  1. Since getting the RSV at thanksgiving the wife and I have been trying really hard to catch one good day to put a few miles on it. Well, today the temp was in the low 60's but kinda hazy and everything is wet. We hit a couple of places on the road that looked really smooth, and slick. When I hit these areas the bike felt like I was riding on ice. I knew I needed to replace the front tire but now I'm thinking I need to put new rubber on the back to. I'm talking, it felt REALLY SQUIRRLY!!!! From most of what I've read on here, the Avon Venoms are the recommended tire. How about wear? What kind of mileage can I expect to get out of the rear? Any other recommendations would be appreciated.
  2. Thanks Goodness Well I boo-booed again and I am very sorry. Today we went for ride, actually heading down to Carl's with Rhonda, my mother in law, sister on law and 4 yr old niece. The fog was horrible, and we never made it. The fog was so bad at times it was tough to see the end of the hood. As I was driving south I was looking for the stop sign as I was familiar with the road, and by the time I saw the sign it was too late, car would not stop, and I entered the intersection. We collided with the another car. Our right front corner hit the left front of his car, and he ended up in a ditch which dropped about 5 feet, and I was spun around. Rhonda, my mother in law and myself were all put in ambulances and sent to the hospital for xrays. Rhonda hit her head on the side window and has a good goose egg on her head also pretty sore in the chest. Her sister also banged her head, not that bad but is also sore. Rhonda's mom has a sprained wrist, and some muscle aches as she is 70 yrs old, but you would never know it. I have a cracked rib and some sore muscles. MY niece got a nice teddy bear from the fireman and she is fine. Even the 4 people in the other car are okay. Thanks to Brick (Darryl and Rhonda) for coming to get us at the hospital and getting to the accident scene quickly to remove some of our valuables. And I am very glad no one was seriously hurt. Pics of my car attached and this is the one I got only 3 months ago and have managed over 12,000 km on it, dam I liked that car. Also one pic of the car we hit. BRad PS: And Swifty when offering my wife a place to stay safe, do you think she deserves more than the cot. Oh yah another bloody ticket for running a stop sign.
  3. We left Vancouver Friday around 1PM, trailer in tow and drove thru the night arriving in Calgary around 9AM... we stopped several times to snooze and shared the driving. Got our new baby loaded up and then we hit the road for home around 2PM Saturday. Stopped over for the night in Cranbrook...hit the road around 4AM this morning ...got home roughly 5PM. I off-loaded the bike appx 100 km short of home and rode the rest of the way (rain mostly) but I didn't care... I LOVE THIS new scoot!!!
  4. Has anyone ever developed a trip where you could hit every of the 48 states? I think it would be a neat exercise. I've been working on one, but if someone has already come up with a route...well, let me just say that I don't want to reinvent the wheel.
  5. .........your sitting on the throne in the bathroom thinking about the ride you had today, you lean into the corner your thinking about and hit your head on the sink. .........you come to a stop and open the door and put your foot down. .........you have turned on the wipers, the turn signals and hit the horn trying to find the clutch and hand brake. ...........you start ducking all those big bugs hitting the windshield OR your hanging your head out the window trying to catch lunch! ..........you strap you tank bag on the hood of the car. .........you strap your saddle bags to the trunk of the car. . .........you just tried to split lanes between two very large trucks (ie. Cali ). .........you are driving with all your riding gear on. I'm sure you folks could come up with a few. KURT
  6. Running out of ideas. The cruise in this '86 used to work, not great, but it worked. Now it will turn on, all the lights come on-then go off with power light still on. Hit the set button and nothing happens. It's like the wire was cut. I took the switch apart and it looked good; cleaned it, and put it back together. I have done the same to the clutch switch and the brake switch. I took the instrument panel apart(to get the bug out of the speedo:rotf:) and took apart all the plugs and cleaned them and put dielctric in them. Then I did it to almost every plug on the scoot. The scoot was kept mostly indoors during it's former life and everything has been free of corrosion. I have tried to chase wires but the diagram I have(the free downloadable one here) is mostly unreadable so I am not having any luck with the wirs. I know little about electronics and get easily bogged down. I don't know how the system works but I think when I hit the set switch, a signal goes to a black box or 2(haven't a clue) which works the diaphram conected to the throttle box. I just don't know what next. Any help would be appreciated.
  7. My mom just called me to let me know that the Muffinman and myself hit the front page here in Jacksonville Daily News . http://www.jdnews.com/news/memorial_59716___article.html/vietnam_onslow.html What a relief it was to see it wasn't photos to go up in the Post Office ! As I road with Rolling Thunder , Muffinman , Mini , Poledar , Pole Dancer , SaltyDawg , Chrome Rose , and other VR riders attended as well . BEER30
  8. Almost. This is what I came out to at lunch today. I was parked at an angle to the curb about 6 to 8 feet behind a Black Ford F-150 pickup when I went in this morning. When I came out to ride to lunch, the truck was gone and my bike was laying in the street. There was a guy on a Burgman scooter stopped as he thought there had been a crash. I saw the guy that lives in the house on the porch and motioned for him to come down to the street. I asked him if he knew anything about what happened. He said his girlfriend had left in the truck, but she did not hit my bike. I said is was obvious someone hit it and I suspected it was the person driving the truck. He is a bit redneck with about a dozen piercings and he started this I am gonna whoop your a$$ stuff. I said thats' all folks, I am calling the police. Well, it just so happens the guy on the scooter had some real close Police buddies and he called both of them. In a few minutes, both of them were there. Our Company Security people came by, but they informed that with it being on city streets, they were not involved. So, the scooter guy and I start talking to the LEO and he says it looks like a hit and run. The LEO talks to the guy at the house and that guy gives him the girl friend's phone number and she tells him that she did not hit my bike. So the LEO says with what he is told, there is not much more he can do until he can investigate more. The LEO gave me the card to get the police report and if I find out anything else, to let him know. Well, as the afternoon wore on, one of the engineers I work with said we might have it on company video. I give Security a call and ask and the guy says,"Ya mean the one that happened at 11:29 that shows a black pickup truck knocking a bike over and driving off"? "I said that must be the one". He then said he would burn a copy and give it to Human Resources as he was not allowed to give it straight to me. I did stop by the security office and they showed it to me. I then stopped by the police station and asked about getting in touch with the LEO that did the report as I had more information. The LEO gave me a call and I advised him it was on video and I would have a copy tomorrow. The LEO called me a little while ago and advised he was at redneck's house trying to get some information. The right fairing took a hard hit and both bags, one from the bumper and one from the curb. It also knocked the light bar to one side and the headlight cover is almost a half inch off center. It bent the engine guard into the water pump elbow, but did not hurt it. So, we will see what kind of insurance they have and go from there. Even though this is all fixable stuff for me, including the ghostflame paint job, I know this is going to be a big hassle. Please wish me luck. The LEO that did the report rides a Goldwing. RandyA
  9. Sherry Paterson called at 2;30 today. Tom E was hit and killed by a truck. Will post more later.
  10. Another fantastic day in the NC mtns, there I was minding my own business, filling my tank at the local conv.store. When all of a sudden everyone is yelling "watch out" so I turn to see this big ole green dodge ram pick-up heading my way, with no one in it:scared: So I try to stop it, I am all of 5'5" 170lbs it aint happenin meanwhile a guy comes running up opens the driver door, to try to hit the brakes, I am calling him every name in the book, thinking its his truck, he yells hey man I am just trying to help, aint my truck, about then it crashes into my bike and flips it on its side, bike is pinned to gas pump on left and big-foot on rite:scared: gas pouring out the overflows. Truck wont start, so we gotta push it outta the way, just to get to the bike, now I am more than a little pxxxxxed. Well I found out I can lift the bike up by myself, and I dont have to back into it and use my legs LOL. Well she aint a virgin anymore?? Station owner wanted an incident report as he hit the pumps too so the Police were there and he does have ins. Aint banged up too bad, but it sure put a damper on my day. Craig
  11. Before I got the 2006 Midnight this summer, I rode my modded 2005 1100 Vstar a lot.. 80,000 kma in 2 years.. And in those two years I've had a lot of bird strikes while riding. Luckily, the three that hit my person didn't cause me to come off the bike but it hurt like hell. The others that hit the bike left a lot of mess. Most noteably was the pigeon that hit me in the shoulder and exploded in a large puff of feathers that my ride mates ran through.. (The wood pecker story is a whole page in itself.. ; ) And once I got my Venture, I figured my bad luck would follow since it's a bigger bike, a larger target for these birds to hit.. But after 4500 miles, no worries until recently.. sigh. I'm riding along the back road in the lead with my ride buddies in trail when all of a sudden there's a loud sharp WHACK to the back or top of my helmet, scaring the living heck out of me.. I pulled over right away as I had NO idea what had happened.. yep, sure enough, a bird hit the left antenna and it bent all the way back and then snapped forward to strike my helmet with a nice whack.. My buddies behind me saw this happen, the puff of feathers from a small bird and then my jumping out of the seat at being startled by the hit of the antenna.. Good thing they were there to tell me about as I don't think I would have figured it out on my own.. I didn't think the antenna would reach that far.. Go figure.. I don't worry about deer in the road a lot.. its the dang birds I worry about..
  12. Today on my way to Morgantown I passed a bad motorcycle accident on I79 that backed up traffic for miles. The rider was flown to the hospital with no word on his current condition. He was trying to pass a FedX truck and somehow collided with it. While I was in Morgantown working in the ER I heard another call over the radio about another motorcycle accident. The victim had no feeling in his legs. Thats two the same day. Last weekend a rider was killed when he lost control and hit an embankment. He suffered severe head trauma. This state requires all riders to wear a helmet but reports say he was not wearing one. His wife was injured but survives. RIDE SAFE GUYS. TO MUCH OF THIS GOING ON.
  13. Yesterday I hit the back roads heading north in Michigan, 2 up and traveled every type of road you'd expect to find here...including wash board dirt/gravel/sand roads...just under 600 miles in about 15 hours. I am happy to report that by using a CT, specifically, a BF Goodrich T/A Radial...I had a great day of riding... We hit some rain, and I am talking intense rain, where I could only see the white line a few feet ahead of me, and the tire performed flawlessly... The sun was beating down on the road bed, at about 91-95 degrees, except for the periods of rain and when riding along the shore line of Lake Huron, and Lake Michigan, where the temps dropped nearly 20 degrees. The tire didn't seem to mind the continuously changing environments in the least.... I am more convinced than ever, considering my ride style, and penchant for long distance riding...that I'll never go back to a MT and it's limited cornering abilities and low mileage lifetime.... I had been concerned about how the tire would handle at speeds above 70-80mph, which is where I usually cruise. I came up on a group of three vehicles, that were doing maybe 45mph, and as soon as I had a shot, I passed them, I hit a smidgen over 100 as I cleared the group and eased back into my lane... I was totally freakin out, but to my utter relief and great satisfaction, the tire did it's job and never even blinked.... The center line on most of the secondary roads in northern Michigan have warning slots cut across it , to alert drivers that they are wandering into oncoming traffic, I was a little worried at first the tire would react violently when it crossed them at 100 mph, but it didn't complain...not once. I had similar results on the rain grooves too...the tire tracked as well if not much better than any MT I have used.... I would have to do some cipherin' to be sure, but I am guessing I have around 3000 miles on it now...maybe a little over, the tire shows no wear and is still pegged at 34.5psi. I feel compelled to include this disclaimer: "Warning : The use of a CT on your motorcycle may cause you to buy more chrome for your motorcycle, with the money saved on tires.":cool10:
  14. Alright, so despite all my other issues with the bike, the newest one is that it won't start. I hit the starter button and I get a click. nothing more. I suspect the starter Solinoid, and I figured to test it I'd run a battery cable off the battery and hit it straight to the starter. Enter my new problem: Where the heck is the starter???? Can I get someone to take a couple pictures and show me where I need to run this cable to? I've poured over pictures in the manual and I can't make heads or tails of the black'n'white's. Also, I don't suppose this is like my old truck was where you can take a hammer, tap the solinoid a couple times and make it work, is it? Thanks in advance!
  15. Riddle me this batman: is it the battery or an electrical short somewhere? Well kids, life's been good...haven't ridden the bike in a couple days until yesterday, noon. hopped on Trigger, turned on the ignition, head lights turned on, neutral lit up green, hit the start button, the engine rolled over for a few seconds, but no start. So I hit the start button again, but this time, the engine barely turned and the lights went out. Oh #$%^! Must have blow a fuse. well needless to say the fuses are all good, but the ignition is dead. So I walked away from her for an hour or so, came back and now the lights once again work so i hit the start button only to hear...tick tick tick tick followed by the familiar power death. It sounded like what i believe to be the solenoid ticking? Checking the battery, my meter stated that it had 12.8 volts with 3.8 amps...for what it's worth. Next i pulled the battery and let it charge for a hour and gave it another try...same results. Followed by the "well let's try jump starting it" which worked! ... but, i noticed that the green neutral light (as well as the headlight) was flickering. I didn't like that so i shut her down. and finally, I got little Bro to cough up the battery out of his bike and Mikey Moused it into mine...hit the button and VROOM VROOM! it's alive, it's alive it tell you! Trigger was purring along like nothing ever happened. Lights were stable and bright and the engine was idling nicely. So off to Wal-mart i go and can you believe it. Of the 6 or so batteries on the shelf, one was exactly what i needed...though it set me back $78 bucks, i was still rather happy. Unfortunately though, the new battery required an initial charge, so I'll have to do my [hopefully] final test in the morning [soon]. Now with that said, here are my observations: 1. if it was the battery, which i truly hope to be the case, it never showed any signs or symptoms of the impending doom. Lighting didn't change with engine speed, the starter didn't appear to drag or lug while starting, etc. Just BOOM, dead in the water. Another note, which i find rather hard to believe, is that the battery is a Yuasa brand. Which leads me to believe that it may be the original battery. That would be an 11 year old battery with 19K of miles on it...is that possible? [i'm the second owner] Anyway, i was just curious if anyone else has had this issue before. KARMA: the glass being half full here...i was suppose to leave for a big ride today. And yes i'm disappointed not to go, but i would have been REALLY disappointed, had Trigger died on me out there...
  16. Rode with a few other couples Sat to J & P Cycle's open house in Anamosa. About 50 miles into the ride we were going around a bend in the road and all we both saw was brown hair and then bang, bang, bang....The deer had to have made one leap from the other side of the ditch right into the left side of our fairing. All I can say is my husband is one heck of a good driver. We skidded into the other lane, onto the gravel shoulder the whole bike is swerving and he held onto it. I can't believe we didn't hit the ditch or lay the bike down. Cut in the front tire from the fender bending down, headlights sitting crooked and a few more dings. We're hoping the forks are ok.I don't think he was going over 45 mph when it happened. I can't belive how lucky we were. Kept on going down to the open house, but between the crowd down there, high winds and rain the whole way home...It was one of those days when we should have just hung it up for the day. No one hurt except his ankle which he drug on the road. A few Harley Riders from our hometown heard about it and everyone of them told Gary."It's lucky you had the Venture...cuz if it would have been an HD it would have never held up to that kind of force hitting it" Hope that's the first and last time we ever hit a deer!
  17. Well, I called our Human Resource Department to ask about getting a copy of the video tape showing the truck hitting my bike and was told that I may not get a copy of it. I was told that since the incident happened in the city street and not on company property that they had no obligation to share the video tape with me and did not want to get involved. I would have to wait until the Director of Human Resources got back and ask him. During this conversation I told her that I had seen the tape and it was very obvious that the truck hit my bike. She demanded to know which person in Security allowed me to view the tape as she was going to take issue with them. It caught me so off guard that I did not know what to say. After a while I called the HR MGR back and got her voice mail and advised her that just so there would not be any surprises, I had received a call from the LEO at home yesterday evening and in my conversation, I advised him there was a video tape made and I had viewed it. So, she needed to know that it was now part of the police report on a hit and run investigation. I gave her my cell # if she had any more questions and as of this moment I have not heard from her. So the crap is already starting!! RandyA
  18. just ordered my edsets. can't wait to get them. don't know if i got a discount unless it is deducted from the price they show you up front. don't really matter they sound like they are top of the line stuff and i needed them bad. can't here the bike speakers to well being hard of hearing. sirius radio was activated yesterday so i'm ready to hit the road. now i need to find a meet and eat near st. louis to go to to try all this crap out. bill
  19. Used CB all day today during group CMA ride. Leaving a parking lot, I tooted my weak stock horn to get someone yakking to get with the program. But man, my horn was actually LOUD! WOW! Got to the end of my ride and pulled up beside my wife's bike and told her "CHECK THIS OUT!". It was so loud it about knocked me off the bike. She said "sounds as cheesy as it always does". I took my helmet off and hit it again. Same weak toot. unplugged the helmet, switched to the speakers, hit the horn and BAM, horn sounds out of speakers (remember, headset and therefore mic are not plugged in). Turn off CB and leave just radio on and no problem. HELP!!! If I turn up the CB loud and forget and blow the horn, I am gonna be hurting!
  20. O.K. people...we are getting down to the short strokes, as they say. We are having some difficulty in getting the actual count on the number of shirts ordered so far because some people are only leaving their first name or their initials when they are emailing their t-shirt order and it's darn near impossible to figure out who's order it is. WE need the full name, and email address or telephone number, how you are paying, the number of t-shirts being ordered, the colour (black or grey) short sleeved or long sleeved and the size. Email your shirt order to: Venture_rally_stuff@yahoo.com ANYWAY....it looks like we're around 75 t-shirts ordered right now. WE need at least 100 shirt orders to make this fly! ANYONE wanting a T-shirt needs to get their order in NOW!! I need to call in the order Friday morning so we need to hit 100 by this Friday morning at 7:00a.m. at the latest. Anyone that has not yet registered needs to do that now as well, because the T-shirt that is included in that registration is part of that order. Send in your registration to: venturerally@hotmail.com PLEASE...PLEASE...PLEASE....let's hit the 100 shirt mark and make this happen!!
  21. Yama mama wants a chat party so we're having a chat party. come one come all, and lets have a fun night. Who knows maybe we can even break the record for how many get in chat. We need to hit 18 but if we can go higher that would be great. As barmaid Yama mama, she'll keep your whistle wet. Margaret
  22. I am on my second Venture. I had a 1984 which I loved but a divorce seen that go out the window. Now I have a 2007 Midnight Venture that I am picking up tomorrow. How many miles are you folks getting on the older bikes. Do they hit the 200 or 300 thousand mile marks with little problem? Just curious:detective:
  23. Just got a note from Jack's wife - Bev - updating their situation. Would ask everyone to keep both in their thoughts. "Just thought I should tell you that we are ok in case you hear otherwise thru the grapevine. We were on our way to meet up with Gregg and Sandy yesterday morning to head to Laughlin, when a lady pulled out in front of us. Jack has always been very cautious so he had stomped on the brakes & slowed way down before we hit her. Our front tire hit her front tire & turned the bike sideways. Jacks' right shoulder hit her drivers window and shattered the window, and separated his shoulder. Otherwise he is fine. I ended up on my back next to the rear tire of the car. Don't remember getting there, but don't think I blacked out at all. There were some really nice witnesses there who helped us a lot until the ambulance arrived. I was held still so I wouldn't move my neck, really couldn't see Jack, but knew he was talking and trying to find out how I was. And I also heard him say he thought he had busted his shoulder, he could hear it grinding. Took us to the hospital & fortunately Gregg and Sandy came looking for us & found us before the ambulance took us away. They got all of our things off of the bike & then followed us to the hospital, stayed with us until we were released & brought us home. They are such great friends! Anyway, I just seemed to be bruised up, except today I have noticed that my left knee is not happy, swollen & hurts to bend. Gonna go have that looked at soon. So, Jack got a call from Ryan (Visalia guy) last night & I guess the rumor in Laughlin was that we crashed in the middle of the desert (only 40 miles from home) and that we were airlifted to the hospital (I guess if you call a gurney airlifting....). Sounds sort of like the little deer we almost hit that became a moose before the night was over when we rode with a Harley group! So, Jack has an appointment on the first with a real good ortho dr. We are also looking forward to the new Venture this lady will be buying us! " Get well, soon, guys - and what color is the new Venture going to be?
  24. I woke up today with a call from my friend Sean. He wanted to take the physical test for his motorcycle endorsement and asked if I'd go along. I said sure, but there was another reason that I wanted to ride. This was the first time that Ruth joined me for a ride. I was kinda nervous but she proved to be a great co-rider. We rode to the testing area in Elwood Indiana and ended up running into a friend of ours. He was there to take the test as well. John has been riding bikes since the early 70's but has never held an endorsement. I guess he has to get one now that he owns a bike that has to be insured. You guys that did the Warsaw ride will remember Sean and John. We all stood around and chatted and saw an amazing thing. A dude on a Suzuki Boulevard did the drill were you accelerate then hit the brakes in a specified spot. He hit the brakes alright and locked them up falling to his right. His head hit the pavement and the bike slid out from under him. Everything got quiet and I ran over to see if he was ok. He was not hurt but man, talk about embarrassing. Wiping out with 20 bikers watching you doing a straight line stop. After the show, we rode to Max Pitts Yamaha and checked out the bikes. Sean is thinking about a Venture but is concerned that it's too much bike for him. I'm really hoping that he goes for it and joins us here in Ventureriders! Bob
  25. Its super June bug. Well it flys like one anyway. Even the dogs were avoiding it. How would you like to be riding down the road in TX doing about 70 with no windshield and have one of these hit you right in the forehead.
