  1. When I took my 86 VR to the shop for some work I told the mechanic that the battery light would be on because I installed a new battery and that I would fix it when I got it back home. When I picked up the bike the mechanic had wired the battery sensor to the positive battery post. Needless to say the battery light was off. I told him that could damage the electronics and he disconnected the sensor from the battery. Everything seems to work correctly. How can I tell if the chip has been damaged. Will the light stay on or will other things quit working?
  2. I installed a new high output battery and have no more problems starting my 86 VR. I won't bother changing the cables.
  3. I need a set of mufflers for my 86 Venture Royale. The Yamaha mufflers are very expensive. Where can I buy suitable after market mufflers. I am in Canada with an 82 cent dollar and would like to find a lower cost alternative to the Yamaha hardware.
  4. I installed a new sealed battery. It has no connection for the small wire was connected to the original battery. As result a battery icon shows up on the display. I assume there is nothing to worry about and just ingnore the icon. Any comments?
  5. I have a custom trailer being assembled to enable me to transport my Venture from the frozen north in winter to Florida so I can ride it in the winter. What is the proper method of tying the bike down to the trailer. What should I attach the tie downs to on the bike. If you have any photos of a venture on a trailer showing how it is tied down that would be helpful too.
  6. What is the most powerful battery that I can purchase for my 86 Venture Royale?
  7. Does anyone have recommendations for a battery for my 86 Venture Royale?
  8. I would like to find some way to locate my trunk a couple of inches farther back. Then I will be able to leave my driver's back rest on when I take passengers who are not skinney. Can anyone suggest how to do this? Is there a relocation kit available?
  9. I was using the Dunlop Elite 3 on the rear and ordered an Elite 3 for the front to use when the Elite 2 wears out. After 6 months the order had not been filled. Apparently the Dulop Elite 2 is no longer being made and the Elite 3 is not available. I cancelled my order. My question is what is the next best tires for my 86 Venture? Should I order Metzlers or something else?
  10. My 86 Royale will hold the air pressure forever as long as I don't switch the key off accessories. As soon as I switch it off and back on again the pressure is gone. If there were any leaks I should see it drop but the pressure is maintained as long as I don't swith the key off. Can anyone offer an explanation? I am tempted to install manual valves on the lines that I can swith to the closed position after pumping the air into the suspension. It is the only problem that I have that prevents me from a complete restoration of my beloved bike. Chris
  11. I need recommendation for a good contact cleaner for the large connector going to my 86 venture solenoids. I traced air suspension problems to the connector, tried a head cleaner that seemed to work but the problem came back. I don't think the cleaner did a good enough cleaning job. Does anyone know of a good way to clean those pesky contacts in the connector?
  12. I purchased a solid state relay/isolator that converts 5 pin to 4 pin. I got it from a company that sells on Ebay. It cost me $24 plus shipping. Today I finished wiring and testing it. It works great and fits nicely under the seat on my 86 Venture. Now I am wating impatiently for the snow to disappear so I can hook up my camper trailer and take it for a test drive. Thanks to everyone for the helpful advice.
  13. The hitch turned out to be the right one after all. I have it secured in place and am currently installing the relay/isolator/converter.
  14. I would like to move the trunk on my 86 Venture Royale back to give my passenger a little more room. That will allow me to ride two up with my back rest installed. Where can I get the relocation brackets.
  15. When you use the tube to listen to each carb where do you put the end of the tube? Do you take off the air filter and insert the tube at the top?
  16. Has anyone purchased one of the bike haulers that mounts in the receiver of a car or truck trailer hitch and secures the front wheel allowing the rear wheel to ride on the road? If so, what has been your experience?
  17. I purchased a hitch from Denray. They said I should install a Denray hitch part number 71 on my 86 Venture Royal. After it arrived I held it up under the back of the bike to size up the installation. It doesn't look wide enough to attach to the saddle bag supports. I may be wrong but will know soon as I am in the process of removing a failed hitch. Has anyone else installed a Denray hitch on the 86 version of the Venture Royal? If so what was the part number of the hitch. Perhaps Denray accidentally packed the wrong hitch.
  18. I have the same problem with my 86 Venture.
  19. I have a V-Star with a heel-tow shifter and I really like it. Is there a standard heel/toe shifter available for the 86 Venture?
  20. Thanks for the wiring description. I am going to look for an appropriate relay/isolator to provide trailer power directly from the battery and avoid the extra load on the bike wiring. Where is a good place to locate the device?
  21. What wires need to be connected to what to convert my 86 Venture to a 4 wire system for my camper trailer?
  22. I purchased a swivel hitch of similar design last spring and installed it on my camper trailer then pulled it for 17 days with no problems. I too had to shave the nylon block but did so with a hack saw. Drilling presented no problems.
  23. Besides my 86 Venture Royale I also have other bikes. One is a 2000 V-Star 1100 Classis outfitted for touring. I used it before acquiring my Venture for some good trips of 2,000 miles or so. To accommodate all of my camping gear, clothing etc. for myself and my passenger I purchase an Eaglemate Trailer (see it at www.eaglematetrailers.com) It weighs 80 lb. and will haul 275 pounds. It attaches to the drivers back rest bolts. Once under way you don't know it is there accept for the lower acceleration and extra braking required. It performed flawlessly at all speeds and even seemed to stabilize the bike when under way. After I got my 86 Venture Royale I picked up a camper trailer and use it for more comfortable touring. The Eaglemate trailer has been gathering dust for a year.
  24. I appreciate the help that I have been getting from other members and wanst to update you on my leveling unit diagnosis. I put power directly to each of the three solenoids and found that they function normally. The fact that the two solenoids for the front and back suspension don't open at the command from the controller tells me that I have an electrical problem. My next step will be to follow the procedure in the service manual for testing the controller and wiring. That should pin down the culprit. My conclusion is that the air has never gotten past the solenoid manifold to the shocks so I have never been putting air into them as required. I'll keep you posted.
  25. When I put my 86 Royale on the centre stand and set the front and rear to low, medium or high the compressor pumps the pressure to the correct P.S.I and will hold it without loosing any air. As soon as I switch the key to any other position and back to check the pressure both fron and rear are at zero p.s.i. There is no error message on the display. Is the most likely reason for the sudden loss of air pressure when the keyk is switched off due to a bad solenoid? I have a friend with a spare and we are going to swap them to see what happens. I think that the ability to hold the pressure indefinitely with the key in the accessory position means that there are no plumbing or seal leaks. I hope that it is a solenoid as that will be an easy fix. Has anyone out there had a similar experience?
