  1. I'll get backto you nextweek, going out of town this morning. Thanks, Doug
  2. This is weird: I've had an add in KSL.com online classifieds local here (Utah) since last fall when I disassembled my 83 Frankenbike with lots of mods & 86 engine with hardly any interest at all. A week & a half ago, several guys have called resulting in my selling a lot of parts, particularly the performance modded parts. It's great to move some of this stuff and reclaim a little bit of garage space. Now all I need to do is move the plastic big pieces, and take the frame & misc chrome piecesto the metal recycling. I guess my 2 sets of wheels will probably go too. Feel bad to take the 2 pumpkins, but, oh well. I was very happy to sell the 86 engine for $50 so the guy can us e the tranny parts to fix his 2nd gear problem. Doug
  3. Tourmaster controllers are known crap. I went through 2 of them, and then finally bought a different controller & adapter. The jacket liner & gloves are great. not the controller. Doug
  4. Well, my kisan chargeguard has apparently died. I've had it for 2 or 3 years with no problems on my Venture before it died. I've been installing stuff for the past 2months on Saturdays on my new to me, 05 vstrom, so I've had the bike in my Honda charger. I want an ammeter and voltmeter (digital), but I haven't seen anything out there. What do you guys use to monitor current draw/voltage? Doug
  5. I just stripped down my 83/86 frankenbike to parts and will be selling over a bike's worth of parts. Doug
  6. I spent a couple of hours visiting Paul this evening. He looked like he'd been through a ringer, which he had, but he was sitting back in a chair with all kinds of tubes going into him. He's on the ICU floor. He's very tired of the tubes, and has a pretty good sore throat from the tubes that went down there for the surgery. His pain management is doing it's job, so he's working on recovering; he's done 10 laps today around the floor! He is ready & willing to work at getting better & knows that if he works hard at it, it will happen faster. It was really great that Dave was there the other morning when the surgery time was moved up several hours. Dave was able to help him get ready to go to surgery; good on you Dave! I brought him a 1/18 scale remote controller Chopper. He got a real big kick driving it around in the hallway & showing it off to the nurses (from his room). They all said it was such a "cute" little motorcycle. I think he'll do really great. I told him about all of the posts in this thread (he hasn't had a chance to visit venturerider.org yet). He was very touched and grateful. Thank you all - I am very sure your prayers are being answered. Doug
  7. yeah, I'm baffled. I may take apart the engine just for fun and pull the tranny parts anyways. All I need is time - haha, now that's a good joke! It's putting things back together that takes the real time... Doug
  8. I have a couple of '83 instrument clusters if you can't get yours working. It's not too bad swapping out the speedometer. Doug
  9. I guess that's a no: no replies. The engine (what's left of it) and the frame will be getting some rain I expect in the next few days since they've been banned from the garage.
  10. I have a great looking set of 86 engine guards off of my bike I'm parting out w/ new keryaken (sp?) Highway pegs & stirrups still attached. PM me & I can email you pictures. Doug
  11. Yesterday I tore down my '83 frankenbike with the '86 engine. I just need finish by dis-assembling the front end and pull the engine to get the solid engine mounts so I can sell them. It looks pretty interesting on the center-stand with just the triple tree down intact attached to just the main frame with engine - that's all that's left intact (I pulled everything off of the frame including sub-frames & wiring harness.) And then the engine looks funny since I pulled the performance clutch, slightly used water pump assy, aftermarket high output stator assy, like new '83 carbs (new diaphragms & floats), ingnition coils, etc., & Vboost plenum with manual linkage off the engine. I want to know if there is any interest, meaning anyone having '83-'85 2nd gear problems that would be interested in the good tranny parts out of this '86 engine. I thought I would crack the case and pull any or all tranny parts if someone wanted to buy them. Otherwise I won't waste my time and the whole engine will go to the metal salvage yard along with parts that I don't think will sell, such as the main frame, probably some chrome handle/ crash-bar parts, etc. Please PM me or email me. Thanks, Doug
  12. What I have is the bolt on butterfly manifold with a custom cable actuator that I built using a Venture choke manual activator in the normal choke position /handlebar mount for the normal manual choke . Doug
  13. Thanks Gary, I also have a vboost, gone through 1200 carbs w/ new diaphragms & floats, & custom stack intakes w/ individual filters. Doug
  14. I'm parting out my 83. I have one of condor's braces that is for sale. Email me at dougnrdn at gmail.com Doug
  15. Last evening I couldn't get the bikes out of my brain, and I started thinking about getting the engine AND a KLR650. Only, the ones I looked at were about $4grand. So then I looked and found a 2000 & a 2002 KLR for a little over $2000. Today I rode the 2000; 4Kmiles on a nice engine rebuild. My wrists & hands hurt all afternoon from the freeway vibration. In the meantime, I made an offer on the Vstrom, and the owner (on consignment) called me & was OK with it because they took it off of consignment from me & he talked about selling it directly to me. I called my wife & we talked for quite a while. Surprised the heck out of me when she finally relented and agreed to let me do the deal for $3800. Of course I made some commitments on the other side of the deal to make it happen. I'm going to part out my venture. WooHoo! no more rebuilding Ventures for me!(crazed look in my eyes as I laugh my "evil laugh") Doug
  16. I checked out an awesome 05 tricked out vstrom today I can get for 5000, only, it's going to be 5k too much for my wife. I'm not even going to broach the subject. I also checked out a 93 VR that turned out to be a piece of crap. Makes mine seem like a total dream. So I just went onto ebay and did the Buy it now for a 90 venture 1300 engine in Denver for $1000 shipped. I guess I'll stay a Venture rider and do the big engine swap after all. I need to go to the credit union and finalize a loan tomorrow. This will be my cheapest option. Doug
  17. The new dual sports are definitely out. Aside from my wife's veto on the debt, I checked into insurance : it wipes out all gas mileage savings. I. Rode 2 klr650's yesterday. It was fun. Today I'm checking out an 05 vstrom and a 93 venture royal. The credit union approved me for a signature loan that would be enough. My wife still doesn't want the debt, even for a used bike. Still working on that. I may need to be in the doghouse. Doug
  18. It looks like the klm650 gets between 45 & 55 MPG. MPG is one big thing I want to improve substantially, & the vstrom is supposed to get 65ish MPG. It helps justify the debt side of the equation. I'm not totally sold on the comfort part of my venture. It's pretty good, but I've done a lot of things to mine, and my butt and damaged legs still complain loudly. My wife doesn't ride with me: arthritis. Doug
  19. just looked into the KLR650 some. Looks interesting. Being a thumper, wouldn't I experience quite a bit of vibration on my daily commute? Doug
  20. "...off pavement..." The over 50% payment savings comes from commuting 60ish miles/day for work
  21. It's killing me to think about doing another engine swap into my 83/86 Venture Frankenbike. And I'm very ticked off to not be riding the rest of the season. I still may try to get another 86-93ish engine, or another 86-93ish Venture, ride it for a couple more months, and do an engine and plastic swap. But it's stressing the crap out of me. I've read a LOT of adventure rider riding reports the past 2.5 years, and it really intrigues me to be able to go odd pavement on a lighter bike. I've looked at a new Honda NC700 and a Suzuki 650 Vstrom and I'm approved for either one. My wife isn't on the wagon. I'm more interested in the Vstrom. I may try to look at used Vstroms depending on if I can get financing. I'm very interested in the high gas mileage (65mpg); that would pay for over 50% of the payment (new one), increasing my monthly $ commitments about $100/month, and I wouldn't have to touch it mechanically for a lot of years other than normal maintenance. Tomorrow I'm going to go to the credit union and see what Kind of financing I can get for different options. If I do go the adventure rider bike route I will just part out all of my Venture stuff. Sucks that I barely spent almost $200 for a new rear tire. I'm just getting VERY sick of life's curve balls. Doug
  22. I spoke with Paul DeGrey today. He pointed out that if there were no oil pressure, the dash would have shown it. So there must have been oil flowing. However, after seeing the gear condition, there's no way I would risk it totally failing while riding. I was told that the engine had about 200k miles on it a couple of years ago when I put it into the bike. I don't have any interest in cracking the case of one of these engines ; the prospect of swapping engines again is bad enough. If I hadn't done all of the things I've done to this bike, I think I would just try to move on to another bike. Right now all of that is moot, since I don't have any money. In the end, I'll most likely try to find another 86-92 engine with low miles, figure out some way to buy it, and swap engines. Doug
  23. the 86 engine didn't quit running. Last weekend I headed out for a 4 day trip to Western Colorado. Saturday, I rode out to Vernal, Utah, met up with a couple of people, and we rode around Flaming Gorge. 400 mile day for me. on a couple of the switchbacks on the way back to vernal, I had some funky noise after downshifting. I suspect that was the plastic gear being stripped. I was getting what sounded and acted like the clutch bearing complaining after the ride. We transported my bike back home on Sunday in my friend's truck, and I commuted 150 miles to and from work Wed thru Fri since my bike is my main transportation mode. so, your 86 engine is all apart? Doug
  24. This morning I was in the middle of replacing my clutch bearing on my 86 engine in my 83 Venture. I took the entire clutch basket out, which is a very good thing. On the very back of the clutch basket there is a gear, it drives a plastic gear on a keyed shaft going through the case. a screw had broken that holds the retaining piece for the shaft, so it was floating. On the other side of the case, where there is a gear on the other end of the shaft, that gear meshes with a plastic gear that drives the oil pump. that plastic gear was stripped. So my engines been running without oil supply probably for 150 miles this week. crap, crap, crap. I need an engine, a different bike, a new bike, ...no money. crap, crap, crap. Doug
