  1. Hay all, I have been putting together an 03 RSV for about a year now. I have been getting most of my parts through ebay but have yet to find the chrome plastic strip for the windshield cover. At $100 bucks new for plastic (ouch) I would rather by used. I can repair scrapes and repaint.but even the used parts dealers don't have one. Have you got a real good used parts dealer that you would direct me too? thanks. I'll send lots of pics of the bike when I'm finished. For a sneek preview of my fuel tank paint job go to http://www.mackair.com. Look down a few pics til you come to one that has indians&horses. This guy does great work!
  2. Just wanted everyone to know that my dealer caled me, spoke to my wife, on Saturday and said that I needed to bring my bike in because there was a recall that was just announced on the 07's about the head bolts not being torqued properly and that a new head gasket would be installed. I just love owning the most expensive bike I've ever owned and the first Yamamha by the way AND now they have to take the heads off AND find a way to quiet this obnoxious sounding bike. The sound is bad enough where I really don't even like riding the thing. I'm going to wait until the Spring to have it fixed though because I don't want a new head gasket put on and then the bike sitting in a freezing garage. Anyways, I know these things can be fixed but I'm kind of sour on the Yamaha experience already. In four years, I'll sell this thing with a year left on the warranty and take my money over back to Suzuki or Honda. So anyways, guys with the "new" 07's, give your dealer a call. Take it easy gents.
  3. Where Is The Best Deal On Avon Tires? Or Should I Just Get Them Through My Yamaha Dealer ?

    Back Again

Apologize for not posting this sooner, but I'm finally starting to feel like my old self again after the accident. I do want to thank everyone for their prayers and good wishes after the accident:) sure is nice to know caring people still exist everywhere. I do have a partial settlement from the other drivers insurance company, their property damage adjuster is giving me almost 100% of what I had paid for my 07 RSTD, the service mgr at the local yamaha dealer convinced him to use NADA blue book, so I owe him a great big thanks too. On the other hand their medical/injury adjuster is being a complete jerk, but should be able to get this issue settled within the next couple of months. I'm going to test ride the new venture when the local dealer gets theirs in and have some questions, I had been riding a RSTD for several years, how much difference is there in the "top heaviness" between the venture and the rstd, I know that's subjective, but just trying to get an idea from those that have ridden both. If I go back to the rstd, how difficult is it to add either a yamaha trunk or HD trunk to the bike, I do plan on removing the passenger pillion again. Sorry for the long post, can't wait to get back on a bike again. Thanks JT
  5. After the first dealer said, "Hmmm, that wet spot behind your left front cylinder head, we're not sure where it's coming from, let's watch if for a while" and me not caring for that answer, called a second dealer who, at least on the phone, was very, very helpful. He took my VIN and said he'd call back in a few minutes, which he did. He said the 07's may have not had the head bolts torqued correctly. He said Yamaha will replace the gasket and they'll tighten the bolts to spec. Mid-Ohio in Mt. Vernon, OH. Nice, one dealer, not sure what's going on. The other dealer, clearly up to date on his Yamaha's. Just wanted to let other 07' owners be aware, there is a situation with certain 07's out there. Hope this helps. Mike
  6. I know we all have had bad dealer experiences. I just wanted to give props to my dealer for working with me to get a problem solved. My most local Yamaha dealer (Quincy, MA) isn't particularly well versed in the Venture and sometimes doesn't seem to like working on it, however, they do step up to the plate for me when it's necessary. I recently had a very spongy rear end (hey no comments!) and found oil leaking from the rear suspension. Having hung out here for quite a while I knew exactly what had happened and that it SHOULD be covered by warranty. I called the dealer, explained the situation and that it would be warranty work. Also asked if they had the part. They didn't and they said they'd have to look at it before they could even order it. The tone implied that they weren't thrilled about the prospect of doing work either. So I'm thinking to myself "OK here we go, it's going to be a pain in the ass and I'll have to fight my way through it." I brought the bike in and talked with the service manager who was skeptical that is was covered. I explained that I belong to a club of thousands of Venture riders and that this is a fairly common problem. Also told him that a few folks had needed to fight about it being covered but ultimately Yamaha had covered it. Got a call back from him and he explained that a history check showed the rear suspension had already been replaced once by the previous owner. Again I'm thinking "here we go". I told him "that''s nice, but it still failed and it's still covered" and also shared tales from other owners who had replaced more than three under warranty. We hung up. I called the next day to check in and I was told the part wasn't in stock and it'd be a while before they could get it. Again, I'm thinking "here we go". I checked in that Friday (only 3 days after I had dropped the bike off) to get an end of week update. They told me the part was in, They were trying to get it fixed that night but it may be Saturday before it was ready. Covered by warranty. What a nice surprise - no fighting and riding for the weekend! So far when there's been any question on things like this, I've been able to calmly state facts - many of which are learned here (Thanks Don & everyone who contributes) - which show my point. This dealer has been very good about taking that into consideration and doing what's right when I take this approach. Sometimes I think that dealers are so unfamiliar with lower profile bikes like the Ventures that they aren't aware of what's covered. Similar parts are not covered on other bikes or never fail within warranty periods so they don't see the situations often. Not being one to embrace conspiracy theories easily, I prefer to believe that it's more often unfamiliarity or apathy rather than spite that cause many dealers to question warranty coverages. Anyway, thought I'd share some positive dealer news since it's easy to overlook that when we hit a bad experience.
  7. Hi everyone: Instead of writing to each one of you, I figure all of you will find this. I have been to Sumter, South Carolina, to a Yamaha Dealer called Extreme Motor Sports. I wish to say, these are some good everyday folks. I was greeted with a handshake and the service manger listened carefully to me, introduced me to several people, they head mechanic took Cricket for a spin. While they were out with my Bike I went into the front of the shop and everyone was courteous, just plain nice. Business is clean, shop is clean , organized and very professional. So if you have a situation with a Yamaha.......you sure could do worse than visit this dealer, this is a good one. A keeper. So yes Cricket was diagnosed with the perpetual clutch basket situation. I was told again that the I basket will not ever completely remove the chirp, but those they have done, it has been a help and so far everyone has been happy with the conversion. So my genuine I basket will be ordered today........I will be called when it is in and we can set up a time to conduct the transfer. So until this time.......I will really have no comment until the final result is realized. I wish to also say......the dealer has bent over backward to help me, he told me as I have to ride the bike over.....it can most likely be handled in one day........so I can arrive.......my wife or someone can pick me up, we can run around Sumter and go shopping, eat out.....whatever......and go home the same day. That is service folks, with a smile. What a relief.........I was about to totally give up on dealers. Will keep you posted.....this may take awhile......but that is cool, Cricket runs strong and true, she is past the break in....hit the interstate this morning and wound her up coming off the entrance ramp........I am quite sure no 1st Gen can ever catch her. :stirthepot: Kit
  8. Hi All: I wish to tell you the whole story and then I am going to shut up, this is my last post on the clutch whine on the Venture. I have done all that is humanly possible, and I really do think I have the answer. I know what is causing this and it is not the clutch. However to solve it would be very expensive, and without information on gear tolerance, it may very well not be a solution we as laymen can do, with normal tools and knowledge. First for my dealer(what a joke they are!!) They are the typical dealer, nice boy salt will melt in their mouth when selling, want service, well, er........we will get back with you. Part of this is my own fault, I knew I wanted a Venture, I read all about it for six months. Thing is it was in motorcycle books, and on internet trial postings. I knew about the windshield, but there was not a word about this clutch whine business on any of them, or most likely I would not have purchased one. I like I say am partly to blame, as I purchased the bike, sight unseen, brand new from a dealer in South Carolina. We went up and my wife dropped me off and I took it home. I almost turned it around the first day half way home, then my common sense took over.......twas too late.........no faith in any dealer, always justified.....so on home we went, screaming the whole way!! Two days after bringing it home I called the dealer, the original person whom I dealt with was not there, left a message for him to call me, he never did. Next day I wrote them an email, explaining this situation and asking for advice and help, they never replied. Fellows there will not be a third time, I really do not like dealers at all and this just put the final nail in the coffin. Hey just yesterday we got the propaganda letter from the dealer, you know the one that says , Hey Kit Thanks for your purchase, we are sure you will enjoy many years with your new motorcycle!! They had my name wrong, and the letter was not signed. They will never turn a bolt on my bike, ever , this has been my dealership experience with most local dealers. I am told there is a good one in Sumter.......personally I am not going to go find out!! Before I finish I wish to say somewhere along the line , I have fell in love with this awesome machine. It is a great one, has a lot of good points, in fact many more than the bad, so I will keep it, and if anyone wants to listen to me, I will help them fix it........if not , I will leave them on their own and hope for better luck in five , years. Yes I will buy another one........I do like the bike. I have changed oil in this thing so much I may wear out the drain plug!! I am now running 20w50 with 10percent Lucas oil additive. This does really , really help, at high end of gearing, and at high speed. There is no noise at interstate speeds. We have also changed the clutch assembly and the clutch basket. We looked at all this stuff real close, one of us is plumber, the other is a mechanic, and both are full of sh......! But we could not see what we were going to accomplish. So we did run the engine without the assembly installed and yep.......the harmonics of the gear box travels through the gears to the main drive shaft and seems to resonate to the aluminum basket housing, hit the cover and magnify. Somehow I do not know exactly how the new assembly does move the sound to a lower rpm level. Could be the weight of the assembly, that is something we did not think to check on. The whine sound folks is not the clutch, it is a harmonic resonance from the gears, traveling out to the clutch cover and being magnified. If you want to study this on your own, look up textile machinery, hearing loss and some other things. Cut gears, high performance cars, gear mesh etc. I am also aware that to a small extent, the sound is held in by this high windshield and fairing which slightly compounds the situation also. So running non-warranty oil and a different clutch assembly, in 4th gear at 60 mph the sound is gone now.......70 mph in fifth gear, want to putter along at 55 in fifth.........will not take long to get annoying. So I have just ordered a set of Road House Pipes. I will mask the whine!! No I will not use earplugs, I want to hear the wheels sliding as the car behind me tries to run over me, so I can drop the clutch and get hit by the car coming across the intersection-maybe it will be clear!!. The only way I can see to fix the whine is to build a new transmission, close the gear tolerance and polish them up, blueprint it if you will. Nope not going to go to all that trouble. I kinda like loud pipes anyway. Now I will shut up.........this is my final solution. Kit
  9. What is a good choice for a good quality oil filter for a 1st Gen venture that is NOT from a dealer. I'm an hour away from dealer. Wally's #? Purolator #? Other... I just changed oil, but used my last filter & need to get a few. I use synthetic 20-50.
  10. Which seat do most RSV owner find to be the most comfortable. The Midnight seat w/studs or the stock pillow top. A local dealer has a Midnight with the Pillow Top.
  11. Most of you know all this already, this post is for the few new folks who might not be aware of the pitfalls of going to a dealer..........for anything other than to look at all the new bikes.......that is basically all dealers are good for. The main reason I do not let any dealer work on my ride is because of two situations that could have caused a lot of grief. The first was at a Power Sports dealer in South Carolina, this is a dealer who sells not only yamaha, but honda, kawasaki, suzuki...a few more. I needed new tires on my Honda Shadow 1100, did not have time to order some, wanted to go for a ride to North Carolina that weekend so I took the bike in for new tires and waited three hours while the work was done. On the way home, I suppose I had went about 12 miles I kept hearing a chatter like something was loose when I would stop for a light and the bike was at idle, so I pulled over and started looking. The front axle nut was hand tight, it was vibrating when I would stop........I have never trusted any dealer after that one. The other less serious incident was with my Harley 1200 Custom, I had taken it in to have a new drive belt installed and on the way home I kept hearing something squealing.......inspection found they had mounted the drive belt cover with the mounting bracket on the wrong side of the belt. So today, it was a little slow so I stopped into a dealer, with the intent to look around a bit, buy a couple oil filters , some oil etc..........boy have I been missing out!!! I was not aware how these stealers have really progressed to total rip-off status!1:big-grin-emoticon: Good Grief!! I looked at oil first, actually I wanted Mobil One, they did not have that, but had several other synthetics, at 13 dollars to 18 dollars a quart, yes I did not stutter, that is what they wanted for it. So I gave up on that idea and looked for gear oil........it was only 18 dollars for a quart, so I left all that on the shelf and walked to the counter and asked for two oil filters.........I had assumed they would be 12 to 15 dollars each as hey I am at a dealer! They wanted 27 dollars each.....and they still have them! I have also emailed two dealers , and called one of them about the clutch whine, gear box.......rear end.....harmonics.......whatever is causing it.........and neither emailed me back. The one I called will get back with me:rotf::rotf:ya right, I do not have a blue smilie..do not want to hold my breath that long:sign20: . Just thought I would post my recent dealership experiences......not news to most of you. Working on getting my windshield situation resolved....once done. I plan to invest as much time as it takes to come up with the real reason behind the whine issue, not that I dislike the bike.......I love it........just I like to find a resolution to things. If any of you are newbies........stay away from dealers, yes I know someone is going to chime in and say, hey dummie, my dealer is not like this.......wanna bet? Deal another hand and see what happens!! Kit
  12. Does anyone have an extra front plate and damper that hold the windshield at the bottom? (part number 58 & 59) I stopped by the dealer yesterday and Yamaha doesn't show the front plate any longer as being listed. I need one....
  13. Over the last two weeks (since the 08 line up came out) I have emailed a half dozen or so dealer in my region, northwest ohio, southern Michigan, northeast Indiana, about an out the door price on an 07 blue/raven. These were dealers that have ran ads on the net and in auto traders listing the 07. Only one dealer responded! and this was a dealer that sold two 07s in the last week. What is going on? I also thought salespersons worked on commission. Can anyone explain to me why a dealer would not jump at the chance to make a sale? I bet Honda would. There now I feel better.
  14. sold my ride 4 weeks ago, hoping to go to a dealer to sit on a rsv to make sure i'm a good fit for it. every dealer tells me the same story " we don't carry that bike because nobody wants them they want goldwings" the thing is i want one, but i really would like to sit on one before i order one. does new jersey differ in taste from the rest of the usa. any suggestions? i thing i will try pennsylvania, the eastern part.i live in morris county.
  15. How long should i give the dealer to fix my 07 for the rear end noise:sick: before i start jumping up and down and screamming? I dropped it off last week and they are just getting to take the final drive off. They say they spoke to the Yama service rep and it seems as though they waiting for the rep to tell them what to look for and how to repair. I thought these dealers were supossed to be service tech's.
  16. Ok, New bike, new world of differents issues, of course I prefer these new problems than the olders. Situation: Get the Star4772 (Joe) 1997 royal star (6300 miles), it comes with mounting passing lamps bar (No passing lamps), wind deflectors hardware (No deflectors included) and installed leather saddlebags and non installed plastic saddlebags. After digging around, got the missing parts: Deflectors, Passing Lamps Not the big deal, now apart from pay the 88$ for the dealer installation someone knows how to align the passing lamps. It seems impossible to relocate the lamps one you mount both the lamp and the turning light on each side. The beam is lighting the floor around 7 to 9 feets on front of the bike. Suggestions???? (Please nothing related to put 88$ on a dealer...)
  17. Posted on 7/29 about my electrical system gone whacko on the 02 RSV. After checking everyting I could, finally caved and took it in to the dealer. The good news is they found the problem, the Power Amp or MCU unit had failed. This is an audio component, but also has some of the guages and part of the starter system running through it. The bad news is this little beauty is over $1000.00 along with the starter relay that fried and labor, total $1500.00. I'm 4 months out of warranty so they said I had to eat it. Thought I would give customer service a call for giggles and lo and behold they agreed to cover the parts. Back on the road and so far so good. Of course the dealer had never heard of this happening before, sound familiar? Tony was the contact man at customer service and did a great job and quick. This is just for information in case anybody else has the problem. Thanks.
  18. 2001 Venture. Any suggestions? Checked with the Yamaha dealer and nobody seems to be carrying whitewalls.
  19. On the way to Branson, MO. I went to downshift getting off at my exit and Hmmmm my foot couldnt find the shifter, I finally had to look down and it was laying on the floorboard. Slid it back on and held it on with the inside of my boot unitl we fould a Yamaha Dealer about an hour later who fixed me up. Just wanted to throw this out there, ya'll might just want be sure everything is snug down there.
  20. I finally found the reason why a couple of cylinders were idling super rich - the tips of two idle mixture screws were missing, busted off by some previous owner! In looking at the carb exploded diagram it doesn't seem that these screws have a part number and I am guessing that they aren't available from the dealer (I'll check tomorrow morning). Anyone know a source for these little stinkers? Anyone have a couple of old carbs they might like to sell? Feeling a little gloomy right now. zag
  21. I have a 2006 Black Cherry. Can anyone tell me what should be done by the dealer on the 8000 mile check up?
  22. Well, I took my bike into the dealer to have the clutch whine checked out and hopefully have it covered under warranty. After the dealer had it for 5 days they called me back and told me that Yamaha won't replace the clutch basket. Hearing this and reading the prior threads on the forum I called Yamaha customer service. In short, they are doing NOTHING to help me out. I even said to them, "So let me get this right, Yamaha's position is to do nothing in this situation - even though the company has paid to have this situation addressed previously." The customer service person agreed with my statement. Between the clutch whine and the HORRIBLE wobble in the front end (the dealer stated everything was tight and up to specs - even the tire balanced out perfectly) my enjoyment of riding this bike is going south very fast. Just a B*%&H sesstion here. Hope everyone's Venture is whine and wobble free.
  23. Just in here doing some research. I've ridden a VTX 1800C for the last three years (many other bikes prior to that) and I'm ready for a change. I rode the X from Jax, Fl to the race at Sebring a week or so ago and stopped to buy some gloves at a Suzuki dealer on Hy 27 in the Lake Wales area. He had an '06 RSTD that he had bought from a car dealer and the salesman talked me in into riding it. I liked it well enough but passed on the deal. I had just stopped to buy gloves after all. However, I decided on the ride home that I might want to get something with a bit more of a touring bent without going the dresser route. It was a long and chilly trip. I've been looking hard at different bikes since then and I've realized that the TD pretty much fits the bill. I rode a beautiful Valk Interstate that I imagined would set me on fire but I didn't like the cylinders in the way of my feet. I've ridden Harley's and, well, they're OK but feel very small after riding others and there's no way to get decent power W/O spending big bucks. The new Roadliner/Stratoliners are nice but for some reason the TD seems to strike a better chord. Looked at others too but nothing got me going. I'll miss the VTX's kick in the butt, but I'm slowing down a bit and think I'll enjoy the comfort of the TD. I hope my newb questions don't bug anyone too much and I'll read the archives as much as possible before asking obvious questions. I'm a long-time VTXOA member so I know folks get tired of reading the same questions year after year.
  24. I am looking in my manual and online for spark plug wires/caps. In talking to the dealer ( Uh oh, bad word) they are telling me that the wires, caps and coils are one piece. But, it looks to me that they are two distinct parts. Am I right, and the dealer is trying to rip me off? And If they are two separate parts, how do they connect? Mike :confused24: :confused24: :confused24: :confused24:
  25. I have just had my 05 RSMV into the shop where I had to insist on a new clutch basket because of the chirping. The dealer ordered and installed it, I had requested that he order ( i forget which one I was told about on here) not sure if he did or not, I was told that yamaha made four different ones for this problem. IT is louder than before, and when I returned to the dealer he told me that it was a one time fix from the factory and they would not do it again at there expense.Question...who has had it done and was the results satisfactory? What part number was used? After I get some more info IM going right to factory rep. I also had the exaust leak on the right Y and after much arguing with the service manager I asked for a second opinion from the factory and was told that the factory does not get involved in such matters. I knew It was Bull*%#$ he was feeding me so I told him I would contact the factory myself, all of a sudden my exaust pipe was ordered and installed.
