  1. I just received my new battery cables from Paul...Does anyone have any suggestions, do's and don'ts etc on how to install them.. Thanks in advance
  2. Hey, everyone - I've installed 1 1/2" risers on my 2003 RSV and of course there is sever binding turning to the right. I split the throttle switch housing, intending to remove the cables and reroute them from in front of the forks to behind the forks, but I absolutely have no idea how to get enough slack to get the cables out of the little black plastic wheel and/or how then to get that out of the housing. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance - Bill
  3. Hi all, could someone explain how to fit the throttle cables properly to the XVZ1200 Venture royal? I bought my bike in bits and have just had a new set of cables to fit but cant, once you try fitting them to the throttle cable assembly there's no room to play?
  4. I'm in the process of changing to the Flanders bars. Last night I took the faring, windshield, seat and gas tank off. I plan on taking everything off the old bars tonight. I have new grips and cables. I have never replaced the grips, bars or cables on a bike before and am looking for advice inspiration and insight. There is a good procedure on another site, but it talks about drilling holes in the flanders bars, and I keep thinking what holes. Any advise or help is appreciated.
  5. I want to put some apes on my bike, does anyone know where I can get the longer, after market cables? Thank for your help...
  6. I finally bought a new set of cables for the intercom system from Sierra and I am curious as to how the end of the passenger one is supposed to lay. These wires were original and the holes where the pins would go were rusty. Currently, the old one in the back is held on with a wire tie on the right passenger hand bar. In the package came two holders for the ends. Did the rear one come with a holder when new? If not, did y'all use the holder that came with the kit? If so, where did you stick it? Is yours on the left or right side? I have had this bike since 94 and just now working my way to headsets, geez.
  7. On my '07 RSV the CB and radio antennas are reversed from the sides they were mounted to on my '04 RSV. The CB is on the right and the am/fm is on the left. The CB seems to work about as good on the '07 as the '04. My question is, is there a way to determine if the antenna staffs have been improperly installed or if by chance they are correct and the cables were just routed to the opposite sides? Is there a way to visually check this short of tearing into the radio and tracking down the cables? This has been bugging me for a while and I am about to tear into it. Thanks, Dennis
  8. This happened a few months ago. When leaving work one day I found my boss sitting in the parking lot with a dead car. He left his lights on all day. Since he had cables I said sure, I'd try to give his car a jump. I mean after all both are 12 volt systems. Well after leaving the cables hooked up for about 5-10 minutes (yes the bike was running and reving) we couldn't get enough juice to flow to the car battery. I guess there just isn't enough juice to really do a jump start. Maybe I could have trickle charged his battery for an hour then maybe it would start. Anyways, another co-worker came out and we used his car to jump start the bosses car. It started right up then. Nothing fried on any vehicle, so lessoned learned the easy way.
  9. Anybody go this route? http://www.baronscustom.com/catalog/display/759/index.html I have the risers on already. They state no change in cables. Not sure how well that works.
  10. I have problems starting my bike when it's warm(hot) It seems like the battery is dead but the battery tests good and I tried a differnt starter I remember seeing something about updated battery cables awhile back
  11. what is the procedure for installing the barons handlebar extensions? I removed handlebars does not seem to be enough play in cables to put extensions in. Also do i leave the rubber spacers that that rest against fairing in?
  12. Hi and Merry Christmas to all, Things have been hectic the last few weeks. I tore into Mocha and got lots of parts. Just now getting around to the work. The base is on Exodus until Jan 4th so I can take some time and work (or play!). Finished the fuse holder replacement tonight. Took too many cold meds and couldn't sleep so I went to the garage and worked. The original holder clips for the fuses were so brittle that they cracked when I pulled them out. Replaced it with a small 6 gang ATC holder. Then I decided to get rid of the OEM main fuse. Put in a Maxifuse holder. Tomorrow is battery cables. I have a large supply of 4ga. welding cable and all of the terminals already. They have to make a difference. The OEM cables are WIMPY. Quick question on the main fuse. It is about a 12ga. wire into the harness. Does that really carry the entire load of the electrical system? If so, before I put in a larger stator I think perhaps a new wire might be in order. Hey Todd - found why neutral was hard to hit! The bellcrank is loose on the shift shaft splines. Hopefully it isn't worn to the point I can't get it tight. I did a bit of soldering this weekend so I will drop your connector in the mail right after the holidays. I picked up 6 of the sockets. They were less than 2 bucks apiece. Safe and happy holidays to all. J.B.
  13. Don. When you put your Flanders bars on did you have to swap out the throttle cables AND the hydraulic hoses? And where did you get these items? My local dealer does not have any extra length cables for the Venture. But then they have a tendency to stick with just a couple of suppliers. Thanks
  14. Could somone give me the model or style number of the Flander's replacement handle bars. I believe I want to go back with them when I replace the damaged ones. Also, is it necessary to use longer brake and clutch lines and throttle cables to go with the Flander's bars? Thanks
  15. After installing risers, I how fine my throttle cables are too short when I turn my handlebar hard right. Not bad on a straight run or turning left but tight enough to cause concerns on the right. I would like to re-route the cables in a more direct path but not sure how to go about disconnecting from the throttle grip. I can only see 1 screw...is that it? Is there anything I should worry about falling when I take the grip apart? Looks like I will need to move the master cylindre fluid and brake handle...am I right in my assumption? Anything I might need to know before I tackle this, please feel free to let me know... Thanks
  16. Well, the battle I've been fighting with my electrical system since last fall continues. I replaced the Battery, main ground cables and rectifier. I still can't seem to get any life out of the battery. I charge it up with the battery tender, I starts fine, Charges fine while it's running, and starts right back up if I don't wait too long, but if I leave it for a couple of hours, I can barely get the engine to turn over once. I measured the resistance of the entire system between the battery cables with the battery disconnected and key off and read 47 kohms. Is this normal and if not, what might be causing the draw? I haven't yet replaced the cable between the starter and the solenoid yet, I intend to, but I don't think that is the problem. I'm getting real tired of watching everyone else's bike through the windshield of my suburban while mine sits in my garage because I don't trust it to start if I stop anywhere.
  17. Hello all Well I've been working on making a bench tester for the 1st Gen TCI's and I could use the cables/plugs that go to the TCI. Has anyone parted out a 1st Gen bike where I could get these cables? It would simplify hooking up a TCI if I had these. DonB I can be reached at donb@mnsi.net TIA
  18. Anyone have some extra headset cables they would be willing to part with? I need the lower cable that hooks into the bike and this upper one. http://www.twowheelsound.com/id55.html. Thanks, Jay
  19. I was recently given a 2000 Venture by a friend. He got it from a relative not working.Hooked up jumper cables and nothing. He put in a new battery and got nothing.Checked the fuses all good. The story goes the bike died after somebody hooked up cables for a jump backwards. At this point he gave it to me. I intend to double check what he did but would like some advice on what to check next.Thank You in advance for any help.
  20. I've been scrounging around the Internet last 2 days looking for some Information on Repairing Control cables. --- Did not find much except, " Buy a new one " --- This morning I found this site, has some pretty good information, complete with photo's --- http://www.dansmc.com/cables.htm ----- --- http://www.flandersco.com/FlanCableSearch.html Might be of interest to sombody, also good info for snowmobile controls cable, and maby ever bycyle's. --- My new set of cables should be here today.
  21. Carburetor maintenance I have used this procedure for over 15 years on all types of carburetors from lawn mowers to high performance cars and have always had good results as long as the carburetor was in good mechanical order. Cleaning the carburetors will not help a carburetor with a worn nozzle or a leaky diaphragm on a slide. The carburetor cleaner I use is berryman b-12 chemtool in the spray can and the pint size can, but any good carburetor cleaner should work if you can get it in a spray and pint can. Cleaning the carburetors Place the bike on the center stand and remove the cover of the air cleaner and the filter exposing the top of the carburetors, start the engine and open the throttle to make sure the slides are all moving; if one or more of the slides fails to move you may have a broken diaphragm or a clogged jet. Use the spray can to clean the insides of the carburetors spraying into the jets at the top and the throat of the carburetors . If the engine stalls restart and continue until it looks clean. Replace the filter and cover, now turn the gas tank valve to the off position and restart the engine and run it until it stops. Remove the supply hose (top hose) from the fuel pump and replace it with a suitable sized hose long enough to reach the ground and put it into the pint can of cleaner. Now turn the key on and allow the fuel pump to fill the carburetors before trying to start the engine. (note the fuel pump has a safety feature and you may have to turn the key off and on until the pump fills the carburetors) Start the engine using the choke to keep the engine running about 1000 rpm and allow it to run for about 5 min., then go get a cup of coffee or clean the outsides of the carburetors to use up the can of spray, waiting about 20 min. Restart the engine and (*) use the throttle to increase the rpm and work all the moving parts of the carburetors, the run for 4 min. and wait for another 20 min. if you used the spray on the outside of the carburetors be sure to re- oil the moving parts with a light machine oil and if all of the slides worked when you tested them you can re connect the fuel line while your waiting. when the time has past you can turn the gas valve to the on or reserve position and open the drain valves on the carburetors (lower right on each carburetor) when the carburetors are empty close the valves and turn the key on to fill the carburetors with fuel. also if you are storing the bike for the winter you could drain the carburetors and not restart the engine. (*)IF one or more of the slides did not move when you tested them you should re-test them at this time by removing the air cleaner cover and filter and watching the slides. If one of them are still not moving, note the problem slide and turn off the engine. Remove the cover plate and inspect the diaphragm then carefully remove the spring and slide from the carburetor. Before continuing we suggest you use eye protection. You will see a jet in the upper right side of the opening place the nozzle of the spray can against this jet cover the opening with your hand so that the excess spray won't get in your eyes and give it a good shot; cleaner should come out of the top of the carburetor. if it seems clear then wipe off the slide and the hole it came out of and reassemble the slide making sure that you replace the diaphragm exactly as you found it! Fred J. Vogt Throttle cables The throttle cables on the Venture can cause you some grief if they brake on your vacation or even on a 100 mile Sunday ride if your 50 miles from home. There are four cables that are used to control the carburetors and they use a push/pull method; that is they use a positive return on the throttle that dose not rely on the return spring to shut down the carburetors. there is a fifth cable that is used by the Venture curse which will disable the curse if it fails. all five cables connect together at the control box and you can view it by looking up behind the left hand fairing at the front of the bike. I have not found a way to replace these cables with out removing the left fairing, radio and the black plastic shield behind the radio. This could be done with the tools in the tool kit supplied with your Venture, so you could repair the cables if you had a spare. Although any of the five cables could brake, most of the failures I have heard of are the two cables that connect the hand throttle to the control box. these cables normally fail at the hand throttle on the handle bars because they are worked more and are exposed to water and dust, more then the ones at the control box because the cables are in side. If the return cable brakes it will not stop you, but you will notice that the Engine will lose RPMs slower than normal and the hand throttle will feel funny. Maintenance of the cables is simple and should be done every 10,000 miles or once a year. To check and oil the throttle cables disassemble the hand throttle, clean and use A drop of light machine oil (sewing machine oil) work it in and reassemble the throttle. Just in case you have a problem before you get a chance to check the cables here are some thoughts on how to get home or to a repair shop. You could use the choke lever to increase the RPMS then get the bike over 35 mph, set the curse and use it to increase your speed. You could also get the MTS towing package offered through MTA and be only a phone call away from help. Fred Vogt MTA 1037
