  1. I still have 83-93 fork braces left over from the last group buy. Anyone interested? If not, I guess the next stop will be Ebay. Here's a link to the ad in the classifieds. FORK BRACE
  2. After testing the waters, it looks like another 'Condor' fork brace group buy is in order. I checked with my supplier and we can get the same price as last year's at $50.00 bucks. So it'll be $60.00 total to your front door for those in the US, and $70.00 total for our VentureRider brothers north of the boarder in Canada due to the extra shipping costs. The flat rate shipping cost also covers the paypal fees. The braces will all be shipped via USPS Priority. Pic of the brace is attached. The Group buy has been closed off for some time now, but there's hope. Extra braces are still available and an ad has been posted in the Classifieds under 1stGen Parts. All payment info is also there. Thanks
  3. I found this on Ebay. FORK BRACE It'll be closing soon, and it's already more than..OK, not by much ...so far... our group buy brace. See what a great deal you guys are getting by belonging to VR.org....
  4. I'd just like to make a few comments about the fork brace and after market fork springs designed for the 1stGen Venture as there’s some misconception about what exactly they will do. Will the brace cure the dreaded high speed ‘Tank Slap’ experienced by some riders? No. The brace is not a cure-all Band-Aid. If your bike is experiencing high speed wobbles or tank slap it’s because the bike has a problem(s). Bad front or rear tire cap, out of round tire, bent rim, out of balance tire, weak fork springs, bent fork(s), bent main frame, worn steering head bearings, worn fork seals, low fork oil, high fork oil, worn axle bearings, etc. What the fork brace will do, along with new springs, is enhance the bike’s handling performance. They will improve the bike’s overall ride and stability. It will make panic stops smoother and more manageable. The effects of pot holes, curve tracking, rough surfaces will be reduced. Side torque due to uneven rough surfaces will be greatly reduced. In some instances a slight rebound wobble from small differences in rebound action due to seal or spring wear, will be reduced or eliminated. However, inevitably they will only continue to wear over time and will need to be addressed. These two mods should be done to every 1stGen on the road today. One is the after market fork brace. The other is improved fork springs. Both parts are relatively inexpensive, and the mods easy to perform, but the improvement in handling is huge. The OEM fork brace is inadequate, and cosmetic at best. All First Generation Ventures are 16 to 25 years old and are going to have weak springs. It’s a given. Improvements in spring technology have basically made the new OEM springs obsolete. If anyone is still riding around with original springs and brace on your bike, you’re short changing yourself, and your ride experience.
  5. OK that's it, curiosity and ignorance have finally gotten the better of me. I've read a lot of the posts regarding the fork brace including the big group purchase and differences/or not that it seems to make in your ride. I must admit that I've only had my Venture for a little less than 3 months and about 7,000 km's so my experience is limited on this bike. That having been said my previous ride (for the past 23 years) was an XJ1100 Maxim - This bike didn't have a fork brace. What is the big deal here??? In theory what does the fork brace do?? What is the theoretical (and practical for that matter) difference between no brace, the "weak"/OEM brace and the "stronger"/aftermarket brace that folks are purchasing? Can someone sort me out????
  6. The group buy deadline is May 31st so if any of you are still interested in picking up a fork brace check out http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=35289 Any questions...PM me. http://www.cast-aways.com/QUICKY/braceCompare%20(Small).jpg
  7. I have completed putting in my new steering bearings. BUT no where in the service manual does it give the torque spec. for the fork brace all our 1st gens have. Torque spec. is typically the result of female metal strength, size and thread of bolt. LOOKING at the bolt. I think 14 ft/lbs would be about right. Anyone know the spec for sure? Oh, and I do have the super brace. But I know that does not alter the OEM correct torque setting.
  8. does any one know of a company that makes a fork brace that will fit a 2007 venture mike

    Need bolts or bolt info

I believe it was at the Potato Creek rally in 2006(?) I purchased and installed a no-name "Superbrace" and now wish to remove it and reinstall the factory issue brace....the problem is I must have purchased new longer bolts for the new brace because they are much too long to be used on the stock brace. Does anyone either have four of the stock bolts that I can buy, or can someone at least give me the proper length of those bolts? Thanks.
  11. 2 questions (this pertains to my 83 Venture) - 1. I bought one of the fork braces that Condor was so kind to arrange a group buy for us this spring, and am just now getting around to installing it. It appears to be just a bit larger than my original, and I can't get it to slip into position. I loosened the pinch bolts as suggested in Condor's instructions, but no change. I am also working on installing a pair of chrome rotor covers (see below), so i went ahead and pulled the axle and allowed the wheel to drop down an inch or so (rotors are still just slightly in the calipers). None of this has made any difference in the clearance for the fork brace. When I set the original brace over the new brace, it does look a bit larger - about the size of the bevel that runs around the outer edge of the new brace - just eye-balling it, I would guess it is about a millimeter oversize on each end . Has anyone else who purchased these had a similar problem? 2. I bought a pair of chrome rotor covers last winter on eBay and after doing some searches on this site, found that originally they came with a replacement spacer that accounted for the extra width of the covers. When I pulled the axle, I expected a spacer/washer of some kind on the right side (since the speedometer assembly is on the left). The only kind of "spacer" on the entire assembly was a single collar-type piece that butts against the oil seal. This does not look at all like the diagram in the service manual (it shows 3 separate pieces). I have attached a picture. I was planning to turn down my spacer since I did not have a replacement. So the question now is whether I turn down the outer edge of this collar? (Don't see where i have much choice). Was just wondering if anyone had any insight into this. Windrider1983 (Mark Miller).
  12. I hope this doesn't sound too stupid, here goes, I need to change the plugs in my 2005 RSV. 10k mles the 2 in the back seem to be fairly easy to reach . My question is the 2 front plugs. Do you remove the brace (not sure what is called) that prevents access to these plugs? And if so what problems can that lead to. Also what plugs do you guys recommend? Thanks
  13. I got to take it out on somebody and you are a pretty good target.... My radio suddenly stopped working. And I know why. It is Condor's fault. See the way I figure is like this. With that new fork brace on the bike, I have been joyfully entering the curves and appreciating the smooth ride except for the occasional bump or two. Well, maybe a bit more than that, but with my progressive springs, well, can't be too bad. So. Radio suddenly stops working. I think sad thoughts. Ready to start looking for blown fuse, torn wires, bad radio, other horrible options. Then. I see the whole radio insert thingie is sitting lopsided. Press it back in place and wallah everthing is fine. Had it not been for Condor getting us a good fork brace for a good price none of this would have ever happened! __________________

  15. There were way too many titles for this thread running through my head! "Watch That Front Brake!" "Here We Go Again!" "Love the Fork Brace, But...." And the always great: "Oh S#*T!" I put my new fork brace on, and to do so, I had to take my VR.o gremlin bell off. It is mounted in a hole in the end of my front axle. I forgot to put it back on, but I am now a believer!!! I put my new brace on and went for a ride. LOVED IT! It really tightened things up! I could just think of trying to scrape from side to side and it would do it. I tried braking in a turn and very little shake. And the shake that was there was....solid is the only word for it. I took the bike up to 55, set the cruise and hands free, I hit the right handle bar. It shook twice and that was it! Same on the left. I wasn't geared up so I didn't go out on the highway for a high speed test. After lunch with my sister, I was headed home, I ran through a neighborhood by mine with nice twisties (SleeperHawk, Mechanic, Swifty and Beer30 know where I'm talkin' about!). I ran thru there at 45/50mph! I usually run thru there at 35/40 and it felt better than 25/30! I decided to try braking in a left sweeper at about 50. I grabbed some front brake and it felt really solid............until the front wheel locked for a second. That's when the bike I was riding was magically ten feet in front of me sliding on it's side. I was, like "OK, it's all goo.....S#*T don't flip!!!..................D@&M!!".Well, at least it was the right side this time. I needed to replace the right mirror anyway. At this point I want to say...I'm OK, nothin' broken, just a little road rash. Left elbow, left calf and left "cheek" (I know, I know......."At least you're ok", but I'll heal, the bike will take money and work!) A friend of mine said "I know,.........you were riding in shorts and a T-shirt." I said "Hell NO!................I was riding in shorts,......and a Flowerdy Hawaiin shirt!!!" I still have the fairing brace from the last crash and I think I can cut it in half and trash the "crashed" parts, use the good halves and weld it back together. So, I guess I'm back in the plastic fixin' business! There are a couple of fairings on eBay that I'm gonna try for, if they go cheap enough. May be time for that repaint. I just need some real winter this year to stop riding it and paint!!! OK, it's time to swab my wounds in alcohol......I think I'll try some bourbon......from the inside! Anybody got an extra right side mirror? BTW: I've already been called "Skid" (we've got one of those!) and Crash (we've got one of those too!). And "RoadScab" aint gonna get it, Fly-N-lo!
  16. Ok I finally got time this evening to install my new Fork Brace. I got the black and I suppose it doesn't look bad. A little different, but I'm glad I went with the black, maybe just to be different. So far I haven't got to test it out yet. I only got a short ride in this evening and didn't get to try out the top end yet, but I will be soon. I'l proide an update later to see if my wobble is any better. (Thanks Condor)
  17. Well, I finally got my fork brace installed. As y'all wll remember my width between the tubes was about .005 - .007 too narrow. I got serious today and got all the weight off the front and loosened the axle. Then I loosend the lower triple tree pinch bolts all the way. I got a couple wood wedges between the tubes and the rim on each side. Tapped them in just slightly and watched the brace drop in!! Put in the bolts for the brace just snug. Tightened the axle bolt to 75 ft./lbs. I also tapped the tubes at the bas as I torqued the axle. Thinking the tubes might be like a u-joint youke. Tightened the pinch bolts and finally the brace. Test ride- cornering is now so much quicker I almost leaned into the fire hydrant on the corner! Tar snakes are just worms and tank slap is now a slight vibration. Time to check the head bearings. If the brace width is correct, then my forks were bowed in for some reason. I've seen bowed out but never in. Thanks for the bulk purchase. It was worth it. JB
  18. Ok folks, I need a bit of help. I purchased a set of floorboards from a member here. Nice transaction. They will be arriving next week. I have searched and cannot find instructions for mounting. Also, I remember seeing a set that had a cross brace under the motor. His set was on his bike when he bought it. No cross brace on the bike. They look to be Venture Line boards. I sure could use a set of instructions. I am sure the parts will only line up one way so I can figure it out. Just want to find things like bolt length to make sure parts are correct. Attached are pics of the boards I am getting and the boards I saw on e-bay with the bar/brace. Pictures marked Left and Right are the items I purchased. JB
  19. Firebirdames just pulled his bike out of the microwave defrost cycle up in Calgary, and found that he already has a brace on it, :doh:so... if someone else would like to pick up the one he ordered he'd be very greatfull. Anybody??? My hands are tied as the braces are back from the anodizer and ready to be shipped, and I just fired off the payment this morning.
  20. OK, I'm posting this in the 1stGen Tech section due to it being, like the MAC Mufflers, for 1stGens only. I've traded a few emails and phone calls with the Ebay seller who has been auctioning fork braces, I need to know how many 1stGeners would be interested in doing a group buy. Here's the deal. For an order of 20 his price will be $60ea., and for an order of 40 he'll drop it to $50 per. The shipping will be in bulk to me no-charge, and then forwarded to those of us who have raised their hands. Of course there will be individual shipping and paypal charges on top of the quoted price. I estimate the paypal at $2 bucks and the shipping could be as low as $6.50 Priority depending on weight, if it qualifies, or $8.95 Flat Rate if it doesn't. The manufacturer is checking the individual weight for me. He's been shipping Flat Rate off Ebay, but I'm thinking it may go cheaper regular priority?? My question is... Would this be something that enough of us would be interested in to qualify for the 20 or 40 price,?? And I'd need to know with in the next couple of days. I don't want to stick my neck out and pre-order 20....that's $1200 bucks..., and it fall flat. I noticed on the Super Brace web site that they have the same part number for all 1stGen's, so I assume this brace will fit all years too.... So....please let me know and if there is enough interest we'll start a group buy...
  21. This looks like an aftermarket fork brace. Not stock. Item number: 170135838976 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/yamaha-venture-royale-1200-fork-brace-chrome_W0QQitemZ170135838976QQihZ007QQcategoryZ10066QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
  22. Trust me, if you have a 2nd Gen, you DO have broken tabs on the inner fairing where the ends of the windshield bracket SHOULD be attached! Even if your bike is quite new, they are broken. Here is a picture of what the tabs should look like - I'm holding the broken back piece to show how it would look if it was actually there: I'm sure Yamahaha would replace the inner fairing under warranty for this, but frankly, I don't want them to rip my bike apart to do it when the new ones will just break in the first week anyway. The relatively easy solution is to make a brace that will run from the bottom screw on the speaker to the screw in the windshield bracket. When positioned correctly, this will clamp the windshield bracket against the tiny bit of the tab that remains and stop all motion. To start with, you will need a couple of metal straps - they cannot be too thick, but must be more sturdy than hardware tape. I found this bracket in the framing section of the hardware store and just cut the two pieces off: Put one end on the speaker screw and then cut the bracket to the exact length that will just fit under the top lip of the inner fairing. You will have to use a pair of pliers to twist and curve the strap to fit flush against the rubber grommet that holds the nut. The correct position for the windshield bracket is to have the metal piece behind the fairing tabs, and the front lip of the rubber grommet on the outside of the tab. Here are a couple of pictures of how it should be positioned: In other words, if the tab was still in one piece, it would slide over the groove in the rubber grommet on the outside of the metal windshield bracket. You will need to make sure the windshield bracket is properly positioned on the remaining piece of the tab before you can mark the correct position for the screw hole in the new brace. Here are pictures of the brace before I cut it to length, the finished brace before mounting, and then a couple of different shots of the brace all fastened in place. Once you have those new braces in place they work like clamps and everything is rock solid.
  23. First the superbrace would not fit on a 1990 model because the rubber fork boots I believe mount different than earlier models. I ended up machinning the brace to make it fit. Second if you look at the picture there is barely any thread engagement compared with the original brace. I cant believe people are riding around with such small thread engagement it cant be good. Im going to the store to get a longer set for safeties sake. Anybody else check how much the threads actually engage the forks?
  24. A couple of members have mentioned how a fork brace improves handling. They refer to the item as a Super Brace. I tried to get one but both bike shops I went to could only locate one for a Gold Wing. Can somebody give me the name of the manufacturer, supplier or any other details so I can order one locally? Many thanks
  25. i would like to SEE the difference, between a stock fork brace and a SUPERBRACE, if anyone has pictures of the two. i really don't know what mine is, other than that it fits an '86. any pics, will be greatly appreciated. just jt
