  1. Went to the Petsmart to purchase dog food and almost $hit. We have a 170-180 lb Newfoundland Dog. We have been feeding him Authority dog food and purchase a 40 lb bag about once a month. Tonight I walked in and walked out, then had to go back pay. The last bag I bought a month ago was 32.99 and today it was 45.99 not including the 13% taxes. Eukanuba was 75.99 (plus tax) for a 40 lb bag. I had to ask the lady at the desk how they can justify a (39.4%) increase. She smiled and continued to smile as she said Rice and corn have gone up (Not sure how much this inrease was) Transportation costs (Price a barrel is 1/3 the cost it was a year ago) Petcetara went backrupt (purchased by Petsmart) People are losing their jobs (Not sure how this has anything to do with the increase) and do not forget everything we purchase will be getting the new Ontario Harmony tax of 13% (which has always been part of purchasing dog food). I wanted to ask her to explain her answers but I just looked at her smiling face and knew I would be wasting my time. I feel sorry for the pets and the Humane Societies as people stop adopting pets. Or worse off people giveing them up, in tough times. Brad

  3. #yiv1520865051 v\:* { }#yiv1520865051 v\:* { }Subject: Dog and Cat owners-PLEASE READ VERY IMPORTANT!! Please tell every dog or cat owner you know. Even if you don't have a pet, please pass this to those who do. Over the weekend the doting owner of two young lab mixes purchased Cocoa Mulch from Target to use in their garden. They loved the way it smelled and it was advertised to keep cats away from their garden. Their dog Calypso decided that the mulch smelled good enough to eat and devoured a large helping. She vomited a few times which was typical when she eats something new but wasn't acting lethargic in any way. The next day, Mom woke up and took Calypso out for her morning walk. Half way through the walk, she had a seizure and died instantly. Although the mulch had NO warnings printed on the label, upon further investigation on the company's website, this product is HIGHLY toxic to dogs and cats. Cocoa Mulch is manufactured by Hershey's, and they claim that 'It is true that studies have shown that 50% of the dogs that eat Cocoa Mulch can suffer physical harm to a variety of degrees (depending on each individual dog). However, 98% of all dogs won't eat it.' The Snopes site gives the following information: http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/cocoamulch.asp Cocoa Mulch , which is sold by Home Depot, Foreman's Garden Supply and other Garden supply stores , contains a lethal ingredient called ' Theobromine'. It is lethal to dogs and cats. It smells like chocolate and it really attracts dogs. They will ingest this stuff and die. Several deaths already occurred in the last 2-3 weeks. Theobromine is in all chocolate, especially dark or baker's chocolate which is toxic to dogs. Cocoa bean shells contain potentially toxic quantities of the eobromine, a xanthine compound similar in effects to caffeine and theophylline. A dog that ingested a lethal quantity of garden mulch made from cacao bean shells developed severe convulsions and died 17 hours later. Analysis of the stomach contents and the ingested cacao bean shells revealed the presence of lethal amounts of theobromine. PLEASE GIVE THIS THE WIDEST DISTRIBUTION!!!
  4. Hi all, Well, it's been almost a year since we put down our dog Molly. http://farm1.static.flickr.com/38/79980546_c3a0b6305c.jpg She was a Weimaraner / Lab mix and was the best dog in the world. She lived to be 14 years old. It was the toughest thing in the world to take her on her "last ride" and we kinda decided to not have dogs anymore. Ruth has been watching the Weimaraner rescue site and found a dog that was pregnant with Weimaraner / Lab mix. We applied for one of the pups and after an application and a home interview we were selected to get one of these pups! They will be available at the end of January. We will get to see them at a meet and greet on January 18th in Lansing Michigan. Just wanted to share with you and show the pictures from their blog. 5. Thought this might interest some dog people and police officers This police dog is so fast, you have to watch this a few times to appreciate it. Go dog, go!! __________________ http://i35.tinypic.com/2nr08ck.gif
  6. No, no its not another motorcycle. It's Pebbles, she is boxer and pit bull mix. Fell in love with her. She sleeps next to our bed at night. She's too big and smelly to sleep on the bed. Hmmm...maybe Steve could sleep next to the bed too. Steve built a dog run for her and our Jack Russell. It didn't work out to well. Pebbles took her big head and used it like a hammer. She broke off a piece of the house that was holding the fence. Pebbles is more of an inside dog. Photo Gallery Link http://helmetspeakers.741.com/myimages/forums/100_1931.jpg

  10. I embarrased MamaMo yesterday. She took me to town and I tried to be good honest. We were in the checkout line at the pet store with a 10 lb bag of dog food. This ole lady wheels up behind us with a shopping cart full 150 lb of cat food. I lost it Meow Meow psst psst psst! She said what are you starring at? You remind me of my grandma do they call you cat lady? I thought I was being nice but MamaMo didn't see it that way. Back to the dog house for me.
  11. Today was not a very good day for our family. Our dog Lucy died suddenly. Lucy died early this morning, Ron and our son Mark sat with her in her last moments. They chose not to tell me, I was asleep. It is strange how a dog becomes such a part of your life. We had her for 12 years. She was such a beautiful dog, people would stop to comment on her when we were walking her, She used to catch ground moles, and one time she even caught a ground hog in our garage. I believe her great dream in life was to catch a squirrel, unfortunately she never got one. Lucy protected us all these years. We always knew when some stranger was in our driveway. And yet she was very gentle, I think she loved everyone. I thought I would share this with you all. I feel such a loss. We still have our dog Cooper. But the loss of Lucy is going to take a while to deal with. Our son and daughter are taking it hard. I just wanted to share this with you. DO not walk by your pet and not acknowledge their presence. Always make the effort to notice them. Their whole life is to get your love and appreciation. Remember them even when you are busy. I will miss Lucy for ever. She was a wonderful friend to us. 12. This saturday we went to Fayetteville NC to visit Jeff's Aunt and Grandmother. They were staying down there with his cousin Dean. He's in the army. We had a great time and got to meet Dean's new girlfriend, and his new dog. We also got to see his new toy. After his last return from Iraq he went out and got himself a bike. He bought a Harley. We told him we loved him anyway. Anyway I took a couple of pics of his new toy. So if your down in the area and you see a guy on this bike you'll know who he is. He has to go back to Iraq in June. I'm hoping to get him and his girlfriend to come to our annual year end/beginning meet on Jan 3rd. Here's the pics of his bike. Plus I threw in a pic of Jeff, Trisha, Dean and the dog (Shannon) and a pic of Jeff with his grandmother.
  13. The folks at St. Jude are very dissapointed that they cannot accomodate us on Sat the 18th for a tour, they have some new facilities they wanted us to see, they wanted me to find out if we could reschedule, but I think at this late date that would be difficult for most of us who have taken vacation time to make this ride, so unless I hear otherwise from the majority making the ride, wanting to reschedule we are still on for Sat. Oct. 18, 2008. We will meet with them in their visitors pavillion which is a very nice bldg and take pictures of the presentation to them and some group shots of the group and then off for a short ride down to Tunicia, Ms. for those that want to ride. I am getting very excited about this trip and looking forward to seeing everyone again and meeting some new members. If you are seeing this for the first time and are interested in going check out these two threads. St. Jude/Mean Dog Memorial.............. - VentureRider.Org Inked for St Judes - VentureRider.Org
  14. Here's a few pics of the car on the bike. I'm in one of the pics went for a short trip in it. Didn't really like the ride he said he has more to do, so I told him he should have waited to take me for a ride. Anyway the first dog in the car is our youngest Bernie she didn't want to stay in the car and jumped out. The other dog is our old girl and she went for a really short trip out one driveway and in the other. But she seems to have liked it. Hope he gets it all fixed maybe I'll give it another try then. Margaret
  15. Last Friday eve flew from MN-ST.Paul Airport to Traverse City, MI and sitting next to me is the 2007 & 2008 Alaska Dog Sled Champion ((Ididerod)-spelling?) Mr. LANCE MACKI. The Discovery Channel who has done the "Deadlist Catch" in Alaska will be releasing his World Class Performance this OCT. A must see. This guy has beaten all Challenagers World Wide. For those who has followed Dog Sled Racing the "Macki Family" is like Lance Armstrong and the Tour De-France. I WAS GEEEEEEEKED. Oh not to mention The Minnesota Wild Hockey Farm Team was on the plane too and the Coach is Brett Hull Retired NHL All-Star. Spent the entire plane ride talking to Lance Macki and his wife. Did I mention I was GGGGGEEEEEEEEEECCCCCCCKKKKKKEEEDD? Oh and just purchased a 2008 RSV Black Cherry 2 days ago. I'm, so excited I have to go pee so I better hit "POST" now...

  20. Well, Got done buyin' me some new tires and a feller on a new Big Dog pulls up as I am mounting my ride. We exchange pleasantries, I light the scoot and head out the parking lot. The exit from the parkinglot is steep uphill to a stop sign with an imediate down to the street curb. As I come to a stop, front wheel one side of the hump, rear on the other, my left foot catches the pavemnent and down we go. I have to say, I made a very graceful roll backwards as I gently let her down on the guards. Had to look and see if anyone had seen and noticed the feller on the Big Dog was walking my way with a big grin on his face. My pride being abit bruised, I recalled the "Stand-up" strategy described on this forum, and before he could get to me, I had the old girl back on her tires. Blushed a little and thanked the Big Dog feller for coming to my aide, fired her up and made a little noise leaving. DJ
  21. Ok folks - now for something completely different. The City of Buda, Texas Lions Club hosts an event every spring. It is the WEINER DOG RACES!! That's right, two days of dachsund racing and other fun stuff. The festivities are on April the 26th and 27th this year. The "Run for the Roses" is on Sunday afternoon. Anybody up for an afternoon of "hot" dog racing? This is like the 13th annual race. We will be going up on Sunday just to have fun. JB
  22. for all of you smart people, here's a question. will a gremlin bell work in my shop? it seems that some of them lil suckers , fell out of my bell, and took up residence in my shop!!!! tools get moved around, parts get lost or mis-placed, "stuff" winds up on the floor, and under work benches! i know that it isn't MY doing, and my old German shepherd dog, swears HE didn't do it, so it must be gremlins! i wonder if a COW bell, would be big enough to catch them all? lol just jt
  23. Taken on a weekend trip to Deals Gap and the Cherahala Skyway. Wife and her true love, The dog. Roads were wet but not slick.
  24. I would like to buy a used pet carrier, maybe a Road Hound for a 18 LB dog, a terrier type.
  25. Well Folks I have been talking with Nancy about the purchasing of a set of training wheels for our bike! Due to my loss of strength from Chemo treatments and also in consideration of Squidley's accident while visiting here, I feel it would be a good investment. I spoke with Frog Man on the phone last night to get his imput on the Voyager Kit (Thank You) and I believe that is the way I will go. It seems a little expensive for what you get but what isn't for our favorite sport! I can always remove it if I get to ever feeling better. I would love to make more rides and and meets this year and I believe this would make that possible. I know it would ease Nancy's mind as she is afraid I will be out and drop the bike! I don't suppose I will be able to purchase a used one anywhere so we will have to bite the bullet and get new! Just don't laugh when you see the Dog coming........... Mark
