  1. I know a couple people that went thru it but it is hard to imagine that many curves in such a short span. Video isn't the same as doing it but gives a good idea I'm sure ! People from work have talked about riding down (one suggested trailering down the bikes just to ride it - not for me, would rather ride) but haven't been able to fit it in yet.

  3. I don't mind letting other bikes past me if I'm just cruising and they want to get by but there is no open lane for them to pass. I'll pull to the right track and wave them by to my left - sharing the lane. I have had sport bikes come zipping past on the right in my lane without invitation. Saw them coming but wasn't too happy when they took the position. Was a no passing zone on a two lane road. I wasn't exactly going slow either !
  4. Came across a 13pin din (Kenwood) to ipod cable online but don't know if Kenwood and Clarion are the same pin outs. For those that have split the fairing on a 2nd gen... what type of connector is at the control unit? Is it a male or female 13 pin connection?

  6. Question is what does the "new" Venture have that people don't want or what is missing ? When comparing bike-to-bike the RSV still comes out ahead. Why change it? Biggest complaints : 1) cassette deck - true it is obsolete but what would you put in its place? More gauges? In my opinion the bike doesn't really need more. Some like having the extra lights and gauges but bottom line is it doesn't really need them in order to ride the bike 2) fuel injection - if the bike meets current emission standards does fuel injection really make a substantial improvement to the bike? 3) gear whine - my other bike is a 99 Virago 1100 and maybe I'm used to the whine but I don't notice an issue on the 09 RSV. How many people have had mechanical issues with the shaft drive? For me, I'd take shaft drive over belt for the low maintenance and smoothness Missing : 1) I'd like a gps on mine but where would they put it, plus a gps is a personal choice on features, look, operation. Easier to have a removeable unit for loading upgrades and maps. For this, leave the choice on a removeable unit up to the customer 2) bluetooth - wireless intercom would be nice. Don't think GW or HD offer that yet either 3) heated grips, seat, etc.... easily fixed with good clothing 4) ABS or UBS (unified braking system) - always good to make a bike slow down faster Pro's for keeping it the way it is : 1) 4cyl 1300cc motor - enough horsepower and torque the way it is. Sure, not as big as the GW but I like 50mpg Imperial and still accellerates fast enough. Remember, this is a touring bike, not a sport bike. I'm not against bigger motors. My car is a Mustang GT. I could have gotten the 6cyl but opted for the 8 because the Mustang is a sports car and should go fast. RSV is for 2 up riding and how many passengers want you to be able to do wheelies? 2) riding position and comfort - I bought my RSV partly because the seating position is right for me. Passenger seat is comfortable and how don't hear complaints from the back when I'm on rough roads or hit a pot hole. Don't change it. 3) shaft drive - low maintenance, smooth. Fix the way the gears mesh but keep the shaft 4) the "look" - the RSV turns heads the way it is. I pull into a parking lot where there are HD's and they turn their head and go "nice looking bike" or "wow, its a Venture". So, if you were Yamaha, what would you do when you have a bike like the RSV ? Major changes could push customers away, raise the MSRP, increase tooling and R&D costs. A few minor tweaks would be nice, but if they made major changes and missed the mark (too much like a HD or GW, etc) there would be more complaints.
  7. Better start stocking up on cassettes !!!! They will be making a come back in a big way next year ! When people see that Yamaha still puts a player in their tourer... Wonder if Yamaha would buy the ones that have been taken out of existing Ventures?

This was announced at 11am this morning : ------------ Investigators have revealed the name of a woman who was killed after she fell off the back of a motorcycle last weekend as they continue to probe the circumstances of her death. Ioana Bocunescu apparently fell off the back of the bike around 11:30pm Fri., Aug. 27 on the westbound 401 in Whitby. Durham police had been following the motorbike and tried to pull it over when the driver reportedly immediately accelerated, throwing the passenger onto the highway at Lake Ridge Road South. Bocunescu’s body was found on the highway and authorities said she was hit by several vehicles. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Six investigators from the SIU are assigned to the case. The unit investigates incidents involving police and civilians that result in serious injury or death.

  13. Was just thinking if I got left and right channel pin outs for the connector in the side bag I might be able to build a connector. Was wondering if anyone had done this yet. As for removing the cassette deck... never know when you might need it ! LOL I don't want to rig the ipod on the handle bars and thought putting it in the side bag would give some protection should I hit rain. I now a good gps with mp3 player is the way to go but bike friendly gps' are a little down the road for me. I'll see if I can get a pin out for the c-bus and maybe give it a shot. Depends on whether or not the audio system will be tricked into thinking there is a usable device and display it as an input option.

Not planning on spending $600+ on the cd changer from Yamaha but was thinking that rather than mounting my ipod on the handlebars and clutter things up, couldn't I put the iPod in the side luggage (where it will stay dry) and connect the audio out from the iPod to the pin connector for the cd ? Anyone try this ? I have a 2009 RSV. In the left side luggage is a cable which I believe is for a cd connection.

  17. Sorry but I see this as the wrong tactic. If you take the right track the car will pass you but be in YOUR lane. Puts you into an even more dangerous position. Always own your lane. This doesn't always work though. Once on a two lane road I was in the left track of the roadway and a car passed me on the shoulder. He got the finger immediately !
  18. Just received the TLCproducts bags (full set). Haven't had a chance to use them yet but ordered on the 15th, received on the 27th.... and this is across the border. I had sent an email last week asking when I should expect delivery and instead of emailing back they called me. Good customer service/follow up !
  19. Pretty sure the motorcycle handbook published by the Ontario government (prep for taking the M1 test - graduated licensing) recommends speeding up to get a comfortable gap. I don't agree with this because the reason the person is close behind you is because they want to travel faster than you are going. Natural response is for the car to speed up. If I have open road in front of me I'll accellerate and leave them behind. Obviously if I have a lane open beside me I'll move over. On a two lane road with traffic in front I'll gradually slow down and hold them up... and give them the bird if they continue to crowd me or if they pass. Turning onto a side street or into a driveway isn't the best option because they could clip you as you slow down to turn. If they aren't giving you room going straight they aren't going to give you a comfort zone to turn. The other instance I don't like is where cars pull up beside and pace you when there are two lanes going in the same direction. I like having the room to avoid or escape if something comes up.... I'll either speed up and make sure they know I'm there or back off if there is a comfort zone behind me.
  20. I'm with you. I'm about 200lbs, girlfriend about 150. I always get on first, (connect head set), stand the bike up, raise the sidestand, start the motor (cluch in). I make sure both hands are on the grips, both feet solid (boots with non-slip soles) and give the girlfriend a nod to get on. I wait until she is settled in (head set plugged in) and lets me know she is ready. If I have to back up the bike out of a parking spot, passenger floorboards are up, engine off, sidestand up, with me siting on he bike. Once I'm ready to go (with bike pointed in the direction I want to to - no sense having to do a sharp slow turn and take the chance !) I'll lower the passenger floorboards, hands on the grips, feet planted... From this... - get your wife into a certain rythm of knowing when to get on the bike and not to make sudden moves at slow speeds - wear boots/shoes with non-slip soles. Sneakers won't do it ! - when making slow turns, look to where you want to go. Like doing curves, best to look further down the road. Looking 3' in front of the bike will make you more unstable than looking 10' ahead.

  22. Both bikes are good and you won't make a mistake with either one. True the RSV hasn't been updated in a generation (okay, 11 years), but it is bullet proof. When I did my test riding I did the technical comparison but also decided by the seat of my pants. Tried the Harley, Gold Wing, RSV... and seating position, handle bar position, even the foot boards were more comfortable on the RSV for me. Its got to be what you are most comfortable riding, what you feel confident with. LOL - and yes... your riding partner has to agree too !
  23. I agree with Don. I used to be a member on some satellite forums that had advertising which paid to support the site. $12 a year is a bargain. I was a visitor to these forums for a year before I bought my RSV. During that time I used the forums to confirm that the RSV was the way to go. LOL - Yamaha should be a supporter for the number of sales they probably make because of the forums and info ! As soon as I bought my bike I became a paying supporter. Don - I for one appreciate the efforts you make to keep this site going and wish you all the best with your health !
  24. Issue isn't just with U.S. dealers. See my issue with a used (4 month old) 2009 that I bought a month ago. Yamaha Canada has said that it is up to the original dealer to resolve and that they won't step up to bat. The chrome piece in front of the windscreen has the broken tabs, assembly of other things was done incorrectly (including the afformentioned wrong placement of the antennas). My local dealer has said that it was assembled incorrectly and it isn't a warranty issue so they won't fix it. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=51728 Don't think it is an issue with inexperienced techs assembling the bike. Yamaha doesn't sell enough of the bikes for the tech's to know what they are doing. The shop I normally deal with probably has one tech in the shop that assembles Venture's. The other techs probably haven't done one yet.
