I do have a battery connection to use, so that's not an issue - thanks for the consideration. Doug

I bought a small 12volt compressor to carry on my '83 Venture on Ebay for $30 + $10 shipping without checking out pricing elsewhere first. A couple of days ago I saw the same compressor at Pep Boys for $12 + local sales tax (6+%). Boy, was that DUMB! Even though it was my own fault, I emailed the guy - didn't blame him, just said I was frustrated that I was dumb to overpay so much. He emailed me back & said he was sorry, he didn't know what they sell for & that he ended up with a box of them from the flea market - I don't think he's American based on his illiterate email. I emailed him back asking that he refund me $15 - I don't expect a positive response/any money back. Man, I'm gonna hafta do more homework! Doug

They do use ethanol here - I thought it was in the winter only, though. I may be wrong. Chevron's (& Texaco - the same any more) have always advertised to the max about Tekron. One mechanic buddy thinks Maverick gas is junk, which is kind of funny if they all get their gas from the same refineries. I talked to my wife since I posted earlier - she says that last year the mileage in her '96 Town&Country van went down a lot more than mine did with Maverick gas compared to Chevron gas. It stayed down until I used Seafoam and she stopped going to Maverick. Several years ago, My dad said that as long as he used Chevron gas, his performance/sports car worked great, but it was very fickle with cheap gas and would start to have problems with his injectors. Maybe I'll stop going to Maverick - I wish Chevron would get their act together with their credit card system - there have been times this past year when several Chevron & Texaco stations in the area couldn't pump gas because the system was down. Has anyone else had a similar experience with different gas station chains & gas? Doug Doug

I want to know what you guys think... So, I drive 500 miles/week with my work commute. Unfortunately, I'm still driving my cage while I re-build my '83 from my accident of a couple of months ago. Bummer - working on it every Saturday for 12+ hours each time. Anywho, For the past 4 months commuting in my cage, I've bought gas at one chevron station, and I try to get it at the same pump, and fill it the same way each time. I have consistently gotten 32mpg in my little Subaru Justy. Very consistent - rebuilt my Justy this past winter so everything is new. Last week, something was screwey with their credit card system - I pay at the pump at 4 to 5 in the morning - and I swiped my card 3 times, pre-approving 3 separate, $75 gas purchases (I didn't know it pre-approved for this much each time), but the pump said to see the cashier - too early, they weren't open. So, my wife calls me mid-morning at work freaking out because the Visa credit card fraud people are calling wanting personal info to verify that she is who she says she is so they can verify charges. She hangs up on them because she won't give personal info out over the phone & thinks maybe I'm spending money I don't have like crazy. So, I had gone to Maverick to get gas that morning after failing to get gas at Chevron, & since then - 3 times total. My gas mileage is 30 mpg EACH TIME at maverick all of a sudden. I just did some figuring & comparing of 5 Chevron fill-ups at about $2.94 ish/gallon, and the 3 Maverick fill-ups at $2.89ish/gallon. I've payed the same per fill-up per number of miles driven at both Maverick & Chevron (Wow, how did that happen? the Maverick gas is less per gallon!), but the Maverick fill-ups consistently say I filled up with more gas per miles driven than the Chevron fill-ups! This doesn't add up! nothing has changed except for where I'm getting gas, & I think that Maverick must be doing something fishy with their pumps. Doug

exhaust options
Dmnordin replied to fisheyes's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Thanks, Dingy - How about the backpressure that's left - how does the bike ride/feel? Did it open up the exhaust enough to gain you some descent power? Did you lose any low end, have to re-jet? How does it sound on the freeway - to you and to others driving around you? Is it loud enough that neighbors would be ticked off if you consistently left home between 4 & 5 AM? Do you think it would a be comparable change to MAC or other slip-ons? I'm having a hard time justifying the funds for aftermarket pipes - if I do get some, my wife will kill me. It's easier to come up with time than the money. Thanks, Doug -

Dingy, How did you cut out the parts - what tools did you use? Thanks, Doug -
Thanks for PMing me those that did - it worked fine with all y'all. I suspect the problem was most likely with my computer somehow - taking a while to type the PM or something. I got the other member's email address & we'll proceed that way. Thanks! Doug

I've been trying to talk with another member via PM's, and the past couple of day's PM's have disappeared - getting frustrated wasting time typing messages and having them disappear. Doug Nordin

I've got a wierd question
Dmnordin replied to Dragonslayer's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
You mean these have a front fork lock on the ignition? What years? Do you push in the key or something? Never noticed it on my '83. Doug -
Also, how about the front engine guards & mounting hardware, with chin scoop mounting hardware? Doug

I don't mind doing a little custom fixing. How much do you want for them, and can you ship them to me @ 84058? Thanks, Doug

I called "the Advocates" the other day & talked with a Lawyer to get a feel for that route. Apparently he wouldn't make much money from my case; he advised me to follow the course with Farmers and see what happens with the lost wages when my medical portion is closed out, and if things look like they aren't going too good at that point, to call him back. I think this accident thing must be like an traumatic experience in life - you go through different phases/stages. Last week I was very discouraged, depressed and ticked off. This week was much better (even though I got less for the broken blackberry than I would have liked). Thursday morning, on my way to work, I stopped to get gas (in my Subaru Justy) and decided to check my bald tires that I haven't been able to replace for the lack of funds - steel cords worn through on my front left tire. I decided it was too dangerous to drive to Park City on it, so I borrowed some money from my son & wife, went to Big-O in and had Steve (the manager & long time buddy) put on four 175/70R13's for $180 - the Farmers check was in the mail & would have to cover it. Yesterday, my "build my '83 Venture day/increment of plugging away at it", was pretty productive despite the heat - Thank heavens for a garage & a fan! I finished pulling the engine out of my original '83 (which went better than the other two engine pulls since I removed the thermostat housing & starter first this time), and I also dis-assembled & pulled my front forks. The forks on my '83 chassis bike I bought are junk - the chrome is pitted & would eat up my new fork seals in no time, so I'm going to have my bent fork tubes straightened. I'm thinking about taking a day or two of vacation so I can make it go that much quicker. One silver lining to re-building pretty much everything on my bike & taking it down to the frame is that I will know my bike very intimately. Doug

I've decided that the insurance game just plain stinks. When I was talking with the adjuster from Progressive, he sounded very happy to replace my helmet, blah, blah, blah ... when the rubber hit the road, the "accessory coverage" that was supposed to cover that, and my blackberry that was damaged, was part of the $2000 "agreed value" of my bike, and I got $2000 agreed value - $100, - $300 salvage bike value = a $1600 check (which wouldn't replace the bike, thus I have to build a bike from 3 parts bikes if I want to keep riding). So, all of there happy, happy talk at first about taking care of me was a bunch of,"well, coverage & limitations are only...blah, blah, blah" ... Now that the girl's senior insurance claims rep lady decided that the girl is 100% at fault, - they will pay the lowest internet cost for replacing my helmet because it's safety equipment, but my blackberry will only be paid out on it's current, used value. Did I ask this girl to u-turn in front of me & break my Blackberry? I want it replaced, but that's not what will happen because of the same bunch of, "well, coverage & limitations are only...blah, blah, blah"... I can't wait till we start talking about lost work because of my wrist being injured.... Very disappointed & ticked off, Doug

Thanks, Dave! I forgot to mention that my insurance agent told me that my rates shouldn't be affected since Progressive will be reimbursed. A note to everyone; I encourage you to check your motorcycle policies to see if you have any PIP/Medical coverage, and if you do, how much do you have. I learned that it is not required for motorcycle insurance coverage to include PIP/Medical coverage, and that many times it is not even mentioned when buying bike insurance! Heck, some companies don't even have it available as part of their bike insurance policies! My policy only has $1000 coverage! That's totally pitiful! I have increased it to $25,000 (the max available with my policy), and it'll cost me a mere $125 extra per year. That still isn't enough in my opinion; In 1990, both of my legs were broken when a girl drove into my Blazer door, closing it on my legs since I was about to climb into the Chevy. Life has been hell since that incident - 5 years ago I received a new knee, so life is much improved since then. Anyways, my medical expenses were $98,000, and that was in 1990. I got an insurance settlement between both auto insurance policies of $110,000. I couldn't work for several years, and after I could work, it was very limited how much I could work. It is interesting to note that the type of Femur breaks I had are usually acquired in motorcycle accidents. I've been wanting to post this for a couple of weeks about all y'all checking your policies. Doug Nordin

I installed a Wing windshield vent on my '83 Venture windshield. I came across a template somewhere for the cut, I think - can't remember for sure, as it was last year - maybe it came with the vent kit (that would be why I had to modify the hole maybe). Anyways, it took a while of fitting/trimming the hole to the vent after re-installing the windshield, and the the vent front & back parts wouldn't close together onto the windshield correctly because the Venture windshield curve was tighter than the wing windshield curve. I ended up using a stainless steel washer or two (don't remember how many) with a longer stainless steel screw so the parts wouldn't close together so much, and then it worked (either the top or bottom of the vent stays together via a groove & edge on the respective front & rear vent parts). There was a gap between the bottom of the vent & the windshield, so I masked the windshield & vent, and filled it with clear silicone to seal it - it was pretty slick after it cured. I hope my quick explanation is clear (as mud?) Like any custom job, it was a little bit of a project, but it turned out real nice (I took my time with it). email me & I can email you pictures of the vent in the windshield if you like. Doug

I just heard from the girl's insurance company that they are accepting 100% fault for the accident!! I'm going to pursue getting reimbursed for my helmet damage, Blackberry cell phone damage, and lost massage work money due to my wrist & arm injuries (It will be a couple of months worth of several hours per week of work - can't pay all of my bills without it). I went to the orthopedic guy for a follow up appt this morning. No broken bones. He said it would take 6+ weeks for the tendon attachment partial separation on my elbow to heal up, and about the same for the stretched ligaments at the base of my thumb and in my wrist. WooHoo! No Cast for 6 weeks. Now all I need to do is tear down these 3 parts bikes & put the good one together! And then hit the road! Actually, it will probably take me a few Saturdays to do the mechanical work. I did work on pre-pulling the 1300 engine tasks for about 3 hours on Saturday, and my wrist was pretty sore after that. a couple of weeks ago when I had my T-bone fender-bender into the errant U-turner, I tried to pick up my '83 like that and I couldn't pull it off - my legs are screwed up from an auto-pedestrian accident in 1990 (I was the pedestrian), a girl drove into my '86 blazer door, closing on my legs - broke both femurs, among other things, and I lost several muscles that were crushed. I have to rely on at least a couple of other strong guys helping me out. Doug
