  1. ok i have an old dell e510 it has 512 mb of ram yeah i know thats and old computer well it can be up dated to 4gb of ram. well i went on to flebay and got me 2 gb of ram. 1 stick each of 1 gb. after installing these things. the darn computer just went beep beep beep. and would not boot up? so take it apart again remove this ram place back the old ones and bam shes running again. after a carefull look they sent me what looks like a HP ram? now im no computer whiz but im pretty sure that wont work. after sending a request to the store on flebay they said its a generic one and they never had problems with this ram working before in my type of dell? and made a nasty remark that they left positive on my report. but if they get a negitive from me they will not exchange this. so looks like im out $24 bucks. unless im installing it wrong.
  2. When ever i try to print a statement from my bank my computer always crashes. If I open the statements online, it opens a pdf file. I thought maybe it was IE causing the problem but If I save the document to a file, close down all the programs, open the PDF with READER and try to print....the same crash happens. What it is ..... I get a message that says "Spooler subsystem app has encountered a problem and needs to close" or something like that. I end up with my computer not seeing the printer (HP colour laserjet 2600) It has happened many times in the past and I have to delete spool printer and driver files, then into the registry and delete a couple of files. I know how to make it work again...but not how to stop it from crashing when I want to print my bank statements!! I don't understand because I can print other PDF files EDIT: Running Windows Vista Home Premium, Service Pack 2 IE9 64 bit Operating System Quad core 2.2Ghz 4 Gig Ram
  3. Internet Explorer had been working just fine with this site, but a couple of days ago it decided that it didn't want to log in here anymore. Firefox still works great, and from my work computer (also IE) it logs in fine. When I try to log in with IE on this computer I get the message Invalid Redirect URL ( http://venturerider.org./modules/Jig/index.php?&) Any ideas?? Frank D.

  5. Kirby

    linux os

Ok, I know this has nothing to do with a motorcycle but here goes anyway. Do any of you use Linux or one of the variations of Linux Os on your computers? I'm putting together a system and would like to know what to expect. Is it hard to set up and maintain? I'm just tired of paying "taxes" to Microsoft all the time. I'm looking for something different. As far as my knowledge of computers, I'm not a computer nerd, but I'm also not computer illiterate. Any advice would be much appreciated.
  6. I have a need. I want to post word files on our server at work and I want to secure them so people cannot print out the document/file. I want them read only and no able to print. Does anyone know if can be set-up to do this??? If yes I will need specific instructions because....lets just say I am not as computer literate as I would like. :rotf:

  8. Will anyone have a laptop that I could periodically borrow (for a few minutes) - and if so, what kind? I have to figure couple of things out - and asking in advance as I am not that computer literate. Thanks, everyone.
  9. I got my hands on an old emac 6.4 computer running OSX 10.4.11 that I want to set up for a 5 year old and I'm having a hard time finding educational software that will run on this old platform. If anyone has software for an old Mac OS gathering dust in a box somewhere I'd be interested in it. Thanks for looking.
  10. I just got 6 old laptops from work that they were going to trash, the one in question is a Dell Insipiron 2500 with Win 2000 pro. The person that used this computer no longer works there and it's password protected, no one know what it may be, is there any way I can get around this and reset the user and password. I don't want to do a fresh install because there are some programs i suspect on there that I want to keep and use.

  16. Spanish Computer A SPANISH Teacher was explaining to her class that in Spanish, unlike English, nouns are designated as either masculine or feminine. 'House' for instance, is feminine: 'la casa.' 'Pencil,' however, is masculine: 'el lapiz.' A student asked, 'What gender is 'computer'?' Instead of giving the answer, the teacher split the class into two groups, male and female, and asked them to decide for themselves whether computer' should be a masculine or a feminine noun. Each group was asked to give four reasons for its recommendation. The men's group decided that 'computer' should definitely be of the feminine gender ('la computadora'), because: 1. No one but their creator understands their internal logic; 2. The native language they use to communicate with other computers is incomprehensible to everyone else; 3. Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long term memory for possible later retrieval; and 4. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending half your paycheck on accessories for it. (THIS GETS BETTER!) The women's group, however, concluded that computers should be Masculine ('el computador'), because: 1. In order to do anything with them, you have to turn them on; 2 They have a lot of data but still can't think for themselves; 3. They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time they ARE the problem; and 4. As soon as you commit to one, you realize that if you had waited a little longer, you could have gotten a better model.. The women won.
  17. Anyone know how to jailbreak an ipod??????????
  18. Ok, I was cleaning up my computer last night and came across this link from several months ago. Just wondering has anyone on here tried this on their bike or know of someone who has? Looks interesting. Might even get rid of the "chirp and/or whine". http://www.efmautoclutch.com/dirt.shtml

  21. Ok, for all you computer nerds out there, here's a question that I am trying to figure out. Is there a way to tell whether the problem is my motherboard or if it's the processor. Several months ago lightning ran in on my computer and killed it. I think it was just static electricity and not a direct hit with lightning. There was a pop and it died but this was while the computer was turned off and unplugged. Anyway, I took it to a place for insurance estimate and they told me it was either the motherboard or the processor. Insurance paid off, but I never had it fixed. Now I've decided to try to fix it myself. I did mange to salvage my harddrive to another computer so all data was saved. I'd just like to tinker with this one. So, ya'll get your thinking caps on and see what you can come up with.
  22. i have noticed that we have several 'IT' types computer guys here on this forum and i would ask for your help. info you probably need: 1) Firefox is browser 2) Windows XP 3) McAfee protection 4) NetGear wireless router (but have my computer connected via Ethernet cable) problem..... several weeks ago when i turned my computer on it tried booting from a disc (don't know how it happened) i resolved that issue. then last week in the morning my computer seemed to work fine but later i could not connect to the internet - i turned my firewall off and could then connect to the internet - so i just restored to default my firewall settings and and have had no issues since then connecting to internet - but since then i started getting pop ups opening a new browser window with urls such as..."googleads.g.doubleclick.net"..... "epoclick.com/?ads=12587652904" the last digits will change each time a new window opens..... and other pop ups. solution (?).... i tried use Adblock filters to stop the windows without success, but not sure if i have written the filters correctly. i just read online that if i look into my NetGear Gateway settings and see my Primary & Secondary DNS settings at something other than all zeros then i have been hijacked - the solution was to reset those gateways to all zeros, which i tried but got an error saying the gateways were were not set correctly. i really hate to use malware software to solve my problem(s) as in the past i felt the malware software was creating its own issues. so....if any of you guys have any suggestions please feel free to post them up .....THANKS
  23. I forgot to put in the year model on my Sportser ad, which loaded just fine after I reduced the picture size. (Thanks again, Freebird!) Any way of modifying the ad? The bike is a 2000 model. If one of the admin folk have the computer power, they have my permission to make the change, or give me instructions on how to make it myself. Sorry for the hassle. As you can see, I am NOT an electron pusher at all.
  24. I am wanting to test the factory intercom on my 1st gen Venture. The bike has the plugs in the amplifier for the headsets. I did not want to invest in new headsets until I know it works. I have searched through the forum and can't find any answers. I found the pinout diagram for the plugs and made two headsets from some computer headsets I had laying around. I can get the speakers in them to work but can't get the mic to work. I don't know why. Is the stock system capeable of using the mics or am I wasting my time? Or are the mics from the computer headsets not compatable with the Yamaha intercom? Any input is welcome.
  25. I got an 86 xvz1300 parts bike. I use some parts off it. Now looking at it as a street rat project. What electrical systems can I eliminate ie. class, audio, instrument cluster, ect. and still make it run? I'd like a bare bones basic system including charging/starting, ignition and lights. Will the engine run without the computer stuff in the gauge cluster? Would like the anti-dive to work. Someone must have tried this before any help would be greatly appreciated.
