  1. I've read responses about changing out rear brake pads. At 42 I'd tackle anything; at 62 I'm a little worried. But, one of the reasons I signed onto Venture Rider is because of the people and the willingness to help others. Brothers and sisters, I may be calling on you if I get hung up and can't fix it.
  2. Argh close call.. Just a heads up for those not too sure about their brakes on the Venture.. I was starting to hear strange sounds from my rear brakes when I applied them but when I checked the pads I could see quite a bit of wear left on the one side but the inside pad I couldn't see properly.. but hey, if the outside pad has life left to them then the inside pads must also, right? Egads no.. Just because the noise was making me nervous, I opted to change the pads out anyway, what the heck, start of the season, at least I'll know they'll be good for most of the rest of the summer.. and dayum!! Might as well say it was metal on metal.. Though the outside pad showed life left to it, the inner pad was wore right down to the metal pad holder.. wow.. Good thing I didn't decide to push it further.. It certainly didn't sound like a worn pad metal to metal sound but now I know what it sounds like on this bike.. The hardest part of the job is taking the bag off the bike.. So when in doubt, get in there and check.. I was quite surprised how badly worn they were.. wow. and Phew for going ahead with the pad change..
  3. Hey, I just god 3 pairs of brake pads for $38.25. Thats almost the same price for 1 pair at the dealsr. www.sixity.com Just put them on and they are just like the old ones.
  4. Just wondering where is the best place online to buy brake pads for my 88 VR 1300??? Kim
  5. Working on the brakes on my '87 Royale today. The rear pads were down so I replaced them. I also checked the fronts but they were O.K. I did notice on all the brakes that the calipers were partially extended and the pads were against the discs, making it a bit difficult to get them off the disc. Should they not be more or less fully retracted when the brakes are not being applied?
  6. Hey All: I went to have my annual inspection weekend before last and unlike last year I hung around till it was done. When they said its ready...I asked...Did you check everything...YES...They said...Everything good until next year?..YES...They said...Did you take the rear saddlebag off to check the rear pads...NO..They said....Why:confused24:..not....I said...WE use a mirror...OK...I said.... NOTE: Last year I left it to have the new WWW's put on along with the inspection.....and came back later in the week.... I came home last weekend...Pulled the Saddlebag....Pulled the Rear Pads....See what I found below with my pixs...Just finished put on EBC FA123HH sintered pads....I posted the pixs for two reasons; 1. to show how the pads can wear unevenly.....Really a design flaw I think...and 2. To show why it is important to just know HOW for the Safety Thing George In Virginia
  7. This for those of you that have removed the passenger arm rest rubber pads, to access the rear speakers or what have you. What have you used to put them back? The double sided tape I have as well as the local parts stores are too thick! I was considering black adhesive silicone. Any suggestions!!!
  8. Need info on changing brake pads on 06 RSTD.Any special tools need or special pads? Thanks
  9. My front brake pads seem to be glued onto the callipers to preventing them from rattling. Is this in fact glue or maybe hi temp silicone? I want to change the pads and need to know what to use. Any ideas? Thanks Harry
  10. Good evening fellow members. I am looking for a source for a rear brake master cylinder rebuild kit for my 88 VR. I haven't called the stealer yet. I flushed the fluid in the rear and that didn't seem to help. Even if I pump it, it doesn't have much stopping power. I replaced the pads with new EBC HH pads and still no improvement so I am guessing the next logical step is to rebuild the master and see if that doesn't solve the "barely braking" problem. When rebuilding the master is it also advised to take the reservoir off and flush it out as well or just do a good flushing of the fluid after the rebuild? I also have searched the net and can't find a source for the grommet that goes around the headset cable that goes through the plastic on the fairing. I looked on J&M Corp website but no luck. Does anyone know where I could get one of these grommets? Thanks in advance for all your help.
  11. Putting new brake pads front and back on my 87 VR, would like some info on which pads to use. From what I have read I should use the following configuration. Rear - standard Organic/Carbon Front - Metal Looking for some advice because there is also Kevlar and Ceramic. I purchased this ride last May and now in the process of putting on new tires front and back (going to use Dunlap 3's) and putting in new rear wheel bearings and clutch. Had to put new diaphrams, plugs, wires and Caps last year. Thanks Dan
  12. I need to change by brake pads. Now I would like to know what kind I should purchase. I have seem several types advertised. What is remommended? Organic, Kelvar etc. I know on my 33 plymouth I used the metallic dustless pads but I haven't seen anything advertised for the bikes but Organic and kelvar on ebay. The ones I have now seem to be ok as far as dust but I know the back pad only lasted 1 year or about 8k. I use and believe in the friction zone and perhaps that is why the rear wore out so fast but I don't care I like the fricion zone expecially in this Houston traffic. Any suggestions/links to which pads I should consider? BTY Just ordered the Stelbel horn and Carbon One bracket to replace my current horn. thanks
  13. OK, I'm gonna have to do some pad replacing this winter. The thieves at the local stealership want $86 for a set of pads. I found these on Ebay for under half the price. Has anyone had any experience with these pads or this seller? Thanks!
  14. I just replaced these rear pads after 18k miles. I believe I got my money's worth. Dennis
  15. I have ordered new brake pads to install this weekend on my 07 RSV (30k miles). I noticed that on the front brakes, the inside pads appear almost new while the outside pads are very close to the wear indicator. I know that this seems to be normal on the rear brakes but............. 1. Is this normal on the front brakes? and 2. Can I reuse the 2 good pads (1 from either side) on 1 caliper and just install new pads on the other side? I have ordered a full set of pads for front and rear so having parts is not an issue, but if I can save a set for next time that would be good too.
  16. The other day I pulled the front brake calipers to check the condition of the brake pads and to add a little brake grease at the metal contact points (squeaking at slow speeds while braking). I pushed the caliper pistons slightly backing to the caliper in order to get the caliper to reinstall over the pads. I now find that the front brake lever is engaging much further away from the handle bar grip than previously, and too far away from the grip to be comfortable for me. Can anyone offer suggestions to correct this problem? Thx.
  17. where is the best place ( Service / Price ) to order the EBC brake pads from??? Think I`m riding on a prayer ..... Thanks
  18. I replaced my rear pads and discovered 2 pistons were stuck. Removed the caliper and removed each piston. Had a little gunk to remove from each piston and now it works great. After i replaced the pads i have noticed that they seem to grab and slip a little. Very noticable especially when using the rear to slow down at high speed. Never had this happen with the old brakes. Dont know if the rotor is bent or the brake pads need to set. Any ideas?
  19. Like most thing mechanical, my change out of the rear brake pads has gone to crap. 3 of the 4 pistons pushed right in, but I have one that I can not get to move. I think I messed up the old pads trying to compress the piston and the new one will not go in. Tips / Advice? I started to torch it and file an insurance claim.
  20. Everyone knows that the brakes on a Venture and Road Star sound like hell after a while.. noisy, metal on metal noise and no matter what you do, the dealer tells you it's normal and you learn to live with it.. Mine was making that noise and it really bothered me to the point that I would not use the front brakes when pulling into a crowder parking lot.. I took someone's advice and attempted to use some squeal remover compound behind the brake shim but ran into a problem where one of the 4 retainers looked damaged.. (there are 2 per caliper on which the brake pad shoulders slide back and forth across, sorry can't remember the proper nomenclature).. However, the part looked like it was making contact with the disk.. When I put everything back together again, the sound was even worse but you could actually see how it was cutting into the disk now. So I ordered new ones.. at $20 each.. sheeesh!! hopefully gold plated but no.. Anyway, long story short, new pads, new shims, and new clips and the front brakes are quieter than a squished bug on your windshield. Most likely a combo of new shims and pads.. However, if your brakes are making more than the normal amount of noise, give these parts a look-see.. you never know.. Cheers
  21. I have a 89 VR, want to replace brake pads front and rear. Where should I get the pads and do I need to do anything to the rotors before the install
  22. Just turn 20,000 miles on my 2005 RSV and decided to check the brake pads. Front pads looked new but rear pads were gone. My question is, are the front and rear brake linked and no front brake being applied, or am I just using to much rear brake???
  23. I have an 01 RSV, are the rotors made of stainless steel. It's time for new pads and the ones I'm looking at say for stainless steel rotors only.
  24. I am rebuilding the forks on my '87 VR and I am going to replace the springs with with Progressives. I found them on Dennis Kirks's for $77.99. Should I order seals also? My front brake pads are soaked with fork oil and I don't know what kind to replace them with. My questions are: What weight oil? How much oil? What kind of brake pads? Thanks, Kevin
  25. While changing out the tires on the bike, noticed the rear pads are shot. They were EBC's? Only had 5200 miles on them. Last set I used were Streetexcel and got 10k outta them? Is this typical? I do belives in throttle control with rear braking, but half the mileage?
