  1. Does anyone have a 2nd gen stator lying around that they could measure the maximum outside diameter for me? I know a couple of you here have replaced the stator in this engine. Still have your old spare handy?
  2. Amid all the other stuff going on around here, I did finally find a couple of hours to work on the bike today. Got the new Avons mounted on Thursday evening so that was done already. A while back, I switched from XM to Sirius and hadn't gotten around yet to redoing the power supply for the radio on the bike. So...I split the fairing an replaced the XM power cable with the Sirius. While I had things apart, I went ahead and replaced the Pioneer speakers with a pair of Polk DB401. I have a set for the rear also but am no hurry on them. Last year on the way to Vogel I lost one of my front lower air deflectors. I finally got around to ordering a new set of Diamond R Accessories polished stainless deflectors and they came today so I went ahead and installed them also. I tell you, I had seen these on some other bikes but had forgotten how nice they are. Truly quality work. So....the bike is ready I think. Only thing I haven't yet done this year is ...uh...actually ride it. Maybe tomorrow.
  3. I just wanted to say thank you to everyone at VentureRider, for you help, answers and recommendations, I just finish with my bike. I replaced the handle bars with the Flanders, new brake lines and cables, they work fantastic. At 5'7" now I do not have to reach forward anymore. I used the complete OEM grips assembly and they worked out perfectly. I replaced the OEM mufflers with a pair of Harley touring ones (without drilling anything out) I picked up on e-bay. I used the 31-9920 clamps and they are perfect. A friend manufactured the bracket out of aluminum and polished it too. Everything went on just as I have read here. Now I have the sound I was looking for. Yes here are the pictures. Thanks again everyone!! BTW thank you to also Don for your help as well as the site. I do not know of anyone other than another Venture Rider can tell that anything was done. Mission accomplished.
  4. That you would like to get out of your way? I am looking for a Second Gen Trunk. I know in 99 when I got my 99 Venture there was a problem with the trunks cracking and many were able to get them replaced. I was wondering if anyone had an old one that they would be willing to part with. Let me know if you have anything you could part with. Thanks! John
  5. My buddy is suddenly having a little bad luck. First the ignition needs replacing. See previous post. Now it seems that the sensor for the fan is not working. The fan itself works, however when the bike gets real hot, the fan will not come on. Dealer says the sensor is gone and needs to be replaced. Apparantly from what he understood, he has to buy the whole fan assembly (fan and sensor) and guess how much??????? $355.00. What is Yamaha trying to do to their customers? Sure sounds like price gouging to me. Is there an aftermarket available? Can only the sensor be replaced? Help. Trust you guys and gals. Sure can't trust the dealers and or Yamaha. Thanks everyone.
  6. Anyone got fishtail exhaust on their ride? been playing around with putting em on my TD, and was also wondering if anyone has replaced the stock tips with any aftermarket to any degree of success
  7. I have replaced the seals in the front forks for the last three years on my 1987 Venture standard, I went out this morning and found that the left seal had leaked again. I took it up to the mechcanic that did the work on it last year and he can't figure it out either. He said the bushings were good last year when he replaced the seals. He said he used the seals Yamaha reccomended( K&S I beleive). I am stumped any one have this type of problems , I sure could use some help.
  8. according to one of my magazines, a yamaha source said the new vmax is coming. yamaha wants to be sure it is exactly right before it's release. they want to out do the new b-king. i still say the vmax will be the test bed for the engine for the royalstar replacement all new tourer of the future for yamaha. the venture is becoming archaic by todays touring standards, and do to be replaced. look for 1800, v4, aluminum frame, fuel injection, advanced styling, and much more. this is probably why they haven't improved on the rsv. it's just holding over to be replaced by something totally new. thats just my guess.
  9. I was wondering if anyone has had this problem. Yamaha does not seem to be able to fix it so far. I have an 06 RSV with 30,000km that has just developed a clicking noise in the rear end. It only occurs when the bike is rolled backwards and only when the components are hot. Yamaha has dismantled the differential (rear end) replaced a suspect bearing, checked all the clearances but can not find anything wrong. I told them about the drive pin clearance/lubrication issues (discussed on this web site) however they believe the noise is coming from the differential. They are reluctant to replace the differential becauase they have already replaced two correcting another problem. This problem was not evident until the new differential had done over 1,000km. Has anyone heard of this problem?
  10. NEWTrk wants to replace the stock grips with some new ones that are a little bigger in diameter. If you have replaced your grips he is looking for some reviews of what you replaced your stock grips with, and if you the replacements them or not. BTW - We're in Oklahoma so he is not looking at heated grips. Thanks in advance....
  11. I didn't know where else to put this. If anyone's interested, I have an OEM windshield that I no longer need, since I just replaced it with a Clearview. Don, let me know if this should go somewhere else. Thanks.
  12. Well, if you read this thread you know about the problems I was having with my 2nd Gen. Well I finally took it to the dealer, because I had some warranty work to be done on it anyway. I finally got them (after a call to Yamaha myself) to replace my warped brake rotor under warranty, and they replaced my fuel petcock. When taking the bike in, I kinda figured they'd assume all of my engine troubles could be traced back to the faulty petcock, and they did. They replaced it, changed out the plugs for me, cleaned and re-synced the carbs (they did say they were off a tad), and replaced a couple hoses that had crud in them from the petcock going bad. I got the bike back last Monday (a week ago) and it seemed to run much better. However, after riding it off and on all week, my problems are back. The engine seems to simply load up, like it's still getting too much gas. In fact, at times you can smell unburnt gas. I did find out that if I'm going down the road and it loads up on me and runs like garbage, if I shut the fuel off at the petcock (which now works properly) and let the thing almost die before turning the gas back on, the problems clear right up and it runs fine again. So it definitely seems like too much gas is the problem. Now what's causing the problems is another mystery. So, I'm going to call the service manager back today and talk to him about it, though I'm pretty sure what he's going to tell me... that my carbs need re-jetted. He told me when I picked it up that they did some kind of test with the exhaust and said it was running slightly rich, but not enough to effect the running of the engine. To be honest, I doubt they ever even took it for a ride further than around the parking lot. So now, if I take it in and they re-jet it, I'm sure that's out of my pocket, and still no guarantee it's going to fix my problem. Could that lead to smelling un-burnt gas? Maybe there is an issue with my choke, though looking over the exterior mechanisms of it, it appears to be in working order. So I don't know... Any thoughts?
  13. My neighbor, who parts out and fixes up older bikes for a living (pretty good at it, too), has an 81 or 82 920 Virago for sale.A little over 12k on it, looks great, carbs done, tune up, general check out. Runs great, 90% rear tire (ME880), front probably needs replaced, foam grips, Jardine exhaust. PM me if interested. In Indianapolis on SE side in Shelby County. He's asking $1500.
  14. Ok Jeff called and asked me to post this question. Can the glass in the left side mirror on the first gen be replaced? Evidently it's cracked on his bike. Margaret
  15. I am having trouble with bleeding the front brakes on my wife's 2005 V-Star classic. I replaced the upper brake hose. The one from the master res. on the handle bar to the splitter. Neither of the banjo's are leaking. I replaced the fluid till it ran clear through both caliper bleeders. Now the fluid runs clear but the lever still has no back pressure. It just travels right to the handle bar. Its almost as if the piston in the master cly. is not full, and yet it pushes the fluid out the bleeders. Any suggestion would be greatly appeciated. Wayne
  16. Here we go again. We now have a new clutch, new slave, plenty of pull on the handle, no air in the lines, clear return hole, scuffed the metal plates, and still the thing slips. The only thing that isn't new on the thing is the pressure plate. The only positive is that it doesn't seem to slip quite as bad. Now I'm wondering, would it help if I replaced a couple of the (cork) plates with steel ones? Or do I go with an aftermarket clutch spring? As I'm at a complete loss of ideas, how about some more of that advice?
  17. Hello People, I'm new to this site and have lots of questions. I just bought a 92 Venture form a guy at work. He pretty much wheels and deals with bikes. This one has 70K miles on it. It needed some TLC, so I got a deal(I Think). So far I have replaced the vacuum lines on the cruise, replaced the carb boots which mount the carbs to the head, replaired several electrical connections including the E4 error for the suspension controller. Now I need to replace fork seals and brakes. My main question is on the rear rotor, which bikes have rotors that are interchangeable with this bike? Are any compatable front to rear? I have been looking on ebay and have seen some. I am on a limited budget and would like to have enough to spread around to other areas that need work also. Thanks for any input:cool10:
  18. hi all, hope someone can help. i have a 89vr 1300. The stator went out on me i bought a new one. took housing off unplugged wires , replaced stator, replaced battery. went to start the bike and i got nothing. when turning the key on lights come on when hitting the start button lights go out. thats all it will do. Anybody got any idea's what could have happened? Yes i plugged the wires back in, yes i replaced the oil, yes new battery has a full charge.yes kill switch is in on postion, bike in neutral.
  19. Well, the battle I've been fighting with my electrical system since last fall continues. I replaced the Battery, main ground cables and rectifier. I still can't seem to get any life out of the battery. I charge it up with the battery tender, I starts fine, Charges fine while it's running, and starts right back up if I don't wait too long, but if I leave it for a couple of hours, I can barely get the engine to turn over once. I measured the resistance of the entire system between the battery cables with the battery disconnected and key off and read 47 kohms. Is this normal and if not, what might be causing the draw? I haven't yet replaced the cable between the starter and the solenoid yet, I intend to, but I don't think that is the problem. I'm getting real tired of watching everyone else's bike through the windshield of my suburban while mine sits in my garage because I don't trust it to start if I stop anywhere.
  20. Hi I have just replaced the original brigestones on my tour deluxe and have replaced them with Metzler ME880 on both front and rear. I am having all sorts of problems with the handling now. It feels like the front end wants to go from under me when powering around corners. The front end seems so light. I have 36psi in the front and 40 psi in the back. Any suggestions. Regards Tapi (Western Australia)
