  1. I'm a relatively new member and Venture owner, and I just wanted to say thanks to everyone here. Over the past week I did some winter projects on the Venture that include: passing lamp install using Freebird's wiring diagram for the relay and Tony Dathan's spacer, an auxillary fuse panel behind the battery like several members suggested, Goose's carb heater switch, Goose's fix for the broken windshield bracket tabs (yes, broken tabs with only 3400 miles), and CarbonOne's bracing for the front crash guards. All of your postings on these issues saved me lots and lots of time and money, and for this I am thankful. In addition ... I am thankful that today I got to ride for a couple of hours! It was mostly sunny, upper 30s, 5-10 mph wind ... awesome!! Art Thomas, aka "sallys dad":thumbsup2::thumbsup2:
  2. My radio controller has broken at the base, where it attaches to the bike Has any one else had this problem?? And if I glue it, will it hold okay??
  3. The CB antenna is broken off at the load coil on my '03 RSMV. I rarely use the CB, and when I do it is basically communicating with the group I am riding with, so great performance is not necessary. Does anyone have one of the OEM CB antennas that they would like to get rid of? Thanks! Don
  4. You may have seen some TV coverage a couple of weeks ago of a massive dust storm that swept across Australia and turned Sydney a deep red colour. This is a shot a mate sent me of the storm front as it passed through Broken Hill. Broken Hill is in the very west of my State and close to the 'epicentre' of the storm where it originated in central South Australia. The last I heard the dust was settling on the north island of New Zealand.
  5. i am lookin for a pair of sidecovers for my bike(83venture 1200) .. i dont care if they are cracked or broken... i want to cut them own if they are cracked r broken.. but if they are good then i will not.. i lost my sidecovers on the way to cody this year.. thanx.. and how much are you askin??:bang head:
  6. Paula is fine, she has a few scrapes on her elbow and leg, but all in all she is doing great, she was up and around when we got back to the cabin and got up Sat. morning and fixed breakfast for us and helped out with more registrations and serving food, she is one tough lady. I ought to know she bullies me around all the time..............the bike is okay, just a broken windshield and a couple of small scrapes on the front fender. She went down in soft shoulder that was freshly laid down.
  7. This is happening waaay too much!!! Please pray for James. James had a motorcycle accident today at about 3:30 on Transit Road near Sheridan Drive. A tire blew and he tried to compensate the next thing he remembers is being in the ambulance. We think the motorcycle flipped. He is in ECMC with 8 broken ribs, his lung collapsed but is Ok now, a broken collar bone and a fractured shoulder blade. Please keep him in your prayers and maybe cheer him up with a visit when you can...he should be in the hospital for a few days
  8. Just installed IE 8 this week now I'm having trouble logging in to chat...

  10. Does anybody have a broken radio control unit laying around? I lost (broke) the volume knob off of mine. Of course, you can't just replace the knob, you need to replace the whole unit - to the tune of $600+!! Any help is much appreciated!
  11. Mother-in-law was in the garage today and stepped wrong and fell. When she went down, she hit her left eyebrow on the highway peg of the RSV. No broken bones, just a major shiner and 50 stitches. RSV-1, Mother-in-law-0 She is already laughing about it, so all is well.
  12. does anybody have side panels for an 85 VR the ones I have broken at the contact points or a site to buy?? thanks
  13. OK... how do I begin. Lets get straight to it. Yesterday at around 4pm just east of Devils Lake, Big Bob had a serious crash. He left the bike at around 62 miles per hour. He was taken to Devils Lake hospital and then life flighted to GrandForks as Devils Lake didnt have the type of care he needed. He is alive and unless there is a serious change he will stay that way. His injuries consist of this head injury, plus several stitches on his forehead...they did a nice job doing that. eye injury...they are quit worried about him loosing the right eye. 6 broken ribs and possible lung injury which they are very concerned about. broken wrist which has had surgery and will likely need more. some but not much road rash from the sleeve of his leather jacket being pushed up his arm. broken or fractured disc...they dont seem too worried about this as he was moving his legs after the crash. Details about the crash. He had fallen back and had told us he was going to. Then the last bike Pete, reported that he couldnt see him anymore even on the long straights. We stopped and Marilyn turned around and went to see what was up. While she was gone a soldier stopped and asked us if we were riding with another gentleman with a white bike. Yes....well he crashed and was back near the rest stop. We turned our bikes around and headed there....Marilyn in the mean time was racing back to us trying to call us on the cb to tell us the news. She had arrived just as they were working on him. She was almost sick. Another lady raced across the highway and told her he was alive and was going to Devils Lake hospital. We arrived on scene to find his bike and trailer totally demolished in the center median. The persons following him said he was doing 62 miles per hour (8 mph below the speed limit) when his trailer started to go and it was almost like a huge gust of wind just threw him into a high speed wobble. He crashed hard on his right side. One of the folks following was an off duty paramedic. The police were almost literally on the scene as they were writing a ticket on the other side of the highway about a half mile down. Response time was very quick. By the time we arrived he was already on his way to the hospital. Bob was lucky in some ways....he was fully geared up...jacket helmet, chaps, steel toe boots....the gear saved his life the police said. We went to the hospital and he was in a great deal of pain, but managed to say that he hurt like hell. We went to GrandForks last night and stayed the night there and went to see him today. He looked better but is intubated due to the lungs, and in a semi- drug induced coma to help with pain and because he was becoming combative...he hated the tube. We left there around 4 ish and are now at Garys. His daughter is with him. She has all his personal belongings. We had cleaned out everything he had from his bike and loaded up our bikes to take for him. A prayer would be nice. He is a tough man and should be ok in the long run. The gang here was going to run to GrandForks but when we informed them he was in a coma they decided not to. We will update this thread Monday night when we get home. We are stopping to see him on our way back. He is covered with travel insurance thank goodness. Take care everyone and thanks for listening.
  14. Ok, so the mrs has fallen in love with the '09 RSV. I have been very slowly getting my 89 ready to paint, have been accumulating parts, and getting ready to put the bike back together this winter. I even have a set of mac mufflers on order. the bike has a new rear rotor, brakes front and rear, (progressive springs still in box) new clutch and slave, radio and cb dont work, all plastic is in good shape, most is sanded and ready to paint. A few of the tabs are broken, and the trunk lid needs some work where the hinge goes. It's not broken but is cracked. the only thing that didnt work before i stripped the bike down was the cruise, radio, and cb. 87000 miles, motor and tranny very strong. The question is would I get more out of the bike putting it back together and selling it in the spring, or parting it out over the next few months and saving the cash for downpayment? I know how hard it is to get parts for the 1st gens, so thinking this may not be a bad way to go.
  15. ...for the console that I can buy that is in one piece? I have never had one and the console I got has one that is broken. It would be nice to see that button covered.
  16. I'm sorry to report I crashed my 2007 RSV on Monday in Pineville, Ky. Myself and 5 of my buddies were returning home fm a 4 day(1500 mile) trip and was within 2 hours of home when it happened. A lady crossed 2 southbound lanes to enter the norhbound lane we were in and caused 4 automobiles and 2 bikes to crash. She didn't even get a scratch on her vehicle. I'm so mad I could spit. She was cited for "driver inattention and no proof of insurance. My bike is in the shop and I'll find out in a couple days if it was totalled or not. My buddies bike, which my bike hit, is a ultra classic and probably sustained 2000 dollars damage. I don't have any broken bones due to wearing all my gear. My helmet saved my life and my boots and armored jacket kept me relatively free fm broken bones and very little road rash. I've been off work for 2 days because I'm so sore, even in places I didn't know I had, ha ha. I have to tell you my brakes "locked-up" and I skidded which is why I went down. I had no option but to hit the brakes hard. Yamaha needs to fix these brakes and they'd have an even greater bike. I don't know if I'll continue riding this bike because if my wife had been with me she would've become a projectile. In closing, I just want to remind you to wear your gear, even if it is hot and be careful. There's a lot of stupid people out there and stupid does hurt!!! You guys are great!! Eddie Flinchum--Winchester, KY.
  17. Hi, I have a question about the first gens vents. I bought an 83 VR and while Im not trying to make it a museum piece, I do want to fix what I can and make the bike as functional as possible. I have a couple of broken vents on the fairing (the ones on the sides of the fairing that blow cool air on your legs) and one of my vents covering the back two cylinders is broken and doesnt want to stay open. My question is in 2 parts.....first, I have noticed several pics on the Venture Galleries of 83 - 86's that dont have vents over the back two cylinders, instead that spot is open and on some there is a curved piece of chrome. Is this something yamaha did? Like the difference between Ventures and Venture Royale models? Or is this a modification that riders have come up with to let the engine have a little more air flow. The other question is about locating new vents....any suggestions? Ebay? Websites? Junkyards? Thanks for any feedback Paul:thumbsup:
  18. On 26 July at 8:36AM my 06 Venture and I went down on a Exit off I-95 South near Newton MA while enroute to a PGR Mission. My injuries: 4 broken ribs; 4 broken lower back vertebra; crushed left foot;twisted left ankle and knee; lacerations/abrasions to lower leg leg. Venture: $7K in damages. Bike is at Dealership in MA being repaired/restored. I am at home licking my wounds and attempting to create soft asphalt. Ride safe out there my Brothers and Sisters.....that road has no mercy! Boomer.......who failed to complete PGR Mission #103.
  19. July 24, 4pm, I got distracted looking at the scenery. At about 50 mph I came up behind a car stopped for a left turner way too late, locked up both wheels on my 03 Midnight Venture, and was able to slow to about 35 mph before deciding to take the (very soft) berm on the right. Witnesses said the bike flipped 4 times in the air, landing on its left side, while I plowed shoulder first into the dirt. I remember seeing the bike in the air over me, and feeling relieved that it missed me--you know how everything goes into slow motion. A state trooper gave me a ticket for "lane control failure" in the ER. I'm home from the hospital, but still on oxygen because it hurts too much to get a deep breath. I have a broken collar bone, a broken rib, three broken cervical vertabrae, massive bruising, and a dead right arm. They say my arm will probably return, but it may take up to 2 years. My Shoei helmet absolutely saved me. The dealer has the bike and says it is probably totalled, but won't know for sure until later this week. I've been riding for 45 years, and would not have believed you could get this much damage at that speed, without hitting anything but soft dirt. This was entirely my fault, and I consider myself very lucky. Now I need some advice. I've never filed a damage claim in all my 59 years. I suspect the insurance company will be looking out for their own interests, but what should I do to protect mine? Thanks in advance, Ken Stewart
  20. I had a small accident a couple months back that resulted in a low side slide down a mountain highway. The damage to the bike is purely cosmetic and is just about reassembled with some new parts....... one of which is the oem Audio Controller that sits on the left handlebar. I ended up with 7 broken ribs, a punctured lung and a broken collar-bone that was broken so bad that it needed a 6 inch plate with 8 screws to hold it together........... there goes my summer !! Anyway .............. back to the Controller ----------- the broken one works just fine and my insurance company replaced it with a new one at a cost of $872.xx Canadian. I am looking to replace the front panel of the broken Controller to make another good one. It seems almost criminal to throw the broken one in the garbage. Anyone have a busted Controller with a good front panel they want to part with ?? ken.jo@shaw.ca
  21. Well, the Warden and I have made it home from the Grand Canyon trip. It was WONDERFUL. There is no way that I would have the words needed to describe the majesty of that marvelous wonder. Not only were the sights wonderful, but the people we met along the way were great too. We did 4500 miles in ten days, but the highlight of my trip was using my metric tools to repair a Harley that had broken down on the road in northern Az. I will post more details and the pics later, right now I am going to the recliner to rest some more.

    Accident

Clipped taillight and bumper of truck turning from my lane but decided to stop and wait instead. As I was already slowing it wasn't as bad as it could have been.Roads were wet and lost traction at last second. If he had kept moving I would have missed him.Thought hand was broken but it was only badly swollen and bruised as was left leg.Last I seen bike it was in rough shape(windshield / headlight / fairing / broken) but will look at it tomorrow. Will get back with more details

  25. I was washing my 05 and saw that the radiator cowling did not meet properly with the other one. Upon closer inspection I found that the tab was broken on the bottom, (right side). I have never had this cowling off. Is this something that needs to come off if you service the air filter? I have let the shop do the servicing since I got the bike. The bike was serviced last week, (June 11), and I sure did not see this when I washed and inspected the bike just prior to that. They checked the valves and did a full service on the bike, so was thinking they may have taken it off. Was going to ask them about it, but decided to ask here first, then go to them if it looks like it was their fault. Dennis, from Montana temporarily in New Mexico
