  1. I picked up that bearing yesterday at Kaman bearing in town. I also ordered a cut gasket in SL - I'll pick it up today. I also ordered the big clutch basket bearing from Leighton cycle and they're shipping it to me. Even though no one mentions replacing that one and it's an extra $50, I'm going to spend the extra 10 minutes to replace that one while I'm in there. Saturday's the day to do the fixin. since I got back, I've fixed my wife's van (new battery & fixed battery cable), the kitchen faucet (real bad leak), and a couple of other things that broke around the house (vacuum, pressure cooker, etc..). Like usual, I spent another vacation day yesterday just fixing broken things. getting tired of that. Doug
  2. ATGATT w full face or modular helmet. Period. I simply do not understand any excuse not to. furthermore, I believe everyone should be actively practicing the things you learn in advanced rider courses (& taking the courses regularly). I just finished going through Hough's 2 proficient motorcycling books again. in 1990, I was the pedestrian in an auto-pedestrian accident - broke both legs in multiple places. from that, I've had extremely intense pain until I got my new knee 6 years ago (16 years worth of pain). In my view, if you're not doing what I mentioned above, you're asking real loud to go through something similar to what I've gone through from my accident. NO ONE is immortal or superman, but we CAN have a say in how bad it can be if we work at it. rebellious, shmellious...it's just another stupid excuse that yells that you obviously haven't ever had anything bad happen to you, or you're just plain stupid. That's my opinion & I'm sticking with it. I'm sure some people with not like me for saying it. too bad for you, sticks and stones... Doug
  3. I got off at 8am Saturday, rode to Heber, through Wolfe Creek Pass, got to Vernal in the middle of the day and met up with Kim Christiansen & one of his friends. a big storm chased me from Dushene, and caught up in Vernal. We headed up to Flaming Gorge through the tail end of the storm, going West around the gorge. Man is it nice up there! We hit some more rain on the way back to Vernal. A couple of times during the ride, and after refueling after we got back to Vernal, I was hearing some bearing noise. It is the clutch bearing that's starting to make noise. I was going to ride back home (3 hrs straight here) yesterday and cut my trip short, but Kim offered to drive my bike & I back on his pickup truck, so that's what we did. bummer. Saturday's ride was fantastic. Doug
  4. I'll be riding Western Colorado a bit over Labor Day Weekend! I'll leave Orem, Ut. Saturday morning, Provo Canyon to Heber, East through Wolfe Creek Pass and on to Vernal Utah where I'll meet up with a new friend & his wife, and we'll ride all the way around Flaming Gorge. I'll stay with them that night. Sunday morning I'll ride Dinosaur National Monument, Co., and then to Rangely, Co., where my uncle lives. I'll go to church with them, spend the rest of the day with them, and spend that night with them. Monday I'll ride South on 139 Lost Highway, Douglas Pass, & down to (through) Colorado National Monument (Past Fruita), through Grand Junction, SouthEast & then South on 65 through Mesa & to Cedaredge, U-turn back to I-70 East, North at Rifle up 13, & West on 64 near Meeker back to Rangely for the night. Tuesday I'll head back West through Vernal and go SouthWest at Duchesne through Indian Canyon to Helper, North West on Highway 6 through Soldiers Summit and on back home through Spanish Fork Canyon. I figure a little over 1100 ride miles. If anyone out there is interested in meeting up or riding part of the ride with me, email me at dougnrdn@gmail.com. Doug Nordin
  5. Congratulations! My 3rd son finished his Eagle last year. My 2 older brothers & I all received ours the same night in '78. I've got transformers & ratfink on my bike, maybe time to add a small proud father of an eagle sticker too. Doug
  6. Inquiring minds want to know?! I have a 1/32 scale Ninco digital slot car layout with 82.5 feet of twisties & straights that I just got back up running after a 2.5 year busy break from it. Tomorrow I'll be tuning up my 70 chipped cars so they will run good again after sitting for 2.5 years. It will run up to 8 cars at a time on a 2 lane track with lane changers you can actuate for your car from your controller. Very cool racing action! My layout has a lot of little "scenes" with exotic cars, vintage motorcycles, a gnarly biker gang, a winners circle, etc... I guess I'm really into cars since I also have a 1/43 (mostly), 1/24, & 1/18 scales metal die-cast car, bus, truck, 4WD, motorcycle...collection with 350+ vehicles. I've been trying to break into the model railroading scene. About 3 years ago I bought most everything I need to make an HO layout with enough engines & rolling stock for about 8 complete trains. At this point I'm seriously considering trying to turn my HO stuff into N scale stuff & doing an N scale layout (room/size constraints in my house). Anyways, these are some of my hobbies. Is anyone else out there into any of this stuff too? Doug Nordin
  7. It's a pattern I see as I occasionally need a part (especially 1st Gen fairing parts). Last year I had some extra fairing parts (so I thought) and sold them to someone here for a reasonable price. They were happy & I was happy. I regret to say that it is not only eBay where the raping occurs. A couple of sellers on this site consistently have quoted me arm & leg prices plus WAY expensive shipping. I'm pissed off enough that in "retaliation " I'm going to make a list of some of my spare 1st Gen parts and offer them here for the cost of shipping to hopefully foster more gratitude/pay it forward attitude here (greed just plain sucks). & I'm going to fabricate from scratch the parts I currently need to say "bite me" to the selling world at large. On a positive note; Doc is the MAN! He helped me out tremendously when I was rebuilding my frankenbike 1.5 years ago. & I do appreciate those that have been fair & treated me well in selling their parts. Doug
  8. I can't say how sick I am of some people out there that think their motorcycle parts are made of gold and that they have to make a ton of money on shipping on top of that!!! I've sold a lot of car and motorcycle parts in my day, and I know there is work involved, but come on! I refuse to be raped. I'm going to have to start fabricating some parts from scratch I guess if I refuse to play some people's games. very pissed off, DougN
  9. I added an HID to my '83 Frankenbike w/'86 engine & Vboost, and I modded the wiring harness/jumper, and I add manual switches this past year when I rebuilt my bike. I also added 2, 5+" headlights with HID on custom mounts that I made that go where the horn used to be. I absolutely love it! I call the extra headlights my "landing lights" - one friend said my bike looks like an apache helicopter when I ride behind him. I have an on/off switch for the main headlight HID, and an on/off/low only switch for the landing lights which I usually just have them on & lo/hi with the main headlight. Doug
  10. Thanks for the heads up! Doug
  11. I'm kinda bummed. The biggest thing is that my gas tank started a slight rust last year when I did my 83/86 Frankenbike. I've been dealing with it all season. The rust dust in the fuel will accumulate in my carb bowls until there's enough to foul my carbs and they start running like crap. I'm sick of blowing & draining my carbs regularly. After I clean them out, my Venture runs like a raped ape! I did put a couple of filters in line just before the carbs, and that lasted quite a while. Ultimately I'm sure I'll need to pull the gas tank (UUuugh!!) and clean it out/coat it. I bought a fuel filter that will filter down to 10 microns and I'll probably be installing that today so I can ride for another month or two despite the cold temps. I did some research on the web, and I think the rust dust varies between 5 and 200 microns. We'll see how that goes. My Vboost is totally awesome! The weather is all gray. It's supposed to snow this weekend. Down at the local Honda Powerhouse, there is a '98 Valkerie with 50K miles for 5 grand. I wish I had the money...I've always loved the Valkeries... Doug
  12. I'm 49. I had my left knee replaced 6 years ago. Recovery / pt was very painful, but I ended up with better range of motion an NO Pain!!! I had 13 years of bone on bone where my physical ability declined to where I could hardly do anything. Riding is fine. I'm limited as to how long I can ride. Now I just have my bipolar & depression to deal with. I say do it as soon as you can. Doug
  13. My original '83 had 46K, the '83 parts bike had 63K, and the '86 engine had over 200K according to the previous owner... since it is now a frankenbike with parts from all 3...Not sure how to figure that one out! It sure runs GREAT with that V-boost in it!! Doug
  14. Thanks so much for your replies! My left inner (upper) on my 83 has a blemish I've been dealing with. It's working OK right now, but it will need to be replaced and I have a line on an 86 upper.
  15. The '86 upper fork tube is the same part as the '83 upper fork tube, right? Thanks, Doug
  16. Is Alan set up for a helmet, gloves, etc? Depending on his hand & head size, I have a couple of extra helmets and several pairs of extra gloves. Doug
  17. When will you be arriving at Dave's to pick up Alan's ride? Looking forward to meeting & riding with you guys. Doug
  18. I have over 3,000 miles on my bike this season now and I'm starting to feel pretty comfortable riding in most situations:). I've signed up paid for the advanced riders course at Timp Harley in Lindon/Orem at the end of the month. Here's what I've done to the bike since it's been "done" this season; 1 - ordered a black sheepskin seat cover and used memory foam & a Wallyworld gel (not solid) seat pad to get me up higher & provide more cush for my tush. sitting too low was making it very painful for my legs while riding - leftovers from both of my legs being broken in 1990. 2 - chopped my windshield so I can see (over it) in moisture conditions. Got it a little too low, so I added a laminar lip (http://www.laminarlip.com/venture.php) which fixed that. 3 - Replaced my left side engine covers gaskets so I could get to where my stator wires exit the engine - I had an oil leak there. changed the oil/filter too. So far it hasn't leaked oil any more. 4 - My left rear (#1) carburetor kept on dumping fuel out of the overflow. I messed with it for a while draining the bowl, blowing compressed air back through the drain, which would fix it for a day or so at a time. I finally removed the right & lower fairings so I could remove the carburetor rack. Then I pulled the bowl cover, cleaned out some crud in the bowl and carb fuel coupler, and replaced the needle with a one from a spare carb. It looks like the needle that was in it was worn at the bottom. Hasn't had the problem since and it's running great now. Oh yeah, I also balanced the carbs after getting the bike back together. When I did this, I realized that I had put my Vboost lever where the choke lever usually goes by the left hand grip, so I had been turning on my Vboost to start the bike sometimes instead of the choke! lol - silly me! I forgot about that in the year that I was healing from the accident. Now I know where my choke lever really is too! (it's even labeled correctly) 5 - Tore my forks apart AGAIN so I could replace my fork seals. Apparently my right fork had a small ding & a couple of scratches that ruined that seal. I noticed my front tire wearing strange about 3 weeks ago, and this led to learning that my fork seal leaking was causing the odd wear. 6 - at the same time as the fork seal thing, I replaced my worn out Shenko tires with Metzeler ME880 Marathon tires at Rocky Mt. ATV in Payson. They put Dynabeads in & use Nitrogen to fill the tires. WOW what a difference! The Shenko's (I only got 8200 miles out of them) were much better than the Dunlop D404's that were on the bike when I got it, but the Metzelers are Awesome! The bike feels like a SPORT touring bike now!! 7 - I added a couple of small rat-fink stickers, and an aluminum Autobot transformer insignia thing to the bike; it hasn't transformed yet, though. I REALLY want to know what it will transform into when it does, and how to initiate it! lol Do you think I'll look like one of Ed Roth's monsters when it does transform? wonder what that will be like... Doug
  19. Thanks for your input. Yeah, I bought one on Ebay after I decided I didn't want to cut down the stock 1200 airbox to make it fit. After I bought the vmax airbox and started looking at how I would need to relocate the battery in order for the vmax airbox to fit, I quickly moved onto working on the individual intakes instead. Yesterday I did think about re-routing some of the vent ducts, for about 5 minutes. I might re-visit it, but I don't want to give up the venting for ME lol. It seems like the angled side parts of the fake tank cover would be a good place for some holes. It wouldn't be hard to dress it up/hide them with some stick on things from the auto parts store. I'm thinking that just having it opened up some would be enough and that air would be drawn into the enclosed area - I hope it would - it would suck to end up venting the hot air out right in front of me! I have an extra fake tank cover - might be just the thing for a little experiment. Doug
  20. I have done the following mods to my '83 Venture; '86 1300 engine with 1200 carbs, Vboost (manually operated), carbs - re-jetted richer, 1/2 shim mod, new diaphragms, bowlgaskets, floats, stock exhaust innards cleaned out & replaced with straight thru glass pack inserts, individual intakes with 4 cone filters, later side covers with louvres permanently closed to keep heat off of me. The bike runs great - oodles of power over the old stock 1200 engine, intake box w/K&N, and restrictive exhaust. & I haven't even cracked open the Vboost while riding yet. I have about 2500 miles on the road since rebuilding the bike. So, it's been getting kind of warm-hot lately into the 90's. and when I get home, I feel the plastic fake "tank" cover & it's pretty hot. I think to myself after looking at things this weekend that the intake air is pretty hot from the engine heat, being trapped and all. My mind starts thinking that it might be a good thing to provide cooler air for the intake, and I'm thinking maybe venting the fake tank cover would do the trick. In dealing with my cars in the past, that was a theme it seams; cold air intake. Any thoughts? Doug
  21. ...I wish I had seen this thread sooner, Annie. I just mounted a 665 on my bike. between that & several other accessories I've bought RAM mount stuff for, I have a lot of different mounts, extensions, etc. left over that I don't need. I'm sure I have everything you would need - I would offer them for the cause and have you pay for shipping. Let me know if that would work, but it sounds like I'm too late. I live near Dave in Utah - He got a couple of parts from me that I had laying around for Allan's bike he's building. I saw Dave tonight & he said he'll be painting body parts on Saturday. You can email me at dougnrdn@gmail.com if this will help you out. Doug
  22. I was wrong - the -5 was actually -13. Doug
  23. 15 degrees at home this morning in Orem, -5 at work after my hour commute to Park City. Doug
  24. One thing you might try is to blow out the carb passages with compressed air when cleaning the carbs. I've had car carbs in the past that didn't work correctly until I did this. Doug
  25. I want camouflage, but I don't think they have any...
