  1. There wasn't much going on this weekend, so I decided to black out the cylinder covers on my scoot... I plan on scuffing/buffing the edges of the fins, but I'm waiting for the paint to cure first... Of course I had to attach before and after photos.... http://i788.photobucket.com/albums/yy164/human4m/0417001356.jpg http://i788.photobucket.com/albums/yy164/human4m/0417001355.jpg http://i788.photobucket.com/albums/yy164/human4m/0418001626.jpg http://i788.photobucket.com/albums/yy164/human4m/0418001626a.jpg
  2. Looking for some assistance. I am looking for paint source/supplier that is a match the '05 Liquid Silver of my bike. I have a rear spoiler that is black, needing to paint it to match the Silver Grey of the trunk before mounting. Any suggestions? Spray can likely is ideal, but not sure the quality finish it might produce. Thanks for any help or suggestions.
  3. Would someone know the paint code for a 2006 RSTD? The paint is Pearl White. Had the O'reilly's man use his paint scanner on the saddle bag and it came up with White Gold?? he said it was not the right color? He said I have the Two stage paint $$. He also used his little color folder as well trying to see if he had a color match No luck so far:(. he said he would keep this on file and see what he can come up with later?. Also asked The local Yamaha dealer for help as well, and they could care less.. one reason why I do not buy from them anymore...... So anybody have a Good Paint Code I can give him?? he said an automotive paint code would be better?? He said motorcycle paint codes do him no good?? I don't now why he said that?? Guess his computer doesn't carry Motorcycle Paint codes?? Reason I'm asking is my Mom bought me a new after market H.D. Fairing for my Birthday last month. And I have a Venture trunk I been saving, glad I dint sell it now. Anyway I want to add these to the RSTD and I hope I get a good color match?
  4. Most of us know what factory paint looks like and i think Yamaha has some good colors . Buuuuuuuuuuuuut you know their are a few of us that can,t leave well enough alone . so i would like to start a thread on pic's of our after market paint jobs and why we can't leave well enough alone , i'll start , sense i have painted mine 3 time in less than 3 years ! when i got mine it had a ruff life and looked pretty bad , my so called friends that i rode with where at the same feeling as me - don't care what you ride as long as you ride - until i showed up with my faded brown 1 gen , very faded brown , it was the same color of a well fed dog leaves behind . the day that i made up my mind to paint her is when i was following a friend and a another rider came up beside my friend and told him he need to change his diet because he is leaving ruff looking turds behind him , enough said , my bike got the 1st paint job ! this is the only pic's of it when it was brown . the pic and a lot of wax made it look a lot better than it was than the Met. silver with ice green next it blue and a few mods , that was after a nice lady backed over it , at present 3 stage Met white with Met. blue I showed y'all mine , now it's your turn !
  5. OK. now i will once again try to post pictures of my 86 venture from russ, after the paint..
  6. So this morning, I decided to take the scoot to work... (47° & overcast was good enough for me) 1/2 way through my 40 mile trek... She's runnin outta gas. No gas light.... Strange. Flip to reserve, and carry on to the gas station. Pop the gas cap and see something I can't believe I've never noticed... scaly rust... JB Weld...Ugh! I don't know how I missed it until now (i'm sure it has nothing to do with the fact that I am always too busy staring at my paint) but I can't deal with a corroding fuel neck/tank. SO- Looks like I'll be ordering some new Alsa paints when the weather warms up and dries out. Anyonw know where I can find a tank, side covers, and fenders for my 97 Royal Star? I would just repaint them, but getting the pinstriping and umpteen coats of clear off just won't be worth it. Besides, I think I want to paint it with the Lava paint from Alsa... I'm willing to part with my paint set (tank, fenders, side covers) if someone wants them.
  7. Since I dislike having things that I don't use......and since my Venture came with a trailer hitch....... It's an older trailer, and needs a little work. I may have to paint it red, but I think it's going to be an easy resto. Opinions on what it's worth?? I paid $175 for it.
  8. Hi All, any ideas on how to get rid of the discolouration on my valve covers (and some other engine pieces)? I have seen a suggestion that paint remover and steel wool be used, but that seems awfully aggressive on these soft aluminum parts. Any suggestions?
  9. Some have asked me on how I built the BEERCART . I searched through my photos and was able to come up with these . I may have more , but these should explain enough . First I started with the floor , made of 7/16" OSB plywood . I built a box and ribs of same material . While constructing the internal box and ribs , I used screws to fasten them together and also made in such a way that when the time came , I could take apart and remove after I fiberglassed the body . In this first 4 photos , I had already laid the floor , constructed the inner framework and ribs . I then laid layers of 1/2 foam board on which I cut into widths that would maintain a thickness that when I sanded/molded , it would still hold it's rigidity . I used Elmer's glue and 3" drywall screws to secure the layers . I used a belt sander with 50 grit and a larger wasp to shape the mold . http://www.meangene.us/beercart/MCT1.jpg http://www.meangene.us/beercart/MCT2.jpg http://www.meangene.us/beercart/MCT3.jpg In these next photos , I needed to be able to maneuver the mold to work around . So I placed a pipe through the mold to form an axis and made a stand to form a rotisserie likeness to spin the mold to work much easier . Also at the time of when the photos were taken , I had already proceeded to my next step in the mold shaping of finer lines at which I used drywall compound to smooth out the body lines and to define the shape of the BEERCART . There was a large amount of hand sanding at this stage ! http://www.meangene.us/beercart/MCT6.jpg http://www.meangene.us/beercart/MCT8.jpg http://www.meangene.us/beercart/MCT9.jpg http://www.meangene.us/beercart/MCT10.jpg The pictures show above is what I believe was the funnest of all the steps it took to build the BEERCART . Because at this time I was able to express on how I wanted the BEERCART to become . It was also a challenge not only to form the mold , but to balance each side to mirror itself . Although I know that I did not exactly match each side to be a perfect match from one side to the other , I know I got pretty darn close for a homemade project . Now I did not get photos of the next step , but I can explain it to you very simply . After I finished "all" the modeling , I used latex house paint to paint the mold on which I used at least 2 heavy coats of paint . For the reason of that fiberglass resin would dissolve the foam that I used to make the mold . This paint became a barrier between the chemical reaction which would occur such as pouring gasoline in a Stryo-foam cup . After the paint dried , I applied a generous coat or 2 of Turtle Wax . This became the release agent that would allow me to take the mold apart after fiberglassing . We do not want the fiberglass to bond with the mold , as we will be removing the mold eventually . Fiberglassing : There are numerous websites that will show you what you need and how to apply . I was fortunate to have some experience and also help from a friend whom builds boats . On the BEERCART , I used multiple layers of fiberglass matting and cloth . I applied the fiberglass in strips and layers to eventually form an 1/4" wall throughout the construction . In some places I either applied more for bracing and/or sheer strength . Here is a photo after we glassed the BEERCART and removed the mold . It has a greenish tint to it because of the Turtle Wax we used as a release agent . http://www.meangene.us/beercart/MCT11.jpg Removing the mold . ; After we glassed the BEERCART , I started unfastening the inner box , then the ribs , and then prying out the foam .. Then I used sandpaper to scuff up and remove the release agent and wipe away with an acetone rag . After we removed any of the waxes from the release agent , we started on filling and body work . Filling ad sanding , filling and sanding until we gained a smooth prime finish . http://www.meangene.us/beercart/MCT12.jpg Meanwhile and to take a break from the bodywork , I started on the trailer frame . I used thick wall 2"x2" aluminum square tubing . I did a layout on plywood , then cut the tubing to match the layout . I used 500 lb torsion axles on the BEERCART . After all the cutting , we weld the aluminum tubing . It took me 45 minutes to cut the frame pieces and 3 hours of welding . http://www.meangene.us/beercart/MCT13.jpg After the frame was all welded , we went back to the body . Just like in the auto repair body shop , we prepped the BEERCART , primed and then painted . We finally assembles the frame and body and then added accents , lights , mags/tires , undercoating , and other bells and whistles . http://www.meangene.us/beercart/MCT16.jpg http://www.meangene.us/beercart/MCT20.jpg To say to this date , the BEERCART is still not finished . I am constantly adding new bells and whistles . I added a linear actuator with remote to open the hatch this past summer . I plan on adding an extra fuel cell to help extend my range . Wife says I still need to add the satellite dish and Mailbox ! The BEERRCART is 45" wide , 6' long with 3' tongue . Weighs approx 190 lbs dry and pull great . I have pulled it approx 33 K so far without any issues other than having to reposition my load now and then . Total cost in materials have run me an estimated $900.00 and about 5/6 months of fun in labor . But keep in mind that I did get a few Good Buddy deals along the way . I may have missed a few step explaining the process in building the BEERCART , but I think you can fill in the voids . If not ask away , will be more than happy to explain . BEER30 .
  10. You may have seen this before, but I think it is worth another go round. Ian just click below and enjoy the show!!! I guarantee you will watch this spell-bound until the last drop of paint is put in place.. Make sure your sound is turned up
  11. What brand of clear paint have you used to seal the shine after polishing the engine pieces. I have the heads ready to seal but figured I'd ask here to see what kind of luck the rest of you have had after painting them to keep their shine. I have done the side cases a while ago but never painted them. I have kept them shiny being that their easy to access. But the heads are harder to access so its paint time if any of you have had good luck doing it and it lasts.
  12. I found a can of 44k at a local auto repair garage. How much should I put in a tank of gas? The garage owner said it was some bad stuff and to make sure I didn't get any on paint, clothing, or skin. He also said if I didn't use all of it not to store in a plastic container but to use glass.
  13. This is way cool .... click here
  14. Planning to paint my 84 this winter and am considering a silver and black combination. Anyone with this combination or other non factory 2 tones willing or able to post pictures? I have a friend who's son is apprenticing in auto body and is looking for projects plus I painted mine a few years ago and it was a quick and dirty job. I have seen some of his work and he is getting pretty good at painting. I will have to do some tab and crack repair also. Here's a before and after of my current paint job, the gold is a Nissan colour.
  15. Gunboat - I got a package in the mail today. I had no idea there was a membership but I will wear it proudly. Is it an iron on or need I sew it on ? Thank You - twice. are the caps brass ? if they are I can buff the yellow paint off, correct ?
  16. Just finished splashing some paint on my 84. Still going to add pin stripe to out line the area of the origional two tone. Color is Teal Blue Metallic from 2002 Chevy. What do you guys think? http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd318/elagyrrep/IMG_1373.jpg http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd318/elagyrrep/IMG_1374.jpg http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd318/elagyrrep/IMG_1375.jpg
  17. Hello all and as promised, I have returned with more pics of the 'finished' product. I'm pretty darn happy with the way she turned out. The paint looks really good and the final mounts are working out well too. And most importantly...I'm still well under budget: Fairing (ebay) $300+$45 shipping Aluminum Angle-Iron $35 (had to buy 8ft) Misc nuts and bolts $10 Paint $125 + two 12"Subs - decided to go with one color to keep things simple. As before...so what do ya all think (and please be gentle) Sorry about all the picture, thought more was better in this case...And, the "full size" links are generally 1.5meg images. 18. This winter i,m going to repaint my bike. Well, not me, but someone who knows what they,re doing. Anyway, i want it original color and that was easy enough to find. Looking at order form however i realized i have no clue how much paint it takes to paint a bike. Ihave a two tone 03 and with prices from $82 for a 1/2pint to 190 for a quart i figured i better get a rough idea how much of each i need. thanks guys[and gals] al
  19. :confused24: 1. Should I paint the bags to match the bike? 2. Should I paint the Ivory on the bike to match the Black Cherry? 3. Do neither and name my bike "The Coat of Many Colors"? 4. Anyone interested in the leather bags I took off?
  20. Can someone out there tell me what colors my bike is what Yamaha calls it? and is there a paint code for it? Thanks http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s37/VictoriaVett/100_1683-1.jpg
  21. There appears to be controversy about beaded seat covers. My wife would like to try one, and I will too. I note in some of the discussions that the beads will scratch the paint, so I want to make sure I get the right size. Has anyone bought a Bead Rider for an RSTD? What size? Dave
  22. Anyone happen to know the PPG paint code for an 08 "Black Cherry" RSV? The code on the sticker under the seat is 02c9g-010. Colorrite has the paint code for a "Venure" (no "T")....maybe just a misprint??? Thanks!
  23. Well, about a year ago I purchased my 2000 MM (which I love) for a great price. My son was the finance manager at the dealership that I bought the bike from so I got a good deal. Well, I am not really liking the color, while the bike is a pretty bike, I really like darker colored motorcycles. While I keep looking around I do not see any prices that are so high that I should concern myself with changes (painting the bike to match my choices). My opinion is that I paint it and ride it in enjoyment, or sell it and buy another. My choice of color would be a black with a small amout of blue metalflake in the paint. My question is simply this...if I paint my bike to the color I want do you think my value on the bike will change (if it changes at all). The biggest issue that bothers me is that my bike is number 3 ....of 1500. Please let me know what you think......just looking for input to help me make my mind up.... Thanks for your thoughts.... Artie
  24. Are you home yet?? Where are the pics of the RSTD custom project? :whistling: Can't stand all this waitin' C'mon where is the beautiful, new paint job? Show me, show me, show me PLEASE!
  25. Didn't wash the bike the whole time we were gone... Needless to say it had layers of bug splatter on it. We've washed and washed the thing, but I there is still some area's on the paint that just don't want to come clean. What would be the easiest product to use to get rid of it? Thanks Deb:think:
