  1. Rode to work this morning for the first time since my accident on fathers day. The shoulder and ribs havn't felt too good until the last few days. Since I had to put the 4Runner in the shop I figured this was as good a day as any. It felt great. Still need to do a few cosmetic repairs and the bike is back to almost like new. Yeehaw!
  2. I leave mine on reserve. I do not ignore the low fuel light or the fuel gauge. The reason I like to be on reserve is that sometimes I need to get out of someones way by gassing it. If the petcock is on, on and you run out of fuel the engine will starve for fuel and the bike will loose power. Wouldn't want that to happen at an inopportune time.
  3. As long as we are on the passing light subject. Anyone know where I can get the ring that holds the light in the passing light bucket? After my little, ahem, "misshap" I have a crack in my left passing light ring. Harley sells a set of rings for $21.00 that might fit and JCW has a passing light for $25.00 that might fit. But before I throw down money it would be nice to know the items would fit.
  4. Went by the other Harley dealership at noon. They had another one of those CVO Ultra Classic's. This one was $39,500. Do you think if I walked into another HD dealership it would be $45,000. These dealers don't wiggle much on their asking price. $400 is all they would come of of an '08 Ultra Classic. I guess if they sell all that they get in they don't have to come off much. The SE model was sweet though, metalic white and metalic orange. Very striking.
  5. Don't know what he is referring to but back in the day when I drove a few nonsyncromesh transmissions you needed to let the clutch out in order to get under way, then pull the clutch in and click out of gear, let the clutch back out and blip the throttle to match up the engine RPM's to the transmission speed, pull the clutch back in and then put it in the next higher gear then let the clutch back out. A very slow way to drag race. Better to put it in gear crank it wide open , or as wide as the rev limiter will alow. Then use the clutch slippage rather than the throttle to control acceleration. Don't bother to clutch again once the clutch is fully engaged. Just back off the throttle a bit as you kick up each gear. Hard on the clutch and transmission but do-able. On our old MX bikes we started in 2nd gear using this method. Not sure how quick starting in 2nd on the RSV would be. Big difference in a 225lb YZ 250D and this 900lb beast we ride.
  6. Well I'm not likely to spend the money on the "Plain Jane" Ultra. Although, it comes with almost everything on it that I would want plus an almost endless supply of chrome from Harley and the aftermarket. Nice stereo, CB, intercom, air deflectors, and driving lights. Don't think I would add anything but perhaps the drivers back rest.
  7. Not really on subject, but. Just took part of my lunch hour to walk around the Harley dealer they had a white pearl Ultra Classic with the Screamin Eagle up grade. $35,000 . Yikes. Made the blue Ultra classic look like a bargan at $22,000. Maybe thats why the Screamin' Eagle version was parked by the door. So that every thing else seemed like a bargan.
  8. I know a lot of us purchase bikes and trailers out of our home state. There was an article in the paper about a week ago in which an avid camper purchased a camper trailer in Wisconson directly from the manufacturer in order to save some money. He drove up and picked his trailer and paid local, Wisconson, sales tax, 5.5% I believe it was. When he got home and tried to register the trailer he was told by the Arkansas department of finance and administration that he would have to pay Arkansas sales tax as well. In Arkansas sales tax, on vehicles/trailer, is collected when you first apply for tags. Check where you live and make sure that you won't have to pay double sales tax. The tax might negate any savings you have made by purchasing out of state.
  9. As far as color match. I found that various parts of my MM don't actually match. The trunk didn't really match the tank from the factory. And the fenders are a little different as well. Not much but a little.
  10. Most likely no problem. They only come on when the engine is hot. Its July, it hot, so my guess its on because of that or it was ridden slowly for a while, or sat and idled for a while. If you go out tomorrow and the fan comes on immediatly you need to have it checked. Otherwise I wouldn't worry about it.
  11. I never remove the saddle bag. I found a pump at Walmart that fits on the top of a gear oil bottle. Just remove the drain plug from below and then clean off the drain plug. Put the drain plug back in. Remove the fill plug, put the tube from the pump in the fill hole and pump until a slight amount drains out of the fill hole. Then replace the plug and wipe everything down and go for a ride.
  12. Moble 1 20w-50 is not "energy conserving".
  13. Don't plan on having the DVR in an obvious place. One thing about burgulars they want in and out fast. The longer they are in your home the more likely they will be caught.
  14. Good suggestions. But....I have to be at work all day and any gun is useless 10 miles away. All the gun offers is something else to steal and pawn. Been there. Dogs must must be kept behind a fence. And my observation is these dogs have a dendancy to escape. Then I would have the responsibility and liability of a pitbull, or the like, chewing someone up. Dangerous dogs, what ever that is, have to be registered in town as well. I don't seriously think I can keep someone out if they want in, but if I have a picture of the perp then I can hand it over to the police. Besides that I don't really want to kill someone over a tv. I'd like to beat the snot out of a theif but not kill him. However, if someone broke and entered while I or my family are at home, they are dead.
  15. It's unbelieve able how many breakins there have been around here. Every day, in the middle of the day. Home security systems don't do much good. It takes a minute for the alarm to go off, another minute for the security company to call you and maybe 5 minutes for the police to get to your house. Thats plenty of time for the thieves to get in and get out with your computer, tv etc. With a camera and recording system maybe at least a person would have a face to put with the bums. Recomendations?
  16. Tires. If the whine gets worse when going around a corner.
  17. I've been using automotive Mobil 1 15w-50 (non-energy conserving) in my 2000MM since for nearly 8 years. I have had not had any problems what-so-ever. No clutch slippage nothing. By the same token I still have a whine/chirp that is unaffected by either synthetic or dino oil. The final drive was replaced at 9000 miles under warranty, boy did that quieten things down. I re-broke in the final drive, changed gear oil at I think it was 600 miles, or what ever the manual said, ran another 3000 miles with dino gear oil then switched to royal purple synthetic for the final drive. The engine ticks a little when first fired up then quietens up, normal I think. For what its worth.
  18. Thanks for the comments. I'm back at work today, moving a little slow but I'm sure I will heal up and the bike is easily fixable. Best think is my daughter didn't get hurt. She's been really sweet by saving me trips to the refrigerator. My wife, the best, has been really sweet too I think she's just waiting until I'm well so she can kill me.
  19. Its not if you have an accident but when. After 38 years of riding without an accident I lost control on a slow left hander dragging the boards then the crash bars and saddlebag rails. I thought I could save it right up until we went off onto the shoulder of the road and down we went. My daughter was totally uninjured she just popped up on her feet. Unfortunately I fractured my left clavical and a rib. The rib is much more painful than the collarbone. I can't do squat. The bike only has cosmetic stuff. Although I may have trouble finding plastic for my MM model. Oh well live and hopefully learn.
  20. The socket part of the shoulder is sort of shaped like a pear that has been split down from the stem to the base and then hollowed out slightly. The ball part of the upper arm rests in this shallow socket. The two bones, shoulder blade and arm are attached by a joint capsule that encloses the ball and socket. This capsule attaches to a cartelage "like" fibrous ring that is grown to and part of the boney socket. This "Labrum", or meaning lips purpose is to deepen and yet provide a flexible shock absorbing surface for the ball to fit and move in. This is a very elegant design that gives an amazing amount of mobility and still is relatively stable. When you tear the labrum, part of this lip is pulled away from the bone. The tears can be small, or large enough to allow the shoulder to dislocate. Sometimes tendons themselves are pulled away from the bone taking a little plug of bone with it or fractures of the boney rim its self can occur. In a couple of weeks the tissue should knit together but it may take a full year for the injured tissue to gain full strength. So falling off of the bike or any other fall could re-tear the labrum. Its important to do the exercises as soon as the surgeon allows. Other wise he could end up with a frozen shoulder. By the way how did Dale injure his shoulder in the first place? Look here for more info: http://www.shoulder1.com/forum/categories.cfm?catid=64 or here if you want to see what physical therapist think: http://physicaltherapy.rehabedge.com/ Dale is going to have lots of time to surf, so he can learn all about it. Good luck, and God bless.
  21. On going back to work. Neither employers no insurance companies like for physicians to take patients off of work. The reason is, is that there are so many goldbricks out there. Now hear this I am not calling anyone a goldbrick. People do become legitimately disabled. But in the past many people ended up being disabled because of psychosocial reasons rather than because of the original musculoskeletal injury. It is well documented in occupational medicine journals, that if a person is off of work for six months or more there is only a 10% chance they will ever go back to work. Conversly, keep a person going to work even if it is to clock in then back out greatly increases the chance of return to work. There are many psychosocial reasons why staying at home decreases the likely hood of returing to work and I wont go into them here. Trust me all of this is true.
  22. Havn't had a rotator cuff surgery but worked with quite a few. Had a SLAP and bony Bankhart repair last September. I was on my bike by November. That said I'm only just now feeling like the shoulder is getting strong enough for me to depend on it. I still have lots of cracking and popping, but the shoulder is pretty strong. He'll find that sleeping in a recliner is most comfortable. Or pileing up pillows to get him into a semi reclining postion with pillows supporting his arm. Most likely he will be in a funny sling with a wedge pillow between his arm and trunk with a strap that goes around his waist. Sleeping is absolutly the worst. I would do great during the day but wake up every couple of hours. I didn't really get a good nights sleep until some time in December. I will still wake up with some achyness in the night but not too bad. No matter how it hurts he will get the best result if he starts his range of motion as soon as the doctors allows and pushes up to the maximum that the doctor allows. That is if the doctor says no more than 90 degrees then he should bite the bullet and go to 90 degrees. No more and no less. Take a pain pill 30 minutes prior to exercising. God bless him I feel his pain.
  23. No havn't had a chance to watch it. Never the less, reguardless of wether or not the supply or price is manipulated or by whom it is manipulated or why it is manipulated. If there is zero demand for oil for any purpose. The value of oil will be zero. That's basic supply and demand economics. Since I drive a suv that gets 15 mpg and a motorcycle that gets 40 mpg. I know that I save fuel costs each and every time I ride to work. I can assure you the demand will drop if all of us decrease our usage. As a result the price will drop because the speculators will drop oil like a hot potato. Poking holes in the ground and pumping oil is not a quick fix because it will be years before the oil reaches the consumer. In the meantime we can all decrease our usage. Like I wrote before "Ride to work". Besides that the Lord is going to return before we run out of oil. There you go religion, economics, and politics.
  24. Saw Chuck Norris on Fox News touting this. So I though that if Chuck said to do it I had better. Really, as long as people drive above the speed limit in their suv's this poblem will not get much better. Drop the demand and wether the supply goes up, down or stays the same the price will go down. Ride to work!
