  1. Realizing that most of us with any sense ride rice burners, my son has a 2002 Superglide Harley, carborated, and his gas tank has sprung a leak. Buying a new one cost too much on a marine's paycheck, especially since he just found out this week he will be a daddy again (boy this time). Any ideas where we might be able to find a used tank? Do they have junk yards, etc for motorcycles? I know I'm scratching in the dark, but what the heck. You guys and gals have come through before I thought I would try again. Thanks.
  2. Argh.. I have the bike tuned up, oil, air, plugs and synch'd and today experienced yet another mysterious shut down while riding.. First time was a few days ago while cruising 70 mph in 4th.. it simply switched off.. Pulled over.. started up again and everything was fine. 3/4 tank of gas, no incident with the next 5 tank fulls and 4 days.. Earlier today while doing errands, in city streets, the bike up and quit again.. huh? Wait a few secs on the side of the road and flashed it up OK and no probs riding it after that.. Highway, back roads and so forth.. In both instances I did not 'accidentally' hit the kill switch. The bike simply died. When it dies, it's almost feeling like the engine isn't making power and then nuttin.. bleh, dead. I'm heading out on a road trip to PA this sunday, I'd really like to know what gives.. Is it possible it's shutting down due to a thermal shut down switch or something? Engine getting too hot? I have plenty of green fluid in the bike.. though I seriously doubt it's ever been flushed since 06 (I'm the 3rd owner)..
  3. I have an 08 RSV and was wondering if anyone ever had any success removing the tank bib that comes with the bike? I am getting a custom paint job done and would like to remove the bib. Any help or advice will be appreciated.
  4. Im curious in what you have in your tank bags??
  5. Ok so now everything is back to normal.. (I'm posting this in case someone out there has the same rare occurrance as I had.. and that this may help them in the future.. ) Initial problem was that I ran out of fuel while still carrying the reserve amount.. This happened twice in a 2 week period. Petcock set to ON and the bike stuttered with 2 fuel bars showing.. switched to RES on the petcock and the bike died.. poof. When subsequently fueling up, it's discovered that the bike still had a reserve amount of fuel.. It would not feed from the RES position on the petcock (yes, it was indeed in correct position as per etc) There was no F on the ODO nor was there the amber low fuel warning light.. just the stutter of the engine indicating a low fuel issue but the bike would not feed from the reserve fuel in the tank when the petcock was on RES. Testing at home showed that the fuel would drain from the petcock from the ON position and when the flow stopped, it would indeed resume when petcock set to RES position, just as it should.. but didn't when I ran out of fuel twice on the road.. So this problem did not make sense. When the tank was drained from the petcock, the F on the ODO nor the amber fuel light came on.. huh. Ok something is not working. A few calls to service dept yielded such things as witchcraft and pulling stumps out with a wet herring.. No idea what they were talking about.. I doubt they knew either. What caused the problem? Well guesses are that sludge might have blocked the RES port on the petcock, preventing the fuel from flowing to the engine. But when I pulled the petcock off the tank, the standpipes on the petcocks were clean as a whistle and the inside of the tank showed no signs of dirt or sludge.. So ok, the petcock is working as advertised up to this point. The VENT tube at the top of the tank is cleared and passing air so that's not blocked causing a vacuum. The Fuel meter on the dashboard indicates proper fuel levels and shows it full and decreasing as you put miles on the bike.. So the float is working.. I changed the fuel filter on spec. On examining the fuel filter, it was as it should be after a year of use.. nothing dramatic or un-normal about it.. I had disconnected the battery at this time as I had other electrical work to fix on the stereo under the main fairing.. I pulled the tank off the bike to change the spark plugs and at that time, 'swished' the tank with clean fuel and drained it.. upside down and sideways, listening to hear anything bopping around loose in there but all was good. When the bike was put back together again, with 10 litres of fuel added to the tank, and ignition turned on, the fuel pump could be heard ticking away filling up the bowls and lines and the bike's engine fired up as it should.. Fuel levels were showing on the gauge and the bike was put away for the evening. This morning, with a jerry can strapped to the back seat of the bike, I set off to test if I would get proper function of the fuel system or a repeat of the last time. And at two bars showing on the fuel gauge, the F on the ODO showed up and 3 or 4 miles later the low fuel amber light came on, just as it was supposed to. And I added just over 16 litres of fuel into the tank, JUST as it should.. so everything is back to normal.. A subsequent fuel run gave me the same results.. seems I can now rely again on the low fuel indicating system.. But the big question is what the heck happened to cause the problem in the first place?! I basically ran out of fuel as I was unable to feed from the reserve fuel in the tank.. Here's what I'm guessing and let me know if any of this makes sense or not.. (A) there was sludge in the tank but it got 'swished' out and now all is good.. (B) the fuel filter was probably actually dirtier than I had thought and replacing it fixed the problem.. © or more interestingly, perhaps the bike's fuel management computer pooped out a while back and was reset when I disconnected the battery.. In other words, a set condition was met when the fuel float got down to a certain level, failing to activate the pump or signaling the system that the bike is actually dry and not having any reserve fuel.. or something like that.. The reason I mention © is that the stereo system on the bike was giving me probs all spring long where as the bars had to be turned to the right in order to make any channel changes, though the volume works all the time.. I pulled the fairing to find the cable going from the hand controller on the left bar was trapped under a bundle around the steering neck and when the bars were to the left, applied a weird pressure on the cable causing it to not work.. go figure.. Once I released that cable to the top of the bundle, the control unit works perfectly.. ... And also to mention that on a recent road trip, the Cruise Control would sometimes deactivate when hitting a large bump.. Perhaps there was something electrical causing all this BS in the first place and all I needed to do was reset 'something' by disconnecting the battery?! Anyway.. if anyone ever finds themselves in this kind of situation, drop me a line.. I've been through it.. Hopefully I might be able to save you some time in trouble shooting. Thanks to all who submitted helpful suggestions.. Cheers
  6. Well I ordered a tank bib from "Talisman Leather products" in Canada. Good people to work with and the product is well made. $105. CDN / $92.95 U.S. for studded. Got it put on but had to remove both cable holders for it to fit proper. After that I just did not care for the cable being put back on the tank with the little rubber holders. I got with my sister and this is what we came up with. I could not have done it without her. She works with leather a little but this was her first attempt at something like this. I have the little rubber holder put on with two sided tape. What ya think? Have a great 4th of JULY.
  7. I came across a 2002 Midnight with 25K miles on it. Appears to be in excellent conditiion and knowing where it came from, I'm sure it it. It has several added options including tank bid, luggage rack etc... The guy priced it at $8350.00 . Question is what is an 02 Midnight worth?
  8. Does anyone have a beverage/cup holder that doesn't hit the tank with steering at full turn? Where did you get it? Thanks!!!
  9. Hey everyone, I am relocating the TCI on top of the Air Box. My ride an 89 Venture. I rerouted the wires to allow for enough clearance, but I cannot get enough clearance to comfortably put the false tank back on without real stressing the false tank. The best fit I have gotten so far is the TCI sitting atop the airbox, ear touching the battery ( I have a little extra room in the batter box because I installed the Odesy), connectors facing the left side fairing (The AM-FM Side). If I cut the ears off the box, I think I will have it. However, I am reluctant to do this, unless I am going to be successful in my relocation. HELP anyone who has done this.
  10. Question for anyone using a tank bag. I'd like to use a tank bag on my upcoming long trip with my 04 RSV. I'm curious if the magnets will be an issue with the plug and holder mount on the side of the tank. Seems this would keep a magnet from making good contact.
  11. I am installing a Garmin Street Pilot III on a 2005 RSV. Where is the other end of the drivers 5 pin DIN connector ? Under tank ? under Seat ? or in the fairing ? Thanks Dave N.
  12. I went to install my new ignition switch this am. Figured no more than an hour tops. Took off the seat, tank and disconnected the wires. Looked closely and saw the "security" bolts. WTF??? Real nice.....I walked away for an hour then approached it with a better frame of mind. Whipped out the trusty dremel, cut a slot in the head and whacked it out with an impact screwdriver. Took a few good whacks. Discovered that there is also blue loctite on those headless bolts. Since I have the Barons risers, the stock leftover handlebar bolts fit perfectly. At the time I was cursing out the genius at Yamaha who came up with this brilliant idea. Later on I thought about it. If I wanted to aquire someones real nice. maybe new, fully decked out RSV all I would have to do is to spring for a new switch, remove the seat and tank, unbolt the switch and install the new one complete with keys! 10 minutes and im off.........Still not sold on the idea but at least I can now understand the reasoning behind it..maybe.....
  13. Ok folks.. I've gotten a lot of work done to the bike today and here's what I discovered and I'm STILL puzzled by the WTF factor lol.. wow 2006 Midnight Special, 36,900 miles on it.. (NO warranty on it at all.. don't ask, there isn't any) Initial problem was that when the fuel level got to the reserve level (around 3 bars or less) and the bike starts to choke, I would select RES and the bike dies, though it is confirmed to still have it's reserve fuel amount (yes, the level is properly selected to RES, not off, not ON). Once the bike is refueled, and lever set to ON from RES, it will start once again with full choke on and then all is good as normal.. Once was a fluke, twice is a problem so I had to start working on it.. Everything is fine but the bike wouldn't give me an F on the fuel or a yellow light.. just cough and die when I would select to RES. SO, this would indicate a blocked standpipe in the tank.. I drained the fuel with the level set to "ON" and let it go until it stopped.. then selected RES where I would assume nothing would flow but Huh?? It flowed full force again.. what the heck? This is contrary to what I was getting on the road.. twice!! I pulled the petcock out of the tank to examine it, expecting to see sludge or what ever.. brilliantly clear and clean.. the fuel drained from the bike was clean.. I took a lint free cloth to wipe a little bit of the inside of the tank to see if there was a sludge coating or something at the bottom of the tank and nothing.. all clean.. well then.. what gives? With the ignition turned ON, and absolutely no fuel in the tank, the fuel gauge reads nothing but there is no empty fuel light or F on the odo.. I removed the tank from the bike to change the spark plugs and gave it a roll over to swish it out a bit and hoping to hear the fuel level float inside but didn't hear it.. I would assume it's working as it does indicate fuel amount.. The local Yamaha dealership suggested that I have the interior of the tank "steam cleaned" at the local radiator shop to make sure no gunk or junk is left inside.. But I hesitate on that one for obvious reasons.. and no one here has ever heard of "Heat" or H33T what ever it's called.. I pulled the fuel filter out (ever pull the teeth out of an elephant from it's rear? this is similar!) and it didn't show any odd signs of contamination so it got replaced on spec anyway.. All the fuel lines were 'puff tested' to make sure they were clear and not blocked (spit, caff caff) And the vent line as well at the top of the tank.. So now, the only thing left is to swish the tank again with clean fuel to catch maybe perhaps something else that might in there.. and try this test all over again.. Can someone confirm that when I put fuel back into the tank and turn the ignition ON, I should indeed hear the pump tick tick tick as it fills the lines again? Is this correct and that failure to hear the pump might indicate a fuel pump malfunction? Or is it possible then I am possibly looking at a 'computer' problem?? Later today, I will run the bike with it's new filters (air & fuel), spark plugs and such and see what happens.. I'll run it in RES and ON mode to see if that makes a prob.. The only prob if I can't resolve this fuel issue is that I will have to ensure I refuel just as I hit 3 bars as then I don't know when I will 'run out of fuel' as it were, while still carrying a reserve amount that I can't access.. Any of this sound familiar to you guys? Any thoughts or ideas? Man.. what a day!! Cheers
  14. Ok, this has happened to me twice and now I'm at a loss as to what to do.. Allow me to describe the issue and hopefully someone can come up with a viable suggestion. On two occasions, I've basically run out of fuel, without a low fuel light, with the petcock in the RUN position (long end of lever DOWN). When the bike started to chug chug as it does when hitting the reserve levels, turning the petcock to RES (long end of lever vertically UP), the engine cough sputters and dies. The fuel quantity gauge shows 2 or 3 bars.. On both occasions, I've put a measured amount of fuel into the gas tank and refilled at the nearest gas station to a total amount of roughly 16L.. which means, the gas tank had more than it's Reserve Fuel quantity still in it, but unavailable! Whoa.. what gives? Books says it's a 22.5 litre tank with a 3.5 reserve.. so when I hit reserve, I should be at the 19 litre mark, right? In another thread, it was suggested to remove the petcock and check see if the system was working properly.. Unfortunately I haven't the location to start pulling such parts off the bike.. But I was able to perform a quick trouble shooting test.. but with unfamiliar results. The problem encountered would suggest that when I get to the reserve fuel amount, turning the petcock to RES results in fuel NOT making it to the engine and starving the engine of fuel.. Ahh OK.. so lets do a quick test here.. The fuel tank is FULL at this point.. My assumption is that there might be a problem with the RES fuel feed at the petcock but not fully understanding how it works nor having a proper diagram/drawing of what it looks like, I am assuming that there is something blocking the fuel feed when the petcock is in the RES position.. However, with a full tank of gas, when I put the petcock to RES with the fuel line disconnected, I observe a full stream of fuel passing through the petcock indicating to me that there is no blockage... Unless perhaps the system permits fuel from a FULL tank of gas to by pass a blocked RES feed path at the petcock (dunno if this makes sense the way I am explaining it) Am I doing this wrong whereas I really need to empty the tank with the petcock turn to the ON position, and then turn the petcock to see if there is a blockage? Dang I wish I had a garage to play in..
  15. Don't think I've seen this anywhere, and inquiring minds want to know. Literature says we have a 6 gallon tank. So I went to the gas station with a short piece of fuel hose and a gas can. When I got there, held the bike vertical and drained the tank from the petcock. Refilled it from the gas pump. 5.5 gallons. Now I (we) know.
  16. Hi, I'm new so hope I'm doing this right. Anyway, I just finished taking the back end of my 85 apart to get the gas tank out as I have a fuel leak. I drained the tank (lots of rust bits came out) and filled it with water to see if I could find the leak. So far it does not appear to be leaking. The only reason I went after the tank was that I lose 1/2 tank of fuel in about two days with the petcock closed. Anyone know where else it could be leaking? The sending unit does not appear to be leaking and the petcock is brand new (changed it last fall as I thought it was leaking). Anyone else run into this? Could it be a seam that opens when the temp changes? Although I put cold water in and now the sun has heated it up pretty good. Anyone try the POR-15 products to clean and seal their tanks? Anyone know where a good used dealer is that I could buy one from? Thanks, Ian
  17. hello, im new to post here and am trying to figure out where the hose marked carb on the charcoal canister goes as there is no fittin on the carb for this hose that i can see. The hose routing is marked on a sticker on the tank and does say "to carb". The other two hoses are marked atmosphere and tank and they are hook up already. Just cant find the fitting for the hose that needs to run to the carb. I do have a 1983 VR and it doesn't have the canister so i cant look at to compare. Any help would be great. The bike im working on is a 1985 VR. Thanks Shawn
  18. As many of you know, the cover where I want to mount a map holder is plastic. I just spent more than a couple of hours looking at websites that have many different types and styles and none seemed "Venture Friendly" to me. So - anyone have a recommendation on brand/make/model of "tank luggage" you like for your first gen that has a map window on it? Thanks for your time!!! Larry
  19. There has to be an award for this goof!!!! I decided to go for a ride today and needed to fuel up about 50km's or so from home. When I stopped at the pump a guy started chatting to me so not really paying attention I filled my tank with Diesel fuel! When I went inside one of the young girls said to me "does your bike take diesel" I hadn't noticed the 3/4" Diesel letters on the pump or Diesel written on the nozzle cover with a black pen!! I owned a diesel Jetta a few years ago and always looked for the green nozzle and clearly marked separate pump. This one had regular gas on one side and diesel on the other. So need less to say panic set in.... I pushed it to the side and and got my hands on a gas can and drained it all out....took off the tank and got every last drop out. So if anyone is curious it took 21.475 liters (5.67 gallons) with the tank completely drained. One good thing.....I installed a Talon alarm last week and wasn't in the mood to remove the tank to run the wire for the indicator light.....that job is done now!! Just call me Dumba$$ Keith
  20. Has anyone found a good tank bag/large bib with a map pocket (clear plastic cover) on top. For an RSTD. I'm avoiding getting a GPS, which probably says I'm old fashioned.
  21. Has anyone found a harmless, yet effective manner in which to remove the darn sticker they put on the gas tank that says read the manual, wear a helmet, and good luck getting this off??? I am anti-tank damage when it comes to getting this thing off. I cannot believe in this day and age of static stickers and technology that they would not have a better way. Any and all advice is welcome!
  22. So There i was, home for the weekend. Dad and I are trying to get my bike streetable. It was a salvage bike xvz1300 m/m. I got it torn down. Tank off, fairing off, lights off, seats off. I replaced the headlight bulb, air filters, and battery. I took off the trunk (was destroyed) and removed the six disc and six disc cable. I removed the antenna for the CB and the CB from under the trunk. I then tested the radio system (what was left front speakers). The radio worked fine (even though the control is cracked). I then proceeded to take the cable from the rear of the bike and re-routed it (being extremely careful). i took it all the way out to the gas tank mount and routed it on the other side of the battery. Then dad and i went to his work and machined a nice bracket to mount the antenna down on the crossmember between the saddlebags from a chunk of aluminum. I put the lights fairing seat gas tank and EVERYTHING else back on the bike. I start it up to check it out (started AWESOME) and the radio ................. didn't work. It turned on, and....... Static.. FRIGGIN STATIC, So then ithought well ill try other stations. .NOTHING. static... So i touched the antenna and the tone of the static changed indicating that the antenna was still attached. So after 2 days of work and feeling damn good about myself, excited abotu riding.. and now i have to tear it apart to find out why. DO you have any idea why?
  23. Guy is seling localy this Venture and ad said is 99 venture. Can someone identify this bike by the badge on gas tank. I don't thik 99 is coming in midnight version. Or could be just painted. As far I can see is missing gas tank trim, and there is no studs on seat. As well hinges on sadlebag is blacked out.
  24. Anyone have a set of original black bolt covers for the 2nd gen front fuel tank bolts? I'm looking for a set. Thanks in advance.
  25. http://www.starmotorcycles.com/assets/accessories/250/str4xy492000-250.jpg Has Anyone ever used this mini tank cover on their 2nd Gens? I am rubbing the paint off of my tank where my knees ride against it and need something to put a stop to it. Pros and Cons? Thanks,Tom
