I installed a swivel hitch on my trailer and wouldn't even consider towing without one. The added safety is worth the small investment. Last summer I caught a curb when turning into a parking lot and the loaded bike went completely down. Other than scuffing one of the rear crash bars and suffering some embarrasment there was absolutely no damage. Neither I or any of my touring friends all of whom pull campers larger than mine would consider pulling a trailer without a swivel hitch. Get one!!

Baker Air Wings
Burninator replied to CrazyHorse's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I have the upper and mid ones on my Venture. I have dropped the bike but not damaged the Air Wings. Unless I have a passenger I usually leave the mid ones off as they prevent me from using my cruising pegs. I found that the round knobs some times loosen and have dropped an Air Wing on the road. I went to the hardware store and got knobs that were not round and can be tightened securely without much effort. They were an improvement and I haven't dropped a wing since. -
Radiator Cap Replacement
Burninator replied to ficklefinn's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
When I picked up my 86 Venture Royale from the dealer, he said I needed a new rad cap. He simply took one off a 2nd Generation Venture that was sitting in the show room and installed it without charging me. Needless to say I have a real treasure in my local dealer. When I bought the Venture as is I discovered that it needed an alternator rebuild. The dealer had the part gathering dust in stock and installed it charging me only for the labour. Needless to say he gets all of my business. -
Baker Air Wings
Burninator replied to CrazyHorse's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I have both uppers and lowers on my 86 Venture. I have dropped the bike and broken the plastic screws on one of the brackets but easily found replacements. I put them on to give my passenger more wind protection. Also, when it is hot it is nice to turn them to catch the wind and direct them onto my legs. The disadvantage I found was that the lower set prevented me from using my cruising pegs so I often leave them off. I also added a Laminar Lip to the very top of the windshield. I am short enough to look under it so it isn't too annoying. It pushes the wind up high enough to give my passenger a better ride. -
Air Filter Question:
Burninator replied to Russ's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I had the same problem. I checked the diaphragms on the four carbs and they had many many holes in them. The result was that when I openned the throttle, the vacuum was not capable of moving the needles on the sliders so the engine was starving for fuel. I replaced the sliders and diaphragms and restored the performance. The difference was startling. Check your diaphragms for holes. -
Air suspension question
Burninator replied to Burninator's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Thanks to everyone for the excellent suggestions. I should be able to diagnose my problem now and determine what needs to be done to fix it. -
I adjusted the air suspension front and rear on my 86 Venture Royale to High on Saturday. It seemed to ride as expected. On Sunday morning before riding I put the bike up on the centre stand and checked the pushed the buttons for high load front and rear. The front took a fraction of a PSI but the rear took a lot. I don't think that is normal. If the shocks don't hold the air pressure over night what is the most likely cause? Any input will be appreciated.

I bought a camper and it came without a swivel hitch. I ordered and installed the swivel hitch before towing the trailer. On my first trip I didn't make a wide enough turn when entering a parking lot and the right trailer wheel caught the curb pulling the 86 Venture down quite hard. The swivel hitched worked as intended and neither the bike or camper suffered any damage. I like the piece of mind that comes from eliminating potential damage when a regular hitch is used. Spend the extra money and protect your investment. You will sleep better at night.

Bake icon on display problem
Burninator replied to Burninator's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Thanks for the feedback. The pads were checked by the dealer and were in good shape. Perhaps they didn't check the reservoir below the seat. I will take a look at it. The level there may not have been checked and may be low. I will let you know what I find. -
I have had my 86 Venture Royale checked over by the dealer and no safety problems have been found but the icon on my display indicating low brake fluid is either on solid or flashing most of the time. Is it really caused by low brake fluid? If so, how much fluid should I have in the reservoir? Perhaps there is a level sensor problem. Has anyone else experienced the same thing? If so how did you resolve the problem. The light is quite annoying at night.

I broke the right mirror off my 86 Venture and successfully re-attached it with epoxy cement. I had to be very careful to get it in the correct position and taped it there before cementing it in place. I worked very well. The mirror can't be adjusted but is in the perfect position and rock steady. My left mirror on the other hand keeps moving with the wind pressure. I may put a dab of epoxy or crazy glue on it too.

No top end
Burninator replied to Burninator's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I took out the diaphragms and they looked like swiss cheese. That accounts for the lack of top end power. I have a set on order for $61 each and am looking forward to seeing the difference it makes. My 86 just couldn't get enough gas to go much over 90 mph.- 8 replies

Carb diaphragm
Burninator replied to Condor's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The mechanic at my local bike dealer told me that epoxy works really well. -
My 86 Venture Royale has been tuned up and the dealer balanced the carbs. It seems to accelerate very well but dies off quickly as it approaches 90 mph. The maximum speed is about 95 mph. I ran cleaner through the engine which improved the acceleration but still no top end. Can defective carburetor diaphragms allow the bike to run smoothly, accelerate well but have no top end? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

What happens when the diaphragms go ont the 1300 motor? Does it limit the amount of fuel that can be delivered to the cylinders? If so that may account for my very low top speetd. Is it difficult to access the diaphragms to check or replace them?

If you want to find out how accurate your speedometer is borrow a GPS and take it for a ride. Compare the GPS speed with your speedometer reading. My GPS shows that my 86 Venture Royale has an error of less than 1 mph at 60. My 2000 Yamaha 1100 Classic has an error of 3 mph at 60 and my friend's Yamaha 400 Majesty has an error of 7 mph at 60.

My 86 Venture Royale will not go much above 5500 to 6000 rpm in 4th and 5th gear. It seems to hit a wall and won't go any faster. Can anyone suggest what the cause is and how to fix it. Is it a timing problem or weak valve springs causing the valves to float at high rpm? Otherwise the motor starts right away, runs very smoothly. I am probably not getting the acceleration that I should at the lower range but as this is my first Venture I have nothing to compare it with. At this time, my V-Star 1100 Classic has far more top end. Help!!

When I start the Venture and switch on the cruise control for the first time it always works flawlessly. If I then cancel it and try to resume speed it works sometimes and not every time. If I switch off the cruise control and turn it back on again it usually won't set. Is there anything that I can do to make it work more consistently?
