 7,000 miles on the car tire without any signs of wear and the only thing he said was at the beginning you have to get used to the way it leans into a curve. Not dangerous, just different. The guy on the Warrior likes the tire but says when it wears out hes going back to his 200 series bike tire for the higher speed handling in the curves. Yeah well, we'll see what last longer. The car tire or the bike on that one. I'm not saying there are not differences in handling, we spoke about these in length when the VTX rider first changed over, but once you get used to the differences it does seem like a great option for touring.

I just won a set of these pipes on eBay and installed them this week. I have run into two problems. One is I have a leak where the slip on meets the head pipe. Even tightened all the way up it still leaks. I just removed them and used high temp silicone in the joint and am waiting for that to dry to see if that fixes it. Any other ideas or techniques to curing that if the silicone doesn't work? number two is although I like the sound it is a little loud accelerating through the first few gears. I want to take out the baffle and wrap it but was wondering if anyone has done this and how it changed the sound? Also did you make multiple tight layers or just one wrap? Thanks for any input.

Heavy oiling is not uncommon lately. The Mustang owners I know all warned me to take my K&N for my Mach 1 and let it dry out some before putting it in. A heavy oiled filter in the Mach will cause all kinds of idle problems. Over oiling will cause a problem and it used to be the only time that happened was after you cleaned it and oiled it. However now it seems that some are coming new with too much oil.

I thought all the 2nd Gen's had the same stock height windshield. You could replace them with different Yamaha ones but from the factory don't they all come with the same size?

RSTD handlebars on the Venture
WIKD replied to BigShell's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
No link showed. However here is a pretty comprehensive list of all handlebar sizes in case anyone needs it. http://www.sideroadcycles.com/ImportedMotorcycles/ImportHandlebars/StockBarsOne.html -
In my experience, if aluminum is not oxidized then it's coated. just about any aluminum can be polished to look like chrome but it takes some work. You have to sand it using 4 to 5 grades of paper, then coarse polish it and lastly fine polish it. Floorboards wouldn't be to bad. You just have to decide whether you want to put in the time to do it.

What helped me with the decision was the wife. She always says she loves the bike but gets a bit too much wind. When talking to John at Clearview, who by the way is a top notch guy in my book, he stated that going to the XXL would improve or solve that problem. So hopefully she'll be a little more comfortable.

RSTD handlebars on the Venture
WIKD replied to BigShell's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I'm not sure what anyones individual problem is with the stock bars but heres mine and how I cured it. I have long arms and the stock bars made my elbows kick in and I rode with my arms angled towards my chest. Very uncomfortable on longer rides because it always gave me a pain between my shoulder blades. I was able to solve this without spending a dime, although there are only a handfull of people on this site that I know for a fact could do the same thing for nothing. I replaced the bars with the stock ones off my Warrior. About 3" wider and less pull back so now my arms sit perfect. The other nice part is I ran into the opposite of what the Flanders bars does. I had more than enough cable. I actually had to tuck some back in. Worked great, direct bolt on and no extra parts to buy. -
Easy off oven cleaner does not really turn aluminum yellow. What it does do is eat away at the clear coating that covers the aluminum. The metal itself is fine but the clearcoat gets eaten away. For a side job a few years ago I did aluminum polishing, mostly on sportbikes. Frames, swingarms you name it. Spray on easy off, let stand for about 10 minutes or so and spray off with a garden hose. Takes the clear coat almost 100% off and gets to the metal for polishing. Saved uncountless time over every other product we ever used including aircraft stripper. The oxidation comes from the bare aluminum not having the clearcoat on it anymore. Hit it with some polish and it will look like a mirror but it is a pain to keep up compared to chrome.

Unfortunately I won't be able to give you a definite answer for about 6 weeks. I just ordered the XXL for mine. I sit just a bit over 6' and originally put the med clearview on my RSV but when I sat normal to ride the top of the shield sat directly in the middle of my line of site. Drove me nuts. I ended up riding slouched all the time and would give myself a back ache. If I sat up tall I could see over the windshield but lets face it, that's an uncomfortable position for long hauls. Based on that I do not feel that when I get the XXL on, which is 3.5" taller than the med, I will be looking over it. I think I'll be looking thru it unless I really sit up tall. Just my thoughts on it. As for water movement, it worked great. No more sheets sitting in the middle of the shield. As soon as I got moving it seemed to flow the water to the edges and I hadn't even applied rain X yet.

I wouldn't say it's ugly. may need a little finish work but good job. And it seems to work too which is always a plus.

Never thought to replace the air ride with regular springs. Might have to look into that. I checked out the link and although it says Royal Star it does not differentiate between the TD and the Venture. Are they the same front end?
