  1. I have been thinking about cutting a windshield down to 3-4 inches for a summer windshield on my 2000 RSV. Anybody try anything like this? Would like some more wind to keep me cool for summer riding. Bob
  2. I've had my Kury Longhorn Pegs in the perfect position since I got the RSTD. A few months ago I added the lower wind deflectors (Yamaha). I cant seem to come up with the right adjustment for the pegs now without interfering with the deflectors. Their either too close or too low. Does anyone know of pegs that extend farther out to clear the deflectors but still allow for some height adjustment? Option 2: What do I use to trim the deflector? (If anyone else has done this, can you provide a picture? I dont care for this option because of the price paid for lower wind deflectors.)
  3. I finally got enough stuff done on the bike to take it out for the first of many required doses of the treatment for PMS. There is no cure. Not a monster ride but a good shakedown of about 80 miles with a lot of it around town. About a third of it was on local streets and the rest on local highways. The wind was brutal, I have never ridden in that much wind and at one point going over a high bridge, with a 40mph cross wind, over the harbor, I had to slow down to about 40mph just to stay on the bike. There were a couple of times that a gust hit me hard enough that I had to make an effort to not get blown off the side of the bike. The bike itself seemed to handle the cross wind just fine, it was me that didn't. Of course the bike ran crappy since the tank is/was full of gas bought in October of last year, and of course it was crap reformulated gas to boot. It was well dosed with SeaFoam before it went to sleep for the winter. In a couple of more days of commuting to work, I should have the tank empty and be able to give her a nice drink of fresh gas. It is going to take a lot more work to get my left arm back into riding shape after the injuries from last month. I still can not hold in the clutch for a whole red light but a month ago I could not pull in the clutch at all. And yes being the stubborn one that I am, I have been avoiding seeing a Dr about it. I am hoping that in another week I can start pulling the trailer around some to get used to it being back there before I make the epic (for me) trek to Ohio in June. I have started to pay attention to my location in the lane and pretending that I am pulling the trailer. But the bottom line is that my PMS is doing a lot better now.

They are in good enough shape for someone who might be down on there luck and can use a set. Let me know if you get wind of anyone.   5. Sorry Ol' buddy, but we're sending more :snow2::snow2: your way! It's snowing here now and we're supposed to get 5+ inches by midnight with a foot or more in the higher Black Hills. Lots of wind too... The critters have all hidden in the barn and the dog won't even go outside:cold::cold: I'm so ready for SUMMER!
  6. I just don't get it. Maybe it's an age thing? Maybe someone can explain it to me, without getting into an arguing match. I see thread after thread about how the wind is touching someone, and they want to get it off. Gargantuan windshields, upper deflectors, lower deflectors, side deflectors, leg deflectors...etc... Part of riding a motorcycle is that feeling of freedom, and getting a little wind in your face. Without the wind, it seems like you might as well be in a cage. I don't want a pi$$ing match. I just thought I might be able to discuss this with friends, and maybe understand it a little better, that's all.

  9. Hey all, Love the site, except that it steals hours away from me as I spend too much time reading through years worth of very helpful threads. I picked up my 02 RSV about three weeks ago. After 1,500 miles I'm loving it more every day. My wife loves it at least as much as I. There is just one issue I'm hoping you folks can help with. The wife isn't enjoying the wind at highway speeds. According to her, she is getting knocked around a lot worse than she does on the back of my Volusia which only has a small shield to keep the wind off my chest. So here are the details. The shield on my RSV is 17inches tall and 23 wide. She is 5'8 and weighs about 105. I'm 5'7 and weigh a bit more than I should. She enjoys the very little wind on her legs (especially in the cold weather), but gets pounded on the upper body and head. I'm thinking that the wind is being deflected over\around me and directly into her. I ride as long as it is above 20 degrees. At that temp I find my lower back getting cold which further makes me think the wind is wrapping around me. The front of my body stays comfortable. Do other folks passengers experience such a rough time with the wind? Any suggestions on how to make the spouse's ride more comfortable? Thanks Muchly, Dan.

  11. Found this old thread. How many are using this? Is it worth the money? One thingI noticed with my RSV is I wish at time, especially riding solo It would be nice to not have to toggle thru and turn the IC volume down, only to turn back up when I am 2up.   12. I'm looking for options to add heating elements inside my 2nd gen bars so I can keep my existing Kury grips. For those cold weather riders that have them, what did you go with? BTW, they don't need to work on days like today where the temp is -17...-45 wind chill in ND!
  13. Ok, I finally got around to replacing my original wind screen on my '84 with a new one from Cee Bailey. Got one 2" shorter than stock for a better line of sight over the screen. I've been using Plexus all the time to fight the swirls in the old one but after riding several of my friends bikes I really liked NOT seeing anything in front of me. I like clear. Now I have clear. Ok, so what I'm up to is this. I'm cutting the old screen down, a lot, to be not much more that 6" to 8" higher than the top of the fairing. Real short for those really hot days on summer. Get a lil wind in the face kind of thing. I want to try to apply the window tint film on the inside. I've done several cars and vans with the kits so I'm pretty handy with the stuff. And cutting it that short I get rid of the compound curve so that should make it pretty easy. The question is......anybody know if there might be any weird reaction with the screen and the adhesive on the film? I've read the posts on the spray tints but want to try the film to make sure I keep an even appearance. My only concern with the film is keeping the edges bonded to the surface but that can be covered with some flexible trim along the top edge. Thanks for any imput. Mike
  14. Think I'd rather have snow right now. We have a fire that's been burning for several days not far from us....and it was deliberately lit!!! We couldn't sleep last night as the smoke was really bad. Fire fighters working 12 hour shifts, and the wind is creating big problems for them. I'd like to get hold of the lousy buggers...I'd give them burn!!!:mad:
  15. I'm still trying to get used to my "new" ride (only had it for three weeks), and I'm a little concerned about how the bike behaves "at speed" on the superslab. Just putting around the back roads and city streets the bike is fine, but when I'm out on the superslab the bike is all over the place and it gets worse when the wind is blowing, or when I get blasted by another vehicle's slip stream. What freaks me out is this bike gets blown around more than my Harley Sportster, and the Sportster is 200 pounds lighter than the Venture. Another thing I've noticed is the bike is real sensitive to steering inputs (leaning into turns). The only way I can think of to describe this is to say the bike is 'twitchy,' almost like the center of gravity is off (higher than it should be ?). At first I thought the tire pressures were too low, but both front and rear are at 32 psi as per the label in the travel trunk. I realize that with the fairing, wind shield and such this bike has more "sail area," but this behavior is real scary, and I have a feeling it will get worse once I have a passenger onboard. Is this an inherent charistaric of the breed, am I just too light for this bike (I tip the scales at 140# or so) or is there something seriously wrong? TIA... Y'All Ride Safe....

I wanted to see how effective the electric windshield and the pop out side louvers do in -10C weather Took the scoot for a 50 km ride, I was impressed with the wind protection but 50kms would it max.I was wearing Felt jeans and a Joe Rocket jacket with the inner lining. Most of the wind I noticed was blowing on the pelvic area. I should have wore my ski-doo suit The hands got cold even with my Ski-doo gloves .Im going to get the Suzuki Storm Hand Guards that attach to the handle bars. Now I have to get a Block Heater and Studs onto the tires and Training Wheels
  17. After I installed leveling links it seem that my Venture has become very sensitive to the wind. Anybody experience this?
  18. hello everyone. i just purchased a 2000 venture and i have a few questions. i love the bike and after i took my wife for a ride in the country and then on the freeway, she was fine under 60 mph but over that she is getting beat to death with the wind. the windshield on the bike is a show chrome after market windshield. my question is, is the windshield need to be taller or lower. i am 6'6'' and 230 lbs. I have a yamaha raider also and she don't complain about the wind on it. but on the venture she sets up higher. how can i correct the problem. the windshield is 13'' tall from chrome trim at the bottom of the windshield to the top of the shield. and it is 31'' wide. any help would be appriciated
  19. So we've been planning this biking/camping trip since last spring. Bought a trailer, bought all the camping gear we'd need, made our plans and a few reservations, checked the weather forecast, loaded up and headed out Sep 4th early AM. First stop Osoyoos, BC for 3 nights/2 days of camping in one of BC's "hot spots". Booked a spot right next to the lake. Planned to soak up the sun, swimming, rent a sea-doo, go trail riding... blah blah.... and it all went downhill from here. The wind was so bad we could barely pitch our tent. Sand was blowing into everything. We slept overnight and in the morning the wind was still blowing and picking up so down came the tent and we headed out. Rode into Trail and stayed a night in a motel, visited some relatives and headed out the next morning. Weather wasn't too bad up to this point but that would be the last we'd see of the sun and any warmth for the next several days. We were bundled up pretty good to keep warm and dry and rode the Nelson, Balfour ferry, Creston route in cloudy, cool, and some rain ending up in Cranbrook, BC. Original plan was to camp over here for a couple nights but, no such luck as it was still cloudy, a bit of rain, and quite cool so, another night in a motel. Left Cranbrook the next morning and headed north to Radium, thru the park to Banff and on to Calgary. Again, the weather just wasn't with us so into a motel we go and stayed over a couple nights to visit friends. Poured rain the first night and all the next day so we decided to rent a car to get around .... just our crappy luck all they had was a Mustang convertible...oh well lol. Original plan was to ride to Biggar Sask to visit Nina's mom, stopping over at Drumheller but considering the weather forecast, we elected to leave the bike and trailer in Calgary and take the rented car. Due to this added cost, we also shortened our trip there and went straight to biggar, only stopping there for 2 nights, then back to Calgary. For most of that leg of the trip it was cloudy, rainy and quite cool although we did hit a bit of sun on the way back to Calgary and enjoyed riding with the top down on the car (for about an hour). Back in Calgary we stayed another night in the motel and lit out the next morning, heading south to Fort MacLeod and then west towards Cranbrook, ending up in Creston for the night. This had to be the worst part of the trip and probably the worst riding I've ever experienced. From Ft MacLeod onwards thru to Pincher Creek and Coleman, the wind was so bad I could barely keep the bike in my own lane of the highway. At one point we dropped down into a gully and across a bridge and as we were going down the hill, the sign said "Caution - Extreme Wind gusts". Now, I've ridden this route many times and have never hit wind like this and when we crossed that bridge, a gust of wind nearly knocked us right off the road. It was about all I could do to maintain some level of control over the bike.... totally scared the crap out of both of us. Left Creston the next morning and headed for Osoyoos once again, the plan being that if we didn't have some nice weather, we'd just continue on home. If we did, we'd look for a place to camp. Luck was with us as most of that ride was in nice weather. We were finally able to shed some of our several layers of clothing and get back to just jeans and riding jacket. The weather in Osoyoos was great! Mostly sunny and fairly warm so we started looking for a suitable camping spot, finally finding a great little government camp ground (8 camping spots) along side of a lake (Vaseau Lake sp? for those who know the area) and just one spot was left...and it had our name on it. So finally we got to utilize all our camping gear and the weather held out for us for a few days and we got to kick back and relax. We decided to head for home on Thursday (yesterday) as according to the forecast, it would be the last relatively nice day and we didn't want to be riding home in crappy weather. The ride home was great until about an hour away ... then we hit rain and by the time we got to our doorstep, it was coming down pretty good. Since we were so close, we didn't even bother to put our raingear on... just decided to keep on going even if we did get wet. Surprisingly, we barely got wet at all...just a little dampness on our knees and shins. All-in-all it was quite the memorable trip and Nina & I are still married!   21. It has been a month since I picked up my 02 Goldwing trike. I've ridden it 3,000 miles in that time and truly enjoy it. I'm waiting for a taller windshield to arrive which will help with the wind buffeting. This has been my biggest complaint. It has a stock windshield and I sit tall so this should remedy the problem. I also installed baker airwings and plan to get the wings for the mirrors. Sunday I rode 10 1/2 hours and was more tired from the wind as I rode interstate the whole way. It is so easy to ride and takes a ton of stress out of riding. I'm pleased with the purchase.

  23. Let me start off by saying I'm having a great time. The riding has been spectacular even today when I rode in 3 hours of rain. This being Independance Day long weekend, I have had my challeges getting a camping spot but it always worked out. Night two I was deperite after getting turned away from two camp sites. I saw a farm house that was storing trailers. So I did a door knock and introduced myself and asked if I could camp by the trailers. The man said sure and called his wife who said I could even use his shower outside in his workshop for $15. I thanked them very much and set up camp. I did have to clean the shower as I don't think it had been used in over 5 years. Cob webs and moths all over, but it worked great. So here is my story of my fourth night camping at a KOA in Goodland Kansas. Let me first say that this is a very clean and well kept facility. Well this is earlier then I would like to wake up without an alarm. Real bad storm. A few times I thought the wind was either going to lift the tent off the ground or break it into pieces. I was awake when I heard noises and people at 1am. I didn't know what they where doing. My pee jug was getting full from my second time. I cautiously open the tent a little to dump it out and the ground was covered in water. Only about an inch. The people that I heard where other tenters that got flooded or their tent torn apart. They got in their truck and spinning tires to get out. I laid in bed not able to go back to sleep. The rain was so hard but the tent was doing well. The wind was what concerned me. I was afraid the tent would get damaged and I wouldn't be able to close it. There goes the next 3.5 weeks I was thinking. My mind wasn't stopping should I cut my losses or tuff it out. A lull in the weather happened. *Good time to break camp I thought. Don't be a chicken I thought. So there I laid. The storm picked up again, eaqually as bad. I checked outside by unzipping the door a few inches. Now there was 2 inches of water all over the ground. It kept comming down and blowing so hard that I thought I may damage the tent trying to put it away. At 2:15am I checked outside and there was almost 3 inches of rain water on the ground. That was it, only an inch or two more and my changing area will be under water. I started to pack things up inside the trailer so when there was a lull in the weather I would be ready to spring into action. I made a mental list of what I needed to do outside to close the tent quickly and without damaging it. There I sat bed deflated belongings packed away and waiting. 2:30, the rain slowed right down and wind wasn't so strong and gusty. Like a lion saving their cubs I was out and moving. Lucky I had my boots the trailer skirting was all under water. The gravel road was covered. No hesitation I had to act to get this tent down and closed before another wind gust would come and rip it out of my hand. I kept seeing flash news reports of times past of bad things happening in trailer parks. Everything went smooth. The tent got put away safely. I put the cargo carrier on the picknic table as the water drains thru. What a relief. I may be a chicken and over reacted, but I kept thinking it could get worse and then where would I be. It's only sleep I'm missing out on by packing up. If the weather breaks in the morning I'll set it back up to dry and sleep. If I have to stay another night that's ok too. My tent us not broken.   25. We have a few glitches to work out, sorry if this has already been covered. We have a zumo, Q2 multiset, and a 2 iphones and our bikes are a rstd and 1100 v-star. We had no trouble pairing my Q2 with the zumo and then the iphone and the 2nd Q2 with my wifes iphone. If we're out on our own they work flawlessly, great reception to the zumo or phone, we're very pleased. When we're riding together Deb's is clear but can hear my stereo over the q2. Certain songs just have to be loud On my end I hear a lot of wind coming from her system. Enough that it prevents the system from going to standby. Deb's windshield is lower and doesn't have the same protection from the wind as I do. We need to lessen that effect?? Any suggestions? Next the zumo won't give voice commands to the headset when we're together and lastly after a stop and the zumo powers back up we can't talk bike to bike. By fluke we discovered if I try to make a phone call using the zumo and hang up, the intercom then works? We deactivated voice activation on Deb's q2 which allowed the systems to go to standby when there's a break in conversation. It would be nice to get the voice commands and lessen the wind buffeting. We have e-mailed cardo about the wind problem but haven't recieved a reply as of yet. Has anyone had any of these problems? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Mark
