  1. I need the size of the 2 bolts that hold the back seat on. Tore the bike down to trailer it for our camping trip and forgot to put them in the bag with the other screws/parts etc (Stupid..Stupid..Stupid). Anyway I have gone to Home Depot here twice to find an appropriate bolt and both times I was wrong. I assume it is a metric size thread and it is not 7mm which I tried. Help would be GREATLY appreciated.... Yours truly The Idiot... :bang head:
  2. Come and listen to my story about a man named Jed . . . no, wait, wrong story . . .sorry (and appologies to Flatt - or maybe Scruggs). This story is about how glad I am that I have a functioning AIS system on my RSV. My bike has been running perfectly, no popping or anything else odd, but when I had it all torn down last Saturday to check the valves, I thought it was a perfect time to go ahead and replace the plugs anyway. It was a little early for me with only about 15,000 miles on them, but I had the old ones out, so why not? Well, on the 200+ mile ride home from Tom's place, I was getting a lot of loud popping and bangs rolling through the small towns. Bummer! You can probably imagine how disappointed this made me - here I had just done major work on the bike and put in new plugs and all - I expected to be getting about 150 miles to the gallon and roll through town to cheering crowds! But alas, instead of basking in the adoration of pretty women and admiration from all the wannabe bikers, I found myself having to hide my face in shame. Now the odd thing is, I didn't notice anything else wrong with the bike - gas mileage might have been down just a tad, but considering the 105 degree heat and high speeds I was running, it wasn't really lower than normal. And I had zero problems hitting an indicated 100 MPH passing a couple of long strings of cars, so all four jugs had to be hitting OK, right? But there is no denying the evidence - popping from the exhaust on these bikes absolutely proves something is wrong with the way the fuel is burning. So today I finally drug my rear out to the garage to check things out. I fired the bike up and began checking how fast the header pipes were heating up with my fingertips, and it was obvious that the RF (#4) pipe was different. The other three were too hot to keep my finger on for more than a second or two within 15 seconds of starting the bike, but not #4. It was fairly warm, but not burning. Even tho these were brand new plugs, I pulled it and put an old one in - problem solved! And THAT's why I am so tickled my AIS is working - without the warning signs from the exhaust popping, I would have almost certainly ridden the bike with that bad plug in there for 20,000 miles or so before I accidentally fixed it during the next major service. The interesting thing is that this was the EXACT same symptom Ponch had with his bike up at Don's maintenance day - same cylinder, same symptoms, same fix. And his only real indication that something was wrong was the popping when he tried to reconect his AIS system! Goose

  5. I am sorry if this is in the wrong place. First post. My throttle hand is turning numb after only 15-20 minutes from the vibration through the grips. Am I doing something wrong or do I need gel gloves or what? Thanks for any help.
  6. I just installed a Barnett pressure plate on my '05 RSTD. I followed the instructions (which were cryptic at best), looked at Freebird's stuff, too. But obviously I've done something obviously wrong. The clutch won't engage at all now. I can pull in the lever (which doesn't feel right) pop it into 1st, and nothing happens. So the first question is: What did I do wrong? The second questions is: Why do I try to do things like this??? Any help with the first question would really be appreciated!
  7. Wondered if anyone caught this. They're looking at possibly going higher than that. Ran across this article.... http://www.usatoday.com/money/industries/energy/2009-04-16-ethanol-epa_N.htm If I have to depend on "them" to determine that higher ethanol levels won't damage my vehicles (particularly the bikes), I have but one question......When it is shown that they're wrong, missed something, screwed up and/or my equipment is damaged, who's gonna pick up the tab for the repair??? (yes that is a totally rhetorical question)
  8. I have had radio problems for about a year now. The buttons will stop working when in heavy rain but would dry out and start working again. I have taken it apart and drained water out of it. Then I sealed it with sealicone sealer, big mistake that just kept more water in it. So I took the sealer off and drilled two drain holes in the bottom. It helped some, the radio would dry out faster. I'm getting it ready to ride and the memo button will not let me set stations. I have it all apart and see nothing wrong. I thought of putting it in the oven to see if needs drying out. again a temporary fix. So I'm looking for any help on how to fixes this problem with out changing radios. I've been spending a lot of money this year on maintance and upgrades. So a little savings would help out. Thanks Jerry:fingers-crossed-emo
  9. Anyone ever get the wrong diameter/ large O ring with the new oil filter???? Changed oil today, I put that thing on twice, still had to go and use the old O ring
  10. Well, I finally made the plunge and bought a odyssey pc680 battery for the venture. Everything seems to be fine except, there is a lot of extra room in the battery box now. I did not get the one with the metal jacket so I don't know if that is the diffrents or if I got the wrong battery entirely. If anyone who has made the switch can let me know if this is normal or not it would be greatly appreciated. Best Regards Kurt
  11. I had a crack in the bottom of my trunk. Now it is a large crack with a chunk missing. I need to fix it or replace it. I was watching one on ebay but it sold for $190 plus shipping and it was the wrong color. Is there a cheaper way to get this fixed? Mine is burgundy (88 VR)
  12. So many threads about things that have gone wrong or need fixed I thought I'd go the other way. (I do this periodically) Unlike some of you (sorry ) I have the ability to ride year around. And I tell you, this RSV is just rock solid. It always starts, it always goes, it's always smooth, it's always comfortable. It always does whatever I ask of it. It is a fantastic scoot. I just flipped 50K on it. I took one of my daughters out yesterday on a 200 mile ride pulling the trailer (I was working actually). It feels good when all you have to do is concentrate on the road and the scenery and not have to worry about your bike. Here's to you folks in the frozen parts of the Mainland to a quick spring so you can get out and ride your RSV!
  13. I tried searching the forum but could not find it, but does anybody have a copy of the document the dealer uses to do final assembly of the 2nd Gen RSV? I would like to read the document as I am just curious as to what the dealer has to install and adjust... It might help purchasers of new bikes to make sure the dealer did not do something wrong...
  14. tried to go to the chat room, and it won't recognize me. I am signed in here OK. what up?

  16. Why does it always seem when you try to get ready for a road trip your motorcycles mechanics become a problem. I bought a new "to me" Venture a few months back. My brother, son and myself are getting ready for a trip through Arkansas and I decided to bring the Venture in for a good check out a few weeks ago. All looked fine until the mechanic saw large cracks (not all the way through) on the Intake Manifold Boots. He has dicked around for almost 3 weeks and we are scheduled to leave Saturday. Of course the parts came in yesterday and were wrong We are trying to overnight the new ones in and will have to see what happens. I got on the phone to call around Houston and see if the parts are available locally (I know it's a long shot) and couldn't find any. But I did find out the price was about $167.16 for the 4 carbs. He had quoted me $436.00 for the parts that he ordered. They were the wrong ones but I am interested to see what he says on these one. Of course there could be more parts that I am not aware of? If he says $436 and I have priced all the parts, then we will part ways in a not so nice manner. I don't want to confront him and find out that I omitted a few parts that justify the cost. Any input will be helpful. P.S. Nice site and I apoligize for jumping in with a post like this.
  17. My friend who own a tire shop, has an idea which we are going to try. He believes that by using the truing machine to round the edges on a car tire that it will solve the cornering issues. he intends to cut 5/32 of the edge and round toward the center. will keep yall posted. Sorry posted in wrong area, someone moved it for after I changed it, read the next one up. Please read the other post with the same title. Cruise On Gregg:fingers-crossed-emo
  18. We've had a sort of crisis here over the past month. About a month ago, my wife Sam called me from work telling me she needed to go to the ER because she was having chest pains and shortness of breath. It was the longest 10 minute drive of my life to go pick her up and get her there. After 6 hours of tests and more tests, they told us that it was definitely NOT heart or lung related, her blood tests showed no heart attack and she did not have blood clots in her lungs. (Now...Sam had no idea what the lung tests were about, but having run on ambulances for 30 years, they scared me the most because I know how bad they can be)Anyway, they let us go home and she went to visit our regular doctor the next day. They wanted an echo-cardiogram, which was done. We got a call a few days later that they might have found something wrong and she needed to see a cardiologist ASAP.It seems the echo cardiogram showed her heart might not be pumping properly out of the left side. So....more tests and another 10 days of waiting on pins and needles, today we got the results of everything. Seems the first echo cardiogram was wrong and she is fine........seems the chest pains were probably caused by either a pulled muscle of a torn rib cartilage. I'm not really a religious person, but as we got into the car after leaving the doctor, I DID look to the sky and say a thank you. Those of you who have met Sam know how special she is and she means the world to me so the past month has been very stressful. I think I now know at least a part of the anxiety that some of you are going through with your loved ones, and believe me, you all have my thoughts and best wishes. I don't know what I would have done if the news was bad.
  19. Well here we go again 7530 mile on the back tire still showing tread vacation coming in to weeks planing on about 3000 miles should I pay for the rush mount of a tire or go for it. Will the stock tire go 10500 miles or will I find myself on the side of the road saying XXXX I knew better then that. Or roadkill saying what the heck is wrong with you dummy.
  20. Sorry, probably not the right folder but.... Has anyone dealt with this eBay seller? Pinwall Cycleparts http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&Item=350090091169&Category=10066 They list a crash bar that would replace my, ahem, "bent" one... It's a bit hard to tell from the pics how bad the "road rash" is but it looks straight - can you see any thing wrong with it?
  21. Could someone with power please move my meet-n-eat thread to the "Meet-n-Eat area of the forum? Sorry I posted in the wrong place. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?p=240592#post240592 Thanks
  22. Whats wrong with your bike? You said in another thread you were waiting on parts?
  23. I am installing (going to try anyway) the passing lamp spacer and the instructions in the tech library call for 2 3/8" NC x 3/4" bolts. What does the NC stand for. I've never seen this expressed. I don't want to buy the wrong thing.
  24. I had previously mentioned having broken the left side trunk latch bracket (the vertical plate that goes into the locking mechanism).. It was a shear break leaving a flat plate of ABS on the metal part.. a clean break. I purchased some ABS cleaner and Adhesive to "weld" the piece back on.. And wow, that worked nicely! It took me longer to read the instructions on the two cans than it did to apply the product and hold it in place for 2 minutes.. Leave it sit for at least 7 hours and presto.. good as new. I actually pulled on it quick hard trying to break it again but it held. I just needed to make sure it wouldn't accidentally come apart at the wrong place and wrong time.. So.. there you go.. it works well. Thanks to all for their sage advice and comments on ABS parts repair. (Side Note: An ABS welding kit would not have worked in this application due to the way the break is located.. Welding requires a flat surface and cutting of a V Groove in order to 'weld' a bead into the v groove. I would not have been able to do this on the upper trunk latch plate.)
  25. Every time I look at classifieds the "distance" from me is shown incorrect? Anyone know how to correct that?
